Error Message "the file 'Storage' cannot be opened" - G4

I have a problem with my MDA Vario (the German version is called MDA Vario, it is also called HTC Wizard and many other names). After I have switched it on, I get the following error message. It appears in the screen, where I have to type in the phone PIN:
"The file "Storage" cannot be opened. It is either not signed with a trustable certificate or one of the file's components cannot be found. Try to install it new or try to recover it."
(Here is the original error message in German:
"Die Datei "Storage" kann nicht geöffnet werden. Es ist entweder nicht mit einem vertrauenswürdigen Zertifikat signiert, oder eine ihrer Komponenten kann nicht gefunden werden. Versuchen sie, die Datei neu zu installieren oder sie wiederherzustellen.")
I only have the option to select OK. Then the message disappears. After this I can normally enter the PIN.
I don recognize any problems while usinge my device. Possibly the storage battery gets empty more quickly, but I have to watch this, if it is really true.
I tried the following solutions:
1. Switched device off, take out the batterie and placed it into the device again, switched device on
2. Normal soft reset
3. Booted without storage card
4. I deleted Data from the mainstore, to get enough free storage.
Nothing of the above points solves the problem.
I could not find a file, that is called "Storage" on my device.
Any idea what I could try? I would like to avoid a hard reset.
Thank you for any help.

Pocket PC: T-Mobile MDA Vario (G4) | Windows Mobile 5.0 | ROM Version: 3.8.2.2 GER | ROM Date: 11/10/06
Accessories: miniSD Card: SanDisk Ultra 2 GB | GPS Receiver: Holux GPSlim 236

i temporarly had this problem today when i took the card out and put it back in. it wouldn't show up under the usual dir My Device. so i opened up WMP and clicked on the library, and selected storage card, after that it showed up in my file explorer. a soft reset may also do the trick if this doesn't work. have you tried to put the card in another card reader to make sure the card isn't faulty?

This is because your device takes some time to read the storage card and you have installed a software which was installed in storage card.
The storage cards take some time to initialize. This is why this message appears. If you take out the card and run any program which was stored on the storage card, you'll get exactly the same message.

STAR100 MicroSD Card flashing

StarTrek SD Card flashing
It is necessary to format your microsd card to FAT32 filesystem!
# Empty (erase the contents) of your microSD card from the Windows Mobile file explorer or format it in fat32 from your computer using a card reader (in some cases format doesn't work).
# Extract the .NBH file from your prefered ROM upgrade: In windows use winrar (right click) to extract the contents of the exe file. In Linux / ~MacOS use [cabextract | http://www.kyz.uklinux.net/cabextract.php].
# Rename the .NBH file to *STARIMG.nbh* and copy it to the root folder of your microSD card.
# With microSD card inserted on the phone, start the bootloader (The bootloader is invoked by pressing down the Record button and Camera button at the same time).
# You should see the screen with SD Card searching, then confirm flashing on screen by pressing Softkey.
# Flashing might hang after some time but this is normal. Just wait. Complete flash takes about 25 minutes, so check your battery or connect to charger before the flashing process starts.
~SuperCID devices are able to flash any official NBH image using this method.
Yes it works ... but ... edit NBH files doesnt work too with this methode!!!
edit NBH files doesn't work at all. Because of there is no known method to create properly signed NBH for StarTrek.
i think that 1024 is right signature size, but it is incorrectly signes with any known nbh creating tool
Qtek 8500 dead
I tried to use RUU_STAR100_3.6.252.1_02.67.30_QtekNOR_Ship.exe to upgrade to the latest ROM, but upgrade process was interrupted (reported a communication error about 40% into the process); I was not able to recover via the tool.
The phone only shows the three colour bootloader screen now, with IPL and SPL 3.06.0000.
I tried the SD upgrade method described on this page, but while the phone during power-on process very briefly shows a white screen with "searching for SD card", it only comes back on the 3 colour screen and remains "dead".
Any tips on how I can revive the phone?
when your phone in tri-colour (bootloader) mode, reconnect it to PC, and run upgrade via RUU_STAR100_3.6.252.1_02.67.30_QtekNOR_Ship.exe again
PS. You phone isn't dead)
Qtek 8500 still dead
Thanks for the quick reply Erofish.
I tried the suggested step already, but it fails because the ActiveSync no longer gets established. When I plug in the USB cable in the phone, the word "USB" appears in the bottom-left corner of the three-colour bootloader screen, but the PC doesn't seem to recognise the fact that the phone has connected. The ActiveSync icon stays grey and the RUU_STAR....exe tool reports an "Error 260", indicating it cannot connect to the phone.
I did try another PC also, but no change, so I fear it seems to be a problem with the phone rather than the USB port, ActiveSync or so.
I was hoping that the SD Card flashing would be the alternative solution, but as mentioned above, I can't get that to work
I am now thinking I may have missed something in the process... I formatted the SD Card using FAT32, I copied the .nbh file and renamed it to STARIMG.nbh. I am getting the "searching for SD card" message briefly, but never get to the point where I am asked to confirm the upgrade; the screen just goes to/stays in 3 colour mode.
Whichever method may be best, but any ideas to get the phone working again would be GREATLY appreciated!
Dtroll1, turn off AciveSync, kill the ActiveSync processes or just disable USB connections in Connection settings and try again.
Did as suggested by ronswens, but am again getting the message from the RUU_STAR...exe tool that it can't connect to the SmartPhone (error 260).
Did you name the nbh file STARIMG.nbh in FAT32 sd card? I have tried sd card flashing, when i do have nbh file but cant flash,it shows "Invalid Certificate", so i doubt the nbh file name was wrong.
When my phone dead, i pull off the battery, wait half minute, and the plug in the battery(if i dont do these,i cant go into 3-color), go into 3-color, plug usb cable, and just run RUU,then it will flash, during flashing, ActiveSync keeps gray untill flash over and system boot into WM5.
I saw lot of people said, if you dont get CID unlock, the phone will easily get dead when flashing, and the only way to solve this is to send to repair.
only official NBH files can be flashed via microsd card!
yes, as dtsme said, try to remove battery for minute, and plug it again. Turn on your phone in bootloader mode (hold Record and Camera buttons and press Red Button (power))
when your device will get in bootloader mode, run RUU for your device (if you have Qtek 8500, then use Qtek rom; if you have Cingular 3100/3125, then use Cingular rom; if you have Dopod S300, then use rom for it; e.t.c)
Thanks again. The NBH file I used is an official one.
In any case- I sent the phone back, so problem "solved" for now.
I have the exact same problem as Dtroll1 - locked in three color screen (ipl 3.06.0000, spl 3.06.0000), consistent error 260 when running an updater, and no effect from putting SK_QtekNOR_3.6.252.1_Ship.nbh on a MicroSD as STARIMG.NBH.
Any further ideas?
Can I do this on my O2 Neo?

Here is a link to the OEM QTEK 8500 ROM. IF you are stuck in bootloader, you need follow the SD flashing instructions exactly including case sensitive naming of the file STARIMG.nbh. Also check that your card is FAT32 formatted and verify the file name in a DOS window to ensure that windows has not doubled up the .nbh extension

I think most HTC phones allow you to flash your phone from the card in such a fashion - the thing you have to figure is what to name the file - the name you give it varies from device to device.
Hi

I know this is a little too late... but it sounds like your SD card is too slow. For anyone else that has the same problem, make a small 100mb partition on the SD card and place your NBH file there. This will make it so that the bootloader sees the file before it moves on to the regular bootloader.

mda vario 2 upgrade not possible...???!!! cannot connect to activesync with usb

i have bought a second hand mda vario 2 (=tmobile branded htc hermes). when i connect a usb cable, it charges fine, but i believe the usb connector is broken. it charges fine, if you put the cable under a certain angle. leaving aside this problem which is impossible to fix, it is not able to connect through activesync!!!!! so i cannot update the rom. the device is simunlocked, but not cid unlocked. i tried to download Des' SSPL program and ran it while renaming the wm6 rom to HERMIMG.nbh (off course i extracted both executables, after which i ended up with RUU_signed.nbh (93 mb). i renamed this to HERMIMG.nbh). so i put the des sspl program and the renamed image on a format sd card and ran des sspl. but off course, it did not work... since it is not supercid, it cannot upgrade from sd card.
so does anyone have a solution to supercid the device without using the usb cable to activesync (bluetooth activesync maybe???) so i can do a sd flash?
maybe someone else has a solution to upgrade both the rom (os) and radio rom??
any help is appreciated.
i've tried mtty ==> but usb is not recognized at all, so that didn't do me any good
can i apply hard-spl over a bluetooth connection?
same question for removing the cidlock, can i remove the cidlock with an bluetooth active sync connection?
i also tried another computer, different usb cables, reinstalled activesync several times, tried as4.2 and 4.5 on the different computers... the usb cable only charges the unit, it is not recognized as a usb device.
i also tried several hard reset with and without letting the extended (tmobile) rom install.
problem fixed
MDA Vario does not sync with PC
Hi,
I am also trying to update my ROM for MDA Vario II. How were you able to fix the problem. Can you pls. let me know.
Thanks,
install rom from SD card
1. get a Micro Sd card under 2Gb ..
2. Format sd card Fat 32.
3.rename the rom file to HERMIMG.nbh.
4.copy the HERMIMG.nbh to Microsd card root.
5.Put back the Micro Sd card to the phone.
6.Hold ok button + power button and push the reset button by styles pen.
this will automatically start to install the rom.
PLEASE be sure you all are hardspled before do any any any any any any upgrade or rom change!!!!
Yep, What + Que PPC said, only in caps....
don't have Hard SPL, you're probably looking at a brick unless you're REALLY lucky and the rom is compatible with your carrier (NOT LIKELY).

USB to MicroSD on AP4, How about USB to MicroDrive

as title, is anyone have any idea how to make USB to MicroDrive working on AP4 Rom?
I could use the USB-to-PC to setup as a card reader which is USB to MicroSD but not MicroDrive.
You will need to change
HLKM\Drivers\USB\FunctionDrivers\Mass_Storage_Class\DeviceName to DSK1:
it will work fine - transfer speed is also good
If you want storage card later you will need to change back to DSK2:
It would be nice if we can get this as settings in AthenaConfigApp
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good useful post thank you, needed this myself!
Jay
It is worth noting that when the USB to PC option is turned on as Data Device and connected to your computer via USB, the MicroDrive will dissapear from the device side. Disconnect the USB cable and refresh your app (File Explorer, etc.) to get it to show back up.
Copying files to/from with this option is very fast.
Thank you this helps!!!! Good info.
How do I make this kind of setting change in my athena?
Is there a program for this?

In programs/system you will find regedit.
Choose from the small drop down box HKLM and follow the path.
Tap and hold "device name", then "edit"
Use WM5torage 1.73
I have found that WM5torage 1.73 is very reliable and also precise. You can switch between MicroDrive and storage card. I have used version 1.73 and refused to upgrade to higher version.

I used WM5torage 1.73 to smoothly transfer the whole MicroDrive files to PC by using WM5torage 1.73 this morning. After installed some apps to the MicroDrive this afternoon, I discovered WM5torage 1.73 refused to work with MicroDrive by saying that MicroDrive appears not to be properly formatted, it may contain operating system, and by using WM5torage 1.73 may damage the operating system. I still pressed "OK", and device hung. I have never encountered such problem when I used AP 3.0 before. After I switched USB to PC, no issue at all to transfer the files between the device and PC. Therefore, I just use WM5torage 1.73 to connect to SD, and use USB to PC to connect MicroDrive.
Try WM5torage 1.72 instead, is working with my Athena

Thank you, you are right. It did work.
Yep, works for me
I don't ever use an SD card (not yet anyways)
USB to PC didn't work. Device manager stated that the USB mass storage device driver didn't work properly and I could't see my Athena in windows explorer
Thanks to your little reg edit. It works now: windows recognizes a mass storage device to which I copied a 422MB folder in 128seconds
Thanks man
By the way, this was my first ever reg edit 'Big Smile'

Upgrading ROM issue, Please help.

Hi,
I have an O2 Atom Life which has been flashed by the latest official WM6 Rom via a USB cable and DDSU successfully.
I have since tried to flash to the following “PDAVIET ROM WM 6.1 CE OS 5.2.20753 Build 20753.1.4.0” via the SD Card method:
I have formatted the SD Card to FAT16, copied the AL1.DIO file, got to boot leader screen (Record + Reset), selected option 5 and inserted the SD Card, phone has detected the SD card but unfortunately I get the following error message “-> Found Mini-SD ->Files check error, cannot download MOT “. I have since tried including various files from the official Installation on the SD Card but I still get the same error message, I have tried every possible combination I could think of but its always the same error message.
1. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Should I maybe try another ROM, is there another good one available for Atom Life?
2. Is it possible to flash this Rom using a USB connection and DDSU? (e.g. replacing the Flash.DIO file with AL1.DIO file, renaming it in the Windows\Temp folder and then trying to use the official rom upgrade application? Or will this method Brick my phone, has anyone tried to do that?
Thank you in advance.

[Q] The phone doesn't fins the SD card ?

Hi ! my phone doesent find my sd card anymore ? I have a Transcend class 6. I've tried to formate the phone and card but nothing works. The sd card works fine in a card reader but not in the the phone.
If anyone knows how o fix it, then please help !
PS. sorry for the bad Englsih.
EDIT : It also works if I take "disk drive" it's only when I take "active sync" it doesen't work
When in active sync click on explore when next window opens
click on My Windows Based Mobile based Device
You will then see the storage card
förstår inte riktigt hur hur du menar. Men om jag fattar dig rätt så är de samma sätt som jag alltid kommit åt mitt minneskort.
problemet är att minneskortet inte syns när jag använder active sync
if your HD2 connected to your computer, if so just unplug it and then restart the phone and you should be able to see it. The SD will never show on your phone if it connected to a computer since the computer only has access to the SD card. If it doesn't still work most ROMs have a SD Format, run that so it will be a compatible form.
Yes! thanks a lot ! It works now after the sd format !
