T-Mobile UK internet [Q] - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, when I was on 1.6 my internet connection was 3G above the two arrows in the upper right corner. Now that I have went to 2.1 I am using "H" which I am guessing is HSUPA. Depending on my signal strength it goes from between H - 3G - G.
Not really an issue just wondering why I now have use of HSUPA on 2.1 when I only went up to 3G on 1.6?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Flashing HSPA+ Radio?

Does anyone think or know why or why not we can flash the radio from the G2 to work on the vibrant to get the HSPA+ network connections. or is this a hardware thing? im not a dev but wouldnt mind learing so i can contribute too.
it is a hardware thing. the vibrant can get hspa connections but not hspa+. hspa maxes out at 7.2Mbits/s though, so that's still pretty good.
How would we be able to get hspa working? I think my touch pro2 was on hspa. I always had the H logo in the tool bar.

This same question has passed my mind as well. More often then not I notice in the phone status that the signal is UTMS, on the rare occasion is may say hsdpa. So i wouldn't be surprised if in the radio settings, utms is the preferred signal type.
we already have hspa. hspa+ is what the g2 has. hspa is just 3g...
From past experience with all of my previous smart phones the radio firmware upgrade is hardware specific.....So a Samsung radio will not work with HTC(G2) firmware.
for t-mobile, when you're on HSPA or UMTS, it just uses the 3G logo on the notification bar.
you can check at settings->about phone -> status to see what mobile network type you are on. mine says HSDPA right now, but when i'm at home, it usually says HSPA.
when they update your cell site with the HSPA+ cell, you will probably get an increase in speed because they will probably upgrade the internet connection to the cell to support HSPA+ speeds which means you get up to 7.2Mb/s. I think someone said earlier that most 3G sites only have two T1 lines as the backhaul, meaning you will probably get max 1.5Mb/s in a speed test.
Hardware thing. MIP
HSPA 7.2 is good enough for me and when HSPA+ rolls out in my area I ought to get closer to that theoretical speed more often. I've seen speeds like 5.9 Mbps on Speedtest.net when I'm near a regular HSPA tower.
I do wish we could mod the icon to display an "H" on HSPA connections like the G2 (G2 shows an "H" for regular HSPA as well as HSPA+). I remember running Klick Hero on my G1 almost a year ago, and getting the H icon from time to time on that old thing!
You can confirm you are on HSPA with the Mobile Signal Widget.
Itll show h on 2.2

The reason you cannot flash the G2 radio to get HSPA+ on the Vibrant is because the Vibrant DOES NOT HAVE A HSPA+ RADIO. Flashing the radio/modem software onto the Vibrant will not help and will probably damage your handset.
Adding software to the phone to use hardware it does not physically have is pointless.

You don't do anything to "get HSPA working", because it already works. If the cell site your handset is connected to is HSPA, then that is what your handset will connect with.
Just because the icon in the notification bar says "3G", this does not mean that you are not connected to a HS(D)PA network. Check "Settings > About phone > Status > Mobile network type" to check which type of network you are connected to. Mine currently says "HSDPA", but I have a "3G" icon in the notification bar.
Does anybody think its possible to take a baseband chip from the Epic 4g, and solder it into the Vibrant to get it to work with Sprint's WiMax network?
Only way I see that happening is of you mod the phones hardware then mod the software drivers to make it work...it can be done but is a huge pain in the butt....I use to mod our sat phones and radios over in iraq to bump signal for direct calls...the hardware side is easy little patch work needed....software side to make it work is where the work would really come in...mod for the kern...then drivers...then fixing all dependency issues for the radio...then last part is the battery issue...you would have to find a radio that wouldn't eat like it was at an all you can eat dollar dinner....but if you are into hardcore mods keep everyone posted...lol

Not without a ton of programing knowledge.
i would venture to guess no, because more than the baseband chip would probably need to be included. you'd probably some of the receivers as well. At the very least, the chip marked wimax power amplifier.. http://www.chipworks.com/samsung-epic-4g.aspx
why would you want to do that anyways? the phone isn't designed to support two baseband chips so you probably wouldn't have any way of having both tmo and wimax. might as well just buy both phones

The shipped ROM on the Vibrant does not display an "H" for HS(D)PA connections ever. It will only show "G" for GPRS, "E" for EDGE and "3G" for UMTS, HSDPA and HSPA.
Try phono which shows real time signal. I was able to find the right spot for signal at work.

Using X10i in Canada

I've read somewhere before that using X10i in Canada will screw something up with the 3g data connection? Is this true?
I haven't had much problems with 3G since the nordic 2.1 firmware i've been using when it came out. Everything is still fine with freex10 2.2.1 beta2 +hotfix.
The only thing is that 3G symbol at the top becomes an H from time to time. I also noticed the 3g data became a little slower than before; but i am not sure about this.

Rogers in Canada, like AT&T in the USA, use a different frequency to transmit their 3G network. X10i, the "i" stands for international. X10a, the "a" stands for America. You will be use either version on the EDGE (2G) network anywhere in the world as they are both quad band GSM phones. You can find more info HERE.
oh snap... is there a guide on how to go from freex10 2.2.1 beta2 to some version of x10a?
Nvm, got it.
Just flashed it with the original x10a 2.1 then redid everything again.

H is for HSDPA (3.5G)

H icon instead of 3G (in cyanogenmod)

I have a Optimus One T (P509) with 3G data plan. While I was using the stock ROM, the notification bar showed a 3G icon most of the time (sometimes G or E if the connection was bad). After I flashed cyanogenmod, though, it only shows H. I checked the download speed - it was 370kbps.
It's not exactly a problem; I was just wondering why it happens. Doesn't cyanogenmod have an icon for 3G?
3G is UTMS and H is HSDPA.
HSPDA is faster than UTMS.

But while your phone is idle, the H icon is replaced by 3G,otherwise it will consume loads of battery in idle mode.

It actually depends on your operator and your area. Sometimes during idle they still use HSDPA, as maybe they dont have UTMS on that area(I noticed one operator does this when overseas).
Thuis is my experience:
3G icon when on 3g, H icon when also actually using data!

Mine seems to alternate, I believe if I move 1 foot to the right or 1 inch to the left the signal switches, at this moment I'm showing 3G but if I roll over it might show H

you talk sooo funnny.... lol
3g is the legacy circuit switching call. Speed limited to 384 kbps.. Hsdpa is "3.5G". Has higher speeds. This is packet switching.
Both use wcdma as the underlying technology.. Hope this answers your questions

I dont case about this
According to Cyanogenmod wiki page, HSPDA is the fastest mode and 3G is a bit slower than HSPDA. In stock ROM, always '3G' is shown irrespective of the real network. So even if you're browsing in HSPDA network, it will show as 3G. In Cyanogenmod, this has been changed.
Read here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/FAQ#Technical
Since you're always getting H, it means that your network speeds are great. Be happy

Radio Issues

I live in a low signal area but I could pick up 1 bar signal in certain locations.
I had to change my USB board due to broken USB but I got a version 2.2 as to a rev 2.3 .
The board is obviously the current issue but when I was out the other day near my network providers high signal zone I got a signal. It seems my phone is looking for the strongest signal and locking on even although I can use them. For example:
I am T-Mobile UK which also uses the Orange network for signal. When I am home the phone reads only two networks which get signal in my area. Vodaphone and O2-UK.
Would a different radio driver work perhaps?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Xperia Ray, Small H and G above signal strength

at gb, when I was roaming a small H, G, or 3G appeared above my signal strength, which was an indication of my Internet speed.
But since I updated to ICS, those are gone, and the only thing I see is a small R(of roaming I guess)
is there any way to get the H and those back?
I saw screenshots of devices on the same rom where they where there, so it must be possible right?
thanks in advance.
