Im thinking of buying my brother a X10 but i have a few questions to ask first. I currently have a HTC desire so i prefer android phones now.
1. I see that its possible to root the phone but there does not seem to be much ROMS available. Is there any reason for this?
2. The main reason i wanted to root and change ROM was to install A2SD but the X10 has much higher internal memory at 1GB. But can i still install A2SD+?
3. I see that there are vanilla 2.2 Roms but they have a few bugs. So is there a vanilla 2.1 Rom that is stable and everything works?
Thanks
1. The bootloader aint cracked yet, so the dev's are restricted with what they can cook..
2. Yes.. I believe you can, although I haven't bothered.. not needed it myself.
3. stock SE 2.1 with tweaks (JIT, junk removed, other minor changes) runs really well..
You should buy x10 immediatly.
Nice ROMs, stability, good devs etc.

Thanks, very informative reply.
In regards to the internal memory, how much space does the phone have for apps? The desire only has 150mb so that's why you need to a2sd.
The stock SE 2.1 Rom with all the junk removed sounds exactly what I'm looking for, have you got a link to it?
Finally, is it correct you there are 2.2 Roms but only the camcorder is not working? Or have they got other issues too?
Thanks
the best 2.1 rom is this, it's the one i have now
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913610
really fast and stable, everything works 100%, you get over 400mb of internal storage with this rom.
the 2.2 roms mostly everything works but camcorder and a couple small things. but i'm still on 2.1, it works great, i won't switch until they've got a 2.2 rom with fully working camcorder.
hope this helped!
if u want free flashing,
i would recommend google phones or the galaxy S from samsung
x10 has the bootloader locked + encrypted so it's hard for the devs here to cook roms without bugs.
Hi, I want to see how Mediascape runs in Android 2.3.3, but I wanted to know if it it's possible to get the app from an X10 so I can install it on my X10 running 2.3.3. In case I can, do I need to root?
Thanks in advance.
I think that's not possible. is between 2.1 and 2.3.3 to the consuming
Wolfbreak say this on his WB-XPERIA TW Gingerbread Thread.

Sry but SE dumped Mediascape in 2.1 becouse it needs to much Time for OS Upgrades becouse porting Mediascape to newer Android Versions is critical and a longtime Process even for SE so i think theres no way to get it in 2.3, sorry!

Anyone go ideas
I also want mediascpe on 2.3.3.
Help us out.
Is there a way to change 2.1 (Eclair) to 2.3 (GingerBread) FIRMWARE ONLY,
what i mean the whole environment is the same as stock...
-same theme
-same apps
-etc...
just change the firmware version ONLY (nothing more) to 2.3...
-----------------------------------------------------------------
another question is that i backed up stock apps on such as calculator, note, stopwatch, radio, backup and restore, etc... on 2.1 x10 mini then i tried to use miniCM7 2.3.5 GingerBread, why is it i cannot install those backed up applications?
All the drivers are different for gingerbread thats why there are lots of custom ROMs. Gingerbread and Eclair handle system apps in different ways so thats possibly why you cant restore them.
Its not a simple thing to just swap eclair for gingerbread. Microsoft windows for example contains gigabytes of drivers for all the possible hardware configurations, the kernal is relatively small in comparison. Its the same with Android, if all the possible drivers were included you could end up with gigabytes of space being used up on the phone when in reality only 10mb is needed for a particular model.
I downloaded the android dev kit for windows recently, its huge! All that for an OS thats less than 80mb...

Ok...I am really REALLY new to all of this. IF you put a custom Honeycomb ROM (CM7 is Honeycomb right?) onto a tablet, will it then run apps that are designed for Honeycomb tablets?

Cm7 is 2.3.7 gingerbread and apps working anyway.
Most.

The ROM is the same android OS but customized regardless of the android version (honeycomb, gingerbread, etc).
Different ROMs could have the same Android version. Major ROMs like CM are updated by their Developers when a new android OS is available.
Apps work mostly on any ROM, unless a certain app doesn't work on a certain Android OS version.
I hope I could answer your question.

Sort of....I guess I should break it down a little. There is a Words With Friends App that is made specifically for Honeycomb and because of that I can't even put it on my tablet which runs Froyo (parsing error). If I install a custom ROM or ported ROM like CM9, will it allow me to be able to install it?
CM9 is Ice Cream Sandwich I believe... It might run your app.
Go to the app page on the market and see if anyone is complaining about it not working with ICS... If not, you're good to go.
CM8 was supposed to be Honeycomb, but didn't happen because Google didn't release the source code for Honeycomb. If you find a Honeycomb ROM specific for your tablet, then that answers your question. Otherwise you might have to wait till an ICS ROM is developed for your tablet.
Probably a noob question so I apologize beforehand
Is there any way to install an .apk that is meant for ICS OS on my Gingerbread device?
Normally, Android apps run on any Android version (there is no difference in the apk files). The reason an app only runs on ICS and not on GB is that the dev is using APIs that are only available on ICS.
You might be able to trick your phone into installing the app by editing the apk, but it will probably crash at one point or another.
You best bet is to contact the developer, or search an alternative app.
