I want to push some ringtones (*.OGG) to the /System/Media/Audio/Ringtones folder/library on a rooted Atrix (AT&T). Heres my question:
If I push these files to the library/folder, will this affect the AT&T/Moto OTAs? In other words, will the AT&T/Moto OTAs not happen, or be rejected, due to this system library/folder having non-stock files in it?
Reason being, custom ringtones assigned to the phone notifications, which are stored on the SD (internal/external) cards, get unassigned when those SD cards are unmounted then mounted again. This happens either manually or via USB reassignment.
Thanks,
M
As we have never received an ota its not possbke to say with 100% certainty I can say that it prob wont bother it, also if it does stop it it is an easy fix, how ever I will remind you of limited space on that partition and your decision to do so might not be worth it, his bout just placing them on the internal storage rather than system partition or the sd card

Tried that. When I umounted that SD card for whatever reason, it resets the ringtone to a default tone. Gets annoying. To consider space, I'll probably just copy over the ringtones I want.
I'd love to have a solution to this as well, as i've encountered the same problem many a time and it's annoying to miss a call because a random song gets assigned to a contact.

I have a rooted solution, just concerned that foreign files in the System folders affect OTAs.
Root you phone, convert you audio files to OGG format, use Root Explorer to move the file to the folders:
/system/media/audio/alarms
/system/media/audio/notifications
/system/media/audio/ringtones
Why do you keep stating they have to be in OGG format? I have a file in MP3 format in there and it works fine.
If it's determined that it does affect an OTA, then it's not a big deal because you can always pull the files out, apply the OTA, re-root and put them back.
However, remember to NOT run an OTA until root has been figured out, or else you'll lose your root. I can't wait till the first OTA when all the folks will be posting "Lost root!" threads.
I would also appreciate a solution to this problem. My assignments will only be retained if on the system folder; they just will not stay if on the external or internal memory.
Now that the stock retail SBF has been leaked, I would think this is a non-issue.
I've moved a few ringtones to the system/ partition, because having my settings lost after every SD-mount was getting annoying.
Once there is an actual OTA for our phones, I'll be backing up my phone, flashing back to stock, and applying the OTA.
Bte, a font app bricked my phone yesterday so I had to use rsd to flash sbf 1.5.2. Still could not use tones off storage, only system. So I installed Gingerblur 7.2 & the possible persists.

I don't think this will break any updates.
But for those who want to make sure, just convert the file you need to .ogg and then rename it after a file that already exist and replace it with SU permissions.
Has the advantage that you replace sound files you don't want with ones that you need.
The disadvantage being you need to remember the file names.

Ok.
My phone apparently hates me ... but I can't figure out where the hell I'm going wrong.
I had 1.57 on my phone, rooted. I did the OTA update to 1.83. Then I ran Gingerbreak. After rooting, I put Greyblur on my phone, so I thought I had root access since SystemRestore ran.
I now have root, theoretically ... but I can't see half the files that I used to be able to (when I mount /system as r/w I can't write to it ...). [edit]Also, I can't "adb shell mount" ... I can push/pull files from the /system directory, but I can't edit them directly either through RootExplorer or "adb shell; $su" etc.[/edit]
I can't see user data in my files; it looks like TitaniumBackup can, since it's creating backup files, but I don't trust that it's actually getting all my user data.
I want to redo my phone from scratch, but I'm worried I won't be able to actually save all my user data/databases/etc from programs ... things that say they save to the sdcard on this seem to save to /mnt/sdcard on the Atrix (not sdcard-ext)... which is actually the internal memory of the phone, not the removable sdcard (AFAICT).
Any chance anyone can help with this? Or do I have to just try to back up what I can, reflash to 1.26, root, "beforeupdate", update to 1.57, "after update", 1.83, gingerbreak, and hope for the best?
Any help is appreciated. Very valuable help will be rewarded with beer donations, etc.
Thanks in advance.

This question is being asked allot lately. You kind of answered it yourself in a literal way: As far as your phone is concerned, you are transferring the files to sd. Your not using the apps2extsd app (because it doesn't exist afaik). I know thats only one part of your question, hope you get the answers you need.

Right ... and the point of this is that if I remove my (physical) SD Card to preserve my files, it won't actually do anything because it's the INTERNAL memory that has my files/databases/etc.
Again, there's a bounty on solving this problem for me ... hopefully people look at this thread

I think you missed the point. Apps2sd is not to "preserve" anything, but for phones lacking enough memory to install the apps users want. We are lucky with the Atrix. We will probably never fill it up to the point we cant install anymore apps, but other phones have that problem. This is the purpose of apps2sd. If you want preservation use TiBU. Again I know this was only part of your question and wish you luck in finding the solutions you need.

Yeah, I have/use TiBU (PRO) ... what I am not sure of is:
1. If I flash the 1.26 sbf to my phone, will the TiBU backups get deleted from my internal memory? Or do I need to save them to my PC first (will probably do this anyway).
2. If I later reinstall from my TiBU backups, will all my saved games, program databases, etc, also be imported back onto the phone?
3. Are there other files that I need that I'd want to back up, but I won't be able to because I don't really have root?
4. How can I be certain that I actually have root access, and not some half-assed root access that Moto/ATT let me have while hiding full system access?
5. Why can I no longer mount my /system folder as r/w, along with not being able to see /system/data?
That's all, I think.
Thanks.
Best,

Back them up to your PC. SBF shouldn't clear your external/internal SD card, but most will wipe /data/ partition which contains all of the app settings and data.
They should be, yes.
Anything you can backup, you should. I'm not sure what you mean by you "don't really have root." Check for Superuser in your app drawer. If it's not there, install it. Gingerbreak/Gingerblur delete a LOT of stuff when you use them. I personally avoid them for this very reason.
There's no such thing as "half-assed root access." You either have it, or you don't. Make sure the su binary is in /system/bin and that you have Superuser.apk installed and listed in your app drawer.
What error messages is it giving you when you try?

2. That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure.
3. I have Superuser, and TiBU and RootEx both think they have root.
4. See #3; however, I couldn't do some stuff I wanted to (like edit /system/etc/hosts. Also, i figured out why i couldn't find "/system/data/" ... because I'm an idiot and i should've been looking for /data/system/ !)
5. Well, now it's working. Very Strange. RootEx force closed on me, and when it reopened it's now working.

Sometimes TiBu and RootExplorer need to be restarted for root to take place. I'd say at this point (If you haven't already.), give your phone a reboot. That might smooth any other issues out.

Look for the service SBF for 1.83. There's two versions, one that wipes /data and one that doesn't. If you use the one that doesn't (I have SEVERAL times), you should be good to go.

I think that's the same one, but just to be safe use this one here: http://gititbit.ch/sbf7
EDIT: bookmark http://gitbrew.org/atrix has pretty much everything all in one place
I keep getting this annoying pop-up message at boot about moving data to the external SD card. When I looked into this the solution is to...
"in root explorer, go into /data/sdcard/
either move all files inside this folder to your /sdcard/ folder (the one not inside /data), or delete them entirely."
However, this will work for a week or so but then the message will return and I will have to repeat the previous process. It's not that big of a deal, but, it is annoying. Especially since I have no room on my External SD anyways... Does anybody know how to permanently solve this issue?
No one...?
hmm odd, i haven't seen this issue myself. wish i had an answer for yah
I have that issue but didnt know the (temp) fix until now. Thanks.
I am just having this issue on Huawei Ideos X5 (u8800).
I don't have an external sd card and I think it WANTS me to have one and somehow is confused...
This hasn't happened to me in a while. But when it did I usually did 1 of 2 things...
1. Try the steps for the temp. fix above in the OP.
2. Just click "yes" when the popup occurs. I've found it actually doesn't put a single thing on the external SD card.

That used to happen to me alot! It was almost like everytime the phone rebooted or anytime I disconnected it from my PC if I had been transferring files. I think at the time I was running the MIUI "SS" or "ReVaMpEd" ROMs from 360. Ever since I flashed the MIUI-SGSII 360 ROM, I haven't seen that again. I never found a fix when I saw it usually I just ignored it, it was more of an inconvenience than anything.
Good luck!

I guess it has something to do with mount instructions given from rom.
I tried putting # in front of ro.etc etc etc *stuff*.additional.mounts=/mnt/emmc but same thing happens.
sd message
Hi, i have a huawei u8800 and was getting this message, i fixed it by removing all the files from my internal sd card(which i do not use) - /mnt/emmc
it has not come back yet
^ Hmmm, thats interesting. Never tried that method... Lol. I'm supprised people still are even having this issue though. I haven't had it in ages... or 4 months... Anyways the solution I put in the OP works to solve it and I found another method that I put in the FAQ of my miui guide (link in signature and it's stickied in the Q&A of the Vibrant forum). But never heard one about deleting the emmc folder.

==== Update 20120215 ==========
It seems Galaxy Note also has this problem.
jager13 has posted this issue in code.google.com, so please anyone with this issue comment there so that google devs can know about it and fix it!
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=25563
==========================
I believe that many of us (if not all) should have this problem.
I got so many apps installed, so many of them are installed in SD Card automatically by Android or I manually moved them to SD Card.
(In total I have ~650 app elements in Titanium Backup and keep growing depending on what I have installed or haven't restored at any given point)
The problem is since I updated from 2.3.4 to version >= 2.3.5 even to ICS 4.0.3 LP2, LP6, LPB, LPH.
Problem:
- Power On then phone will reboot after some 2-5 minutes idle and again reboot infinitely so I cannot use my phone at all.
- If I removed my external SD Card, no more reboot.
- Or if I delete some amount of .asec files in ".android_secure" folder (where the app in sd card is saved) in the external SD Card no more reboot.
- And yes, I have done many (if not all) imaginable things: re-flash, factory reset, wipe cache, fix permission, change SD Card, reinstall from market...
- And no, this is not specific SD Card problem.
There is older thread talking about this problem but the thread is about general reboot problem so it got mixed with other kind of reboot.
After trying ICS leaks in a hope that the problem is fixed I find that it is still NOT fixed
and maybe won't be fixed if not enough people complain about this problem.
And I think Samsung developers and QA don't know this issue.
It will be shame if SGS3 still has this problem. I absolutely won't buy it.
So to check this, I hope the reader of this thread to try this (Samsung based ROM > 2.3.4 only):
- Please move as many apps as you can or all of your apps to SD Card..
- Or please install as many apps as you can from market and moved them to SD Card if not already.
- The apps number is not exact (60 maybe more), more is better, maybe related with apps size too.
(I found that when my ".android_secure" folder size in external sd card approaching ~1.5GB maybe more, the reboot problem occurs)
- And then tell here that you have infinite reboot or not in idle mode 2-5 minutes after power on. Please try 2-3 times.
- Also post your ROM/kernel version, stock or mods.
- And please check that removing the external SD Card solve the reboot problem.
Remember that u have to be at least Samsung based ROM version 2.3.5 because this problem is side effect (2.3.4 and earlier does not have this problem).
For us who has this problem, please add your post to this thread to keep it alive
and don't forget to rate high so it will get attention from other users and hopefully from Samsung.
Let's make this issue known to Samsung.
And I hope that people who got firmware leaks from Samsung can tell them about this problem/thread.

Are u using Samsung based ROM > 2.3.4?
I have this bad problem. I posted about this problem on old topics and how to remove this problem by return to old firmware with android 2.3.4.
Thank you for opening this thread because It is I think a general problem and the big problem that its happened with ICS. I tried and tried to solve this problem without success but I found that this problem start faster after transfer small size apps.
This problem must be solved, because we need to transfer apps to SD card.
Thanks again dragon135

I have had the same problem with the following Samsung Android versions:
2.3.5
2.3.6
I have a SGH-I777 (AT&T Galaxy S II).
I have tried several class 4 and a new class 10 made by Samsung. Same results.
After using App2SD and after moving several apps to SD, the device will eventually reboot right after the SD scan completes.
Removing the SD is the only way to fix this. You can reformat the SD card but the problem will eventually occur when you move several apps to the SD card again. I have been unable to identify a particular app that triggers this reboot.
i have the same problem with my lg o2x. no solution??
exactly the same issue with my Captivate
I moved more than 100 APPs to SD recently. It worked fine with Froyo. The only problem I had is the icon disappearing issue. After switching to GO launcher, everything worked fine. Today I upgrade my phone to GB (KK4, 2.3.5), and started to have the same problem. I have to unmount my SD card to keep my phone away from rebooting. With my wife's card, only data on it, my phone had no issue. Once I put my card back, it starts again.
I can confirm. This issue exists and NOT just samsung firmware. i had the same issue running MIUI. When there are too many apps (my count is 264 apps) the phone will boot, the back of the phone will get really hot and then within 2-3 minutes of booting reboot again to the same unlock or home page screen. And it will keep doing it until your battery is dead. it also drains the battery like crazy!!!
Seriously wtf?
Is there a way to move those APPs back to phone? This is really annoying.

yes, just cut some .asec-files (as many as it needs) from the .android_secure folder an paste them into another folder, so that the phone won´t reboot anymore.
the apps according to the .asec files now won´t be shown in appdrawer.
than you install gemini app manager and move the smallest (if you have not much space on phone) or just some other apps you want back to phonememory. after that you can put the .asec files back in to the android_secure folder, so that those apps appear again in app drawer.
if phone still reboots: same precedure.
like others wrote, and my own experience: abourt 50 files in android_secure folder is ok, more: reboots.
or if you have backups from your apps in titanium:
put sd card in pc. delete all the small asec files, so that in android_secure folder remain only the biggest files. and not more than 50 files.
better only 40. than your phone should work again and you can restore those small apps with titanium, but before that, you tell titanium only to restore into internal memory.
this helps for me. but i really wouldlike to be able to install more apps an sd card! nobody??

As requested I also have this issue.
Seriously considering the downgrade to 2.3.4 despite the aggravation it will cause me.
I transfered all of them to my laptop first and then moved them back ~20 APPs at a time. But then I got the 'phone storage space is getting low' error. Trying to fix it eventually led to a 'factory reset'. I don't have backup for all of the APPs. Without all those junks the phone was very smooth and stable. Once I restored a few APPs and moved them to SD card, I was hit by random shut-down issue but no reboot yet. Finally I figured out why my phone went to sleep almost every night with me. LOL. It happened just after I moved most of my APPs to SD. WTF.
I was thinking about this earlier. I have three ROMs I shuffle via nandroid backup/restore (why? Because I'm a little crazy and kinda drift between them, and because I can), and I was reading a beginner's primer on Linux, where they said everything is a file. Your system partition is just a file (folder), data is just a file (folder) and so on. Meanwhile, I spent 3-7 minutes backing up or restoring GB or JB ROMs. Back one up, restore another, then delete the one I restored... Why not have a bootloader that lets you choose which ROM, and then rename the directories accordingly? That is, I'd have a System.motoblur folder, a System.CM7 folder, and a System.AOKP folder, and upon boot, it would drop the period and everything after, and then reboot (and ditto for data and cache).
Is there a good reason why something like this wouldn't work? You might say lack of demand, and I would be inclined to agree, but if you limited the idea to just "data", then you'd have a user switcher, and it would work with Gingerbread and prior (well, any device with an unlocked bootloader and internal memory to spare). Right? Or... no?

there is Boot Manager/Boot Manager Pro on Play store. Not sure if your device is supported but I used to use it when I had the Desire HD and I was quad booting. however I do think that dual-booting is way overlooked.
Hi, I'm in desperate need of help, please.
I'm using SGS2. Several months ago my device suddenly started acting weird, thumbnails in gallery didn't load, apps didn't refresh (instagram, facebook etc.)... Rebooting would help but only for a certain amount of time, until it suddenly started to happen again. I realised the internal SD card simply becomes read-only randomly, but I didn't know why. I made peace with it since I'm not a big smartphone user.
Anyhow, today I went through my phone files and saw that several cache folders were oddly big, so I deleted a ****load of files, and then(!!) that one folder would not delete... So I clicked it and saw a bunch of gibberish files that do not want to get deleted.
I tried SD Maid app, but the thing is, once I browse to that specific corrupt folder the SD card goes crazy and becomes read-only, so basically at that moment I realised that folder is what's making the phone act like this.
Connecting it to PC and deleting doesn't work either. Renaming the files doesn't work. Copy/paste does work but is useless. Factory reset/installing new ROM/kernel/whatever doesn't work either. The files will still be there, I've tried.
Anything, please?

Hi, I'm in desperate need of help, please.
I'm using SGS2. Several months ago my device suddenly started acting weird, thumbnails in gallery didn't load, apps didn't refresh (instagram, facebook etc.)... Rebooting would help but only for a certain amount of time, until it suddenly started to happen again. I realised the internal SD card simply becomes read-only randomly, but I didn't know why. I made peace with it since I'm not a big smartphone user.

What rom were you using when the errors started happening?
What have you tried as far as flashing roms/kernels/custom recoveries?
I'm using Omega v24 XWLSW (4.1.2). What I did was factory reset and every single format option in that CWM recovery screen. I then flashed that same ROM again but fresh.
I don't think this has anything to do with ROM/kernels etc. This is simply a bunch of corrupt files in Device\sdcard\Android. I've tried googling with no success. I need a way to forcibly delete that folder with all those files inside. Any directions on how format?

The first thing I would try is to reinstall a stock samsung rom. This sometimes is the only way to fully reset your phone back to original condition. Sammobile.com is the website I have used. You would have to root again but....

There are some similarities with possible corrupt partitions another guy has(the last few pages of thread), that they are trouble-shooting. You might find some answers there.

Hey mate.
If you haven't fixed the problem i recommend performing a checkdisk.
To perform a checkdisk you need to:
1. Connect your phone through USB via mass storage mode.
2. The computer should prompt you to perform a checkdisk automatically, in that case just accept and let the computer perform it. If it doesn't prompt automatically you need to do it manully by right-clicking the correct partition on the computer, click properties and then on the 'Tools' bar. Now mine is in Swedish, i don't know how it is in english but press the button on the first alternative. (i.e the button with 'Control' and the administrator logo).
After pressing, just let it be (it will take quite a while) and when finished.. tell me if it worked or not.
Good luck!
Hey, I tried chkdsk and defrag just in case, the files are still there, although some of them are now gone. My phone doesn't go crazy anymore though, which is nice. Maybe I'll just let the corrupt files be there in peace, they won the war XD And as long as my phone works properly I don't really care about them.
Thanks everyone!
