Speed to browse folder why different? - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 ROM Development

Gentlements...
Why does the different ROM (PDA, Gullum, etc.) has the different speed to browse the folder (Windows/ SD Card and etc.) in file manager ?
Some ROM is very fast (3 sec.) but some is very Slow (> 5 sec.???)
So, How I can increase this speed? Can we mod the Windows registry, for increasing the speed?

The system caches the file list when you first open the directory. You'll notice the Windows directory is fairly slow to open because there's a lot of file names to load.
Opening folders with large numbers of files on the SD card is even slower as the interface to SD memory is slower than that of the main system.
One thing to consider... if you have a speed sensitive program, install to main memory and it will launch more quickly.

If you're using an app like GSFinder, you can also tell it not to load icons, which significantly speeds up browsing \Windows\ folders etc

[Q] Very large File 400+MB Showing In Windows Directory

Hi all,
I use TreeSize Mobile, a great little app, to monitor where my internal memory is being used. I've noticed there is quite a large file sitting in the Windows Directory called simply ''files''. What I want to know is are these files temp files that I can get rid of or does the system need these files?
My hunch is that they are system files but I just wanted to be sure.
I've attached a couple of pics showing this file. Pic2 is a selection of files within the main file.
i suspect that means there are files totalling 407 meg in teh windows folder, not one file of 407 meg, , followed by the sub folders and their size.
Open up the storage card tree (click the +) and see if that starts with 'Files xxxMB'

Open up the storage card tree (click the +) and see if that starts with 'Files xxxMB'
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
Thx for the reply.
You mention opening the storage card tree, the file i'm refering to is not on the storage card, it is in the windows directory. So i'm puzzled as to your answer.
because i think if you open the storage card (or indeed any other folder) you would see
storage card
[20mb] files
[150mb] DCIM
[2gb] music
[100mb] program files
the values and names are an example, the point i am making is that the top entry is showing you the total size of the files in the opened folder. so in your image it is telling you there are 400megabytes worth of files in the windows folder, not one file 400megabytes big.

[Q] [10.1v]Memory full notification - Applications 7.52 GB

Hi,
Got a notification that I only got 8.5 Mb left on my memory!!
That seemed a bit weird to me cause I hadn't many movies on my tab.
And I have only added a few apps.
I checked out Storage under Settings.
Media 5.32 GB (I deleted a movie)
Applications 7.52 GB
That can't be right!!
When I click Applications and select All a list appears with the Applications.
Now way that all adds up to 7.52 GB!
I checked the browser cache but that was not the cause.
Any ideas what's causing this and how can I get rid off this crazy number.
It can't be right.
TIA
*****
10.1v still on 3.0.1
since the application limits in size has been altered it is possible that your tab has that ammount of applications.
A good example would ben asphalt 6 or something, they most of the time require alternate downloads that can add up to 600 mb per application.
Could you post a list with your current installed applications?
It lists from top the bottom decreasing sizes.
At the top I have Google Earth 104 Mb
Maps 103 Mb
Aldiko Reader 17.13 Mb
Adobe Flash Player 10.3 11.96 Mb
MoboPlayer 8.77 Mb
Music 7.45 Mb
Gallery 7.20 Mb
Find Differences (Game) 6.88 Mb
MoboPlayer Codec 6.78 Mb
QuickOffice 6.30 Mb
After that only apps with sizes under 5 Mb (About 60 of them from 5 MB to 0 MB)
No way that adds up to 7.65 GB
Memory = RAM
Storage = Flash
Looks like you ran out of RAM, not storage.
try clearing cache of high resource seeking apps like google earth,market, google maps, browser etc. Try applications>all>and check the cache size for each (hectic but worth a try)
I recreated the notification by adding a couple of movies to my tab.
It said "Low on Space"
Text by clicking said "Tablet Storage Space is getting low"
Settings/Storage
Internal Storage
Total 14.12 GB
Media 6.58 GB
Applications 7.52 GB !!!!!!!!
Available 22.27 MB
Applications Top 5
Maps 108 MB
Earth 104 MB
Aldiko Reader 17.13 MB
Adobe Flashplayer 10.3 11.96 MB
Gallery 10.77 MB
After that the size goes rapidly from under 10 MB to under 1 MB.
I checked cache of all applications listed but found nothing disturbing, rather small sizes actually.
Browser cache was 25 MB for instance.
So I really don't know where that 7.52Gb is coming from.
I had only 22.27 MB left and tried to copy another movie to see if it would overrule "the limit" but it didn't, it said I couldn't add more because of the low space.
So this is really a problem if applications take up more than half of the flashmemory.
The only thing I can probably do is to restore the tab to factory settings.
I'll be waiting until the 3.1 update arrives, if it arrives.
Suggestions are welcome though.
TIA
try backing-up from rom manager, and format the internal memory!there seems to be a bad file cluster in there!
really. I've had exactly the same problem with you! I tried restarting the device, and it recovers around 400mb instantly! lol
Oooooooooh,
By restarting you mean to turn it off and on again.
Mine doesn't do that, it remains at 7.52GB
*****
By rom manager you mean the clockworkmod from the market.
I have checked out the free version but I understand your tab has to be rooted.
Mine isn't.
It also said when Samsung you have to download something from xda-forum!
I like to know more about it, I am really not up to date in that field.
Copy the folders on sd card you reckon important as backup on your pc or any container manually, format the sdcard.
OR
The rooting process involves saving the ***.zip file(with the root tools) into sd card, booting into recovery, applying update.zip from sd card and reboot thus you are good to go. For the zip file and details
http://droidbasement.com/db-blog/?p=2054
INSTRUCTIONS
Go into command window> typing cmd in START>RUN
Direct to the drive and address containing the adb.exe file, eg
C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools\
adb push su_busybox_misc-sam_tab_10.1-061611.zip /sdcard/ (you can manually push the zip file into root of sdcard from windows XP etc hence this command not required)
adb reboot recovery ( this perhaps works on 3.0 versions but not 3.1)
volume down to apply update from /sdcard
select .zip
hit power to select
scroll down to apply, and apply.
after flash, reboot
I think I found a way to help you.
Go to settings -> storage -> click at Applications
See all the items in there, and see which one has the biggest memory of all.
There aren't any with huge filesizes, see post 3 and 6.
@mughalgxt
Thanks for sharing but that sounds very complicated for a newbie like me .
I'll think I will wait for a while until I try this.
I have contacted Samsung support, let's see what they can tell me.
Well, I suggested you to ,make a folder in your pc drive, copy files from tab' sd card which seem important, mainly those of your movies,music,pics and installed applications than format the sdcard mounted on pc! There seem to be some bad file clusters on the sd card.

[Q] explanation of directory structure of a NT

using ES Explorer, I see the following:
1 - /phone icon - when opened contains about 15 folders starting with acct and ending with vendor, with another dozen or so individual (look like system) files
2 - /mnt/media -contains folders labeled Android, B&N Downloads, LOST.DIR, My Files) and a file called System.apk
3 - Two other folders labeled Downloads and Pictures (both presently empty)
Questions:
Is it correct that the /mnt/media is the 1GB space where my stuff is supposed to go? If so, why is there a B&N Downloads folder in there?
Is the /phone icon directory the 12 GB of space that was supposed to be just for B&N content? Can I use it to put my stuff now? I tried adding a few new folders with stuff but later found them gone??
I would appreciate anyone who can lay out in simple, straightforward language the who, what and where of the new space allocation/availability since rooting the NT. Is there any app that can show me the space by partition?

[Q] Missing Storage space GS2

Good day Guys
Seems i have a issue which many of us Android users have/experience but, atm, i have been searching and found some solutions but still have this monster of curiosity in my head regarding lost space for internal storage.
My phone is rooted and have custom ROM installed
I have tried the following:
* Delete the LOST.DIR folder
* Move Most big apps to SD
* Deleted unwanted/un-useful Apps
Besides from the Apps/Picts, Music & Vids/ and other downloads
These are the Zip files i have in my internal SD:
* 1 Nandroid backup about 1.3G
* 2 customs ROM zip files that would not reach 1gb of file size
* 3 Files for Kernel, not more than 30mb
* Gapps and fixes, not more than 20mb
as you can see i posted 2 screenshots of my settings>storage and i have no problems with my External SD
I am still bugged about the "available 1.03GB" space left but as you can see the Color Coded categories, i still have that One big fat Gray area that i am not convinced to be JUST 1.03gb of free space
I don't know if i have some virus/malware that eats up my storage.
Your advices are very much appreciated
Thanks in Advance:angel:
It is possible that you have files that do not fall under any of the four categories shown there. Some roms have "Miscellaneous" category, which seems to be missing on your screen shot, and downloaded contents of some games could fall under this category (even if you delete the game, the downloaded contents can stay in your phone).
I am not sure if you tried this already, but use ES File Explorer (so that you can see every single folders and files, even the hidden ones), select all folders and files in the internal storage, and check the total size. If it is ~ 10GB, then you know that the screen shot is telling the truth (in terms of the available space). Just track down the unnecessary files and delete them.

Thanks for the reply, i've done that using ES file explorer (including the hidden folders) and total size is 8.55gb

Script to Increase Cache for Superb SD Card access (Android)

Read/write speed of the SD Card in Android Phones.Can Be Up Amazingly Fast By Done This ...
Note : Root Needed To Change/Modefiy System Files
After Done this You ll Got This Profits.
1. Image Loads Faster in Gallery
2. Copy/Cut speed Faster
3. Apps Loads Faster in Ram And Open Fast
4. Using Any File Explorer .. All Files Loads Faster in Sd Card
5. Overall SD Performence will Up
Sometimes it Gives 100mb+ Read and 30mb+ Writing Speed For SD .. Depends on Device
It doesn't matter if you have fast 10 Class SD Card, it performs very poorly on the Phone comparing how it performs on the PC.
The clue is the Cache size for reading from SD Card. It's set to 128 KB, on some ROM's even to 4 KB!
You can check for yourself looking into this path.:
/sys/devices/virtual/bdi/179:0/read_ahead_kb
You can change it manually but it will be reverted to default on the reboot. The changes need to be done permanently by loading the script on the startup through the init.d.
You must find which Cache size fits best for your SD Card.
Use This 4 files made by me below. Use SD Tools - apk20.com/apk/126249/ To see ur actual R/W speed of SD
Just Only Remove Shiva and Type Dropbox.com in Link
link1--1024--> Shiva/s/mvccqwmv27tsbpz/77speedshiva1024?dl=0
link2--2048--> Shiva/s/4yfbbe7izmnrvnd/77speedshiva2048?dl=0
link3--3048--> Shiva/s/5s9sfq6vt0akuv5/77speedshiva3048?dl=0
link4--4096--> Shiva/s/0iwuadsmqw7k0h2/77speedshiva4096?dl=0
Copy it with the Root explorer or push it with ADB into /system/etc/init.d and set permissions to 777 And Reboot. And Then Chek With Sd Tools App .. Ur Sd Card W/R Speed
Voillaa ......
You Can See the difference by opening Gallery App and You Can see How the image loading Fastly
Suggestion: 2048 KB Cache size performs at best for most of the SD Cards!
Your Comments Needed If u are using This ^_^
