A suggestion for the clarity - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 ROM Development

A suggestion for the clarity:
A list at the beginning of the wm6-version. In points of pass the frequent problems (and their solution) are taken up. With twenty and more sides in few days you can fast loose the overview.

Ideally, that is what the WIKI is for. Check it out. If there are common issues/solutions that you feel should be added... add them!

This would not be the same... i mean, that the different rom-versions have their own wiki in the beginning of the thread, because the problems are also different.

Oh gotcha. Well, some 'chefs' that post their own 'cooked' ROMs keep an updated log of problems in their first post. It would be nice if everyone did, but they don't. I do think that would be the best area to keep track of the bugs for the individual ROMs though.
Good ideas.

Help! Too many flavours!

Sooooo all the respected guru's out there, please help me!
There are so many flavours to choose from!
Which ROM is the most complete, stable? I installed the Vanilla ROM. Looks nice. I miss a good messenger though..
Are there any upcoming complete ROMS?
And what about the second camera at the front of the phone? Is it usable as a webcam for a messenger?
Thanksss

Are you talking about WM6 rom stability? If so these are still BETA versions with all of us as the testers (version 02 is still only a few hours old).
I can't test these because my phone's broken, but reading the threads for both Kyphurs and Vanilla rom they appear to be mostly stable and faster, but have some known issues - most of these are listed in the first couple of posts in the release threads (or burried in the discussions).
The only way to test if they are stable for you is to load them and the relevant fixes to known issues - then report back to the rest of the forum with any new problems to help make the next release better. Have fun...
Heh.. If you want stable, wait for your carrier to present you with the ROM..
Everything on this site is "take it with a grain of salt"
Granted, I loaded XDA v0.1 and then XDA v0.2 and aside from a few items, they seem to both work very well.
As with any "testing" you may have issues, and/or brick your unit.. there is always a chance..
GL and hopefully you have fun testing out Windows Mobile 6 on your phone.
If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the [ROM] kitchen!

You could use coolcamera.........it works as a streaming USB webcam. I opened a thread on this a while back take a look?
Thanks for the replies all of you.
I have two HTC Hermes pda's. One is kind of bricked. The other one is superCID. Is there a benefit of flashing the device with the AKU 2.06 Cingular ROM, compaired to the available HTC ROM's?

If you want WM5 and are on Cingular, then use the AKU 3.3 leaked Cingular ROM.
If you want WM6 then the choices are a plenty.

Wpbear, thanks. I'm not on Cingular, I have an original HTC, but my device is superCID though.
Ofcourse I would like the latest WM6. But how stable is it? Should I try the the LVSW version?
Thanks!

Spending a 5 minutes reading the LVSW thread will give you a very good idea how stable it is. Runs fine on mine

Comparing the above statement of Wpbear with Wam7's, does not clarify things for me in 1 minute reading here.
Is it possible and wise if I wish to stay with WM5 for a while, to upgrade my superCID HTC device with the Cingular AKU 3.3 ROM, since there isn't a shipped AKU 3.3 ROM from HTC?
If I choose for WM6, do I choose the LVSW or XDA Live 0.20 edition?
And which Extended ROM suits best with either one?
Thanks.

You see, that 1 minute reading is part of the problem. Just spending a few more minutes skimming through the relevant threads will indicate whether a particular ROM is for you. If you do not have the time or inclination to try them yourselves that is the least you can do.
There is no contradiction between mine and Wpbear's statement. On one hand I read through the LSVW Rom thread and quickly came to the conclusion that I would try it and so far I have no problems... I did have a low memory problem with the XDA .20 which was easily solved with a reg fix.
Wpbear is saying all the ROMS have different quirks; what one person has a problem with somebody else will say it runs fine... quirks.
There is a tacit feeling that too many people expect easy answers and to be spoon fed without putting in a little leg work themselves.
best of both worlds!!
I installed lvsw rom, updated radio to 1.34, next i had taken an spb backup of an previously installed xda live 0.20 and restored it on top of the lvsw rom, reinstalled a couple proggies, deleted an invalid startup, and voila! The most stable rom and os i ever experienced on a ppc. All done yesterday, and not one time did i have to soft reset behind instability! how did i learn how to do this? all i did was let the forum talk, and i read!

May ask what was the "invalid start up" you deleted?
I think the best thing to do is flash ROMs to the phone and try them... eventually settling on the one you like best... why you need people to tell you what to put on your device is beyond me.

Wpbear is not saying that all ROM's have different problems, but all ROM's are the same, quircky, like all HTC ROM's.
So when you tell me "what one person has a problem with, somebody else will say it runs fine", You can not understand why things remain unclear to me? I mean, the people trying out these ROMS are all using a HTC Hermes like me. So it would be a big guess, I could have problems, or I could not.

Princeasi: thanks for your reply.
Olipro: Ok you're basicly saying when I read this forum, and things are unclear to me what ROM to use, that because this is not unclear to you or others, I should shut up and not ask questions?
no, I think you should just try the ROMs yourself; flash Hard-SPL if you're worried about buggering your phone up, and then start plopping ROMs onto your device.
Reading the respective threads of the ROMs you try is generally a good idea since what's contained in them is listed in a far greater detail than anybody will go to the effort of writing here.
Might I add, that which ROM you use is a matter of personal taste, therefore there is no "right" or "wrong" ROM to use; therefore, how you can say "things are unclear to me what ROM to use" makes no sense.
at best you're too lazy to trawl the threads to look up the information yourself; as I said earlier, the respective ROM threads will tell you far more substantial information if you can make the effort to actually read through it... failing that, flash it to your phone.

Asking which ROM to use does make sense, since I asked in my first post: Which is most COMPLETE and STABLE. I then mean, compared to original ones. You get it? In the first post I'm not asking about my PERSONAL ROM taste, but the most COMPLETE and STABLE. Since I'm not lazy, and read all the threads, I did not become wiser about which is the most stable one. Besides this, even Wpbear is saying: "what one person has a problem with, somebody else will say it runs fine". You might concider it to be a possibility that for one person reading all the threads makes him less wiser then some other person reading the threads. This doesn't right away mean he's lazy, does it?
All the threads are about ROM's for someone running fine and some other running awful. So no, I do not think my question is stupid, or out of lazyness.
well... I'm afraid to say that "COMPLETE and STABLE" is something that is rather subjective since unless a ROM is totally broken, it's generally not that easy to work out how much more "COMPLETE" or how much more "STABLE" it is.
also, in terms of how "COMPLETE" it is, you can easily work that out by checking what's bundled into the app.
so really, I fall back to my original point that you should try the ROMs for yourself.

to xda and its memebers in rom development

is it me or is it very annoying to see all these post about roms that are not released yet or wont be released for a week or two or three .....i mean at least a screen shot ...or how about people using kitchen to cook a personal rom that taste like sh*t....is there any way to control this or rules to posting a new rom ......hope i dont sound stupid
also i would like to say i respect ever one for there work personal or public ......
I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with throwing out a teaser. It's like the 'Coming Attractions' at the movies. If you don't like them, just show up 15 minutes after the movie's supposed to start.
Unless every chef uses a diffrent theme each time, every screenshot is going to look the same. I can understand if someone is planning to roll out a new taskbar or something and it may not be cooperatiing, a screenshot may be a nice placeholder for its followers... but really, a screenshot is always going to be the same picture as all the others.
I think it is helpful for the chefs that are soliciting input on what to include in pending ROMS so that they can appeal to the masses. It does seem a bit odd however, to post a "Placeholder" for something without description or any request for input. However, it seems a small price to pay for getting to use the work and talents of others.
I do make some flashing decisions based on pending releases. For example, NATF should be close to his 5.0 release so I am waiting to flash that. (I don't know why we ever let him buy a house - A real productivity killer)
I guess you always have the option of simply not reading the "In Development" posts.
Doug M.
I certainly concur in this thought process. As AdamNimrod said, unless you are providing a ridiculously new look or program or UI, OR if you are a seasoned chef who has been contributing for many many releases and have a large following.... there should be no teasers.
Most of the up and comming noob chefs out there are using Da_G's kitchen. Which means, out of the box, most Roms are looking identical. Just a couple tweaks here and there, such as the wallpaper. We arent seeing any new chefs who offer a groudbreaking earth shattering new rom.
The roms we see out there now have taken lots and lots of time, and tweaking and calibrating from the chefs, to be what they are. But when a new chef comes on the scene and states they have an awesome new rom, and it turns out to be identical to one released 4 days ago... its discouraging. However, on the flip side, even to the guy who releases a basic rom Im in debted, because I cant cook a rom to save my life. I just flash any and every rom and subsequent release, in the quest for the perfect rom!

IMO, They are the chefs let them determine how to set up the menu. I would rather see a placeholder with what they may be including on it to decide whether or not i will flash it. They could be worse, the threads would look like howardforums threads.

That's actually why I don't cook & release ROMs. The way I see it, I'm using a tool that is available to everyone that visits the site, and unless I have something ground-breaking to offer, I'll let those that do contribute in that way. I will continue to try and find other ways to contribute, and cook ROMs for my own personal use. I have had a few people PM me & tell me they'd like to try one of my ROMs, but I wonder what makes them think that my ROM is any better than anyone elses? I don't have half the technical know-how of the chefs here. The tools provided on this site make it so easy for a n00b to feel like a pro - and really, that's all I am - a Senior n00b.
But I still appreciate the work that ALL the chefs, even the new ones, put into their work, and how they do what they can to assist those who decide to flash their ROMs. I'd much rather be the guy that goes around and helps out where he can.
So at any rate, I don't think there's anything wrong with generating anticipation for a new ROM release, though I do appreciate the point that if it's not offering something new & exciting, that it could be a disappointing read. Fortunately, such threads are clearly labeled, and can be ignored.

No bro, it's not you. Those empty threads always make me think "why didn't this guy wait til he actually had something?" It is a waste of time and more importantly space on the first page of the forum. I personally always rate those threads low. I'm not recommending everyone do the same, but the option is there.
Half the time we hear a chef ask "tell me what you want" only to have tens of contradictory requests anyway. The other half of the time a chef says "This is MY personal ROM configured to MY liking. If you like it and want to use it great, if not don't bother." So I don't see the point of having a teaser. (not that I'm criticizing either style, I respect both. Just no place for teasers.) Besides, I've even seen teasers that NEVER get anywhere past that.
If you cooked your own ROM and you like it, chances are someone else will too. If you're bringing in the latest stuff from whatever device you ported it, that's exciting. If you're just announcing your intentions, well you haven't really done anything have you?

+1 completely agree with you.
Just for an example NRG is missing for the last few days however couple of days back he had posted a lot teaser pics on what he is working on. So every one knows that something big is coming next and anxiously waiting for it even though there is no release date.
I do fine a little useless to teasers without any pics and without a release date but like others said in this thread, i will just ignore it and move on and probably wont be coming back to those threads.

First things first. I have always wondered how people quoted multiple times, thanks for giving me the term to search for!
just my .02; I dont have a problem with teasers at all but it does get old when a teaser is posted and nothing comes out for weeks or even months. With all due respect to the Chefs out there that can do alot more than I; If you're that far from release, wait to post the teaser so people dont lose interest by the time it comes out.

Request: Any Interest in a "Function before Looks" 6.5.3 28008 ROM?

(If request threads are frowned upon, my apologies. Feel free to delete or move this thread.)
Are there others of you out there that would appreciate a ROM that is a phone / PDA first and lotsa colorful graphics left to a minimum?
Here's why I ask. I've recently been looking at the reviews of the new HTC PURE (AT&T.) Looking at its TF3D screens my first reaction was, "I dig the blue theme, but man those mono color sliders sure look boring! The ROMs at XDA sure have better graphics!"
That was, however - a short lived reaction. . . .
We have a stock AT&T FUZE here in the house, and as everyone knows its theme is gray, gray, and more gray - boring.
However -
When a text message or email comes in, the little bright orange notification circles that pop up on the sliders are quite noticeable and stick out like a sore thumb. Some may consider this ugly, but it IS functional.
Once the modding stops and life restarts, these are, after all phone / PDAs. And in a busy life full of varying light conditions, the boring AT&T themes seem more useful than many cooked ROMs. Their basic two toned themes make it easier and faster to interact with the phone while on the go. The alerts are not distracted by the multicolors all over the interface.
I really do not like the features, bloat, and outdated stock AT&T ROM for the FUZE. And I really appreciate the great ROMs here on XDA and prefer them.
I'm wondering if there are others like me out there and a chef willing to make a go at a simple two toned ROM with bold alerts?
Feedback?

looking on the ROM page I see many stock like or simple ROMS. Have you tried any of those? To me the idea behind cooked ROMS is to be different from the ones who use stock ROMS. I personally during a day go from my car to my office to a warehouse to my car then out to lunch at many different places then back to my office and then home as well as stores and shopping and have not had an interaction issue with a single ROM I have tried. Furthermore all ROMS put a notification icon on the task bar as well when you have mail or messages. For me functionality has never been an issue. What I would like is a more personal way to ad or remove apps I never use such as all the multimedia and messaging crap.
Try Timolol's ROMs as bare and boring as they can be but with great speed.
And this topic is not worth a new thread.
Please be careful next time you start a new thread.
yeah i would use timolols if ur interested in a bare looking and yet functional rom.
I concur with more function over looks
It would be nice to see more roms that are naked or use UC to put in the programs you want or exclude those that you may not need.
I'll take a look at Timolol's
sa-10 has a good idea with choice through UC.
One thing I like with many ROMs is the choice to run with TF3D or Titanuim baked into the same ROM. I was just wondering if there would be much popular support for an option to run with a very basic theme.
I don't dispute Solarenemy68's expereinces day to day. But for me, I have become vision impaired. I didn't want to make this thread about me or a disability, so I thought I'd see if other folks would find a simple to see, functional ROM useful.

would it not be an idea to talk to an moderator instead of saying this things that can be dually explained ?
PS: maybe not the right timing but it would be a good idea to let chefs make a bare rom and just add the stuff through UC which one can download and unpack on a sd-card ?
I don't mind a MOD judging me as I was not Wrong !
I can't stand baseless acquisitions !
And will defend myself.
And UC on SD card would be good but then the ROM of one chef would not be different from anothers which would make things repatitive.
Plus UC will take so long to install so many apps and things.
People will have different demands and many demands for custom UC.
But maybe it could be tried by upcoming chefs.
Just PM'd two MODs Captain_throwback and the-equinoxe two look into the matter.
I will agree with whatever they will say.
No offense was taken.
Many times how I express myself in text is misunderstood as text doesn't allow for tone of voice, pauses, voice inflectoin etc.
So, Im not one to cast stones on this. No harm, no foul.
That said, I didn't post this thread to attract trouble or controversy.
I simply wished to make a request where chefs and patrons could take note and chime in if they like.
Yes, this was posted selfishly seekling a ROM a bit more user friendly to my disability. But before posting I tried to phrase things inclusively with the idea others might also like such a ROM for whatever reason.
Just a request, wondering if others feel they would benefit too.
No trouble intended.

glad to hear that.
you don't need to be sorry OP.
you are at no fault
glad to see you 2 get along now all of a sudden
donno what happend but it is gifted by the gods
??
I was never against the OP !
This thread seems to be a fair request, imo.
That being said, it's always a good idea to look at the ROM threads before posting, to see which ROM meets your needs. If you don't see one, perhaps starting a thread like this gives the OP an opportunity to get people's opinions. This isn't one of those "which ROM is the best" threads, which serve no real purpose, as the answer to that question is quite subjective.
I'm glad to see that the disagreement has been worked out.
I'm also not one for "pretty over functional" ROMs, though don't get me wrong - I like pretty. But I also like having the latest features/ports working on my device (i.e. Manila 2.5).
[self-plug]
I'm actually close to (FINALLY) releasing my own ROM, which I'm *trying* to keep simple and functional (it's tough though, with so many goodies out there). My philosophy is to install as many apps as possible via CAB, rather than cooking in, which not only keeps the \Windows folder cleaner, but allows the end-user to uninstall anything they don't like or won't use. I actually created the placeholder for my ROM 2 months ago, and it's just now finally getting to the point of completion (several ports and hundreds of builds later). Maybe you'll want to check it out, in addition to the other suggestions offered here.
[/self-plug]
Anyway, just make sure everyone keeps respecting each other here in the forum. We just here to help each other. No reason to scold anyone for starting a thread. If it shouldn't be here, the Mods will take care of it.
Yes, it would be great to have a basic ROM, all,ost all the other ones are overloaded with things most people don't need...
You then could upload a package with CABS so that people can install only the things they want.
It would be great indeed...

Appreciate that you had a look here.
And wasn't scolding was just expressing what i felt.
And i think i can do that
Yeah solved OP got no problem i got no problem.
But Captain i heard that once apps are cooked in ROMs they perform better rather than when installed ?
Could you explain that ?

It all depends. If you're talking about an app that is located in \program files, it doesn't matter at all how it got there. Apps that appear in rom (in the \windows folder) can work much better when cooked in (voice command comes to mind).
I would love to have a clean ROM. I have acculmulated most of the Software that I won't already in CABs. I have found a lot of really nice ROMs out there but say in 1 I don't like this feature, or in another, I don't like that. I wouldn't mind having just a ROM cooked WinMo 6.5.#, a good radio with only Titanium setup to work with my Fuze on ATT and I can probley do the rest. I don't generally run Manila and the only HTC specific programs i really like are the HTCcalculator and the HTC Comm Manager.

[Q] Comparing different ROM features

So, new to this game, but a reasonably good tech head by trade. I didn't see any information outlining the differences between the available GTab ROMs in an apples to apples sort of way. Does anything like that exist currently? If not, is this something the community would be interested in brainstorming in a Google Doc or something? I'm happy to get things rolling if so.
Okay, so, this might be stupid, or a total waste of time, but what the heck:
https(colon,slash,slash)spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Au8YYie-Ky7kdDNQRG8zN09xYnQ2NTVvOXY1ZTFtMXc&hl=en&authkey=CJC3j5oC
I went ahead and started working up a spreadsheet. Feel free to go in and start editing, adding important features, correcting, or whatever else. If someone else has beaten me to this, just say so.
I actually think it is an awesome idea and should help a lot of people decide what ROM they want to use. I have had my GTab since Christmas and have flashed mine over 20 times. I have tried all of the ROMs available on these forums multiple times and I don't think I would have needed to if a spreadsheet like this was in place earlier.
Okay, I think I seeded the spreadsheet with as much information as I can based on the various ROM threads. It'll be up to the community to help fill in some of the remaining gaps and such. And feel free to add in new feature checkpoints as well that users would find relevant. I'll keep curating the document to keep it consistent, and will fill in more once I actually have my G-Tablet in hand.
Features, add features that we could us, so those of us who want a rom that performs the tasks we want can see which one best suits us.
just some egs
bluetooth gps support
usb gps support (dont think this will be possible till hc is availabe)
usb g3 support
proxy support
external or bt keyboard and mouse support

Neither stupid nor a waste of time: I have been wanting to do something similar for a while - decide what/whether to upgrade my TNTLite 2.2 install to, I just haven't found the time or energy.
Your spreadsheet is very helpful. You should start a thread for it in the 'G Tablet Android Development' forum and see if you can get it stickied: I'll bet a LOT of other people will find it useful too. Maybe the various developers will chime in and help you fill in the blanks.
*thumbs up!*
I for one thank you for your time and effort. I am waiting on my Gtab to be delivered and am trying to decide which ROM to use. With this spreadsheet I can see the pros/cons of the major players at a glance. I think I will go with Vega.

Tossed some extra fields in for those requests.
999pings, thanks, I'll start a second thread once I have the requisite posts to do so in the Developer forum. I was sort of torn what the right place was to post this to begin with. Mods, feel free to merge the threads if necessary once I get the second one going.
Yeah thanks this would be helpful. It's always easier to have a side-by-side comparison than having to read through a long list of change logs and hundreds of pages of comments on what works and what doesn't. I too am waiting for my tablet to come in the mail and deciding which ROM to go with. I was basing my decision on popularity and that award going to TnT based on thread activity. Of course that doesn't always mean it's the best choice. I'd like to see this spreadsheet take shape in the next few days or so
Perhaps you can model yours after one that SimonNWalker here at XDA did:
http://db.androidspin.com/androidspin_release_matrix.asp
Something along those lines would be nice once I have the data put together from everyone. Likewise, it'd be nice to find a wiki for it to live on, some place that it could continue to be maintained over time. Ideally something like this can take off in a way that it wouldn't need me (or any single person) to constantly curate it.

I don't know much about it, but there is Wiki functionality within XDA if this gains popularity. The spreadsheet/chart can definitely grow over time especially when Honeycomb comes out. There will be many more flavors of ROMs being released.

I agree, excellent idea. Thanks for taking the time to do this!
I was about to embark upon getting VPN access working using TNTLite, now I know that I can switch to Vegan if it gets too complicated.

Yeah, thanks. Forums require a minimum of 8 posts to include links. I just joined, so had to fake it a little, heh.
Thankyou TheQuicksilver!!
Sticky??
I suggest adding a column for stock TNT, and maybe even 1 for stock+enhancement?
That would be helpful for those trying to decide to stay stock or not.

Brand new to the GTab.. Picking a ROM and rooting tonight. This resource helps immensely! Thanks!
Just wanted to say thanks for this. This would be great to have as a "sticky" so we don't have to search for it, and for new owners to see at the top of the page.

[MANDATORY GUIDE]New thread naming requirements.

*Note: taken from related XDA sections.
These forums are about to explode with development now that we have S-Off/Root, so I figured we now need one of these. So from this day forward, ALL releases, whether they are mods, ROMs, Apps, WIPs, etc. MUST have their thread titles named as such:
IF YOU ARE RELEASING A ROM YOUR THREAD TITLE SHOULD BE AS FOLLOWS:
[ROM][DATE] <NAME OF ROM> [Version][KERNEL]
•[ROM] of course meaning that your release is a ROM
• The [DATE] must be in the [Month.Day.Year] form. Example: [FEB.5.11]
• The <NAME OF ROM> is of course whatever your ROM is called. BE SPECIFIC.
• [Version] OF ANDROID.
•The [KERNEL] tag is of course what Kernel your ROM uses. BE SPECIFIC.
An example title is as follows:
[ROM][07.29.2011]BertStare v2.2 *Sense 3.0* | Working Camera! [2.3.3] [Kernel 2.6.35.10]
Good idea, but are you a mod to make this a rule?
It's not in your place to make this sort of rule. A mod needs to post this and stick it himself.
I agree! It's so hard to go through the development section as it is even now and tons haven't really started yet. This should be a rule for everything (obviously modified titles depending on the project) but there are a lot of forums without a lot of information in the title
What the.....
This is funny. Welcome to Russia where rom makes you. LOL

That thread is quite useful for the quick scan through that I did. I think the only problem with this thread is the "MANDATORY GUIDE" part. If it was a suggestion there would not be any problem with it.

Well every section has one, and it's titled: [MANDATORY].
I know I don't have any actual "authority" here but hey.. if I"m able to help, I don't see a reason for Mods to have any problem with it.
In fact, they might sticky it when they see it. We'll just let them decide, to do as they wish. No worries.
No worries here. I dont cook roms anyway so it dont pertain to me. Just giving my opinion.

No, it's a problem when you tag it Mandatory when it's not. Stop playing a mod, let them do it.
My suggestion is as follows
[Rom,WIP,TUT,etc]/[State of the rom i.e. Daily, Beta, Alpha]/[Type of rom i.e. AOSP, Hybrid(sense+aosp), Sense, etc]/[Date] [Name] [Silly comment]
Example-
[ROM/Daily/Sense/7-30-11] Ava-FroyoV5 We use froyo still. yes.
Thats how i personally do it and i think it helps as many people new to roms look for those 3 things in particular.
plus i think it looks neater, and if every thread followed this outline in development, it would be a great place to be
Thanks for your suggestion. The mods will provide a naming convention in their own time, if they feel one is needed
