[Q] Getting update on AT&T ? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, I am using the Vibrant on AT&T and obviously I won't receive an update OTA. I have it unlocked, and rooted, and the only tweaks I've used are the lockscreen additions, and the gps fix from j12(?) I believe. I've never used ODIN, and I'm not sure I really want to. Using recovery and flashing a zip is my preferred method of choice. Now, my question is, can I download the update from Samsungs support site? Is there a .zip I can flash for the update? Will updating it knock out the root, and the lockscreens I have installed? Is it worth it to update? I would really like to get this GPS working, even with the j12 update, it doesn't lock in hardly at all. Thanks in advance, sorry if this is beating a dead horse, there are a ton of threads, but nothing really specific about a stock update flashable zip

[Q] Rooting/CWM interfere with OTA Updates ?

Hey guys,
I am not new to the rooting or CWM scene but I like to double check these things with different phone models just in case as I do not want an expensive brick, especially with the S3 as I am looking to get one of these bad boys.
My question is, If I root/Install CWM will this cause issues with OTA updates or updates through Samsung Kies ? Or once an Update is installed would I simply need to re-root and install CWM again ?
I was taking a look at this thread and it bought my question to mind: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
I would for now like to stick to the Stock Roms and just want to be aware of the consequences of having Root/CWM and Updating my phone.
Cheers guys.
If you root, your device status will show as "Modified," and you won't get OTA updates.
Not a big deal as long as XDA is up and running, IMO. You'll get update here faster than you'll get them OTA anyway in nearly all cases.

Ahh right, what about CWM ? As you say, even if I cannot Update OTA or through Kies I can use Odin. I guess I just need to find out about installing any updates with CWM installed, Though I should imagine nothing will happen as the stock recovery would be put back and I would simply have to install CWM again but any further info would be great
Thanks !

If you use desktop Odin to flash, you'll lose the custom recovery and be reverted to stock recovery. You'll likely need to relfash the recovery again as well as root, unless the ROM you flash via Odin is pre-rooted.
Mobile Odin will allow you to flash the tar file and keep root, recovery, etc. 99% of the time, I use mobile Odin for stock ROMs these days.

New and Running T-Mobile on AT&T Note

Just a few questions. Running Tmobile stock rooted on the I717 is great but makes me a bit nervous as to what i can and can't do with this phone. I am running the UVLG3 with the T879UVLG3 baseband. and just got an update notification. so was wondering.
1. If i update will it brick the phone. tmobile update as that is what the phone id ID'd as.
2. If i do update and all goes well, i am sure root will be gone. Can i just odin recovery image and flash root through that?
3. if there a way to get the phone to not receive the updates on this rom?
4. Since i have the Tmobile modem, can i flash 4.2.2 ATT roms or any other ATT roms or will that cause issues?
Thanks for the help, just want to get rid of the annoying update reminders in the notification bar.

[Q] OTA after root

Hi everyone. Im real good with tech but i cant find anyone having asked...
I want to go buy the S4 and I will definitely root it (following the posted instructions on here) but before i do, will i be able to instal OTA updates after and if not, is there another way id be able to install updates? I used Voodoo rootkeeper on my tablet after rooting and the 1st ota went fine and kept root, the 2nd ota killed the root even while using Voodoo...
Please, any any all responses asap appreciated. I want to get the phone asap as i am tired of my rooted Bionic.
Thank all.

Just wait for a rooted stock ROM based on the OTA to be made by a dev. You never NEED to take an OTA.
Thanks but im not sure what you mean. I have no interest in loading custom roms nor over-screwing around with the phone. Do you mean wait for another root process or wait for a download for an ota update?
Thanks again
Im guessing you mean a rom will be released again after the ota is out with the ota integrated in it... That process makes me kind of nervous as i need my phone for work as well as personal and cant risk screwing up the phone or erasing data eta...
There is pretty much always someone that releases the stock ROM flashable in a custom recovery so you can have a rooted stock ROM. Look at the dev beanstownm106 ROM in the development section. It is basically the stock ROM rooted with some very minor tweaks, but flashable with a custom recovery like TWRP.
BUT...there is almost never anything you can't do with basically any ROM that you can do with the stock ROM. So you really don't need the stock ROM...some people just prefer it. For my old Thunderbolt, it was pretty well known that for a long time there was a custom ROM, very similar to the stock ROM, that was more stable than stock (SkyRaider Zeus).
Another BUT: if you need Good for work, prepare for a constant fight with root detection. And you will want to back up your data often. I have a BB for work that I leave untouched (its not mine).
One more thing...the Loki workaround has its advantages...the bootloader is still locked and untouched, so it would be pretty hard to brick the device because you can get back into download mode and use odin to flash back to factory.
Whats the loki workaround? Also, im dont want to be doing any kind of flashing... I just simply want to root the s4 (which i now have) and be able to run ota updates or if not, download the ota and install the update manually. And if i get an ota, if it will kill root, even if i run voodoo.
Please, if someone could, let us all know if ota wont run or will kill root on say the s3 or s4 and if downloadable updates are another option... without flashing anything or going to crazy.
Thanks again in advance.

[Q] Rooting Confusion on latest OTA Update

I apologize in advance if this has been answered or if I have inadvertently offended. I did watch the video and have developed OSes for 30 years. I also have searched all over this site and the web for resolution and am making no progress, so I'm asking the 'oracle'
Got an ATT S4 (I337) a week ago - it was running UCUAMDL. I rooted it using Motochopper and was happily using Titanium Pro etc. I get notified of OTA update. OTA update downloads (357MB) yet fails during install at 30% consistsently.
I figure it is unhappy with my root - I unrooted and cannot remember which way I did it - I seem to recall SuperSU I was using did not have the built-in 'unroot' support so I grabbed the stock image and used ODIN to flash it.I also may have manually uninstalled the 'normal' way the SU app - I suspect this may be my real problem.
After flashing stock ROM for UCUAMDL phone was no longer rooted, did not say custom etc, and took the OTA upgrade just fine. This was for UCUAMF3 which did add App 2 SD support - BTW this update used another 1G of storage compared to UCUAMDL, and I could not recover the 1G by moving apps either, making it virtually worthless as far as adding support for apps in SD, lol.
The problem is now I cannot seem to get the device rooted again. Motochopper fails when installing su.apk. I suspect I have screwed the pooch - what do I need to do to get this thing rooted again?
Is it typical for an OTA update to fail 'because' the device is rooted?
Any advice is much appreciated.

I do believe it's because of the latest OTA update. I know the OTA for Verizon patched our bootloader hack that we previously had and I think the same may have happened for AT&T. You might want to check through the AT&T forums section as you have an AT&T S4 and this is the Verizon section. Hope you find what your looking for!

I'd begin with posting in the forum applicable to your device. That being said, in about sure at&t's update was on par with ours

[Q] Rooted 4.3 back to OTA 4.3 via Odin

My phone use to be running stock rooted 4.2. I kept receiving messages about the OTA Update. I was going to take the update because I was having problems with my rooted 4.2, however, my phone would not take the OTA update. I think it was trying to tell me something lol. So i downloaded the official 4.3 file from the Samobile website. I used Odin to flash it to my phone. After doing this my phone has been a huge hunk crap. The thing that annoys me the most is that the vibration feature is not working. So read where people were talking about using Odin to reflash the 4.3 file. My only question is will this brick my phone? I haven't found any definitive posts reassuring me that my phone will work again after doing this. I just know that the 4.3 pretty much has everything on lock down and didn't want to brick my phone by trying to re-install it.
