Flash your phone with a ROM that doesn't have those programs.

Hi mate! I have read before that you can delete the folder from file explorer right away to delete that program. Try to search first, i'm not sure if my memory serves me right.
Much better try out those customized roms out there. Just go to the ROM DEVELOPMENT thread.
Goodluck mate! Cheers!

I'll give it a go deleting in file explorer, i cant remember if i tried that but it left the icons about though.
I might take the plunge & give a custom rom a go.
Ta for the suggestions

Problem deleting startup/shutdown tunes

Like many others, I desperately want to get rid of the obnoxious startup/shutdown tunes. I read the tips & tricks sticky on where they're located so I'm clear on that. I'm rooted and I installed root explorer. When I get to the directories and delete them, they come right back even though root explorer says it was deleted. I can't get rid of them! I tried Android Commander and it won't handle it either. Anyone have a solution? I cringe evertime I have to power up/down this thing! I WANT PEACE AND QUIET!

Try the stock Galaxy I9000 start up shut down sounds. It is barely audible. There are plenty of links posted in forums. Quick search should help, use the rom manager, boot into recovery and install zip from SD card. Had good success with that and no more pink & loud boot sounds.

I've seen the I9000 stuff from the tips & tricks sticky. I don't mind the t-mobile logo it's the sounds that I don't want and would rather just remove them. Not looking to replace them with anything. Thanks for replying though.

Did you try replacing the files with blank - or silent sound files? This might give you the fix you need - silence and replacing the files. I can't imagine what the issue is with the files not deleting. I've changed mine many times without issue.
odd man, I deleted them just fine.... do you have something that would be restoring these files on your phone?? Makes no sense for them to keep coming back, at all.
I'm as perplexed as all of you. I could say it's a problem with Android Commander, but even when I try it from apps like Linda or Astro I get the same result. I can't delete or move them off.

How to properly use Titanium Back Up??

Hey All,
I would like to ask anyone who knows how I can properly use Titanium Backup I would really appreciate it. The problem i've had before is that when ever I backup I never seem to know how to properly back up my apps so I can also back up the data like my saved games on angry birds, and my tags on sound hound. If I back up and thn restore I always mess something up and my roms end up all screwed. please some one guide me!!!!
I usually only backup user apps. Press the options button on the bottom left of the vibrant. Then choose batch, then choose backup all user apps.

Like I said though, doing that only backs up the apps but it doesn't back up the data i.e. shazam tags, etc.

I always select Back up all APP + System data option and that should work
There is a thread on the proper use of Titanium and the best practices, its on my list to find and study today. When I find it I will post and edit.

Edit: I found it in the captivate section. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808255
In addition above is some good advice on Rom manager I use both.

im interested in this too.
the pain of setting everything up again is actually the only thing keeping me from flashing a new rom. (flashed my mytouch so much that i only kept a few apps)
and can the free version do everything the paid version can do?

thanks alot. I'll look at it now. I hate flashing ROMS sometimes because I don't get my app data. It sucks having to start Angry Birds from leverl 1 every time I flash something!
I use mybackup pro n backup apps. ..gives option to backup apk + data. Has worked well for me. Don't have re -download apps or anything.
I know this doesn't necessarily answer the question but it gives a way to backup apps+data(bookmarks, texts, call log, settings, etc)

I'm no expert. But I suspect that this issue could be caused by a bloatware app that is necessary for that action but was moved. Did you manually remove your bloat or did you use a ROM to do it for you?

that is possible.....I really didn't delete bloatware apps...just renamed a few.....do you know which bloatware app controls this function so I can check?

I would THINK the safest bet for you is to back up your current apps with titanium and then back up your current ROM in nandroid and re-flash. I mean its a simple solution and requires a bit of time but unless you know exactly what you are looking for (and I am sure someone could tell you on this website) then you are more likely to cause more harm to your phone.
Sorry I can't be more help.
edit: also renamed, deleted, moved the apps. Pretty much all the same thing. The phone is looking for something and is not finding it where it should be. At least this is what I assume gleaning off the error you posted.

I can do all that......but..even if I backup my current rom and apps with titanium.....the program that I renamed will still be there......don't think a fresh download of Perfect Storm will help..
thank you very much for helping!!
Voice search. Doesn't that control it?
I pretty much deleted everything
Im,news,wheather,stocks,Widgets(that are unnecessary)
I think the probably is. The fact that renamed them. And the system cannot find the name. System tells the user basically I cannot find the other file. Thats my hypothesis.

Stock Apps that are safe to remove

Now that we have root I'm sure ROMS will start being developed, but in the mean time does anyone have a list of apps that are safe to remove from the stock ROM? I'd like to do a little de-bloating while we wait for more ROM choices.
Also, I loaded up "Root Browser Lite" so I can browse to /system/app and delete the apk files there - is this the best way to get rid of the apps that don't allow themselves to be un-installed?
root uninstaller will let you freeze system apps or uninstall them if you wish to do so
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rootuninstaller.free&hl=en
as for a list, I don't have one sorry, I just froze all the ones I knew for sure wouldnt mess with anything

First off, you're in the wrong forum to ask a question. Secondly, two posts down from yours is the script for removing bloatware, which includes a text file which contains the list of files that can be safely removed. Please put a little more effort into looking for your answer before asking it next time, and make sure you ask it in the Questions subforum. Thank you.
To answer your other question, I personally use Root Explorer (paid app) to remove stock apps and do anything involving files on my phone. I create a folder, '/data/app.disabled/', and put the apps from '/data/app/' that I don't want in there, in case I want/need them again or the phone breaks without them.
Also, if you're worried you'll break your phone by deleting or moving them, you can freeze just about all the stock apps in Settings -> Apps, or use Titanium Backup to freeze them.

Yes, I did find that and read it. I was hoping for an even more extensive list, but I'll experiment myself.
Actually, I discovered (via Google) that in ICS you can go to the "All" tab in Manage Apps and have the option to disable almost all of them. This seems to not only keep them from running but also takes them out of the Apps drawer - and it works without root. Surprised Verizon hasn't found and fixed that
And sorry for the breach of etiquette in the original post - I considered it to be a "Development" topic (in the form of a question?) and wasn't sure if the Development crowd watched the General Q&A forum.

You didn't need to go to Google, because I included that in my original reply, which takes you to the same place. Also, it's the first trick in my 'Tips and Tricks' thread, which is linked in my signature.
And around here, most of the development crowd currently does look at all the forums. It's not a large community yet, so there's not usually a lot new to sift through in the course of a day.

Sorry, no offense intended. I did the googling before reading you're reply. But at least you got the opportunity to advertise your 'Tips and Tricks' thread.
I'll try to avoid posting anymore today since that seems to make you grumpy...

lol. I'm not grumpy, nor am I trying to advertise my thread. Every post I make advertises my thread. I didn't mean to come off as abrasive, just trying to point out the post could have been made in a better place. Don't be afraid to ask something, I'm not trying to scare you off. lol.

[Q] Prevent OTA after root 4.4.2

Hi. I had no problem after following various threads finding out how to downgrade from 5.0 to a release prior to june 5th 2014 and towelroot but I do not wish to buy mobileodin and upgrade or ever end up with 5.0 but I can not find the answer to this anywhere...
How do I block OTA updates? I have found most devices you can change the extension of one or more files under system/app and that is how I would like to do it if possible. Thanks
PS I even tried searching Prevent OTA, Block OTA, Stop OTA, so I'm sorry if there is a thread on this already and it looks dreadfully obvious to someone else.
There are a couple of services you can freeze with Titanium Backup but I think you have to have the Pro version (which means you will have to pay) but if you are rooted, the OTA won't install successfully anyway. It will download and warn you that it's going to install, and then try to install and error out.

what services? will titanium tell me which ones? If I know what the services are and their file names, can't i just add ".bak" or anything to the file names? This is the problem, I dont know what they are called. I'm considering getting titanium anyway, so thanks for that info.

Sorry but I don't remember which services they are. But if you do some searching you should be able to find them in these threads. Titanium Backup will not tell you which ones. It's just a backup program. But it does have a lot of features and can freeze programs you don't want to run.

I did a simple Google Search on "services to freeze to block ota on S5" and found many articles that talked about it. You might want to give that a try.

when you say "found many articles" do you mean you got many hits? I have gone through nearly every one of the first couple pages of results I got from that search before comming here. The only one that actually talked about the specific files did not mention the T-Mobile variant, and the files for the other variants were not the same. All the other results refer to different phones entirely, or talk about using an app. (which is not what I'm asking). There was no reason other than to be a jerk to tell me to google it. If you actually found an answer, why didn't you just tell it to me? Right, because you didn't, because it's not that obvious.

Thanks! Do you think adding ".bak" to it or something will be enough, or would it be better to just copy it to PC and remove it entirely? (I just feel more comfortable having it to put back if ever).
If I don't get a reply, I will just remove it to be sure.
