I like to record idiot drivers. At night the screen is too bright and I'm scared that I'll end up getting pulled over because a cop might think I'm watching a movie.

I'm sorry...but I can't resist pointing out the irony in this statement. Other idiot drivers?
Maybe your solution is to install a FFC - that way you could also record the person holding their phone in front of their face while driving, in an attempt to record these so-accused "other idiot drivers." Classic.

[Q] Camera rattle

Okay, so, I got my Photon replaced yesterday for wonky vibration, and that's working as it should. And, the phone doesn't have the same creakiness as the previous one, so that's a plus.
However, I now find that this one has a rattle that I've narrowed down to the camera. Basically, if I shake the phone (lightly) towards and away from you with the phone (not side to side, if you get my meaning), then there's a rattle in the general vicinity of the camera. The clincher is that there's an audible click when turning on the camera, and the rattle is no longer there. Turn the camera off, and the rattle returns.
Anybody else have this? I'm guessing it's the autofocus mechanism engaging, but I wouldn't have expected it to be loose when it's not turned on. And, I don't remember my previous Photon doing this.
Edit: this is not meant as a dig against the Photon. I love mine--it's arguably the best phone I've ever owned, so far. Fast, great build quality, I love the screen (easily viewed in sunlight, in particular), and decent enough battery life. I just want to know if my Photon is defective so that I can get it replaced or not--by itself, the rattle is hard to notice and not at all a problem.
Are you sure its not the battery slightly moving? I thought i had the same problem and it was the battery. Also get the clicking noise at start up. I think thats normal.?

Nope, it's absolutely something in the camera. Here's how I know: in the process of gently shaking the phone, I can hear the rattle, turn on the camera and hear an audible click, the rattle stops, turn off the camera, and the rattle immediately starts again.
+1 confirmed. Same here
Same here! I was wondering why it did that

So, you have a click in the area of the battery when you start up? Do you get a click when you start your camera app (hold the camera to your ear and start the app)? Because if you get the click when your Photon boots, don't get it when the camera app starts, and don't have the rattle...
Hmmm.

You guys are really starting to look for anything to consider wrong with this phone is seems. That rattle noise is the lense cover inside of the phone that covers the retina, it just hangs limp when the camera is off. Once you enter a camera app and initialize the camera, it is yanked off to the side to open the retina for pictures and is held securely in place. There is nothing wrong with the phone, it is supposed to do this.

Excuse me? I hear a noise in my phone that I've not heard on other phones I've owned, and that I don't remember hearing with my previous Photon, and so I post a question on a forum asking if others have heard it, and I get castigated for it? Seriously?
To keep the thread on track, I take it you hear the noise as well with your Photon? Because all I want to know is if it's normal for the phone (i.e., a preponderance of Photons exhibit the effect), and if it is, it's not a biggie. If it's not normal, then it could indicate a problem that could cause issues down the road.
Would it be so hard to simply answer the question asked? Yeesh.

The question was indeed answered. Don't pay any mind to the hostility, just starting to see way too many nitpicking threads over things that aren't even really a problem with the phone. Tends to portray a bad image for people scoping out the phone as a potential upgrade.

I updated my post to reflect how much I like my Photon. But seriously, not every concern that's raised is just a "nitpick."

Incidentally, a note: mine is loud enough to easily hear from arm's length in a non-quiet room (i.e., in the living room while my family is yapping). Again, not trying to make a mountain out of a molehill, but is yours THAT loud? Some other references to this on other forums seem to imply that it's much fainter than mine...
Would love to see that, thanks.

[Q] Possible to focus on computer screen with camera?

I am beginning to wonder if my autofocus is broken on my Atrix, because when i put the camera in front of my computer screen at various distances nothing happens, it is just blurry. Is this how it should be or is my camera broken?
Edit, I've attached an image to show how it looks
That's how mine looks. No focus feature

Strange, it says that it has automatic focus but it behaves like a fixed focus camera.
When I compared with an iPhone it focused on the computer screen to make it clear..
Are you leaving the shutter button pressed for a couple of seconds so autofocus kicks in and then release?
Mine works great!

Nothing happens, just get a rectangle in the middle. Must be broken.
Also from what I remember with my HTC Desire you could hear the autofocus if you shook the phone a bit. No sound from the camera house on the Atrix.
No problems here!

I know this sounds stupid, but make sure the camera lens is clean. It will get covered in oils from your hands through normal use.

blue smear in screen

My device has "acquired" a blue smear in the screen ... Is this going to be perminent?
.. don't know how it got there .. think it must be pressure caused .. but don't see how that would have happened through...
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks
Kris
I had this problem. Mix peanut butter and a lil clorox on a rag. Rub it on for a min then wipe it off.

Does this appear to be under the screen or on top?
It's under the screen... Had a screen protector on it from day one.. took that off to make sure it wasn't on the screen

Ugh, it is sounding a bit like you have somehow caused the liquid crystal to leak from the LCD. When there is a thin film on, below, or between a lens it causes the optical symptoms you describe. I could be wrong, but without looking at it and given the description if I were a betting man that is what I would bet on.
I have the same blue streak but its only visible under sunlight at the right angle. Doesn't really bother me.

That would be another optic symptom of some sort of liquid on a film. If you ever see a rainbow it's almost a sure thing.

I'm sure its something that occurred during the production of my phone. It doesn't affect anything and I sure as **** don't want a 1.50 hboot phone. Since its only visible in direct sunlight and at a certain angle I live with it. Kinda interesting to see someone else with the same issue though.

Yeah, this is BS. Makes me mad, you guys can fix it if you really want to though. Get on Ebay and look for the glass + digitizer + LCD and housing all in one piece, that way you can fix it without getting hboot 1.5

I occasionally get that buzzing sound also. It only happens when I initially open the camera app until i touch the screen to focus. Then the buzzing stops. If I reopen the camera app it buzzes again.
OP, what did you do with this issue?
From my exeperience, the camera buzzes when it's not in focus....
Somehow I remember how to make it buzz on purpose but I THINK.... using the Quick Menu and Flash light... turn the screen off or wait till it says the Flash light is OFF in the menu but it's still on... then open the camera and it'll shut off but camera will be buzzing... I think that's how I did it. Don't try it just saying...
But it seems like your not the only one. There's another thread and few people had already gone through the same thing. They most likely said it was due to the camera not in focus.
i posted this in another thread but will post here as well;
"I am not 100% sure, but I do know that the lens moves around in the "barrel" or "eye" if you will. This is how it maintains focus. The mechanical part that forces the lens to move I believe is stuck... sometimes if you tap the camera the buzz will stop.
And I am no developer so take this with a grain of salt, but i remember that some flashlight mods or apps actually activate the camera and though it's not recording the camera will still attempt to maintain focus (due to being "on"). This would explain the buzzing when using the LED light outside of the camera app.
I don’t claim to know anything really... someone with more expertise feel free to lynch me "

This is correct, there's basically a tiny little motor in there and the buzzing you're hearing could either be the motor or the gears. This is normal as far as I know, and everyone can hear it if you make the room realllyyy quiet and then focus.
I have the smane problem.
It is a video from someone on youtube that have the problem too:

Is there any way to get the notification to light up when the phone is face up? And if not how hard would that be to implement in an app? That notification light is real slick imo its just such a shame I never place my phone upside down like that.

Shouldn't it be possible as a third party app? It doesn't seem like too difficult of a task but then again my programming experience is limited
there are 2 apps in the store i found. Hope one of them works for you

Unfortunately these all require the phone's entire screen to be on. I don't think, with stock firmware and kernal, that we would be able to have Samsung's feature work as it should with the phone facing up. It would be nice tho, since we could have it only use the edge of the screen and save power.
Why on earth did Samsung decide on face down.

Seriously. Especially when it probably took more work to limit it than it would have to make it not matter.
