.nomedia works REALLY weird - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I made a .nomedia so my scanner doesn't pick some of my pics up...
But it takes 10 seconds to load EACH picture?
is this because media scanner isn't caching those pictures?
Is there a fix? An alternative?

i've noticed the same thing about the .nomedia folder. i do think you are correct, its been my assumption as well, that this folder being excluded from the media scanning causes it to lag on displaying pics. guess thats the price we pay for having files we don't want popping up in the gallery.

Google Plus sharing pictures from phone shared wrong picture...?

So I just installed google+ on the phone and tried sharing a specific picture from my phone....
The picture posted ended up being a freaking screen shot of an ESPN bookmark!! WTF?
Has anybody had this problem or is it just a freak accident? I am a lil scared of using it now as there are some crazy ass photos on my phone and I definitely do not want to even accidentally post them.
Maybe I can just put them in a .file but isn't that where they found the ESPN bookmark?

Delete your /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails folder so that it rebuilds. You should be able to verify this is the problem by opening gallery and noticing that the thumbnail of the image you *wanted* to post opens the image of what was actually sent. After you delete that folder and open gallery things should be corrected. It just sounds like the thumbnails may have gotten mixed up.
If that wasn't the problem, we'll go from there.

Ah... this may have solved the problem. Should have thought about that first. It's been awhile since i cleared the thumbnails.
K.... Another issue.
I turned on instant upload to upload all my pics to Picasa.
It ONLY found my fxcamera folder.... I have like 5 folders with pics in them. Anybody know how Google+ instant upload scans the SD card for pics?
EDIT: Solved...
Google+ instant upload looks like it scans in order of folders and uploads the first folder it finds with pics in it... (First time the first folder it found with pics was FXcamera Folder) for most people it would be DCIM. For now I moved all my pics into that folder (DCIM) but I will take them all out once it's done uploading (4G kills it!)
Then from there on it will instant upload anything that goes into DCIM...
just a FYI

[Q] gallery not showing some pictures

is there a known gallery bug in this phone?
I have a folder called frame in the root of my sd card. it has some pictures that I want to use with the htc photo album or photo grid widgets. gallery wont see those pictures. there isn't any .nomedia file. i've copy/pasted those files to a different folder that was showing in gallery. those pictures don't show as being in the folder! the pictures were recognized in my OG EVo and on my wife's Xoom. i've force stopped the gallery app, cleared its data, restarted the phone, shut down the phone. don't know what to do, no matter what i've tried, those pictures don't show in gallery!?!
any light you can shed on this would be appreciated!

i think you've done a good job of covering all the basic troubleshooting steps.
the only other idea i have, which is a bit more complex, is to watch logcat for output from the gallery app. once you wipe its data, when it loads up,it should show some output as it scans for files. maybe somewhere in the output it will give a hint as to why it detects some files and why it ignores your files.
unfortunately, i haven't heard anything about this yet and maybe there is a bug. maybe logcat and debug output from the gallery app will shed more light on the issue.
hope that helps! keep us updated.
well it turns out after enough rebooting it does update. i think it may be that whole new idea of fast booting, that it doesn't clear memory and reload the app from scratch. even though I had force stopped the app. now everything is showing, just not right away.

[Q] Is there anyway to limit the Gallery?

Is there a way to tell the Gallery to just scan a certain folder where all my pics are and not the pics that came with other apps like Skyscape? This also applies to the Music Player but there are other Music apps that can already do that...
The .nomedia technique excludes certain folders from media scanning but does it mess up the apps that use those pics? Like if I put a .nomedia file in the folder where the downloaded files of a Skyscape is so that it wont show in the Gallery when I look at pics, does it also prevent Skyscape from accessing its own files?
You could try to find a Gallery modification that supports excluding folders (If your one doesn't). But I strongly advice QuickPic.

[Q] .nomedia or dot doesn't work in the gallery

Does anyone a the solution to the problem where the gallery just indexes nearly everything it finds? i've placed .nomedia files in folders, i've tried putting a dot in front of the folders (which did make them 'invisible' for file explorer) which also worked for a couple of days, but suddenly gallery started to index even these .name folders.
Does anyone know how to fix this? it's pretty stupid that there is no include/exclude folder option or anything.
Use quickpic and disable the gallery. That's what I did.
You can also install audio manager and do it that way.
Theres only one way that works.

This is only for music and the indexing of every single bit of album art that the Gallery Pics up, but in most casesthat's the biggest annoyance:
I have tried Gallery Replacements like QuickPic, and they are decent, but I want things to work the way I want them, not to just replace them with an alternative. Hers the only way that I know that works:
You need to have only one Album Cover picture per folder (assuming all your music is in folders) Name it albumart.jpg all lowercase; AlbumArt.jpg will not work (he says after naming DOZENS that way, LOL! It is time consuming, but only needs to be done once, preferably on the PC, where a major file cleanup/renaming operation goes a little faster.
Then just use Cover Art Downloader from the market for all future adds to your music files (it creates the correct filename) and you are set.
This is a known ICS bug. It has been submitted to google for fixing. Sorry I don't have the link to the bug report but a google search should work to find it.
It happens when the media scanner scans a folder prior to a .nomedia file being created. Once media scanner determines there is media in a folder it will forever ignore the .nomedia file.
A fix is to add the .nomedia files to whatever folders you don't want scanned then clear data for the media scanner (and possibly gallery too, although I think a reboot will remove the extra thumbnails).
I'm not sure how your media scanner is scanning your .folders, but whatever. Hopefully clearing media storage will fix that too.
I use the .nomedia trick & it seems to work. Maybe I placed them before the media scanner indexed them?
For example the app Bookworm makes thumbs of all the book covers - and I have 250 - and use this trick to stop them from showing up.
The .nomedia file has to be the first file in a folder in order to ignore media there. If files are already indexed, just rename such folders forth and back (opening the Gallery in the middle) and there you go.
You can use the Nomedia application for creating easily the .nomedia

This maybe isn't useful to you, but I'm having exactly the same problem. I'm running CM10 FXP133 on my Xperia Ray. Wrote a post a bout it here.
So I guess we're both equally desperate. Anybody please help!
/Daniel
Not sure if this is any good (I don't have time to try it out right now), but I found this.
/Daniel
edit: Nope. Sorry. Didn't work. Crap.
Looks like its a problem with the latest nightly.. it was working fine last release...
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I partially solved my problem. Something had put a .nomedia file in /sdcard, which quite naturally led to problems. I removed the file and did a new scan and now I got photos in the gallery again. Apollo is still empty though, so I'm kinda pulling my hair here. Done the obvious stuff (reboots, clearing cache, purging app data).
/Daniel
Ha! Found the rest of the solution. Seems the media scanner doesn't scan all folders anymore but just some (found out about it in this post). I moved some of my music to /sdcard/downloads, run a scan and suddenly it's there in Apollo.
Oh, and the .nomedia in sdcard root appeared again. No idea where it comes from, but it seems like a good idea to check for it and delete it once in a while. Strange things happen...
Oh. And sorry to the OP for hijacking this thread. I hope some of my mumbling is useful to you

I reflashed rom again, and now in gallery and apollo, media is showing.
Maybe it's a problem with Rom Manager, because that pushed .nomedia files in wrong folders.

after using Rescan Media Root https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascannerroot
there's a folder in DCIM called 100ANDRO.
put the music files in there and stock player detects them
put pictures in DCIM>Camera and gallery finds them.

Similar thing happened to me on CM9, Xperia mini. I deleted the .nomedia file and cleared the app data on music players and things are fine now.
My status on this one right now is that scanning mostly works. It refuses to scan some directories though. If I move all my music to /sdcard/music it's scanned, but in /sdcard/subsonic/music where it's always been before it's not. The only big problem with this is that for example /sdcard/ringtones is not scanned. So according to the system I no longer have any custom ringtones. This gotta be a bug, right?
/Daniel
Maybe you could try another music app like winamp. Because there you can do a manually media scan and as far as I know you can choose the folder where it should scan manually, too. Maybe give it a shot

at first i couldn't find my ringtones, put one in sd/ringtones and in the system/media/audio//ringtones
in doing all this i ran SDrescan and rescan media root multiple times.
now i've got two of the same showing up.
one thing the messed me up is that the ringtone filename is not used on the menu.
instead, the ringtone menu is pulling the metadata to tile it.
so I've got my filename 'ringtone.mp3' but it show up in the menu as 'song'

Ok. I also ended up putting my ringtones in /system/media/audio//ringtones which solves my problems. The media scanner still doesn't want to have anything with the ones in /sdcard/ringtones to do. Guess the media service will need some polishing before CM10 is released
