I believe it does. Because if you start the program with out any data connection it will exit out. And if you are trying to go on a trip and need directions or are trying to follow the map it wont update unless you have a constant data connection.

Are you using a Custom ROM?
Because I hear that some Custom ROMS have the AGPS feauture disabled. This is what is used for cellular traingulation ( using the towers )
i think i figures it out for now guys....... i didnt know that i had satellite gps on my phone already . i loaded all the appropriate roms from this awsome site!....... so now im just looking fo an easily hackable gps navigator i think ill try tomtom for now but i gotta figure out how to load and register the iso to my pda........ if i like it ill definetly buy it but i want to sure and safe this stuff isnt cheap

It's my understanding that Sprint doesn't use towers to locate position, so you can't use the Mogul to report your location with towers...you would have to use the GPS.
TomTom is working great
Works great with or without cell signal and easy to install and fix.
Is there any GPS program that doesnt require a data connection? Some that have a local Maps database. I have GPS receiver but i dont have a data plan so can't use google maps. Any suggestion? PathAway is one of them but that thing so complicated to use..and expensive

Yes there is. I personally use Tom Tom Navigator 6. This is ONLY the GPS software. I believe the other versions of Tom Tom have the software and a bluetooth GPS receiver in the package ( more expensive ).
You can also use the GARMIN GPS software. I believe it is a little bit cheaper on the price then Tom Tom, but It might lack some features.
I'm sure there are others but those two I believe these are the most known / used.

Actually I find the Garmin has more features than the Tom Tom.
and the latest version of XT has a much better addressing system as far as finding addresses.
I live in a Rural area where roads sometimes have two names because two routes join together....
Tom Tom doesn't recognize one or the other route and will sometimes only take the lesser known route as input instead of the major roadways designation.
Both are great navigators though...I just prefer the garmin.
do you guys know how I set up the GPS after the ROM upgrades? I have tomtom, but it doesn't recognize the internal gps
It was my understanding the location from cell towers doesn't work on 6800 in google maps???
Am I reading this thread correctly that there IS a way to get this to work?

The original version of google maps doesnt use cellular triangulation (towers / agps) the NEW Beta Version does. Also if you don't like Google Maps you can also use Microsoft Live Search.
To get the New Google Maps Beta w/ Cellular Triangulation go here:
http://www.google.com/gmm/mylocation.html?hl=en
If you want Microsoft Live Search Mobile visit:
ls.windowsmobile.com on your cell phone via your designated browser.

Enable Location On instead of 911 on your cell phone first.
You can go to the dialer and press the menu button -- options -- services -- location setting and press GET SETTINGS and enable Location on.
The go to start -- settings -- system -- external gps : make sure that on the programs tap that COM4 is set on the GPS program port menu. On the hardware tab chose NONE as the GPS hardware port menu and for the baud rate choose 4800. Finally on the access tap check the Manage GPS automatically box
All that is to set the GPS to work on GPS software (tom tom, google maps, microsoft live search ......)
Now to the Tom Tom part.
Once Tom Tom is installed and still doesn't get a GPS signal you must then configure the GPS to work with Tom Tom.
Initialize Tom Tom. Go to the Change Preferences Tab ( menu tab that looks like a wrench)
Look for the Show GPS Status Icon ( it is a Satellite ) then click on it.
Once in click on the Configure Tab on the lower left side.
Select the Other NMEA GPS Receiver when you try to select a GPS Receiver : then once selected you will be prompted to change the baud rate ( make sure it is 4800 ). Once you click done you will have a menu stating " GPS is Connected to" and you must choose COM 4:
Now your done.
The bad thing about the GPS in our TITANS / 6800's is that it is not always running and it needs to warm up / initialize first in order to get a signal in any application.
You can either wait until it picks up a signal or download a program to help you initiate the GPS receiver when you want to use Tom Tom.
I'll provide you a program that helps initialize the GPS and then launches Tom Tom for you. ( This saves time trying to warm up the GPS and then looking for the Tom Tom app and running it)
Dont get irritated if Tom Tom doesn't recognize the GPS right away it might take less then a minute when you are in your car or are in sight of the clear sky. Tom Tom doesn't seem to work well in doors.
I hope this helped you out abit.
If you rather choose another GPS warm up / initializing software you can research on your own. Im just supplying you with something that works only with Tom Tom.
Once you download the software extracted in your computer....and copy the software to your device not the SD card - \windows\start menu\programs
This is not a CAB it is an executable.

So if I read this right, you want to use a GPS-like function that doesn't use GPS satellites. You want to use cell towers to do triangulation. Navizon makes a product:
http://www.navizon.com/navizon_v-gps.asp
It can provide GPS data output but it does triangulation via cell towers and wifi access points.

Hi mates,
I was wondering all navigation programs on HTC Hero need Wifi or Internet connection?
Because there is a charge using mobile internet....
Is there is a solution via GPS like on HTH Diamond I had Destinator and there is not any charge for using it!
Any ideas?
The only one I am currently aware of that doesn't require a data connection for routing is CoPilot but more are in the pipeline. They do require a large amount of SD card storage space though for their maps.

All "turn by turn" navigation programs use GPS - it is the map "source" that can online. Copilot uses the SD card to hold its maps, so it doesn't need a data connection in order to work.
According to Intrinsycs website, the product you refer to, Destinator, is available for Android though I can find no link to purchase it.

I have had success running CM7 on internal memory with CoPilot Live USA ($4.99 from the market) in conjunction with the free Bluetooth GPS Provider app also in the market. You can't beat that--$4.99 for a 7 inch GPS. I've taken it on a 500 mile trip and it performed perfectly. Stay away from Sygic Aura--it doesn't allow for mock locations.

Read original post, he bought an external GPS blue tooth unit which he connects to the nook.
I just use my phone hooked up through an audio jack. I'm lucky enough to live where I don't have to worry about not having a data signal.
Disregard my previous lack of common sense. I can't see the forest for the trees sometimes. I need to look into this Bluetooth adapter. Sounds convenient.
I also have heard there is an additional bit of software needed for this to work as eluded to in my first post. Anyone know what I'm referring to? I will have to check out that CoPilot software.
You need the Bluetooth gps provider app. It's free in the market.

I was just about to buy this app, but the reviews don't look great. You've had good success? Will Google maps store maps? I thought they had implemented an "offline" feature. Are there any other apps that store maps so you don't need to use data?

Copilot is usable - but it does have a bug that requires a wifi connection when you first enter a street address and it does not call out street names while navigating

I haven't experienced the bug of having to have the wifi connection on when entering a street address. And as far as not calling out the street names, it does tell you when to take a right (take the next turn right in .3 miles) or left or exit, etc. The street name is displayed on the Nook, so it is quite sufficient. If it called out even the street names what need for the beautiful Nook display?
I use Google Navigator on my phone, same would apply to the NC of course.. Online maps are great until you need to route somewhere when you have no signal.
A few weeks ago I routed to a back-country location, got there no problem. Leaving however, I had no idea how to get back out as I had no cell signal. Had to bust out the old TomTom One from in the trunk.
I haven't looked into CoPilot, but I've heard various bad things about it.. Price is right though, if it's usable. On WM6 I paid lots of money for TomTom + NA maps.
OK, so I bought the CoPilot app, but it just tells my device IMEI number is invalid and won't let me proceed. Any ideas how to get around this?

Well that sucks.. Piracy measure I suspect, and our IMEI is of course fake since it's not a phone.
I've seen others claiming that it's working for them, so I'm not ready to give up just yet.

Calla969,
What were the installation steps you took after you purchased CoPilot live? Was it the CoPilot Live USA version?
What ROM are you using?
Mine installed fine and is working as we speak. I originally installed CoPilot USA on the SD card with experimental bluetooth rom. Then when I switched over to CM7 on internal memory I restored app and data through titanium backup. I'm currently running it on CM7 tablet tweaks RC1. I'm using a Garmin 10x receiver, bluetooth, mock locations, and satellites enabled, GPS bluetooth provider apk.
*** Edit: Found the problem. It is the most recent update from the market. I got the same IMEI number error. Just restoring now with the previous version (8.2.504). Yes, that's it. Works with this version. Maybe there is a way you can get this version of the apk? PM? ***
Pm sent.
I'm running the latest tablet tweaks version of cm7.

I doubt any of them would differ... I get the same range on both of mine on phone and NC.... Both of them mere inches on the NC, where I get 3-4 feet using my phone.
Personally I like my two GPSes for different reasons... My Holux 236 for its accuracy and robustness. And my Columbus V900 for its built-in datalogger, albiet it being about 4 meters consistently off from its real location and -80 meters in actual Altitude.
CoPilot USA
I sent a trouble ticket into CoPilot USA when I got the IMEI error. They dropped a new version about 3 days ago that fixed that problem. New version is 8.2.0.590. When I can get Bluetooth talking to my GPS receiver, CoPilot USA does work. (I strongly prefer TomTom but the price is right for CoPilot USA!) My ROM PhireMod 6.0
BLUETOOTH QUESTION: What Bluetooth application do you use? I’ve tried BlueGPS for Android (1.2.1) -Error msg “Too amy connection problems”; Bluetooth GPS (Googoo Android V 0.5.5p1) -Error msg “Service Discovery Failed”; and Bluetooth GPS Provider (Works most of the time – but seems unpredictable). I’m interfacing a Bluetooth GPS receiver.
So, is "Bluetooth GPS Receiver" from Market the best Bluetooth App?

Is gps a real gps or actually a-gps? Seems all tablet and phone want to confuse people this.
The GPS on Galaxy Player is a real GPS and it is pretty accurate. However, you need to find an app that DO NOT use data connection. May apps require you to have a data connection and it will give you an impression that the GPS is not working.
People have been talking about this in this thread.

Technically it is not a GPS... It is an aided GPS through the use of cell phone towers, so yes A GPS. It is very accurate though. Use Navfree if you want the use of offline maps. No internet connection is required once you install the maps. Hope this helps.
Yes it has Both..
AGPS when you have WiFi connection can be achieved.. much faster fix.
Once you had already acquired this and had initial fix, it's much faster to have a GPS fix for days..
use app like "gps status" free from market.
Note: It uses Satellites so its more easier to have a fix when you're outside and have a clear sky.
Two apps that come to mind for offline map is Map Doyd and Nav Droyd.
In map droyd the maps are free but Navdroyd will cost you a small onetime fee.

It can receive assistance from the network, but unlike many AGPS solutions, it does fairly well when operating standalone. It CAN lock fairly quickly when standalone, the only other devices I have that lock as well standalone are my Tab 10.1 and my GS2. (Original GalaxyS devices and the Infuse have GPS receivers that perform horribly without assistance.)

GPS is free,
As for data ,
It really depends on the App you are using.
For example :
Google maps requires you to download the maps which would require data.
Try Maverick GPS app
Try Maverick, a GPS app without the need of data or wifi.
You can d/l the lite version for free off the market.
Wont give you a great navigation but it will do the job for free
Also try Navfree.

You can pre-cache a 10milex10mile square in the google maps app but you'd have to know where you were going to go in advance to cache the areas but this can be done during a trip whenever you have wifi and know you're changing cities. No turn by turn or searching but at least you'd have a map you could plot your position on from the phone.
Well, most phones have A-gps, that stands for "assisted GPS": it is not the same as the common gps in Tom Tom devices and so on.
A-Gps has less power consumption, but a weaker receiver so, without the help of a data connection, it would turn to be quite useless, apart from the maps that should be loaded in advance.
GPS positioning data is always free..
You just need the right software to do turn by turn nav (Like Sygic or NavFree / etc)..
You can cache maps off of Google, but that won't give you turn by turn.
Sure GPS connection is free, but data run on 3g or 2g network to assist the GPS. May be it's not a big amount but, if you're travelling abroad, it won't be so cheap
I wonder if the main population will ever understand what a-gps are.
You can use iGO MyWay for android. Easy program and it dosn't connect to internet
Straight from Wikipedia. Now it'll be clear that a-gps needs data connection...
Standalone GPS provides first position in approximately 30-40 seconds. A Standalone GPS system needs orbital information of the satellites to calculate the current position. The data rate of the satellite signal is only 50 b/s, so downloading orbital information like ephemeris and almanac directly from satellites typically takes a long time, and if the satellite signals are lost during the acquisition of this information, it is discarded and the standalone system has to start from scratch. In AGPS, the Network Operator deploys an AGPS server. These AGPS servers download the orbital information from the satellite and store it in the database. An AGPS capable device can connect to these servers and download this information using Mobile Network radio bearers such as GSM, CDMA, WCDMA, LTE or even using other wireless radio bearers such as Wi-Fi. Usually the data rate of these bearers is high, hence downloading orbital information takes less time.
AGPS downloads very little data and it doesn't even require cell service. I have a non activated Android device and using GPS Status it will download AGPS data over wifi. This data is pretty small in size and you only need it to initially lock on satellites faster. Without AGPS data you'll just have to wait longer to get a lock.
For an offline GPS app, I use Sygic since it uses TomTom maps and I've owned a TomTom unit before. But there are other good ones out there.
Yes, there's no contraddiction between all that has been said by both of us. Not a huge data amount but if you are abroad and a roaming area it won't be cheap, because the data flows any time a fix is needed... Just think of tunnels and areas where the GPS signal is weak. I mean, the fix is not one only, it may be 20 or even 100 during an hour of navigation.
