[Q] Does the Epic have a nicer screen than ours? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I met a guy with an (unrooted) epic today, and his screen was gorgeous. The colors were very "wet" looking and a lot more vibrant than those on my sc2.9.1 fascinate, even when I set it to maximum brightness. I thought all the galaxy s phones used the same screen. Is ours different?

All galaxy S phones should have super AMOLED displays.

Most the time it's just the image...galaxy s phones share the same screen. Some say voodoo can increase the apperance.

Its strange, since his colors were definitely more vibrant than mine. Even comparing text in a menu, the colored text (blue) just popped off the screen more noticeably than mine. Could it be a rom thing?

So my voodoo kernel is making the colors worse? Hmmmm......
His epic was completely stock, so I know he didn't have a voodoo kernel (in fact, I was explaining to him what voodoo was, since he was surprised at the speed of my phone)

Voodoo can increase visible asthetics...if his was stock don't see how it's possible. Probably your settings. My screen looks clean and wet as hell.

the above is all true to my knowledge. however, as of right now we don't have the voodoo sound and color enhancements because the devs don't have the actual source kernel from samsung. hopefully soon tho!

he likely has a kernel with the voodoo color fix, we can't make froyo kernels with the color fix cause we have no source, but the epic does.

He doesn't. He was completely unrooted and knew nothing about modifying his phone. I told him to visit XDA when he saw how much faster my Fascinate was compared to his Epic.

That, or, every screen looks different. My first Fascinate has a perfect screen. No red or purple at low brightness, no blue or yellow tinge to whites. My second one was awful. Horrible red and yellow tinges on the whole screen. This one(my 3rd one) has slightly blue tinged whites and slight purple tinges to gray at 0% brightness. It just depends on where it was manufactured and when. I think my 2nd one was a bad batch that somehow made it through QC.

Could it be the screen protector by any chance? When i first got my phone the guy put an antiglare protector on, i thought nothing of it, until 6 months later i went back and got a glossy clear one and OMFG, ITS LIKE A BRAND NEW PHONE... i wanna punch the first guy in his face
Sent from my rooted froyo Fascinate

I used to deploy new PCs for a living. When I started doing workstations with dual monitors, all identical, I started seeing how identical monitor models from the same batch do NOT always match. In fact, I would say none of them match exactly, though some are closer than others. There will always be variances during manufacturing that cause visible differences in what appear to be identical screens.

Screen Colors Off?

Does anyone eleses yellows and Greens look off esp the yellows they seem to be very dull and off and almost orange
I agree, the market icon look Olive-colored on Atrix 4G
A lot of you were looking at the oversaturated SAMOLED screens for a long time... this is way more natural.

Qhd is not a screen technology, its a resolution.
And the problem with the colors isn't that they're dull or unsaturated compared to a super amoled., that's to be expexted. The problem is that the colors are just wrong compared to just about any screen you want to compare it too, load up some websites on the phone and a well calibrated desktop monitor and you'll easily see the difference.
Compared to my captivate im really happy. That thing made skin tones green or orange.
It has to be reiterated. The oled display technology OVERsaturates the colors. As in, the colors are overly vibrant. The atrix will more accurately display colors.
Ok, saying this again. We (at least I) am not saying this in comparison to a samoled screen, the colors on a regular LCD will obviously never look like that, the colors on the amoled are completely wrong. However that doesn't mean the atrix has them right, just look at the screen compared to a well calibrated computer monitor.

Bumping this to get some attention on this issue.
I'm considering returning my Atrix because of how bad yellows and blues look, compared to OTHER LCDs, not compared to Super AMOLED screens.
I lined up my Captivate, Atrix, iPod Touch 4, and my wife's HTC Evo Shift and fired up Words with Friends on all of them. While it's clear that the Captivate is oversaturated, if you take that out of the equation, the Atrix's colors just look bad compared to the other two LCDs. The yellow tiles look "dirty" like they have a brown or greenish tint to them. The light blues in the tabs on the home screen of Words with Friends look like they have a greenish tint as well.
I've seen a lot of people say that they think it's one of the greatest displays ever, up there on par with the iPhone 4. If that's true, I really hope mine and other people seeing this just have defective models that can be exchanged.
I'm going into my AT&T store sometime tonight or tomorrow in hopes of putting two or more Atrices side by side to compare.
If anyone else seeing this problem could do the same, it would be very helpful. Especially as it seems likely that a random one pulled out in store could have the same defect.
Scott, I have my atrix boxed up ready to go back for the same issues. I went to the at&t store and looked at their 3 demo units, all of them looked the same.
If you go to a verizon store and play with a motorola droid x you'll see that its screen looks the same as well, it's just whatever panel maker motorola is using. People that are saying "It's the greatest screen evar, just as good as the iphone 4" are suffering new gadget love and can't see the flaws. It's not the worst screen ever but it is a definite step down from other manufacturers screens.

I would have to agree, the iphone4 has a pretty good display. It is a bit oversaturated, but does look pleasing to the eye. The iphone is also much smoother when using the pinch to zoom feature. With the Atrix having a dual core processor, I thought it would at least be on par with the iphone, but for some reason it's definitely not as smooth.
Oh well... just my 2 cents.
So I went in to an AT&T store last night and compared my Atrix with their demo unit.
The colors seem a little bit better, but interestingly, the demo unit's display didn't seem as bright as my Atrix, and it may have had slightly higher contrast.
I got one of the associates to look at it and agree that mine had a slight color cast to it. They said they would do a replacement for me if I came back with my paperwork from my online order, so I said I would do that today or Saturday.
I went straight home and compared my Atrix again to my wife's HTC Evo Shift. In doing that, I still felt like the color on her screen was significantly better than on mine, and in seemed better than I remembered the store's demo unit, as well.
So, I think I need to get my phone and her phone both in there, side by side with the demo unit, and see if I could live with the screen if it was exactly the same as the demo unit. I think probably yes, given the other major advantages of this phone (qHD resolution, Tegra 2, 1GB RAM), but as a graphic designer, bad colors are hard for me to take. And colors that are off in the way the Atrix's screen is off are a graver sin to me than oversaturating a la Super AMOLED.
Bottom line, I'm still on the fence. Has anyone else done any other tests?

Wait, so now the iPhone's IPS LCD is oversaturated too? Let's face it: Atrix is weak on colors -thanks to the RGBW PenTile display, where they tried to prolong its life by replacing some Blue tiles with White tiles -which makes colors pale.
It does look great with flesh tones though. Ill give it that.
People who complain about wrong colors have been looking at way oversaturated screens... as a semi advanced photographer, I can agree that the atrix screen is very very good color wise ...

Or they got an Atrix with a defective display, like me. Ony my Atrix, there's no getting around the fact that yellows look dirty and brown, and that certain shades of blue look greenish.

[Q] Blue tint problem?

I was in the o2 shop today playing about with the Galaxy S2 and I noticed that if I angled the screen slightly, everything would get a blue tint to it. This was most noticeable when there is a lot on white on the screen.
Is this a common problem with the new handset, as I remember reading a similar thing with the older super amoled panels?
I loved the phone, but was put off by the blue tint.
Thanks.
I've actually noticed this myself with a phone I bought from phones4u (avoid them at all costs). It's very odd I thought for SAMOLED since I thought they're not meant to have viewing angle issues like LCD and my old, original Galaxy S certainly doesn't have this issue. Also noticed slightly yellow whites. I got another SGSII from o2 (with bad GPS issues) that had a better screen but I must say - the evenness was a bit off and that was a big surprise given the SGSII is meant to have SAMOLED+ which is technically "better".
I'm beginning to think a bad first batch - i.e. rushed manufacturing.

Even though its supposed to have good viewing angles, its not supposed to be extreme like the iphone 4, there still will be a point with samoled that you will start to see a little distortion.. The blue tinge is on the first galaxy phones too, its something that is inherent with samoleds... You want to worry when you have the screen on full brightness and you see any yellow... But you will see the whites go a bit yellow when the brightness is low. samoleds have their own DNA and everyone is made differently. I do not think this batch was rushed at all, i actually think this is a better first batch than the first Nexus S batch, there was returns flying back from everywhere. I had 4 different NS myself..
I have also gone through 3 SGS2's but rightly so, two had a low hepatic feedback and press area on the back button and one had the piss yellow screen of death
But it worked out better for me because I returned the P4U one for 530 and bought an O2 one for 399. So faulty phones really do save you money;P
JD
Very strange. I have ordered one from o2 online to be delivered in 30 days time as I have already got a contract with Orange that doesn't run out for 2 months and I wanted to take up the discounted line rental offer thats running at mo.
Hopefully most of the problems will be sorted by the time I get mine
P.S. I wouldn't use Phones4U either. Heard quite a few horror stories about them.
Anyone else noticed a blue or yellow tint ?
Thanks

The one I played with today had quite severe blue tint with minimal movement of the handset.
Have yet to see what the yellow tint is like.
I'm sure I read in a review that Samsung have put in an option to change the colour balance on the Galaxy S2 ?
I hadn't noticed this until you stated it in this thread, and to be honest I can only see it when there's a white background. Personally, I don't think there are issues that detract from the user experience, and that's all that matters!
The Samsung Galaxy S II is still by far the best phone in the market right now.

Yes they have,
There is 3 presets,
One is like a nexus s pre 2.3.3 colour, and one is a post nexus 2.3.3 and one is somewhere in the middle But what your seeing is something not linked to the colour balance, your seeing what is a screen defect. But a blue hue is quite normal and not so off putting as a piss yellow hue The blue hue was desirable on the galaxy S. The iPhone 4 will have better white replication than the samoleds due to that its a LCD screen, But the blacks will always be better on the samoled

Check my topic " different screens??? or what is this???" here in de Q&a. You see 2 different sgs2 next to eachother, one with blue tint, other not.
Mine has the blue ish thing too, but to me it seems more like a coating?
Last night I lifted my Phone from my desk on low battery and the screen went very strange and turned to a completely washed out green/blue colour. I hit the lock button and then unlocked again and it all went back to normal. Very strange.

I have noticed this on the Galaxy s2 I was looking at in the store yesterday.
If I tilted the screen only about 15-20 degrees whites would appear blue. It realy put me off.
That was the only model they had there though, so I could not check if it was a defect specific to that one piece.

Just a suggestion: it could be due to the gorilla glass. Could be a refractive property when viewed at an angle.

Can someone point me to the correct thread please. Am very new to Android so haven't a clue really lol.

Green tinted screen?

Hey everyone,
Just picked up my GS2 from a local Best Buy (apparently AT&T corporate stores are not legally allowed to sell this phone in California).
Anyway, i've noticed the screen has a deep green tint. I've done some searching and noticed that some users have reported having a screen that is too warm, so there was a thread to mod the screen into being cooler (blueish tint)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17544096
Anyone else noticed a green tint? Any fix?
I got mine today and haven't noticed any problems with the screen yet, it might be a defective one....I'd take it back and get another one.
And the lottery begins...
Mine is definitely warmer than my captivate, but it kind of looks better too...
Mine seems very blue. Id like it to be more natural or warm

+1 and the screen seems more dark than my captivate was.
Swyped on my Galaxy SII
Best I can tell with my eyeballs the 'tint' appears to be linked to the brightness of the display. Ie grayscale and color calibration done with the 'brightness' turned way up or close to it.
If I get bored enough this week I may take some measurements at various brightness levels to see what is going on with the grayscale of my particular display. Then again, ignorance is bliss...

When i tilt my sgs2 it appears greenish on white stuff.. can someone confirm this is normal?
i've got the lovely blue hue as well.... but its something i've come to expect from the amoled series. the screen colors do look slightly cool but i'm loving the oversaturation
But does it appear green when you tilt it?
I just received my Galaxy S II in the mail today. I can confirm that I'm having the same issue (green-ish tint). If anyone has a fix to this, please let us know.
I honestly think this is the way AMOLED screens from Samsung look. I have never seen one that does not have the greenish effect from off viewing angles. It might have to do with the Gorilla Glass?? Possibly Glue?? I have seen multiple Galaxy S2's to include the Sprint version and all have the same tint to them.
Mine is like that but it has a beautifull screen that like and it still is the best phone on att

I have no complaints about the phone--snappy, responsive. I'm overall satisfied with it.
The only thing that turns me off is the green tinted display :/ I hope someone will add an option in a custom ROM to adjust the hue. It's really getting to me lol
Now i think about it my screen could appear a bit blue.. But anyone can confirm that it gets worse when you tilt the device? Pls!!!

Mine does this as well. Going to head to BB on Sunday and check to see if every one does it.
I can confirm the tint on the tilt, but as a whole, the screen hue seems much warmer than the Captivate.
kernel?
does the tint have anything to do with the kernel???
found this on another thread
As I was rooting the device i flashed the CF-Root for KE2 rom and it dramatically changed the colors of ms SGS2.
Now the white is clear and the colors are fine.
I have also tried flashing different Kernels and notices that
I9100UHKE5, I9100UHKE4, I9100XWKE8 Kernels have the same effect, All other Kernels give Greenish Blue Effect.
I have posted this before and it was ignored, I even sent private messages to a couple of the developers to investigate this maybe they can come with a solution to adjust the color saturation and was also ignored.
Anyway, I am not using the KE2 Kernel and my display colors are good and now Greenish tent.
I have tested this Kernel with 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 rome and it does not effect the performance of the device.

Yellow Tint On Whites

For some odd reason, there is a yellow tint to all whites on my Galaxy S II. This is starting to get annoying for me. After using my iPad or Apple Cinema Display with great contrast, going to the yellow tint on my Galaxy S II is very annoying.
I don't know if this is a software or hardware issue. I do not think this was a problem two months ago or so.
Software:
AOKP 5.1
N.E.A.K latest
Does anybody know a solution to this problem?
Thanks

Stock no problems clear white black blacks
I'm on stock (never even rooted) and I had the same issue starting on day 1. I noticed it right away because my previous phone was the Infuse 4G, and they're both supposed to be Super AMOLED+ displays, so I expected the same screen saturation. Interestingly, my Infuse 4G is at the top of its Super AMOLED+ glory, but the SII has very dulled out whites, and things like skin tone look pretty awful. It almost looks like the saturation/contrast/brightness/darkness settings are messed up.
I also compared my SII's screen with another friend's SII, and interestingly, hers was just like my Infuse 4G. Very sharp whites, amazing colors. She is however on the ROM previous to the official at&t update that came a few months ago. I assumed it was the software, but I've also read accounts of others saying they compared their phones with their wifes' or friends' and they're running the same build and they see the color differences.
The only final conclusion I've come down to is that OLED displays can vary and be inconsistent even between the same hardware devices, but the dulled out effect is pretty severe and not just a "barely noticeable if you look" kind of a thing. E.g. my friends all agree it's hard to play Temple Run on my phone because it looks extra dark (unless I put the brightness all the way up) and they can't distinguish well between the swampy water and the logged platforms =_= It's even worse when I watch movies and it's a night scene - the blacks are so black and undistinguishable from other shades of black, so a girl wearing a black jacket looks like her jacket is part of the night sky (whereas on my Infuse 4G, the blacks were very black indeed, but I'd definitely be able to tell where the hue differences were).

Screen color is warm, is everyone elses the same?

Just wondering if everyone elses LTE is set at a warm color, orange'ish whites
compared to the evo 4g which is cool with blue'ish whites
possible to ever change this?

My brothers has cool whites and I have warm whites...yet our panels are both Sony...so I don't get it.
mine is also a warm-toned screen, nonetheless it looks great
I posted about this yesterday but it already got buried. Unfortunately you can either hassle with taking it back and hoping for a more blueish white panel or you can get used to it. I hated the look when i unboxed, I have the same yellowish tint on white. But im already used to it for the most part. There is an app on the play store called "Screen adjuster" that you can add some blue back in but its not perfect and it has to run in the background i haven't tested to see how much of a load it puts on the phone if left on all day. Also a good app to use to visually inspect the colors your panel is showing is "dead pixel test". So software can be used to help the tint, but as far as a permanent solution, I believe that would be up to HTC. Maybe some devs can do it eventually once we have s-off.
I've just starting to really notice this, and its driving me nuts.
The whites are not white at all, they are more yellowish eggshell (or as I like to call it 'light puke'). You can really notice it when your in natural light. I held it up to something pure white and you can see an epic difference.
Does this not bother anybody else? I forget, but don't some ROMs (for other phones) have options to change screen tones? Is this something that I can look forward to ? Or perhaps my eyes (and mind) are just playing tricks on me.
I dislike 'warm' tones a lot. I wish I gotten a 'cool' tone phone instead, I can handle the blue tone a lot better.
I wonder why this is I mean it isnt like amoled n the screens should be.the.same.... Maybe dim lights inside?
Root it and try chainfire 3d, it has the option to change screen tone in I believe the pro version. Added bonus, works with all roms to my knowledge. I haven't tried it yet myself as I'm completely happy with the tone on mine, but I used it on the og evo for a long time.

Root it and try chainfire 3d, it has the option to change screen tone in I believe the pro version. Added bonus, works with all roms to my knowledge. I haven't tried it yet myself as I'm completely happy with the tone on mine, but I used it on the og evo for a long time.

Thanks, I'll give it a try since I'm already rooted. I messed around with 'screen adjuster' and 'filer your screen' and neither seemed to do the trick.
EDIT: Looks like I'll have to wait a bit longer to play with chainfire 3d. Requires S-off (or probably just unlock bootloader). Only have root. But chainfire looks promising.
This was a problem on the One X for AT&T but most of them cleared up after a week or so. My advice would be to keep the brightness up for a while when using it.

We have two EVO LTE and one of ours is much cooler and blue and the other is much warmer. How do you check if the display type to see if they are different?
My screen is warm also. At first I thought it was the ZAGG HD screen protector that was causing that yellowish tint, but after I removed it, it was still there.
If anyone with two EVO LTE phones can post a side-by-side picture of the warm and cool screens, I'd greatly appreciate it.
TIA
Here is a picture. Its not the best quality so it might be hard to tell a difference. The difference is much more apparent in real life.
Supposedly its due to the adhesive. There is a thread about it in the HOX forum. My screen seems to be whiter than it was a week ago but that may be a placebo effect- I need to do another side by side comparison with my iPhone to tell.

I was dreading a problem like this. I can deal with blacks not being black (have to deal with it with the very nature of LCD) but whites... Yeah, they need to be white.
Here's to hoping my device doesn't have this issue. I will update this post with news.
get an app called screen adjuster
then increase the blue a little bit, to about 15 or so
woooooorks wonderss!!!
On my NS4G, there was a kernel mod developed by SuperCurio that allowed you to adjust gamma levels. I always ran my phone with very cool blue whites.
Maybe something like that would be possible for the Evo?
I think I have the warmer screen color. Things like this doesn't bother me at all. I've seen thread like this everytime a new phone comes out. After a few week your eyes and OCD levels will adjust.

You can def tell the one on the right is the warm though. I'm sure in direct natural light the difference is huge.

I'm hoping this is the case. Its weird because I think it changes. Like after it goes in direct natural light it gets really bad.

Same. I can deal with the black but not the whites. Whites need to be crisp and clean not yellow. I repainted all the eggshell whites in my house to pure white. To me it takes away the crispness of the screen.

Man you hit the nail right on the nail. I had mine set at 14 for the past three days. It helps but it still isn't ideal. Plus its consuming resources.
dont think its an adhesive bonding process still "curing"
i think the color temp is permanent.
hopefully a dev will allow color temp change because its a little awkward staring at my pc monitor, then looking at the phone's brown and yellow drab lcd tint.

This is what I am praying for. But enough people have to be annoyed by it for somebody to do something.
The best test is to open the settings menu (Evo white) and compare it against a piece of notebook paper (real white). Its gross.
