Maximum amount of SMS in a thread - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wondered if there's a maximum amount of SMS messages allowed in a thread from one person. Does it just keep going up until the phone runs out of RAM? ...or does it archive older messages eventually like the iphone?

The messages are stored in a database and called by SQL, so technically its memory based and will run out when the phone runs out of memory.
Can't imagine there is a limit, not that I have seen. To 1 person I have a thread of 1222 messages.

Ok thanks. I thought 150 to one person was getting high!

The thread of messages, will it have a page display? i mean wil the thread maximum show 10 or so messages and then if you want to see older ones you can see previous pages for this?
I'm thinking that a thread of messages with 1000 sms will slow the thread view down alot?

When I was up to 150 messages it slowed a little but not much. The more annoying problem was that I couldn't scroll the mesages at all sometimes. Now I have the new ROM it might be different, but I haven't built up enough to test.

[Q] Combining multiple incoming texts

I did some searching around and couldn't find anything like what I was looking for, wondering if anybody here might know more than I do.
Just about everybody knows about the 160 character limit for SMS messages on CDMA networks. What I was looking for was an app that takes incoming split messages and combines them into one whole message. For example, somebody sends me a 2 part message: (1/2) Blablabla160 | (2/2) continuedblabla.
Handcent SMS has an option to make the messages closer together in the conversation list, but I'm looking to actually combine them. Any way to?
Hopefully I'm not the only one who thinks this would be a nifty feature... Anybody?
Hello?
*crickets*
I'm flabbergasted at trying to understand what it is that you're asking for. The texts will always come in as separate texts because they are sent as separate texts, if that makes sense.

Makes sense, but I think his idea, if I am understanding correctly, would be smart.

It would be great, but unfortunately it's just the nature of the beast.

Just curious. What difference would it make?
I have looked for this too (I came from a GSM network, T-Mobile) but after a while you get used to it, although GoSMS doesn't add the 1/2, 2/2 to messages you send. Just make sure to uncheck the "CDMA Message Split" option (or something like that).
I believe this is mostly carrier dependent, as in who the senders provider is. I am unaware if any app that currently does this. Is there a real reason, or do you just prefer the symmetry/conversation style?
Just OCD like that =)
I know it sends/receives as seperate texts, as stated, I was just wondering if there was a texting app or something that would be able to do this. I've only ever been on CDMA networks (Amp'd Mobile -> Helio -> Verizon -> Sprint) so I've never NOT had the 160 limit, but I think it's just an annoyance. Never cared much, but now with all these phones can do, I figured somebody might be able to fianlly do something about it (even if it's only cosmetic).
I have handcent, and can choose to not split texts, but I'm sure sprint would still automatically split them at the 160 mark. I have it set up now to split by word and add a counter (the whole 1/2 2/2 thing).
Probably a pipe dream, but yeah, figired I'd ask ^_^
Maybe once Sprint upgrades their network to 1x advanced, rev.B, LTE, or whatever the **** it's supposed to be, it'll be possible.

Send text without sending text?

I know the title sounds a tad confusing, but that's because what I want to do is kind of confusing.
I want to send a text to a phone number, but have my phone not actually send the text at all, meaning that there would be no chance they would ever receive it, but it would make it look as if I texted them (I know I could edit my text logs with an app or some sort of SMS restore app, but I want to see if there is any way to do this).
All help is much appreciated

hmmm... i see what you mean.... you need a messaging app that has the capability of allowing you to send "duds." ive noticed that if you have multiple messaging apps, sending one with one app shows in the others, so i assume they all use the same database for storing your sent/received messages. so actually, what you need is one that toggles a block for the messages, telling your phone you successfully sent the message while keeping it from leaving the phone. the best way for it to be integrated would be a setup where you hold the search button to toggle the block. this would let you send a message in front of someone, have it injected into your logs, and it not really be sent at all. i dont know of any app like this, but if you are a developer yourself (im not. im on this site because its helpful and i like it.) or if you know one who can do it, it seems like it wouldnt be difficult to make, although root would be a likely necessity.

try it within the first 15 mins of getting it, and if youre displeased, go back to the market page and hit refund.

Exactly what I am looking for, is a way to send "dud" messages. Anything or any way to do so would be absolutely beautiful (I only wish I was still a developer. I got to C# and stopped years ago, then never recovered back to my potential).
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you sir

ATT messaging app limits picture size

Just a complaint I guess. I assume this is the same for everybody.
I use GO SMS but have problems with basic text entry frequently. It is irritating. So I end up using the ATT messaging for text and GO SMS when there is an attachment.
Anybody else have either problem?
(Stock ATT with ICS.)

I use handcent after some suggestions on this and other forums. It works great and has no limitations + its free.

I used handcent, but switched to gosms, because of how they both handle animated gifs. Handcent would always show them small, and would never zoom in for me. It's a small gripe, but I love getting lolcats images from my friends, and removing the extra steps on getting the files to view properly was clutch.

Where does it say there are no limitations? ATT allows 600KB. Occassionally you can send up to 1MB but I still call that a limitation.
I swear I messed around with all the top texting apps looking for something as good as what iOS comes with. Not really interested in theeming too much, but I like it when they look nice. Seems like they all have some level of compromise.
Basically what I want is: high quality mms images sent, and group mms texting that works well.
AT&T Messaging compresses their images pretty heavily, has good group texting though not always a fan of going full screen when you start entering a text and not being able to see the conversation. At first the images were only tiny but they fixed that. Also I do like the full communication flow (vvm, call log, etc). (A-)
Go SMS had a setting where you could send uncompressed images. Group mms worked but was wierd; I'd get 2 notification sounds when I recieved a group mms because there was a slight lag between receiving the mms and go adding it to the group thread causing it to beep when I got it, then beep again when it was added to the group thread (gap was usually 1 second). Also, go seems to interfere with AT&T messaging (B+).
Built in seemed to have a group mms function however it wouldn't display the names of the individuals speaking. So it read like me or the crowd. Also mms images seemed to be compressed. cool:
Handcent to me did not seem much different from go and kinda looked unprofessional (apologies I kinda skimmed it, when I used it on GB briefly it didn't do group mms, then in ICS just didn't differentiate much over go). (n/a)
I tried ICS messaging by Tim Hutt (and later the JB version) it looked f'n awesome, LOVE the UX, however group mms didn't work for me.
I came from an iPhone (3G & 4). Overall like the Note more, but I keep feeling that the iOS messaging app works better (texting with it has other caveats like, attaching files is more cumbersome and the auto correct is maddening). But it sends group mms pretty transparently and entering the text in full view of the conversation flows more naturally.
Not trying to "hate" but in terms of texting it seems that everyone gets that part right, and then tacks on visual junk like themes instead of nuts and bolts like group MMS and images.
Group mms has always been an issue with android. Sometimes it work some times it doesn't. It only seems to bother those that came from an iPhone. Mostly due to they are the only ones that ever used it lol

Handcent because friends have iPhones and they group text a lot. Handcent is the only app that can thread group conversations correctly. Google team needs to implement this into the next OS!
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke

"take a deep breath, make sure to get a good look at it, relax and slowly take it in, the size is overwhelming at first but you will have a happy ending afterwards".

yeah, that's probably true. Trick is, you use something, get used to it then don't have it or it works poorly you want to recapture it. Andriod wants to steal users from iOS need to get "party chat" working.
The thing is, the information is in the message, I really don't get why its a big deal. When you have an AT&T app that does it better than everyone, seems like something's wrong. I never figured AT&T as a development powerhouse but they're getting something done better than samsung to be sure and maybe Google? Just strange to me.

[Q] Script to spy on Whatsapp

Hello,
I've recently came up with an idea to spy on whatsapp easily. This is purely for fun purpose. I don't have idea whether it will work. Many people want to spy their friends/gf/crush whatsapp, but they're unable.
My question is:
Is it possible to develop such a script on a rooted android phone that will run in the background and send the Whatsapp messages backup file (*.CRYPT) over email? Android on Whatsapp takes the messages backup daily, so if this .CRYPT is sent anonymously the spyer will be able to see the last day's messages.
Let me clear that this is just for FUN! No personal interest.
Thanks.
To be honest, its spying, tapping an account without notice. Its illegal even for fun purpose. If it could be done you already know that it will also be done with the wrong reason.
I can't find the fun factor in tapping others accounts....

Oh! well, its okay! No offense. Lock the thread.
No it was not intended to offend anybody at all, but lets turn it around ....you won't like it yourself if someone is "looking" with you at your personal chats....how unharmful it may seem

[Q] SMS not received - How many sms can be stocked in memory ?

Hello,
My question is : how many SMS one can stock on his MINI PRO sk17i before some problem of reception occur ?
Explanation :
My daughter has a mini pro sk17i and this summer (june and july) she did not receive several of my messages while she was away with her mother.
My provider (we have the same provider) told me all my messages were sent but some were not received.
The problem according to the tech and what he saw : a receiving phone with too many SMS stocked.
I did several searches to know how many SMS one can keep in memory with a mini-pro, but couldn't find any answer.
Does anyone know the answer ?
And beside this question/answer, I have another question : how to know how many SMS one stocks on his android phone in order to manage this and memory/reception problems ?
Yours,
Renzo

almost 200 to 500
it differs frm rom to rom
Hello,
And with the original (stock) rom, how many SMS ?
And how to know how many SMS one is stocking ?
Theres practically no limit
All the sms is stored in .db database file and the .db it stored in phone memory. Few thousands of sms is equals to only few kb, or mb of .db files.

Hello, it's confusing.
Who's right, who's wrong about the stockings of SMS in the MIni-Pro ?
As I said in my first message, my provider tech told me it is a problem certainly of internal memory limitation.
Then someone tells me it depends on the rom, but it goes from 200 to 500 sms.
And now you seem to imply there is not really a limit.
And you know what, Sony support told me they cannot tell.
I'm going a bit nuts.

Hmmm...there is not limit how many sms you can keep in stock roms cause sms is not keep in sim but in your internal memory...custom roms however you can put limit how many sms you wanna store...after the limit is reach, old sms will be auto deleted on order for the new sms to be store.....
basically if the phone doesn't receive some sms, just reboot the phone...the sms will appear afterward...is not then i suggest you flash stock roms again...usually this problem will doesn't appear in stock roms but custom roms do...in custom roms its not cause by the the roms itself but mainly because of the custom kernel......

not actually unlimited, but limited to only how many of internal memory u have. your provider is right it depend on phone (internal) memory because thats where the sms is stored in form if .db database. considering that, u can store thousands of sms and the database for the sms will only be few kb's. now i got around 3000 sms and the database is only 752kb. its /data/data/com.android.providers/telephony/databases/mmssms.db. based on that, rought calculation if 30000 sms will only be around 7.52mb.
Thanks,
Things are getting clearer for me.
I guess a problem of SMS not received might be due to internal memory limitations (with original stock rom) and not to the number of messages.
This answers also the question of ckecking and managing how many sms one stocks.
As soon as I see my daugther I will check how much "free internal memory" she has ... and tell her to eliminate a few apps she eventually installed and see what happens.
Till then,
Cheers and Thank you all.
