i'm looking for somebody to build me a pda-phone that recognises handwriting in landscape format and runs voice recognition software (ibm viavoice 10 for usb). it seems to be impossible for technical reasons i don't understand, but if there's a programmer/engineer out there with some tips, i'd love to have such a gadget for my work. thanks.
why dont you get yourself a TABLET PC?
I'd love to build that for you. Your budget is at least $3000, right?
And would you like fries with that?
The handwiting in Landscape form already exist doesn't it?
Select Transcriber as your input method, then click the black arrow in the bottom left so that it points to the left (i.e. to the top when you hold it in landscape).
Viavoice (sorry don't know if it's version 10) also apparently works on some ipaqs(H3600, H3700, H3800, H3900):
http://www-3.ibm.com/software/speech/ipaq/mobility_suite/sysreq.shtml
and since they are running PPC2002, I assume they also have Transcriber?
Oh! and if you want to make it a phone add the GSM expansion jacket:

Is this just irony or could you seriously do a custom build PDA/Phone for $3K?
If someone gave me $3k I know I could come up with something. It seriously would not be that tough to integrate various accessories currently available into one case, write custom software, etc... I made my own "laptop" in 1992.

thanks carlos. just returned from 2 weeks biking across switzerland and black forest - thus the late reply. i'm in france and you're in arizona. as you know, our mobile networks are different over here. besides that, i guess the rest is just a matter of hardware/software engineering and programming. maybe you can send me an email to [email protected].com with a description of how you foresee us making this happen. please also include how you arrived at the $3000 figure. looking forward. best, commandante
There is such a device already on the market, Ms OS CE, PDA, Phone incl GPRS, GPS. (bluetooth/802.11?) waterproof, drop tested. but, they are Not cheap!! try www.gotive.com

Nice device, but *way* too big to use as a personal device.

Excellent tip!!! Thanks a lot Peter T. After visiting the website, I think what I need is a WEC that is preferably very flat & will do or let me do these 4 things:
- (hand)write on screen (horizontally) with a stylus
- convert my handwriting into text (even for up to 2-hrs of note-taking)
- run IBM's ViaVoice 10 voice recognition system - this seems to be tough
- use a bluetooth headset for longer phone conversations
The Gotive H41 is the closest thing I've been introduced to - but I'm not convinced it can handle the above - but maybe it could be modified (??). Many thanks for any further advice you may have. Commandante
By the way, the big size doesn't bother me - but it looks like they made the casing too thick & heavy for the screen (no?). Anyway, I'll buy it, if I find the answers to the above questions.

Hi Peter,
I sent you an email 2 days ago and didn't hear back, so thought I'd try to reach you here again. My question is whether the Gotive H41 fulfils the below system requirements - or whether it can be modified to fulfil the below system requirements. Thanks, Commandante

wow you need a full PC not a super pda, no the H41 will not meet your spec. on Gotive site you can get a pdf of their full spec.
Yes, you can change the screen, yes, you can use the CE form of Word, Yes, you can load up the memory for a price, yes, it will talk to Win XP, but, :? sound cards on a PDA?? running IBM Talk sholdn't be too much but I am at alost as to how you load that app, the H41 is sync loaded like the XDA, for this operation you need to turn the program into an image, or use th Mem Car, there are some good apps on CE sites that may help. I use the GPS with OziExplorer, and the Phone, but the hands free causes humm / side tone, and voice is somthing Gotive are working on, MicroSoft are behind the upgrade path and you know all about that.

thanks again for your tips. i was internet-less for the last 3 days (terrible!). last week i wrote to gotive and they agreed to test the handwriting-to-text and voice-to-text software if i could send them the respective "trial versions". any idea where to get such things?
in the meantime, i've written to speereo to see if they have voice recognition software that would allow me to convert voice to text using the H41. could i ask how much you paid for your H41? (didn't see any prices on the website).
just on the side, olympus makes a dictaphone (ds-150) that you can record on and then plug it into your computer while it converts your speech into text. but this only works in combindation with IBM, thus my hope to find a way of putting this magic to work on the H41, which seems to me to be an excellent pda-phone. all the best, commandante

This bloke is sitting next to a woman carrying two huge shopping bags on the bus, this woman pulls back her sleeve and starts laughing at her arm, the bloke peeks over and sees she is watching a little television no bigger than a watch, then the woman says to the watch "alright deary I'll be home in 10 minutes"
the bloke turns to the woman and says " that's amazing it's a tv and a phone no bigger than a watch?"
"yes" says the lady "it's also a mini computer, temperature gauge and a laser pointing device"
"WOW" says the bloke "how much did that cost?"
"funny you should ask" says the woman "I'll sell you this one for £50"
"£50, your on!" says the bloke digging notes out of his pockets.
the lady hands over the watch and the bloke says to her"thankyou very much but I've got to go it's my stop next" he stands up and starts to walk to the bus door.
the lady calls him back"here deary ain't you forgot something?"
"err what?" says the bloke
"your batterys" says the lady handing him the two huge shopping bags.

I have and love a Kaiser. Right now I have a Dutty Rom on it and love it as I commute, on a train, about 3 hours a day.
Anyway, I made a bet (6 pack of beer) that I can use an Athena for a week instead of the Kaiser. [We have one that sits unused in our office]. I have the Black Rom on it and wasn't overly excited when I made the change.
What should I install to ease my life and win my bet?
Use TCMP for videos, the Athena has a nice big screen. Both the NetFront pre release and Opera leaked alphas are good for browsing the internet. I would recommend using RealVGA if you would like to really utilize the large screen, 96 DPI is awesome. Compared to the Kaiser the Athena has a bigger screen, more storage and at least on paper a faster processor. I personally use a software keyboard and ditch the magnetic one to reduce to size of the Athena.
does the RealVGA thing work on the kaiser also?

No, Kaiser isn't a VGA device and if it were, the 400MHz Qualcom would struggle. It would probably be dog slow.
what a stupid bet
Well ok, I no longer have an Athena and I got rid of my TyTn 2 after a week so perhaps it's not my place to comment..
BUT WHAT THE HELL KIND OF BET IS THIS????
Fine, the Athena is a bit big, but what the hell is your problem with applications? IT'S THE SAME OPERATING SYSTEM so it shouldn't be much of a hardship unless you're an absolute doink.
Perhaps a better challenge might have been to live with a Motorola StarTAC for a week....or even a Nokia 6210.

Hmmmm not so sure. Maligned as it might be I can't help but love the old N95 classic. I've got an 8gb card for it and it's the most satisfying phone I've ever used....still. it even has embedded flash support and an accelerometer so the screen rotates automatically when i turn the phone.
Unfortunately there's nothing in the Windows Mobile world to touch it yet - I'm very much a multimedia guy and there's nothing comes close to the carl zeiss optics of the N95, the 30fps video, the flash support, the hardware acceleration, the huge array of multimedia applications and (finally) proper GPS support with Garmin XT or Route66.
The nearest phone to the N95 in the windows mobile world is probably the TyTn 2 and i'll never go back to that again:it's an inferior toy in comparison.
I'd wager a bet you can't list five things i'd do on a Kaser that I can't do on an N95 (aside from the obvious outlook calender issue which is not an issue for someone like me who doesn't use outlook)
one day i'll be back though no doubt.

leoni1980 maybe you could be more specific. What do you do with your Kaiser and why do you like it? Why weren't you happy with the black rom on the Athena? Why is there an expectation of hardship/w Athena?
You said that there was a train commute. So . . .your thinking entertainment? To "ease your life,"; since we know nothing about you or your life that's a hard one. Don't you think?
In general: Windows mobile devices are all-in-one mobile devices that do alot of things ok/good. In my opinion, they rarely do anything specificly the best. Read e-books--likely the kindle does it better. Listen to music--buy an ipod. Surf the net--desktop or laptops are more powerful. And so on.
So you need to figure what it is you like to do. Then evaluate whether windows mobile fits your needs. Then tweak the Athena in that direction with hardware and/or software.
Seems alot of work for one week.
If I had a three hour commute, I'd surf the one-day deal sites, & winmobile/news sites. I'd read e-books, listen to music and do writing. Maybe listen to sleepy music/set my alarm and take a nap. I don't even use the phone side, rarely watch movies, have no use for a pim.
Another guy would want to chat on the phone, and watch tv. Still another guy would want to sms, play games . . .
Keep track of your time, finances, diet, movie collection, appointments . . . Facebook, chatrooms, twitter, look at porn, read the Bible . . .
I mean . . . you can do all kinds of things.
Hi, XDA Folks !
nice to meet you... I am new here and this will be my 1st posting. This forum really looks cool...
I have searched for the thematic "skin" but nothing found in the threads. So I let my request come out.
Anybody an idea where to get a "Dell Streak" Skin ? - I am just in re-design of a multi-functional website (blog, media player/web tv (stream), html5-PDF-Reader, twitter-tweets, photo slides, eShop etc. ...), which shall be re-designed for compatibility visited by mobile devices (especially with Android OS) etc. ...
So the idea is, as I did a 1st test successfully with the HTC skin (thank's to Sickbox for the "HTC Droid Eris AVD Skin") to check out how all looks on a bigger screen as the Dell Streak has. If you read PDFs (html5) of Scribd on HTC it looks horrible. Not very practicable... maybe I need a specific "plugin" to swap a PDF format into a "pure text" format for the smaller screens of smart phones.
Anyhow, the new bigger screen size (5 inch, WVGA (800x480)) looks very interesting, as it might be used as an eBook reader, Video player, same good for web browsing with community ability (Facebook, Myspace)), a mix of mini PC, smart phone, iPad and Kindle, maybe (In Germany we say: "The egg giving whool milk pig" (eier-legende Wollmilch-Sau).
People who do not need it for heavily telephoning on the road, the bigger size is OK, I would say. Much better for SMS writing than the tiny key buttons like on a Motorola or for heavy business users the BlackBerry (which now is blocked in Saudi Arabia, same will be banned by Indian Government as just announced, so it looks so fare RIM does not decrypte the email traffic).
I'd like to test the Dell Streak 1st via Android SDK as it is too expen...sive, yet to buy(maybe Dell might sponsor me . I would do all of usability test what should be done, Mr. Dell - even in very rough conditions (and not in a laboratory).
Seriously: This tablet PC (so I would call it) now is offered for German market since 5th August. But !!!! - If you calculate the whole price you fall off the chair, total costs with some extras (e.g. car set, bag, etc. ...) round about 900 EUR. Oh, thank's dell you reduce it with 29 EUR free shipping. (! A joke !). Definitely too expensive... for 900 EUR you get something much better. I am very happy with my DELL Studio 15 laptop I use since one year. It costed only 900 EUR.
In UK via O2 ( www . o2.co.uk/dellstreak ) it seems little bit cheaper with a
2 years contract (monthly 41.88 EUR/35 GBP). But !! - Again a big But ! - After Amazon just prized down its Kindle to 140 EUR (189 US$) and you same can get a HTC Android smart phone cost free with a flat rate contract for 30 EUR per month (European provider 1&1) I think, Dell has to re-think about its huge prizing... I would pay maximum something between 350-450 EUR (inclusive shipping free) for a Dell Streak contract free... that would be OK.
Anybody knows about the source for downloading the skin? I use Eclipse and Android SDK on a Windows Vista mashine. Yeah, yeah... don't beat me ! - I am not a developer, just a user mainly in focus for "media producation" and compatibility of web content. (Rec.: As Dev of course I would use Linux (which I use for a RAID system)
Would thank you for a tip or even a zip file with the skin . So fare... TC/Take it easy. SM2010.
Welcome to the Streak Family my friend
tks lufc for the warm welcome... so I see: you are already a proud Dell Streak owner, hm ? - Or do you have it on your wish list like me ? - How is it in UK with that geeky man's toy ? - You have a button posted "SIM FREE/Unlocked". What does that mean ? (Sorry for my 1000 questions, I am just curious - job sickness.) Can you only buy the Streak with O2 contract on Green Island? So fare I am informed correctly O2 introduced Dell Strike in UK... I really would love to get one (but not for 900 Euros).

You theoretically should be able to get the streak for around 500 euros.
However I'm not sure if you have any referals websites like we have?
www.quidco.com give 10% off the order with Dell, therefore it becomes £400 then convert that to Euros....about 83p per Euro?
Hell, send the cash to me and I'll order it and send it over to you!

German market is covered exclusively by DELL on its own (via Dell . de website). We have no (virtual) retailers here. For the Streak Dell deals with MediaMarkt which is one of the biggest multiple shops for Electronics (in any form) over all the country. Very unusual Dell does this. As I am already customer at DELL, hereby I get nearby weekly special price offers "voucher coded" directly, regular its 5% price reduction.

OK, got it, round about 482 EUR. Will check out Quidco. That sounds much better than 900 EUR (which is all inclusive truthfully to say.) - The basic price (Dell Strike Red or Carbone) for home office user in Germany is: 628 EUR (inclusive shipping which is charged at 29 EUR).
Many thank's for your offer, Amdathlonuk. 1st I like to check out the screen (see my 1st posting in this thread).
Still have the hope that anywhere in the world a developer created the Dell Streak skin for Android SDK.

As far as We all know Toshiba response to all or at least most of our problems is null. But nevertheless I won't stop until i get flash support. People have the right to have Flash working, specially when Folio was sold under this flag. I don't really care if Adobe is not willing to certificate Folio or not. They still have law and order to obey and Toshiba can run but it cant hide from from their own responsabilities. If I had bought a car and it was supposed to run have 5 seats I will not even accept it if it cames with 2 front seats only. The lack of video and ebook market seems to me to be not a single country issue, so there's no will from them to have this to work.
I will continue to send mails and calling them every week.
Much Work as been done by this comunity, but not a word from Toshiba! They will have to answer our claims!

I wish you best of luck with that. many of us here have tried a lot but toshiba doesnt even recognise that they have released a device called the folio. they already forgot it or dont want to recognise that this tablet has their brand slapped on the back.
i called the customer services for nordic toshiba, 99% of the people to who i talked to there didnt even know that there existed a folio!, the other 1% just declined to acknowledge the folio existense but after some convincing, they agreed that they knew abt this device and that it is no longer supported as it was forced to be pulled from the market!
I agree with Kaivish, last time I called to Toshiba there isn't even a phone option for the Tablet. Nor did the people on the other side know about it, despite the Tablet has been out for at least 3-4 months. After some call forwards to different departments, I finally ended at someone that did know something about it. Even that person said that its not normal how Toshiba is acting regarding the Folio.
Guys from Toshiba are pushing their luck! They will end up jobless!
Here in Portugal when you call Toshiba, "Problemas com Folio" is the first option on the IVR. This could be because guys like me don't stop fight. Is not so much because of the money, is because they promise so much and delivery so litle. I did open my Folio to check the unresponsiveness problem and i easly found it. Why they don't do the same?
They told me they don't have a repair center here, so my guess is that if I send it for repair it will take for ever to comeback.
Before I fixed'it my self, I tried to replace it for a new one the store, but all of them have the same issue (I tried 7 of them). At Toshiba they also offer the option to replace it for a new one, but I imagine that it will endup with the same issue (hardware revision were the same that mine).
Regarding Software updates, we are lost and we won't see any upgrade soon. I will have a brand new samsung tablet soon (from the company I work) , expect to have 2.4 or 3.0 so I'm don't hurry to much.

After i glue the screen plastic cover i decided to open it up and to see what was causing the problem and i came to the conclusion that the problem is that one of the connector to the screen as a plastic on the back to make it easy to pull it. This plastic makes pression against the screen cover from one side and agains the conector from the other. This is explains the gap mentioned and the fact that pressing the low part of the cover helps with the screen lag. I just used a piece of tape to keep the connector in place an pull the plastic away. Is that simple to fix!
In this way, did you fixed also the problem of crazy flashing buttons?

El Reg has a story that adobe certification is now achieved, and the folio will go on sale again in March (without any UK exclusivity). Also says 3.0 will not be allowed by google because of the hardware spec.
What means "El Reg"?

I don't believe that they release Folio 100 again whithout a major overhaul, software wise. They know that a large amount of problems were due to software issues, and support teams were pushed to far with Folio. For their own good they should have learn their lesson. I guess that flash will not be the only thing changed in this realease.
To have a solid presence in the market, software and content support must be greatly improved, and this don't need android 3.0 to be achived. If they just drop the product they resign to have a strong presence in the market of tablets in the coming season.
If they are clever enough and have sneak peak at other tablet with 2.2 Froyo and look what they done (Notion Ink). I don't see nothing wrong on using 2.2, as long apps are supported. Sure honeycomb looks nice, but it will consume resources and from the start won't be so polished as 2.2 already are. I am one of those guys that still uses XP on the deskop PC. In Honeycomb We don't have need for hardware buttons, but this could be easly implemented on 2.2, but i don't see this as a important feature. The 2.2 GUI could be improved by using a homereplacement app and diferent keyboard also. So the only thing we need is fast drivers and cool apps
I hope nvidia don't stop supporting Android 2.2.
I did notice that the actual specs for honeycomb are high, I must remember that android sucess is in part due to being easy to port and be used in not so high end platforms, so most of the people can buy.
Even if honeycomb is for highend tablets now, a few month ahead the prices for this hardware will drop and honeycomb will have his deserved specs.
Although I think Folio 100 is capable of running android 3.0 (screen and buttons issues apart) manufactures will leave it as it is, for marketing reasons mainly.
Is like having a powerfull PC and even though its only a few months old it doesn't run the last Windows version, because we are using a small TFTT monitor instead of a large one, or even a keyboard without a windows key.
The idea behind is to push up sales, and force customers to buy new hardware! This happen in PC market for a longtime and now comes to new arrived tablet market. This doesn't mean they should forget support for present devices.
Best of luck to new Folio owners, if any one had of this new, flash compatible folio please report
Regards,
bastospn
I totally agree, btw toshiba is a big player and must not leave all folio 100's customers alone. I was in talk just today with toshiba's assistance: they are deciding if replace or repair mine (crazy buttons and unresponsiveness).
On the box it says"supports" flash, have they just changed the wording to get away with not installing flash?
Finally they decide to repair it: no replacement...

hey everyone
i've got chance to trade my htc diamond for tg01 but i sold it before(it was brand new) so i've got cash now. i see prices here around like 100euro for used tg01's so i wish to know if it's worth buyin it.
i'm usually hd2 guy(using it 1,5 year) so how do these devices compare(seeing pretty close specs). would you buy it again if you have choice?
hoping to hear first-hand
thanks

tg01 has near same hd2 specs, has a good resistiv 4,1" lcd. here is often the problem, devices around 100euro has scratches on PLASTIC screen. for 150 - 180 you can get a well-kept device and this is worth. with a good modified custom ROM is a good and fast WinMo device. ROM flashing is very quick and easy- this make a great fun.
you have a grat choice of different ROMs and Radios .i would buy it again (i have actuall 3x tg01, 1x very used, 1x good and 1x exellent)
pozdrav, miro

yes it is a great device to mess rouund with and it has loads of fun roms. it will go well with your hd2. both have nearly the same specs. get one!
thanks guys will ask for pics etc and then see. guy said he bought phone in germany 6m ago, so we'll see
i saw rom flashing.. damn that's simple, no hspl's and ****, like good old omnia i had before hd2. but this is pretty brickable right? i mean flashing hd2 with corrupted(or even empty-task29)rom results only stuck boot(and reflash as concequence)

An excellent device in nearly all respects. As indicated above, is easy to flash and has opened up all sorts of opportunities for development both large and small.
Good resistive screen - one key reason I went for the TG01 - enables handwriting recognition and detailed pointing with the stylus when you want it, but also pretty sensitive for finger touch also when preferred (trick is setting screen sensitivity in registry, either manually to taste or via a generic .cab). Best of both worlds really, while the now almost ubiquitous capacitive screen is of course incapable of screen writing.
Main regrets are:
- Lack of a 3.5mm audio jack, but a suitable dongle works OK in the uUSB port
- Inability to charge while using the USB port for audio out
But both of these can be addressed by using a Bluetooth headset adapter, thus freeing the uUSB port for connection to an external device (eg. charging or perhaps an external hard drive, memory stick, etc.)
Definitely a very respectable piece of kit which continues to have significant potential
Best regards,
Kevin
