Movinand.bin - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I prefer the granularity if heimdall when flashing over Odin. I have a question, however, concerning movinand.bin. it wasn't part of the eclair roms but is a part of the froyo roms. Any ideas what it is, or if not having a slot for it in heimdall will be a big problem. I prefer using heimdall when I hose my phone and need to flash stock, because I can leave out param.bin and recovery.bin and not wipe my recovery or custom boot logo, but still flash back stock. I'd prefer to keep doing it this way, but that extra bin file concerns me....

I don't remember what movinand.bin does but i know you don't need it. The ROM's the Devs here give us has it that removed. so using heimdall isn't a problem. If i remember correctly it is only necessary if you have to bring your phone back to verizon, so they don't know you rooted it in the first place.

Okay, that's cool...so I'd only need if if I was flashing bone stock di01 with Odin to put my phone back to total stock.

Best method for rooting EA28?

Well, I had been planning on waiting for the official release of 2.2 before rooting. Now that it's apparent that's a lost cause, and given that I have a weeke of spring break to fool with the phone, what's the best method for rooting a stock EA28 with the intention of then going on to try out a froyo version? From the sticky up top, I would guess its http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913470 . Has anything better come along? Ease of reverting to stock is important to me too.
That's the best way I'm aware of.
I know the one-click root method still works (I rooted EA28 that way), but you need to make changes to one of the .bat files before it does work. You also have to restart the phone in the middle of the process because it gets hung up. This method from adrynalyne is way better.
Once you are rooted and ready to jump into the world of Froyo ROMs, you will want to flash this updated CWR package from JT. It has been modified to better work with the way the system is set up in Froyo.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942021
Don't be alarmed that this new CWR mentions Voodoo when you're in recovery. It's set up to work with both Voodoo and non-Voodoo kernels. Also, it doesn't accurately report out the correct state of Voodoo if you are using it. You have to use other methods to determine if Voodoo has been enabled.
Once I root, do I have to flash all the EB01 zips to use SuperClean 2.9? It appears as if I do, problem is, I use a Mac at home and would have to use a windows parallel program to run Odin. I'd like to avoid that, if possible.

What do you mean by "all the EB01 zips?" Where are these zips located?
I have seen many people say Heimdall works with Macs. I would suggest looking that up and how to use it, as I have only used Odin on PCs.
the EB01modem.tar, and EB01voodoo.zips, specifically. Seems as if SC2.9 is on either EB01 or EB16.
If u use heimdall, and use a prerooted eb01 you alleviate the need to bother rooting ea28 beforehand.... heimdall doesn't care if you're rooted... it pushes whatever you tell it to the phone....be careful tho....it has no training wheels... if you try to get ahead of yourself and not read up thoroughly, so you know what is pieces to put in which blank....you could goof your phone up....at least temporarily

I d/l'd Heim last night, and it definitely looked like it required some reading beforehand. That's nice that it doesn't require root, but I'd like her phone to be rooted, either way. Seems there would be more advantages.
If you download the EB01 that adryn posted awhile back...the one for Odin... its pre-rooted....as are most roms...it's a big tar file... you can extract it with a tar extractor program, and it contains all the individual bin files that you use with heimdall for flashing....

I appreciate the response. Definitely gonna read up on heim and unzip that tar. Thanks

I love how elegant heimdall is....it gives you options.....like if you know you have a clean functioning recovery....then you don't add recovery.bin....if you have a hacked param file and a custom boot logo, you can leave the param field blank to preserve it. It.lets you fix only what's broken, without going back to bone stock on everything. I love of.

[Q] Bootloader files for Heimdall (JFD)

So, a week or two ago I asked how to use Heimdall to get from CM7 to Stock JFD. For Heimdall, you need to provide Bootloader files when repartitioning. So, does anyone know where bootloader files are for the Vibrant (Since they don't come in the JFD tar)?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Don't repartition when using heimdall. There's no need to and you shouldn't be flashing boot.bin file anyway.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Thing is, when I asked before about flashing down from CM7 to stock JFD, Benjamin Dobell (Heimdall Developer) encouraged checking repartition because of the differences in partition format between CM7 and regular RFS ROMs. Trust me, I don't want to flash bootloaders as much as the next guy, but really, I don't have many options (Unless no repartition from CM7 to stock on Heimdall works) seeing as I don't have a Windows PC currently. Anyway, I won't be doing this soon (Only going to flash when I need GPS, which is in about two weeks), so I may be able to get to a Windows PC before then (And get back to Odin where, despite its bugs, I feel comfortable).
well, there hasn't been a released/leaked boot.bin for the vibrant, so a repartition in heimdall is out of the question. Just flash jfd normally, and you'll be fine.
That explains why I've never been as to find one. I'm going to see if I can get hold of a Windows PC in the next week, and if not, I'll risk Heimdall and hope for the best.

that's the problem I can't flash another kernel because I only have stock recovery. for some reason I can't oden a new recovery. it acts like it goes through but then I reboot with the 3 finger salute and it's in the stock recovery again.

what if I pull the battery directly after oden finishes and then do the 3 finger to boot into recovery, would that keep it from going back to stock recovery?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
That'll work.
See, you aren't supposed to have the battery in when you use Odin anyways, that way, when it is done flashing, your phone just powers off making it easy to slap in the battery and do the three-finger into cwm at first boot.

make sure you unplug the phone before you put the battery in. if not, it'll just boot as normal.
There is no ED01 radio that we have available, so I'd be wary of whatever radio file you're flashing. Also, Odin 1.7 doesn't always work properly, try using version 1.3.

Side note on this, is there any practical barrier to bundling a kernel with a recovery Odin?
I noticed in the kernel packages that they generally modify /system when they install. So perhaps you would have to odin over data also to run in a script to complete the kernel install at boot. Meh, it would just be nice if installing recovery didn't require immediately wiping kernel and then odining recovery again.
I figured a compromise would be to CWM recovery with the kernel in the same step, then I noted I was just being lazy and it really isn't much trouble to go through once per factory restore.

I would download a CWM Odin file and one of the two odin files from here. Flash one of the two (doesn't matter which you do first) and once it completes, unplug the phone, and then plug it back in holding volume down to get back into recovery and flash the other file. You'll then have a stock kernel that won't re-flash recovery, so if you boot normally, it won't matter. You can also download Odin 1.3 from here

[q] cwm 3.0.2.8

Hey all,
Totally went back to stock...so started with DL09 and then proceeded up to ED04. I installed CWM (red) and rebooted into it and then rooted my phone. Worked great...this morning decided to wipe the battery stats...now it just goes to the Samsung (blue) recovery one. I decided to reflash with ODIN and it still just gives me the Samsung one. Any ideas on how to get this working again???
It sounds like your flash may have failed. Maybe try it again. It might be easier and more reliable to use heimdall in this situation as well.
Also, I know it's early, but this is a question and should be posted in the appropriate section.

What is heimdall? And yes I should have posted in the Q&A section.

You have to download this and ODIN to the phone ...
Code:
http://goo.gl/QCYxT
... What's happening is when you are booting up fully it is replacing the new recovery with the stock recovery... flash this, then flash CWM .. all will be cool!!

Heimdall works like Odin. Cwr is being overwritten by the stock kernel, you should flash a custom kernel if you want cwr to stick.
*Edit...beat me to it. :/

You may have to flash a custom kernel to get your recovery permanent. I did the same thing to get the ed04 ota.
1. Flash the dl09 tar file in odin, don't reboot.
2. Flash the cwm3 odin file of your choice, don't reboot.
3. Boot into recovery using the 3 finger salute (should be the one you just odined).
4. Flash the custom kernel of your choice & reboot.
That should keep it rooted & keep cwm available to you, at least it did for me. The key, fwig, is to repalce the stock kernel cuz that is what will replace cwm when it boots.

GB Bootloaders without Odin/Heimdall ??

Are there any ways to flash bootloaders without odin/heimdall? Perhaps like update.zip?
I had a bad SBL flash and heimdall will not detect and odin just hangs when attempting to flash any BL solo.
Before you flame or try to be Cpt Obvious I did search the forum but may have missed it...we are human.

No unfortunately there isn't bc it goes much deeper in the system than an update.zip can reach. Have you tried to Odin to 2.1 and get it to boot? 2.1 has Froyo bl's, so theoretically once you boot up, you should be able to flash a GB bl. Maybe your download got corrupted too.

I have successfully flashed to JFD with a heimdall one-click. I could even root, use CWM and I have flashed a custom rom. BUT....it still wont detect in heimdall and odin still hangs. Im typing this post from the device using bionix v3 fishman. I wanted to throw ICS on here to check it out. But I know GB BLs are step 1. I have a jig so getting DL mode isnt an issue.
