What heartrate monitor with Liveview ? - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi forum.
Can you tell me what heartrate monitor SE use in the video-demo for their new LiveView device ??
He talk about heart rate, but say nothing about how that will work.
It would be really great if we could get that last thing working also in the X10, then i can throw my Garmin 405HR away for good...
I have found some different apps that use the Zephyr heartrate monitor, but i would like to get the one that i know for shure that SonyEricsson support...
- and i can´t find anything about if the Zephyr will work with the LiveView and X10.

Don't depend on a phone for your heart rate

I would not buy this without doing a little more research but i believe this may work with SportyPal:
http://www.polar.fi/en/products/accessories/Polar_WearLink_transmitter_with_Bluetooth
It is sportypal that liveview is showing so maybe there is more information on their website. I have that app installed and noticed two updates recently pertaining to the upcoming liveview device.

SportyPal Pro will integrate into LiveView and give heart rate stats via Zephyr's HxM.
It appears that while SportyPal is the first sports app for LiveView, others may follow. Info for the SE accessory implies that apps can be adapted to show data with LiveView. http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/accessories/overview/liveview
I'll buy one and review it on my blog. http://RunningDigital.com Looks like mid November.
Question is: Who's gonna hack it first?

[Q] any recommendation for a new phone??

Hey!
Anybody could recommend me an android smartphone??
Im a businessman at age 40,
No budget ...
Thanks.
Depends what you want out of a smartphone really.
Sony phones are pretty reliable. I'm using the Xperia Play and haven't had a single issue with it. The Sony Ericsson S is a nice phone though
However, Samsung seem to be the go-to manufacturer for quality so I'd probably say the Galaxy Nexus. Especially with the business thing as I'm sure it has MHL support so you can display PowerPoint slides through the HDMI jack to a projector.

[Q] Android TV Box webcam app?

Hi,
I really intersting in android tv box, and I found many types with its own features but unfortunately, there is no one had all these features.
The best one I found till now is ug007 and imito mx1&2 ( the MINIX NEO X5 is large) but all of them dont have built in camera and mic, and I know that there is other tv boxes have these 2 features but they lack powerful CPU and Bluetooth hardware.
So, I want to aske if there is an application can be installed on my android phone to use it as a webcam and mic for that android based TV Box (for skype and other chatting programs)? And if not, please can any one make it?
Yes, I know that there are ones like this application in google play market, but as I thought they are for Windows PC! Correct me if I am wrong.
And yes I also know that I can use external webcam, but actually I dont want to buy multiple one to test which is worke and not.
Thank you, but really it will be great to make a video call while you lying down on the bed in front of your tv

Hello I just ordered the minix neo x5. After my gbox midnight arrived (terrible box!) I plugged my 14 dollar Web Cam and mic I got from a local radioshack worked just fine. So i think its just trial and error. Look for a cam/mic set that is compatible with linux that will 90 percent of the time work.

The Minix X5 needs its ow forum. How do you system update it to 4.1.1, How do you get rid of the onscreen virtual keyboard etc...?
I'm waiting delivery of my Minix Neo X5 to see how it goes.
In the meantime I've dome some reading and found some info..
I haven't tested any of these apps yet though.
Null Keyboard app will get rid of the onscreen keyboard.
TV Box Launcher will help organize the screen into a more TV Box compatible view
And the link below "should" have some info on upgrading.

Got everything done. The 4.1.1 update made vast performance improvements. I'm going to search for null now. Thank you for your reply.

Hi,
i am looking for a compatible dvb-t with my sony xperia z tablet. I want a device which has coaxial connection because i am from spain and the TDT coverage here is too bad for a small antenna. Does anybody have a dvb for this tablet?
Thanks
I completely forgot about my Pinnacle PCTV Hybrid Pro Stick 330e ! Will look if they made an android app to work with.

I'm personally waiting on the new generation of the HD Homerun.
The new HDHR4 should be coming soon (they said mid 2013 at CES), it is a network dual tuner that connects to your wireless router via ethernet ... you can then access the tuners on many different devices.
The new version is said to have a native android app, hardware transcoding and DLNA.. I can't wait, i will be buying it on day one.

Looks interesting for ~100$ but it is for use at home.
When on the go a USB Stick is a better solution.

The idea of HD Homerun is very interesting but I do not know if i will pay 100$ when my usb stick for pc costed 15$. I want a usb stick to be used in my house because i do not have a television in my bedroom or in my kitchen where i have a plug to connect a dvb-t.
I have seen a conceptronic device (CTVDIGANG) but i do not see any review and in the specifications doesn't say if it is compatible with our tablet. Has anybody tried this one (or other similiar)?
The app recommend by babylonbwoy has horrible reviews. Have you successed connecting your Pinnacle PCTV Hybrid Pro Stick 330e to your android?

Well the biggest problem with that app is that it only supports Android 3.1, at least that's what it says in the description.
There is a TVMan app that seems to have good reviews but I don't know if you can use it with any dvb-t stick and I don't really know much about dvb-t sticks...
Edit:
There is also this app that seems positively reviewed for the most part:

In french translated playstore it looks like it says from 3.1 but not sure, and I don't find the change langage option in playstore new ui to check how is it in english. Last update is from july 9, again difficult to understand all that.
Not good at all for that price!

It states only for 3.1 in English, that's what I read it in the first time, hence my comment. I find it very odd that he has yet to update the app to at least 4.0 if it works in any way. The only positive review he had was when the guy tested it at his house, when he went to work (where he wanted to use it mainly) it didn't work because he had to forward ports (I think that's what he said) and even then it still didn't fully function. It seems really really sketchy to me.

No, he didn't delete it. He jacked the price up to $6.50 and changed the name of it so he could get rid of those negative reviews and sucker people into buying his app. It wouldn't surprise me of he has done this several times before. Here is his new link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.goprasoft.dvbt
I am considering reporting him, I don't like to make a fuss but it was obvious his app was **** and didn't work at all and noe he has changed it to get rid of the reviews so he can make more money on people who don't know any better.
Edit:
Now it has changed from the app only supporting "android 3.1" ,which there was no 3.1 only 3.0, to only supporting kernel version 3.10.

I wonder how people can try this in 15mn allowed by Google, he has not even a demo version, and if he change name of his app refund will be hard to get ! Not a good bet in long term, he will rip fews people maybe but negative review will come back sooner or later.
no problem for reporting him as he isn't honest.

DTV would be good but isn't having loads of wires defeating the object of have a small, lightweight portable unit? Out of curiosity I'd like to try with my USB DVB-T tuner but I don't think it's something I'd use all the time.
I set up a Mediaportal Server running from my main NAS which has a Dual DVB-S2 tuner. With a little messing I now have full live TV on the tablet anywhere. I got the 16GB wifi version so I use my phones 3G for it when I'm out and about. I also set up a web server running from the same backend that links into my Movie and TV show database. With Dolphin and the Flash plugin, you can get Live TV, Video, TV Shows and Music from your home server/NAS in a browser. The easiest way is to set up Mediaportal and MPextend, then just use aMPdroid on the tablet. It's not a 5 minute set up by no means but worth it in the end.

Oh yes I'll try at some point. Trying to find a driver that will run it will be the hard part. Maybe when the CM people and Ubuntu really start digging into these devices we may get a working one but up to now I've had no luck. I have a few old USB types to try so I'm not limited to Hauppauge.
I must repeat what I said before though.. With the tools we have these days, there's no point in having bits hanging out of any wireless enabled device. The benefits just aren't there. I can get any UK channel on my tablet nigh on anywhere that has 3G if I wish. I don't worry about DVB-T/S signal strength as it's fed from my home aerial or dish. And as a bonus I get my film and TV collection too. From what you guys have said, you have the hardware and the software for both PC and Android is free so you might as well put it to use until it can be tested direct in the tablet.... Or that's the way I see it
I'll let you know if I find anything out and we will see if we can get one in the tablet running.

Bluetooth Low Energy/Bluetooth Smart Heart Rate Monitors compatible with running apps

I understand that 4.3 will support Bluetooth 4.0/Bluetooth Low Energy, and more specifically Bluetooth Smart devices.
Does anyone have any experience with any Bluetooth heart rate monitor chest straps- even before 4.3- which were not supported by popular running apps?
To me, if a device has the Bluetooth logo, it meets Bluetooth protocol certifications and should work but these running apps say they only support a Polar or Zephyr (insert model #) here.
I didn't know if that is because that's all they test with or they're trying to hawk their own store products.
Personally, I prefer to invest in one heart rate chest strap that works with multiple apps if I decide I don't like one app at some point and how each of the running apps claim they only support 2 brands or models of something is pretty ridiculous.

Actually, Yes, they work -BUT- Android does not work with them.
Most phones do support BLE in their hardware, but android does NOT have the API-calls to access the hardware (until 4.3).
If you have a Bluetooth Smart device ( like your heart rate monitor ) and you try to pair it with any BLE capable device, it will work to a certain point, since it is Bluetooth after all. But bluetooth smart is a "simplified" version of bluetooth, with the intention to cut power usage so you can run on a coin cell battery for months, even years in some cases. The problem is that while they did cut the protocol down they also broke backward compatibility to a certain degree.
So communication from your Bluetooth smart device to your mobile phones bluetooth chip does work, but since "things" have changed, the part behind the bluetooth chip on your phone has to cope with the new differences. That does not happen in android before 4.3 . Some manufacturers like Samsung and HTC and Motorola (SHM) have done their own work (all three different approaches) to cope with the problem.
Me, as an APP developer, could go to all SHM companies and make my app work with their "workarounds" just to support a handfull of phones, coping with the quirks of those workarounds. -OR- I simply wait for google to implement BLE stack on Android in a newer version.
The reason it took Google till Android 4.3 to get BLE working was that google already did want to cleanup the Bluetooth code and waited till all is finished ( that's what I've read online ). I think that was the wrong approach. Since most Handset manufacturers do not update ROMs as fast, the Market share of android devices that truly work flawless with BLE will continue to be low for the next 2-3 years.
I am doing a masters thesis on bluetooth low energy and want to use it with android, although it should be clear that I need a Phone, I am still hessitating to buy a Nexus 4, although I am in need of a BLE compatible Phone.
On the other hand there are reports that the previous nexus phone, the galaxy nexus, has a BLE capable chip and meanwhile did get Android 4.3, but in that case (seemingly) the drivers for the BT-chip do not work with bluetooth smart / BLE. (A good reason to get angry)
To get back to your Heart Rate Monitor (HRM) straps, most probably the old ones did do some "own development" with older Bluetooth. The point is that BLE has a specific profile for HRM devices, so they will all be mix-n-match / compatible-to-eachother once the market for compatible apps, compatible phones and compatible straps is existent. Earlier HRM straps did implement their own data transmission protocol over the well known bluetooth serial protocol. That is the reason they are compatible with only one or two apps (or one app with a couple of straps).
I have a Nexus 4 and just received a Polar H7 HRM which is a Bluetooth Smart device. Loaded 4.3 up, Android recognizes it, no apps do.

Update:
A nerd at Polar finally alleviated my worries.

We do not foresee any changes made to the H7 as it uses BTLE standard protocol. * It will be compatible with 4.3. *We have seen the recent announcement regarding 4.3 and are working hard to see what it means for Polar Beat application. It is great that so many people would like the Beat app to be available on Android phones. Us too! Stay tuned for further news.

For me that means I'll keep the h7 I bought. To hell with apps that won't support it in favor of their own branded HRMs. I want freedom to switch $5 apps versus buying $50 HRMs for each.

I just purchased the Wahoo Blue HR strap to test with Runtastic app and an S3 with Android 4.3 (Cyanogen). I will test tomorrow and if it doesn't work I will return and then try the Polar H7 and let you all know what the results are.
Runtastic recently updated their app to include support for Android 4.3 with Bluetooth 4.0.

That'll be excellent. Can't wait for the status update. My wife also uses an S3, so it will be a definite purchase for me if you confirm that all is good.
I couldn't wait, so I purchased the Wahoo heart rate monitor. I should've done my research but I had to find out the hard way that because there's no support for BT LE in Runkeeper and Endomondo, they didn't work at all. I signed up for the Wahoo beta android app and gave that a go. That was fine. Didn't try Runtastic though.
Luckily I had a coworker who was after one for his iPhone so I sold him mine on the same day for the same price I had purchased it.
I ended up getting the Polar Wearlink Bluetooth (not the Wearlink+ H7 with Bluetooth 4.0 version- because it is pointless if your app of choice doesn't support it). I wouldn't be surprised if Runkeeper announced support soon, but they've been talking about it for over a year now. So it will come eventually, but the time is not now.
I used a Nexus 5 for testing, but I'm sure I would've gotten the same result with a Nexus 4.

Runtastic does support Smart HRMs. I use it with my Polar H7 and Nexus 4 with no issues. I think that's about the only full featured fitness app out there on android that supports it. The other big apps (such as Runkeeper) are just MIA, as far as I know there is no ETA for support, no beta, nothing. If Runkeeper supported smart BT, I would buy it, simply because it is the only app supported by my employer sponsored fitness portal.

It is now 6 months that people request BTLE supports with Runkeeper. Since Android 4.3 has been announced with BTLE supportt.
As today the support still answer: "it's in the pipeline!"
How can such a big app can have this lack of development and not support BTLE yet? Is this a lack of knowledge from developpers? Licensing? Money? A little bit of everything?

Unfortunately, using a heart rate monitor with Runtastic is pointless for me since the app does not consider your heart rate in it's calorie burning calculation. This came direct from Runtastic support. The heart rate is only tracked for informational purposes but not used by the app.
I'm trying to find a workout app that does the following:
1) Syncs with Myfitnesspal or Fitbit
2) Is compatible with BLE heart rate monitors
3) Uses heart rate to calculate calories burned
4) Works with the Sony Smartwatch
Runtastic does 1, 2 and 4 but as I said doesn't to 3.
I know Digifit/iCardio does 1, 2 and 3 but not 4.
What about the Wahoo app? Does anyone know if it works with the Sony Smartwatch and/or uses your heart rate in its calculations?

Guys, just use iCardio. I've been using it for the past week and it works with the Polar H7 HRM.
Forget all the others like Runkeeper and Endomondo who can't keep up with the times. You have other options so use them. I was using Endomondo but I've moved on and have no regrets.
I've been working on a heart rare monitor app. Currently, the amount of features is slim, but this will change soon.. if you participate in testing, it would help me very much.

This looks like a good start... I am looking for an app that will capture the BTLE or ANT+ output from my new Mio Link when inthe gym. I could use my Forerunner 220 and ANT+, but then I get a cadence track from the internal sensor that I dont want and cant turn off. This then screws up the pace/distance stats.
I have tried the Wahoo app and BTLE, but I seem to get loads of spikes.
Does your app log the heart rate, and is there then a way to extract it for upload somewhere else - ideally in .FIT or .tcx format ??
Any other apps out there that do this ?

Gear Fit 2: possible with <1.5GB RAM?

Hi to all, I'm interesting in purchasing of GF2. Is it already possible to use it with a (Android) smartphone with less than 1.5 GB of RAM? I've a Moto G LTE (XT1039, peregrin) with Cyano 13 flashed.
It will ever be possible using the GF2? From the play store I can download the Samsung Gear app, but not having a GF2, I can't test the pairing
Actually I use a MotoACTV, during my trainings, but as You know, the portal is now unusable and I don't think Motorola wants to support it anymore.
Thanks to all and sorry if it's the wrong 3d
Yes, but as I know not for Samsung devices. There is some app manager for devices with 1GB in Google Play store.
I do not remember name. When I buy my Fit 2 the seller talks about that. He uses his Fit 2 with LG 1GB.
Just look for it in GP.
Wow, what a great news! Thanks a lot

Hi,
Please see my thread for a solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gear-fit/help/gear-fit-2-moto-g-2014-gear-manager-t3430292
Interesting solution I'm still thinking about which new sportwatch to buy but now this is a good choice too!
I was able to disable the minimum RAM requirement check in the Samsung Gear application, by de-compiling it, modifying the rules.xml file (adding hostMinMemory=”0″ syntax), re-compiling and re-signing it. I also had to re-sign dependant apps - Gear Fit2 Plugin and Samsung Accessory Service. The modified Samsung Gear app was tested on Sony Xperia T3 (Stock Android 4.4.4, 1GB RAM, phone NOT rooted) but I believe it should be working on other similar phones too.
The instructions and the modified app (no root required for use) is available for download on my blog, please follow the link below

If it works on your phone, please do not forget to post model of your phone and version of Android in the comments on the blog, to help other members of the community.
