As title,
This could more than likely be a majorly stupid question but is this a possibility?
+1 for this, even if it is very unlikely
there was a very active thread on this a few months ago, but it seems to have died out. bb messenger relies on the use of a unique pin, which is given to you from blackberry. the issues people had was getting that pin. roumer has it that bbm exists for WM, but is only available for employees of RIM/blackberry. if you search the forums, there are ways of getting bb software on your phone, but i havent tried any of it
Hmm, intriguing!
Will have a little look at what has been spoke about in the past and see if anything somes up in the future.
heads up the Pin is actually derived from the IMEI no.. apparently blackberry passes this no though a series of algorithms to get the PIN
BBM is a closed system that only allows registered PINs to access it, over BIS/BES so unless your device is registered with either one of those services even if you had the app and a PIN , it would not let you in.
never gonna work, buy a bb if u need bbm
Dont need one, was just interested!
its a shame, in an ideal world blackberry would release it for wm, but im pretty sure they would lose sales from people buying their handsets just to use bbm! ive been looking at getting one on pay as you go, and having the blackberry service pack from t-mobile added and paid for out of the topup credit, but it works out a bit expensive, considering im already paying £40 currently.

This does not sound very good if true. The Fascinate is only a good phone because of the developers. It sounds like Verizon may already know who we are (as in, those who have rooted) and may have evil intent planned.
I can not go back to Stock on this phone. 2.2 w/ voodoo is the way. 2.1 Stock, please say ain't so! (That is if Verizon doesn't choose to deactivate us first). I don't tether so maybe they are only targeting that crowd...
I think I will not upgrade until a phone comes out that doesn't require rooting or ROMing. May have to put up with some bloat, but the new phones don't need to be overclocked, and the Dual Core's (rooted or not) seem to have virtually no lag. Android provides much custom option even without root.
I really hope the Galaxy SII comes to Verizon. I have my doubts.
I'm straight up leaving any carrier that does this. I refuse to let a random company tell me that I cannot do what I want with a device that I bought, especially given the inherent open nature of Android.

This is not going to be pretty. Anyone remember Napster? Ticketmaster?
I don't think there is any confirmed source for this that it is actually happening, just that it could happen along with the locked boot loaders to "protect" users.
This sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen...
On Monday, the U.S Copyright Office ruled that jailbreaking an iPhone or other mobile device will no longer violate federal copyright law

And as far as I know it is still legit to this date. So there is nothing any company can really do once the device is paid for. Now I don't know if this pertains to subsidized phones or corporate phones.
I would assume that doing this would be a HUGE violation by verizon and any carrier who participates. It is law that we are able to do what we want with our devices....for now.
Didn't they do this exact thing with the Moto Droid 1?

Sounds like FUD to me. There is very little financial incentive for VZW to do this. Track yes, but do anything about, no.
VZW would quickly find that it's better to sell a unit for whatever reason than to lose a sale to another carrier/phone. (AOSP?)
Look at other embedded devices.
Linksys found it's better to just live with allowing 3rd party firmware than to fight it. They continue to offer a 'full' linux version of the WRT54G routers. Newegg even promotes it as being compatible with DD-WRT.
Since getting my android I don't keep up with media players but as far as I know, no providers are blocking RockBox. This is from 2006 but I still think shows how some companies embrace the value of 3rd party firmware:
"CNET reports that SanDisk is courting open source developers to port Rockbox to its popular MP3 players. SanDisk is currently the world's second most popular MP3 player manufacturer after Apple. Rockbox is an open source OS for most major MP3 players".
Carriers mostly get your money up front (and in your monthly usage bill). Not much financial incentive to stop how you use your phone. Ask yourself this. Why does VZW allow Google Maps if they offer VZ Navigator? Simple they sell more phones by including Google Maps than by 'forcing' you to use VZ Navigator.
Just my 0.02
Yeesh, I payed for the phone, and am paying for the data plan and all those other crappy fees. They better at least let me do what I want with the phone itself.
need to read this. from the guys at blackhat.

if they shut off our service it will be legal. itll be in contracts. if you dont like them and wont sign them then you wont get service or whatever.
ugh.
what makes me mad is that devs and companies leak roms etc to us on purpose so we can test them better than they could in-house. pretty cheap testing if you ask me. then then fix things and release the offical updates.
just go after the bandwidth and warranty abusers.
I will not purchase another smart phone if this all comes to pass. I left the iPhone because of the draconian control the corporation exerted over *my* device, if Android goes the same way, I'll leave them too. I'd sooner drop back to a no-frills cell phone than to put up with a locked down and bloated to **** smartphone.
hasnt this battle already been won?? i mean with the Geohot situation last July that resulted in "jailbreaking" or modifying any mobile device being made legal? i dont think there is really anything they can do even if they do track us down and see who is rooted . mobile devices are safe im pretty sure . and hell , if Geohot comes through on this ps3 situation , gaming consoles will be too .
i suppose like the article says , they could deny us data ...maybe . but im pretty sure the law that was passed ... making it legal , would deny them the ability to punish us for doing something thats legal ..
i dunno , will be interesting to see how it plays out . if it does happen ... someone , somewhere , will find a way around it .

iPhone's jailbreaking was never illegal even before the reassuring news press event. This has been covered by many different news.
However, it is the company's decision to go with whatever policy they want. Apple clearly stated that it is your decision to jailbreak your phone, but this will invalidate your warranty.
If Verizon starts cutting off rooted users, I will find a new carrier. They already rip us off with their pricing, but dictating how we use our phones? No way.
It isn't like anything illegal is being done with our phones. I root it to take off the **** that they put on. I rooted it because they won't hand over my 2.2 update. I root it so that I can customize it to my liking. A rooted phone is what Android is supposed to be like, not the crap that Verizon (or even Samsung) feeds us.

Rooting/jailbreaking being legal wouldn't, in any way, stop carriers from deeming it a violation of the terms of service and denying access to the network.
The issue with Geohot was that Apple was trying to get the act of Jailbreaking considered a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and therefore, illegal. The courts concluded it wasn't, but the carriers can still draft any terms of service they like.

If they do go ahead with this it will be because of the largest data users being the ones most likely to flash a custom kernel that removes data throttling and enables free tethering. If 75% of the people who would be paying for tethering and use the most data aren't paying for the data/services then Verizon would see that as a huge loss of revenue and undue burden on the quality of their network.
Average Joe would view these users the same as P2P torrenting file sharers. Thieves. The term "root" will become synonymous with "bittorrent" even if you don't use it for mischevious practices. Both will be considered bad. You have to realize average Joe doesn't root or even understand it. The number of people who they are targeting is like 3% of Android users but they are probably using 20-30% or better of network resources. Its a win-win for Verizon. They lose relatively few customers and gain back a ton of network resources to sell to average Joe.
Bet your ass if its not already in your Verizon contract that using modified or unauthorized devices on the network being a breech of contract, that it will be added before you renew.
I have no issues with carriers tracking rooted users for the purpose of finding those that are tethering illegally (ie. without the proper data plan). However, if they start shutting off users that have rooted their devices just for the sake of rooting and cleaning them up or improving their functionality, that is over the line and I'm sure carriers such as MetroPCS and Cricket would love to see a nice new crowd of users come their way.

The bad part is, Verizon won't miss us. We are tiny. They stand to gain far more than they will lose.
One solution if they are tracking who took their ota update would be to odin to stock, receive update then just odin/flash back to super clean or whatever you use

Hi All,
Recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S2 from Gumtree online. It was only working on o2 network so got at unblocked from a guy at a market stall so that it works on all network sims. It was working fine for about a week but then randomly came up with a message saying "emergency calls only" and I coulnt make or recieve calls or texts even if i changed the sim to o2. The internet was still functioning correctly however.
Called network provider and have been told that there is a bar on it by an insurance company. Tried to get back to the seller but have not been able to contact him. Have reported him but I would just like to know is there any way to unblock this phone at all? Dont want to lose out on all the money spent on it. would it be worth downloading any unblocking applications if the phone has a bar on it?
Please any ideas, comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Apologies for the long message
Thanks
Sounds like you have bought a stolen phone. I don't think the network will undo the blocking. You might have to list it on eBay for people outside the UK.

Circumventing such a block is illegal in most countries and discussion on it is therefore not allowed on XDA. I'd recommend contacting the police.
Handling a blocked phone is technically handling stolen goods. Attempting to change the IMEI and therefore unblocking it is very illegal
Some people sell on a phone and then report it stolen and get it blocked and there insurance gets them a new phone. This is also illegal, so you should report it to the police...
I work in a fairly common second hand store, and it's a fairly common occurance for someone to sell in a phone and then have it blocked so they get a new one for free. Bastards...
Yup contact the police, as the phone is likely flagged now as being "stolen", meaning the original owner committed insurance fraud...
This happened to me with my Galaxy S 1. Ended up selling it outside of the UK because outside the UK is the only place it would work.

Yup,
same happened to me, my first smart phone turns out it had been "found" in a car park. IMEI blocked in the UK gutted but lesson is now learned.
looked into changing the IMEI but that carries a 5 year custodial sentence so written it off as expensive lesson that needed to be learnt.
OP i do feel worry for you that you have spent a lot of money on a phone which has been blocked, just a warning to others, never ever buy anything like smart phones (or anything expensive really) on that gumtree website which is a hotbed for criminals and fraudsters, the person you bought this phone off probably got it themselves as an upgrade, they had insurance on it, they advertised it on gumtree and the mobile number they gave was a SIM card they'll probably never use again, they sold the phone, a few days later (or less) they reported the phone as stolen and it was subsequently blocked, they claimed another one on the insurance and they have your money and still have the phone, this scam has been around now for a good while which is why you should never buy on gumtree and if you do ask for a receipt and proof of purchase and i guarantee you the seller will try and say they will give you a written one, don't accept it and move on.
AVOID GUMTREE LIKE THE PLAGUE
Thanks for the replies everyone. Lesson definately learnt. Have reported it to gumtree so I wonder what they will say.

I doubt they can do much mate, the person you bought it off probably posted it from an internet cafe so their IP address couldn't be detected and no doubt created a fake email and obviously used another SIM card that they no doubt threw away.
Gumtree are a disgrace IMO, they are only too aware this happens but they don't post any type of warnings on their website, it should be quite clearly stated when purchasing any type of expensive items like smart phones that the prospective buyer always asks for a receipt and / or proof of payment (clearly not everyone thinks of this)
By all means report it to the relevant people but in this instance im afraid your probably screwed, sorry mate

Hi,
I've been reading around the NL/WP8 forums here for quite a while and just wanted to share my horrid experience at the MS store at Washington Square.
I'd been waiting and wanting a Nokia WP8 device since the rumors began and with some odd luck suddenly had a work related trip to the US for the first time. On my last day in the US I had a few hours to do some shopping and landed up at Washington Square mall in Beaverton, amazingly appeared before me a MS store :good::laugh: . Went over there, played around with the NL920 & 8x, I was originally a bit concerned after reading so many reviews pointing out the weight issue of the 920. While standing there naturally the sales personal starting chatting with me, I immediately stated I was from overseas and that fact I was very interested in the 920. The first lady mentioned that there's no problem using it overseas, again naturally I was surprised and quite suspicious. I kindly asked if she could verify this with someone "technical", to cut a long story short after about 15 minutes standing there and talking with 3 different MS people, the "higher up" insured me "The AT&T logo is just for sales reasons". Sadly my overseas SIM (& phone) were standard and not the Micro variant so innocently I took their word for it and left there a jolly shopper.
BUT once I got home, replaced my SIM with a Micro SIM via my cell carrier I was amazed to discover that it's locked!
I don't want to sound like an imbecile or an over innocent person, I simply believed what 3 different (and very convincing) sales people told me, it was "just what I wanted to hear" but I still couldn't believe the misleading would be so blatant.
Emailing MS & Nokia was completely and utterly pointless, they didn't even say they'll check it out or even make sure the salespeople are aware of this. They both responded that they basically don't care and tried to blame each other, and just ignored my replies without even a word of response. Such disappointing and non-existent customer service from two companies that really need the consumers to back them.
Just wanted to share this with you people and make sure no one else gets scammed by 'em, it isn't too much fun getting home after 16 odd hours of a long flight and work trip to discover you have a giant wp-Pod (even though it's quite a cool device)..
BTW, really appreciate all the people here trying to find and test out unlocking services and as everyone hoping something new comes up soon.
R.
Unfortunately, I'm not surprised. People in this country (even those who work in the Microsoft Store or other U.S. telecom company) have no idea what the difference is between "unlocked" and "off-contract". They also don't know the concept of frequency bands either.
I was at the U Village Microsoft Store in Seattle, WA a few weeks ago. Just for fun, I asked an employee if the Lumia 920 is pentaband. The employee couldn't answer so he ran off to ask another employee. He started a chain reaction. Pretty soon, 5 or 6 employees tried to answer my question. Eventually they just gave up and said that they didn't know.
This past week at the Bellevue Microsoft Store, I saw a couple looking to buy an unlocked Lumia 920. Needless to say, they had a long discussion with the MS Store employee and weren't really making any progress. Eventually I interrupted and showed the couple my unlocked Lumia 920. I gave them a few options (Negri, GSM Nation, etc.). I also told them that they can go up to a Rogers Store in Vancouver to buy one and have it unlocked for $50.
Moral of the story is to take everything you hear at a U.S. tech store with a grain of salt. Most of the time, they don't know anything. Occasionally, you'll find one who actually knows the stuff, but that's extremely rare.
If you need advice on the phones to buy, you'll have to take your time to do research on the internet and ask people on forums. Most of us know a lot more than retail employees.
I hope your situation works out though. I would continue to talk to Microsoft since they were the ones with misleading information. I don't think AT&T and Nokia can help you, since they're not the ones who sold the phone to you.
This is what I have heard....>The phone would work overseas. As long as you are on AT&T (or their partner).
try this
You can try calling up AT&T, explain what happened and get the unlock code. If you browse wpcentral forums you can find folks got the code.
hawc1506, I completely agree about the research part but simply after reading a few times that people did get unlocked devices from some stores, and the fact I actually took out my overseas SIM and "waved" it a couple of times, I was a bit too much of a "sucker" and believed what I'd heard.
After I responded to the MS rep via mail they just started ignoring my email, and when I spoke with AT&T (via Skype) they basically said that only if I join them I'll have some hope.
Someone sent me an IM saying I should try post a YouTube video of the story and as much as I'm really against that kind of "child play" I don't think that any other common-sense will work with these companies and every time I fiddle with my shinny micro-pod it annoys me more.
Thanks for you comments everyone , I do hope at some point we all find some reasonable way of unlocking these devices (better sooner than later )
Well in desperation (+ 2 recommendations by people) I decided to YouTube my story both to share and maybe that'll be the miracle that will cause MS/Nokia to actually pay attention to a customer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdRMQ4pC884
Please excuse the poor experience, it's my first ever video and Powerpoint doesn't seem to convert the audio
P.S. I reviewed the forum rules and didn't see anything against my video so I hope it won't be a problem.
As was mentioned, this was a misunderstanding on the part of the store and I'm sorry you had to go through it. Unfortunately, as was also mentioned, it is not common for Americans to purchase devices SIM free/unlocked. As such, most places have no idea what that even means. I ended up in a similar misunderstanding once in Italy several years ago where I'd spent €450 to buy a Samsung Android phone, only to discover that there was a common defect with the screen. I wanted to get my money back, but the common policy in Italy is that one can only exchange for other goods. As such, I was pretty much forced to find €450 of electronics on which to spend the credit. Lesson learnt.
Hopefully you'll be able to get it unlocked or re-sell it on eBay.

Yeah, after a reset and some tinkering I was able to get it working again.
Did you see Verizon's terms on the watch? $349 on contract and $45-$55/month Doesn't make sense comparing it to the other OEMs. The wildly different prices and terms from the big three are going to come with restrictions. Think about it, why would you buy the watch from Tmo for $400 if you can just walk to the ATT store, pay full price, get it unlocked and save $100?
After a good talk with a friend at Samsung, he said that right now the remote notifications are being handled by Samsung's servers... But not for long. That control will ultimately be transferred to the OEMs. Updates to the watch and phone app could soon kill the ability to receive cross network notifs. According to him, this will happen in two stages....First, through the mobile data connection, then via Wi-Fi.
So far, I have hit one road block after another getting this device unlocked even tho I paid full price and seeing a few XDA members post successful unlocks. The latest excuse from an ATT Support Supervisor, is the $299 price is for ATT GO customers only. If you wish to buy it in an unlocked state, you must first tell the rep your intent prior to purchase, pay $399 and then the store mgr will override the unlock prevention. I found this out on Tuesday and called my ATT rep (worked with him for 9 years), and this was all news to him. Waiting for callback....
Just posting what I've learned in the last 13 days and an FYI for those wanting to use these devices on different networks.

Jeez the news about them locking cross carrier stuff sucks if it's true. I swear they are trying to kill this fricken device before it has a chance to succeed. From my understanding you can still use this through Bluetooth and get all the functionality right? (albeit through your phone and not the Gear S's own number)
I haven't seen any reviews of people using it without one. Starting to think maybe I should just cancel my order and hold off...
EDIT: To specify I mean functionality like respond to texts and email/ make calls and what not. Just through the phone its paired to.

Unfortunately, this situation isn't any different than Samsung's ridiculous decision to make these compatible with only their latest flagship devices. They are losing SO many sales due to this silly decision.
As to your inquiry...Yes, even without a SIM card, the BT connection will give you all the functionality of the companion Gear models. But, obviously, none of the standalone and remote features will be usable.
Overall, I've been very happy with this watch and amazed by it's features and hardware. However, the lack of quantity and quality apps is very frustrating. Again, another moronic decision by Samsung to provide an OS that is considered to be inferior to Wear, and is slated to be the OS for their cheapo line of phones.
Where is the logic in this??? Here they build a flagship watch and decide to finish it off with the "blue light special" of OS's!?!?!? WTF to that....
Samsung REALLY needs to stop copying and, ultimately, trying to be Apple. They really do have the ability to be a leader and pave their own path, but instead continue to follow. Truly a shame.

Bit of a mixed bag imo. They ARE trying to do their own thing and push their own brand/eco system. Ultimately that is what every brand wants to aspire to. When iOS launched the app store was ****. Same with android and windows phone (albeit THAT one is still ****). Personally I feel that they might have jumped the gun with this one by making it SO goddamn enclosed inside samsungs ecosystem as it is, but they are kinda trying to be a leader by branching off into their own ****. I also want to say when I first looked into it there were devs semi excited about Tizen. I'll have to go research the os again as it has been a couple months (originally looked into it when the gear s was announced) Regardless, I am definitely not saying your wrong the choices they made on this phone seem to be stopping A LOT of people from buying. IMO they should have made some exclusive features that only work properly with Samsung phones that were innovative (not something expected in the device) enough to make you WANT to go out and get a note 4/ s5 to pair with it.

My decision to return it may be based on this also. Please keep us updated.

After my 1.5hr visit to the ATT store... My gear is now finally unlocked. I did not have to pay any additional $$$, nor do the lengthy activation/deactivation process mentioned in an earlier post.
Being armed with the ATT Unlocking terms and conditions page and the FCC regs helped get this done. But, it's ridiculous that I would even have to go to this level.
If and/or when you go into the ATT store to make this purchase, be sure that you deal with one of the managers. The regular reps are clueless in this respect.
Okay so let me start by saying I really ain't all that tech savvy but I can learn something new and with the way our country is going to **** faster each day I don't have the $ to pay someone to do it .
Okay so I bought a galaxy s22 from someone on marketplace thinking hey it's a cool and better phone than the one I got plus Ive always liked the Galaxy series so I bought it for around. $300 . I figured that was an alright price .. I get home and turned on the phone and start to go through they set up process and then bam FRP locked needed the credentials of the last user account. I know there was a way to bypass the FRP just wasn't sure how to do it on the newer software Android 12. Like I said I'm not tech savvy so I'm not kept up the new phones that they've been coming out with so when I looked up this phone and seen that it's one of the most newest top of the line phones with the price range starting at or around a thousand bucks yeah that's a lot of money for one person to spend on the phone if you ask me very nice phone but I've never spend that kind of cash on a Phone. Ive Tried contacting the guy that sold it to me of course go figures he's gone ghost on me so I know something can't be right with it. So here we are a week later I figured it out and I got the phone unlocked. Now I'm stuck on whether I can even use the phone or not because when I changed over my sim to that IMEI number on the s22 it literally had 5G service for less than a minute and then pops up a message saying that I need to contact Verizon customer service and I had no service at all I got my SIM card fixed and everything back to my old phone with Metro but I'd still like to use this phone cuz I do have $300 in it that I don't want to lose is there a way I could possibly root the phone and be able to use it or what I have to just blatantly contact Verizon customer service to get them to release it to another carrier
1st hint that something was wrong should have been the price. $300 for a S22 usually is stolen or money is owed on the device. Not sure xda is the place for asking about FRP bypass as it's illigal
