Hi, i have just flashed the new HyperDroid v5.2.21 (Full wipe) and i wanted to know if i can overclock my SGS2 from 1.2ghz to 1.5ghz, if so how do i go about it?
Do i need to change the current kernel (XWL1)?
P.S ive heard its stable, but does it drain the battery?

Hello there. Yep you can overclock but you need a kernel that supports it. [url="http://gokhanmoral.com]SiyahKernel[/url] is a good choice. With that, use the Voltage Control app from the market.
However I know nothing about battery draining or stability... dualcore 1.2GHz mobile processor is more than enough for me, and the phone can get pretty hot under maximum load, same with the MALI GPU which can be overclocked to 400MHz (but since it has 4 cores and the phone has no active heatsinks it could get risky...)

I think AndroidMeda kernel already supports OverClocking...using this ROM for a quite long time...

Yes you can overclock and you can stick with the kernel that comes with Hyperdroid. I am currently Overclocking 1.6ghz max and 200 min. Not touching voltages though. Use No-Frills app to set it up. My advice though to you no point in overclocking as 1.2ghz is good enough as it is..And the kernel you are on is good enough...It is stable depending what voltage frequencies you use..I say leave it as they are. And like i said download No-Frills from the market..Set your clock speeds and that should be it..Choose a governor and off you go

No-Frills ? AndroidMeda Developers recommend Voltage Control (and I personally like it much more than No-Frills, too) with their kernel.

Pongster uses No-Frills. The rest of the team uses Voltage Control. And to avoid any freezes or random reboots leave the voltage settings as they are till you get to grips with the overclocking. Hence why i suggested No-Frills as currently Voltage Control for me kept on reverting back to stock frequencies..And yes there is a way round it but it is to much of an effort

I am currently using ondemand and Sio as scheduler. You can not go wrong with that. Like i said..choose a governor choose a scheduler and let them do the work...I also do recommend Voltage control but No-frills is simple and does the job for you. And no i would recommend either go to 100min or stick with 200...I am currently on 1.6max and 200 min

I personally use Sleepy governor and noop scheduler, but everyone uses different governors and schedulers...
I think 200 min is OK...100 MHz is too low and 500 is too high...

I have -75mV (previously had -50mV) and I haven't ever had any freeze or random reboot...

Thanks for the support guys, and yeah i am new to this whole android/rooting scene so no-frills looks like a nice simple and easy option for now until i get to grips with things. i will try out the differen governors and schedulers and see whats best for me.
P.S Neo is yours running stable at the maximum 1.6ghz?

Listen go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1369817 and read regarding governors and schedulers..Pretty straight forward and good explanations...And i am running the latest hyperdroid version but i am using Siyah kernel with thunderbolt tweaks...For you i would use the kernel that comes with the rom and use the default governor that comes with the rom...When i was on previous kernel version i always use to use Kenobi...Not sure if they have it there or if Pongs removed it but either that or solo...

Well I recently switched over from SetCPU to VC and am quite happy with it... figured I'd make a thread for users to share their experiences with the app...
First a few ground rules...
You must share the following info...
Kernel, Rom, Paid of Free version of the app, Screen on time, and all your settings in the fields in the app. Also include your average battery life on a full charge and if you're on the stock battery/charger or not. *Pics are encourages and appreciated.*

I'm also using the paid version of VC which is awesome and I have undervolted quite a bit.
*The following voltages are being tested for stability*
Noop + Ondemand
100mhz-1200mhz
1200mhz: 1200 mV
1000mhz: 1050 mV
800mhz: 950 mV
500mhz: 850 mV
200mhz: 850 mV
100mhz: 825 mV
GPU 114-267mhz
114 @ 800
267 @ 950
I average about 24hrs - 26hrs of battery pending my use with about 3hrs of screen on time.
Purpose of this thread is to exchange information on how to get a better performing and more battery efficient phone using some tweaks.
P.S. Remember all phones are different and you should NEVER expect someone else's config to work for you. The purpose in this is to get a base line for tweaking and help out users with little or no knowledge about getting good battery life and also how to make their phone faster/more efficient.

Well personally I set a voltage then assign my min and Max to the frequency that corresponds to the newly set voltage and then run a benchmark to see if any issues occur.

Not getting the battery life i would like, i still drop a few percent per hour when not doing anything, but im pretty sure thats because im on 2.3.6! ive been trying to do that gpu 3 step thing i keep hearing about via scripts but it seems to mess up my voltage settings!

A question: Do you use both VC and SetCPU? Won't the governor setting in VC clash with the governor settings/advance settings and profiles set in SetCPU?
Fearing that, just today morning I switched to VC Lite from SetCPU (and froze SetCPU) as I wanted scheduler control.

Governor: conservative
Frequencies: 200-1000
Voltages:
1600 - 1400mV

You'll find that you can run lower voltage on a forced single stepping than you can when the CPU has several steppings to choose from. For some reason the CPUs don't play well if you go to low or if it has to make to big of a jump between certain steppings.

I no longer use setcpu and I do run quadranrt or antutu usually. pro version has no such stress test, but if you ask me... one should be implemented in a future update.
What amazes me is the difference a rom can make. Running Siyah 2.6.11 with the exact same VC settings (the ones in the OP of this thread) on CM7 nightly and ShoStock 1.9.1 and running Quadrant the results are about 1000-1500 points higher on cm7 nightly. From a user feel perspective they are both smooth as butter but I wonder what makes CM7 so much faster on the synthetic benchmark. Has to be a storage I/O thing or something. Battery life seems to be better for me on ShoStock though.

I used to test steps individually but again what's stable individually might not be stable with all the other steps included. I usually will quickly run through apps like mms, email, video, web, and also run a few BMs like antutu
A useful app with all the bells and whistles, with the capabilities of almost every utility app available is ROM Toolbox. I use it to edit voltage, CPU frequency, build.props, etc. Look into it if you're tired of trying hundreds of different programs for different features.

I think smartassv2/noop is a good combo... It has a good battery/performance ratio.

For this chipset i like SMartassV2 & deadline (SUPER FAST+STABLE)

XPERIA MINI . ST15 . antutu benchmark scores . over clocked my cpu to 1516 with voltage control.
my current set up interactivex/sio (score 3951)
savagedzen/sio (score 3911)
smartassv2/noop (score 3991)
smartassv2/deadline (score 3953 )
lagfree/vr (score 3953)
not sure whether antutu is best app to test out but yeah.. lol btr than nth i guess
1.5GHz is not the best frequency for the Mini - it causes the CPU to freeze frequently. Even 1.4GHz frequency is not the best. 1,3GHz and interactive governor is the optimum for my Mini - fast, responsive, no lag, no freezing, 2 days of battery life.

seriously watch out with OC that high.
You can easily fry your mainboard/CPU and than it's goodby mini. Better have a mini that work's than having a fried mini...
at least watch the temperature.

First of all, ask yourself do you REALLY need OC. Or are you just doing it because you can
I personally think the mini is sufficiently fast on it's own?
But if you must OC then install a temperature monitoring app and let it warn you when the phone gets exceedingly hot.
Because if you play a game while OC-ed, the temp might jump real fast real high.
And by the time you figure that, the phone could fry.
I definitely wouldn't go over 1.5GHz. Even that's real high. 1.3GHz seems to be ok though

btw how do we know that our phones are overheating?? mine is usually around 28-35 on normal usage but when gaming it goes to around 40++ is that ok?
I think 50C would be maximum... Still don't keep it at 50C all the time.
There is no safe stuff.
Overclocking is dangerous in every damn way.
No one wants to brick their phone, they don't play with OC. Besides, performance boost is quite small, pointless to waste the juice.

yeah i agree.. oc is always dangerous.. but on the performance side.. i do feel it.. apps quit a lot faster and launch faster..
a random question but does GO launcher slows down my system?? Is it better to stick to the original launcher?
I'm using the just released LATAM OTA leak (but this also holds true for the first LATAM OTA leak).
The default governor for this 2 OTA leaks is 'interactive' but I was having a very choppy gaming experience, then I decided to change governors and analyze what happened.
When I give 'hotplug' a shot I noticed a much more fluid gaming experience and as time passed I also noticed my battery life was much better.
Did anyone else notice this too?

I hope it gives better battery, it shuts CPU 2 off/on when its not/is needed.
hotplug is the same as ondemand governor except with the ability to turn off the second core when not in use.

You can google up SetCPU governors and there are detailed explanations into how each governor performs and their advantages/disadvantages. For most stock kernels, hotplug is the way to go for dual core phones as most of the better ones are usually in custom kernels.
Will hotplug save more battery than conservative?

Yes, of-course. Really works for me too, noticed greater performance and battery life.
unfortunately, not for me. i use CPU Tuner to change from ondemand to hotplug, and the performance was a little more laggy.... dont know about battery life though.
question: whats the high/low threshold you guys use? by default, setting hotplug in CPUTuner sets it to 60/40. i know something like 90/98 probably saves a LOT of battery, but performance is crap. and i dont have time to do full trial n error.... lol

The whole time that i have had the rezound i have had problems with the cpu settings sticking, and i read somewhere that using a script to set it works best. would this work? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1584508. and also since I have not really had luck with them sticking i would like to know what you guys think is the best governor, i was probably going to use smartassv2, wheatley, or pegesusq, but im not sure if they are the best for performance and all the explanations of them dont really tell if they perform in real life. Im looking for mostly performance, but i dont want something that will destroy my battery

Why would you want a CPU governer if it wasn't to help with your battery life?

well yeah i have that, im running cubed ics kernel 2.3.5, and i just want a better way to make my overclock stick and which governor will give the best performance without completely using up the battery, kind of a happy medium but leaning a little more towards performance. I guess I didnt explain that good enough

These are a bit dated and from another phone, but can provide a bit of insight into kernel governors and their behavior. Keep in mind a few technical points are different for our phone (different min/max clock speeds) but much is the same in general.
tl;dr Smartassv2 should meet your needs as a top performer while still gaining some battery savings. Try with noop or sio I/O scheduler. A modest undervolt, but avoid pushing it.

I have no problems keeping my Governor (Wheatly) set with System Tuner using the set CPU preference to remember after boot complete.
