maybe u got a bad adapter? maybe there is a setting you need to enable?
Tried 2 brand new adapters and nothing and everthing I've read says no settings, it should just work.

Try reading this.

Followed that originally and it didn't work

You probably got a bad adapter. Or does your TV support the resolution that the Rez outputs?
Just got my MHL in the mail and works great.

I just tried it yesterday and it worked great!
I have one I am using from my girl friends Infuse and it didn't work at 1st for me. My problem was that I was just pluging it into the phone and HDMI to the TV. When using it you have to by plug into power to get it to work or so it would seem for me.
Yes you need to plug the adapter into the phone, the charger into the adapter and an hdmi cable from the adapter to the tv. Works great just a pain compared to micro hdmi out! You can buy all the stuff you need from monoprice.com for less than the official MHL adapter.
I have the monoprice one. I can confirm: it HAS to be connected to power (charger or USB both work) to function, not just if you want the phone to charge while using the adapter.
Quoting myself from the other MHL thread:
What I did was use a short HDMI cable, short micro USB cable plugged into one of my TVs USB ports for power, and then mounted the adapter to the back of my TV with velco. I then use a micro usb extension cable to connect the adapter to my phone, cutting down a TON on the octopus effect. And I can always disconnect the adapter to take it with me somewhere.

after updating to honeycomb... when i connect to PC(i have a dell XPS) i get a error message "the device has exceeded the power limits of the port" with a cross sign so i cant connect to PC this happens when i use normal usb ports of my laptop....however i am able to connect my flyer using esata port of my XPS.
this is not good as i don't have a esata port in my other old laptop and desktop where also i want to connect my flyer....
i am using default cable and using stock HC official one...
please help if there is a solution to this!!!! thanx in advance
i tried changing connection mode from charge only to htc sync and other options... nothing worked... this was happening from 1st day bt i never gave attention coz eSATA port was working but now i want to connect to other device running out of ideas...
try using a standard microusb cable rather than the flyer one.
That esata port you're using is a dual-mode port. Basically, it's 1 hole w/ both esata and USB pins inside. I'm guessing though it must have higher power ability (1A probably) which is why it works better.
Using the stock cable, the flyer is trying to charge and pulling too much power from the USB port. Normal USB is limited to 500ma, but the flyer *can* draw around three times that. A normal microUSB cable will let you connect for sync/data purposes but the flyer will know it's just a data connection and not try to charge over it.

it was still same with standard cable... but i fixed it by resetting the port.. now its working fine.. looks like win 7 was disabling the port coz it was drawing lot of power instantly....
What cables can I use to plug a normal USB flash drive into my phone? I can't find a female to female USB to use with my photon USB cable. am I overlooking the obvious or is it not possible?

I dont think it's possible. A computer reads the phone when it's plugged in but the phone doesnt read the computer so I dont see it reading a flash drive either.
Ive seen that you supposedly can, and would like to give it a shot. Here is an app that supposedly will, im just struggling with the physical aspect of plugging one into my photon..
I found one at Radio Shack.

Thats a mini USB, not a micro. And all that i find that are indeed micro USB upon reading reviews appear to not be USB Host OTG cables. Can anyone confirm or deny if this will work for what im trying to do..? I *think* it will but want to confirm before ordering. thanks!

Gonna need to splice in a 5v power source as the Photon doesn't supply power.

Is this the case for external hdd powered by USB only? Or just normal USB flash drives also?
Most OTG capable devices (again I don't think the Photon is one) only supply about 100mA. This is barely enough to power flashdrives. Only low power flashdrives work, beyond that most usb devices that are powered by usb only will not even turn on.
In short if your usb device powers up and works using only an OTG cable, consider yourself lucky.
Hi i brought an otg cable for my phone however when i plug it in the cable is not showing up as usb host on notification bar like some youtube videos that show that. I just want to plug in a small usb flash drive that does not need power to boot up. I can't find a way to make the phone recognize the cable. I running ics by SHOstock v2.2.6. thank you for any help. Also did numerous searches on google and here with no results on getting this thing to work.
Have you tried toggling on/off usb debugging?
My OTG cable works fine. The odds are either your cable is not true USB OTG cable (it must short out one of the PIN at the microUSB connector side) or the custom ROM you are runing does not have USB OTG support. I'm running leaked UCLD3 ROM.
What??? There is an OTG cable? For real?
I got the regular male-microUSB to female-standardUSB cable and it works just fine with AOKP

Yes there is. IIRC, the PIN5 must be shorted to ground on the microUSB port on the cable to trigger the phone into USB host mode. AOKP ROM might be created to ignore suck requirement but that's not how USB OTG works.
Well I brought the cable 2 days ago off eBay and I send an email to the vendor and he's sending me another one I hope it works for me. If not I was planning to buy the official brand name Samsung one on Amazon and I hope it works with that.

Nope. Generic adapters usually don't work. You need a specially made cable with proper PINs shorted.
This is the one I bought http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005QX7KYU/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
Thank you so much I'm going to try the second because after noticing the Motorola one on the list didn't work I think fox is right thank you all for all your help.
Do you now of an HDMI adapter that would work
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
I don't own any MHL adapter (HDMI adapter). But it should be standard as long as you properly supply power to the adapter externally.
I've had the official Samsung MHL adapter since the phone came out and it still works flawlessly. There pretty cheap now you can find one for about 22$. Or you could try a generic but some people love em some people throw em in the garbage

What's the other hole at the bottom of the USB for? I noticed that the USB cable that comes with the S5 covers both holes but I've been using a Micro USB to charge it...does it make it charge faster or something?

i see...so it's mainly for data transfering then? or does it charge faster to compared with microusb (looking from bottom, i only have it plugged in the right side with micro usb)

It charges a lot faster indeed.
The difference is usb 3 vs usb 2. If you are using for instance an S4 cable you are connected at usb 2 speeds. The cable supplied with the S5 has 2 parts because it is usb 3 connection. You will definitely get a faster data transfer speed using the usb 3 cable. I would guess that charging would be faster also but I can't verify that. One of the big upgrades in the S5 is usb 3 compared to usb 2 for the S4.

That's also reliant on the fact that your PC or whatever it is you are connecting to is USB 3. You can't get USB 3 speeds if your connecting to a USB 2 port on the PC.
It's the one where she goes "AHHHHHHHHHH"
and you go "sorry"
DOH!
The faster charging only applies to charging from plugging into a computer. USB 3.0 ports have higher maximum output than USB 2.0
