With 2.1 not having a real good auto brightness setting compared to 1.6 whats your brightness setting? Would you rather have Auto Brightness on? or where on the meter do you have it set?
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Personally I find the brightness toggles from the stock widget provided to be rather useless, either too dark or too bright.
I usually use slightly less than half brightness on the slider, good visability and looks at the same time.
If I want to configure for themes or just have a nice bright screen to show off wallpapers I use a little more than half. Any higher and it gets glaring imo.
I use manual setting, mine is 50% and the battery last very long, hehe

No. I find 100% in 2.1 to be equal to that of 50% in 1.6, and given the battery life increase that comes with 2.1 haven't noticed a drain.
I keep it on 0% and change it to more with a widget when I'm using it out doors. 0% works fine indoors and I'm getting about 2 or 3 days worth in battery life, thats using mp3 during the day and audiobooks when trying to sleep with about 30min per day of internet browsing.
Mine is set to around 75% or so. Battery life is so much better in 2.1 I coulod probably have it at max and still get better battery life than 1.6.
I like it at about 50%, little dull outside not enough to bother changing.

Hey xda,
I'm curious as to what you all use for your screen brightness settings. For the duration of my ownership of the fascinate, I've kept it at the lowest possible setting. I'm wondering if that's really doing that much for my battery life. I'm contemplating turning it to auto.
What do you guys think about screen brightness as it compares to battery life. Is the screen not lit with LEDs? If I'm not mistaken, a typical LED could run for like 40 years on a single AA battery.
I am on auto with GPS, Data, and sync on all time. I use it pretty heavily I would say. Nothing like hours at a time but 15 min here, 5 there, 10 there. I get about 16 - 18 hours out of my phone.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if I should keep GPS on too. I mean as long as I'm not actively using it for navigation, is it really going to be draining any battery life?

Adryn has stated "Keep GPS off" for better battery life. Idk if you are using SC tho, but this would apply to any.

Thanks for the response. So what you're saying is you leave the brightness high, but you know that's detrimental to your battery life?

Yep...but i'll sacrifice in favor of beauty for a loss of thirty min. Of use
how long an LED runs on a AA depends, some might run a day (not 40 years), others less than an hour, and the most powerful ones need multiple D batteries just to turn on. these phones have a SAMOLED screen, broken down into: Super Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode. the important part here is the organic. instead of having a single, or a few LEDs behind or around the screen, the screen uses an organic (not organic like the meaningless buzzword, but no ****, it's organic cells) compound for each colour. these organic compounds produce light when electrically charged, and only when a colour is displayed. this gives you the possibility of a truly infinite contrast ratio, and brilliantly rich colours.
I leave mine on auto.
Was using the lowest setting, but I'm now using auto setting.
I normally have it at its lowest setting unless I'm outside. I used to have it on auto, but it didn't work exactly like I wanted. Now that the notification bar brightness feature was added with Froyo, I just use that to adjust the brightness without having to open up settings.
As long as you don't have the screen on for minutes at a time, the difference between automatic brightness and the lowest setting is minimal. I switch to automatic for days that I tend to be outside a lot, but I normally leave it on the lowest setting because I occasionally go on binges where I read the news when I'm bored. If I don't do that too much and don't have any phone calls that last over 15+ minutes then I get about 48 hours of battery life on JT's AOSP ROM.

What gives you better battery life - keeping it on Auto or setting it manually to a lower setting?
People say auto brightness affects battery life because it utilizes CPU power. I call shenanigans on that though because it will use very little CPU power... I vote AUTO.. cause if your out in the sun and your settings are set to low... You are just going to tweak them to accommodate your needs.

I have mine set on auto, but it doesnt dim or brighten up.
Bet it does! just when it needs to brighten and dim, you never notice. I thought the same thing until I played with it for a while thenI noticed it working.
auto eats more power, but it does what it needs to.

It uses more power to make the display brighter. Think of it like those 3-way light bulbs. The lowest setting is like 25 watts, the middle 50 watts and the brightest is 100 watts.
There is a widget that lets you change it manually between 33, 67, and 100% brightness with the touch of the button. I have that on my 2nd screen (along with WiFi, GPS, etc) and keep it at 33% most of the day every day.
I use auto due to ease and I easily get through the day without charging. I do use manual if I am in a dark room b/c auto just doesn't seem to dim the screen enough.
I like the 3 setting Brightness widget also. I like to set it where I prefer, didn't really care for auto. Don't know about battery savings with either one.
Is this a stock brightness widget or do I have to get it in the market?
I keep mine low...
24 hours later... 55% battery.
I use battery level its a small widget to change every 25% its great my battery is amazing Im at 58% after 12 hrs using 25% the brightness level and of course WiFi always on and turn in mobile network when I leave the house which saves me SO much battery
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I always run mine at 100% brightness. I don't care about battery life. I prefer a bright screen.
Using a widget is probably no bad but I just auto , come on the phone was made with the sensor for it and it doesn't use much battery unless you have it a t 40% or lower all day long and struggle in the sun. I been using in auto since the iPhone I changed it for Android but i went back to auto cause it waste time just to change the setting everytime and annoying too

It's a stock HTC Widget, but they also put powerpanel in there. I just think the HTC widgets look nicer.
I wished the auto brightness function had user-defined options. I agree with it being way too bright at night.
I have been using the 3 setting brightness widget/button. Usually always leave it on medium till I'm at home with the wall charger then I use max brightness.

The best widget I've tried is Brightness Level made by Curvefish. You get easy access to preset levels, a slider to adjust brightness to any level, and enable or disable auto brightness.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
it would be nice to find a widget that sets a daytime and nighttime level. i use tasker but i think it's just too big of a program for just this one little thing.
I shut off my auto brightness off yesterday after a few hours to see if it made a difference and set my level to 40%. I don't know if it was a fluke or not but after 13 hours when I plugged my phone back in to go to bed, I was at 63%.
That is a huge difference from what I have been seeing. I am going to see how it turns out today with the same setting but I must say it is looking pretty good so far. After 2.5 hours with some texts, a little web surfing, some theme changes and emails and I am at 93%.
I will post back my results later tonight. I am also using power control plus which has a brighness widget that you can set to a percentage for each hit. So in case I need fill brighness, one click and I am there. Another click I am back to 40%.
Hey guys

Im getting 115-142mA with the phone idling with the display on with wifi on.
With data enabled/wifi off it jumps to over 200mA.
Having Bluetooth on but not paired didnt seem to make any difference in battery consumption.
Having GPS on but not in use also showed no increase in battery consumption. However, having gps in use (had navigation running in background) caused the battery to spike to almost 400 before settling around the low/mid 200mA range.

If I turn data/wifi/gps off and put brightness to somewhere between 30-40% approximately it sits between 91-98mA. My original posts were made with auto brightness on.
And its no bother. Takes seconds to adjust settings and I just left the phone sit for 5mins with display on.

Well..with the above settings I have ~150mA,so the difference is 50mA,not bad (hope devs will get rid of this difference )
The screen dims and changes brightness by itself so much I am contemplating just turning it up and leaving it.
Any thoughts to this, and does it drain your battery super quick?
Seems a waste of the SLCD 2 to have so dim and changing brightness all the time

If you plan on disabling brightness just keep in mind if your an outdoors user or indoors user, the lighting around you will play a key roll on what levels of lighting you decide to have.
Personally I have the Automatic setting enabled, but I keep a widget (via widgetsoid) handy so I can disable it when I want and how I want on the fly.

I know what you mean, I tried doing the same because I got sick of the brightness changes all the time, but after a couple of days having to adjust it myself or compromise on batt life, I decided to go back to Automatic settings... In my life I go to much outdoors as I can spend hole days indoors its what ever happens, happens so I decided to stick with the annoying setting other than being annoyed by having to set it myself.
Screen brightness is the biggest contributor to battery drain. I keep mine as dim as possible at all times. I've unfortunately become quite OCD about it.

I'm the same way. But the problem I have with this phone is that the more dimmer I make it, the more uglier the whites become (which I have become OCD about).
So I have double OCD working against each other and my brain is going to explode. That is all. Carry on.
Ok; the phone has been out a few months. Anyone's opinions changed?
I generally keep screen auto-brightness OFF, and set it to about 60% to 70% brightness static. When plugged into power to watch video, I go to 100%.

+1 for Auto and a widget. Most of my use happens at the extremes - OFF or 100%, so this provides easy switching.
I keep mine down around 10%, and only use autobrightness when outdoors
Seems a shame to keep this beautiful screen below 70% brightness. What is the best setting for brightness that won't kill my battery? Thanks.
Leave mine at 80 and make it a full day
30% and auto brightness. Greenify with firewall blocking most connections. CF lumen changes tones in the pm. Think im just lucky my eyes are more light sensitive so I can keep brightness settings low.

Screen is great in full sunlight. You get max brightness if you turn off auto brightness and push the slider all the way to 100%. Guarantee you won't have an issue with that.
I stay at 40% no auto brightness. Usually not out in the sun often but when I'm I switch to 100%

I do sometimes miss the AMOLED screen from the S4 only for the Blacks though.
The bottom line though is this QHD screen is amazing. Even though it's the first of its kind for a phone, I think they did a great job. The detail you can see on photos and watching videos is just insane.

I'm coming from an HTC One M8 and idk, I'm just not sold on the display yet. Maybe just my eyes. I do find that auto brightness is always too dark for me inside.
+1 for LUX app, I have it in every phone and tablet in my stable, but...
I find the LUX auto setting to be much too aggressive in dimming the screen under most conditions. I often have to force it to add 30% or more to the auto.
Agree with post above about missing the inky blacks of an AMOLED screen. The blacks are the only complaint I would make about this beautiful display.
I like it @ 70 no Auto, with color correction on and the circle covering just a smidge south of center on the camera icon on the screen that you use to calibrate the color correction.
50% and auto.
For me, anything less that 80% looks awful. Yes, downright awful! At 80%, it looks great. On my G2 it was 70%, but the G3 needs more to look clean and bright. I'd rather have to charge the phone 20 times a day than suffer with dimly lit screens. Sometimes people spend more time trying to figure out how to save battery life than they do using their phones. Enjoy your phones people, and stop suffering over battery life!
That said, I do get a tiny blip of dimming when switching apps or screens. At a solid 80% it seems to auto dim a tiny bit during normal use. I think this is some sort of throttling function that is normal with the G3, but it is minor annoying. Some people had done some overrides to this but I can live with it.
