After all the ROMs and themes I have flashed I should know the answer to this. After I flash the .zip I get the screen with 4 options, the first being 'apply sdcard:update.zip'. Am I supposed to choose this option then reboot or back out to reboot? What is this option for? I assumed since this is the next screen that I was supposed to apply, which I have done each time. I've wondered this before but never asked.
Your in the standard Android recovery. The apply update.zip should take you to Clockworkmod recovery.
I'm in red recovery. After I install the .zip the next screen has apply update. I can either choose apply zip or hit the menu softkey to back out to the main recovery screen and choose reboot system now. I've done it both ways and seen no difference, but which is right?
Press the menu button to bring you back to the main menu in cwm. Then the option to reboot will be at the top of the list.

So just don't use any of those four options right? Just back out and reboot?
Correct.

I cannot use ROM Manager to preform a backup. When I select "Backup Current ROM" it reboots, goes to recovery starts "backing up" and doesn't do anything. I waited there for 20 minutes and it didn't move. Took out the battery and tried again. Same deal.
Any help?

Odd. I don't see an actual "nandroid" to select. Can you elaborate?

Yep, rom manager and clockwork recovery are 2 different things packaged together. Look at the top 2 options in rom manager. First, click flash clockworkmod recovery and choose vibrant. Once done click reboot into recovery. If you see your normal recovery screen thats ok. Click reinstall packages and you will be taken to clockwork recovery and see the nandroid menu. Volume keys for up and down. Power key to select.

Also, one thing to keep in mind, this puts an update.zip in the root of your sdcard.(internal) keep it there. Never remove it. If you need to flash a different zip file like you may have done to root it, use clockwork recovery. There is an option to choose the zip you want to flash without renaming the file to update.zip. The reason being is if you move or delete the update.zip from your root, if something does go wrong you will not be able to get to clockwork recovery by reinstalling packages in your normal recovery screen to restore the backup you will have made.

ok si i have a similar issue, i rooted fine, i installed rom manager i did the clowork download for the vibrant but when i click boot into recovery it says installing package or whatever but then it says it couldnt verify signature and then yeah it fails and reboots. its never happened to me before, i tried to factory reset, unroot and try from fresh but still no go
So maybe its just me, but I'm not able to get into Recovery when trying to flash something. For example, flashing a better modem into Obsidian hasn't been working for me, or at least I haven't noticed. Nor have I been able to flash the Gingerbread keyboard without having to push it to the system using Root Explorer.
Is there a trick to getting into Recovery using Froyo, or is there somthing I'm doing wrong. I normally use ROM Manager to get into Recovery or even the options in the power menu and nothing works. Just the Samsung recovery mode.
Hold volume updown and push power button untill u see the vibrant screen then let go of power only and if your only getting the samsung recovery then reinstall package u might have to twice

Make sure update.zip for rom manager is in on internal sd and then reboot into recovery and reinstall packages if it goes back to stock recovery reinstall packages again then you should be in Cwr

I'm rooted with CWM installed but when I boot into recovery, I don't have any option to backup/restore. It's the light blue recovery menu and I'm booting by holding down the vol buttons while pressing power and then letting go of power when the boot screen logo appears.
[EDIT] Apparently something got hosed with the install of the CWM recovery kernel. Reinstall fixed it.
Any ideas what I'm missing? Would really like to make a backup in addition to Titanium Backup before I start tweaking, etc.
Are the clockwork recovery extra options listed on the list? Should have like advanced and backup/restore etc. if you don't have those options fROM the recovery menu then cwm recovery didn't flash correctly.
Fyi works on mine I have cwm, root and a backup from the recovery menu

Yeah I figured it out like 2 minutes before you posted that. And yeah none of those options were there, it was really odd. Simply figured maybe something didn't happen right with the kernel flash. Appreciate the response
Hey guys, I recently rooted my phone and flashed clockworkmod, I noticed it wasn't working properly when it was only giving me blank screens when I made selections. Well I attempted a nandroid back up from the rom manager app and something strange happened, now I can ONLY boot into the faulty recovery image. As flashing a rom from this image is not an option is there anything I can do to get a rom up and running? I can still boot into download mode if that helps.

I had the same problem when I first flashed cwm. The button mappings are changed in the newer cwm. You have to use the soft keys in the bottom of the phone to make selection. Hone button is to select, not the power key.
To fix it, just power off, go back into download mode and flash the cwm kernel again, they did it for me.

Hello all
I am having a small issue with GTab
I can reboot into recovery every time from the power and volume+ combination, but sometime will not reboot if I go to the menu and reboot (power-off) menu, or if I go into CWM ROM Manger and reboot to recovery. sometimes I get the in and other time just reboots everything comes up. just like rebooting from the menu at time quicker..
I am running CWM v.8 Vegtab 7.1.0
now I believe this start after I flashed from CWM ROM Manger the a version CWM .. can remember the version (sorry ) screen was Orange and had the logo CWM in the center.. this is when I noticed the problem, then I reflashed back to V.8 thinking that would fix the problem and it did not.
I hoping this make sense I know it not world stopping or fun stopping, but it is a pain..
hoping someone had seen this problem before.. and could give me some direction to look at
Jim
1. Using the Power and Vol + key is the recommended method to boot into recovery. Avoid using the other methods.
2. Uninstall ROM Manager. It works fine on phones, but, is known to cause problems on the gTab.
3. Make sure both your ROM and your CWM are built for your bootloader (1.1 or 1.2). Since you said you have VEGAn-Tab 7.1.0, you can find out the version of your bootloader using the info. in this thread.
Suggestions:
1. Copy the zip file in post #3 of this thread to the SD card and then "install" it (once) using CWM.
2. If you're on a 1.1 bootloader, these CWM versions are available: CWM-2.5.1.1-bekit-0.8 and CWM-4.0.1.5
If you have the 1.2 bootloader install one of these CWM versions: CWM-3.0.2.8 or CWM-4.0.1.5. All are available on this board. Do a search.
thanks rajeevvp
I am using bootloader 1.1
every step worked great.. you are cool android person..
went with CWM-2.5.1.1-bekit-0.8 since that what I had in the first place
Are there any pluses going to CWM-4.0.1.5?
thanks for your help again..

I like that it tries to use the external SD card first and only then falls back to using the internal one for backups, restores and update.zip installs. Other than that and the new menu colours, there aren't a lot of externally visible differences.
More info. in this thread.
rajeevvp,
thanks for the information.. about version of CWM.. I think I found the one that will not work with the reboot menu "power off" menu.. I have installed CWM-4.0.1.5 and tried the menu option and also running GScript to reboot in recovery mode and will not do it all the time with 4.0.1.5.
what happen is that is just boots normal, which is not a bad thing.
and I know you do not like the idea of going into recovery mode without doing the power and volume + method.
just thought you would like to know what I found out.
thanks again for all your help..
Now if I want to go back to bekit-0.8 would you I need to do the erase misc like I did before?

I didn't understand this. Are you saying that CWM-4.0.1.5 does not do "Reboot recovery" correctly everytime? And the ROM also? Both should usually work (but, I don't recommend it) on the 1.1 bootloader.

No need. Erase misc only if you get stuck on the 3 birds or if you go into a reboots-into-recovery loop--both of which are unlikely given your CWM (bekit-0.8 or 4.0.1.5) and bootloader (1.1) versions.
rajeevvp,
Sorry for the late Reply..
only it I use Gscript reboot to recovery, Menu from the shutdown .. Select reboot and then either reboot or reboot recovery.. if I am using CWM-4.0.1.5 with VegenTab 7.1.0
I can always go in to recovery mode from the volume and power button combination.
using bekit-0.8 I can get it to reboot into recovery from anywhere..
yes, I thought it was werid too..
thanks for all your help
Jim
I don't recommend doing "Reboot to recovery" using any tool--GScript, the ROM option, or the CWM menu item. Your tablet may "hang" at the 3 birds splash screen or go into a "always-reboot-into-recovery" boot loop.
