When I had my jailbroken iphone there is two apps that do the same thing one is called My3g and the other is called 3g unrestricter and what they do is make your internet apps think they are on wifi which allowed some apps that would only work on wifi work on 3g service so my question is there anything out there like that for Android???
I can't believe nobody has any ideas or suggestions
So I know this is very general and vague question, why doesn't my tethering work. Here's the background of how I got here.
One of the first things I did when I got the Atrix back before the boot-loader was unlocked was root the phone, install GingerBlur (Kenneth Penn's Pseudo-ROM) and some APN mods to enable tethering. It's been a while, so I can't remember exactly how I did it...but I think all I had to do was switch APN's from 'phone' to 'tether' and then start mobile hotspot.
Since then I've flashed too many ROM's and themes and radios to count, but right now I'm back to KP's Alien build #4 (ROM only, not theme) and Shady's Arctic Blue theme if this matters, along with the unlocked boot-loader of course.
So I went to tether and didn't have a 'tether' APN. I downloaded a .zip file of APN's and restored them with APN manager. Now my laptop and netbook will connect to Atrix, but no data will be transferred. I searched all the tethering threads on Xda and have tried it all, including a few 3rd party apps for wifi tethering...but I'm stuck.
Sorry for the long explanation, but maybe someone has run into this same thing. I can get the hotspot, and 3rd party apps to connect...but no data will be passed to laptop. Also sometimes I get a 'limited connectivity' message from my network adapter icon on laptop.
Anyone see where I've messed up? I had it working perfectly before I unlocked boot-loader and moved to 2.3.4.
Thanks for any help.
Use the Wifi Tether app.
Or just root and unlock bootloader and run hotspot patch with the nifty dos program our development made that does everything for you.

Hi, so I'm currently using an unlocked Samsung i777 outside the US. I'm loving this phone except for the fact that wifi tethering is not working. Every time I try to enable it, it says mobile data not available or invalid sim.
I can use my sim's 3G/HSDPA connecton just fine and my sim has a data plan and I can even use tethering on other mobile phones so I'm assuming that AT&T locked down the wifi tethering or something. How can I make it work preferably without rooting since I managed to unlock this ohome without root?
If I do need to root, well what are the apps that I need to make wifi hotspot work? Thanks.

You need to root, and you actually need to REMOVE an app (TetheringManager2.apk) to make it work.
It's AT&T's bigbrotherware
I hope you're using a local Sim and not planning on tethering while roaming, that would be a heart attack inducing bill waiting for you when you come home!!

I have same problem. But i can not find app TetheringManager2.ark in system/app. Can you tell what i should do? Thanks.
cannot tether after rooting and renamed TetheringManager2.apk
the file is there... i am in the same boat as you are. i bought an used i777.
you need to root the phone first, personally, i used Root Manager and located the file and renamed it (instead of deleting it)
BUT.. i still cannot tether :-( still getting the mobile data is not available or invalid SIM.
can anyone offer some insight to this issue ?

i tried to rename the file to something else, but did not get tethering to work.
i was mad and DELETED the file i renamed altogether and u know what - tethering works !
so i guess you will have to root the phone, DELETE the file, then you can get tethering to work.
have fun.
In the op it states she does not have root. Therefor what she wants to do is not possible. U need root to access the file she needs to remove.

UCLE5 remove the tetheringmanager.apk,is not work,open the wifi hostpot,setting is FC,why?
remove tether provisional app wifi hotspot still do not work EDIT:hotspot now work
hello everyone,
as the title shows I have remove the tether provision app with super manager as I can't find the tethering manager apk stated on this thread. Maybe it is on the stock GB rom I'am running stock ICS rom rooted and running on latest siyah kernel. When I tried to open wifi hotspot it just sits there unresponsive for several seconds then says "settings application stop working". I am on vacation here in the Philippines and using the local sim cards available here I have data on my phone but I can't share it on my other devices as the wifi hotspot is not functioning. I have searched several sites and install several root tethering apps to no avail. Any guide or help is greatly appreciated. Thnx
edit: I have now a functional wifi hotspot. I have downloaded FoxFi App from the market and it works. I have installed uninstalled reinstalled this app several times before but hangs and force closes upon activating the wifi hotspot. I have uninstalled the tether provision app on the root folder with Root Uninstaller as stated above. I don't know if it helps but when reinstalling the FoxFi App again, wifi hotspot on my phone now works. Though I just want to share as me myself badly needed this as my phone is not that big enough on surfing the net. Activating the phones native wifi hotspot is pretty sweet though.
2nd Edit: Though I just want to make it simple and share for everyone to know how do I make my wifi hotstpot work on stock at&t ics rom. This is a very simple step to make and works only if you are rooted. I am not responsible if you do something wrong with your phone. This do works for me..This is a guideline only for anyone wanting to have a wifi hotspot tethering on their phone as in my case running on stock at&t ics.
1. Download and install Unistaller Root app (or any root file manager app) and FoxFi tethering app ( other app may also work) from the google play market.
2. Open Uninstaller Root App and allow it SU permission then open system apps.
3. Navigate thru it and uninstall tethering provision apk.
4. Open FoxFi Tethering app , wifi hotspot should now work. Enjoy..... Do not use the native wifi hotspot from your phone as it will not work.
FYI: As in my case FoxFi will not work if you still have the Tethering Provision Apk in your phone it will just hang and forced closes when opening the app.
Hope anybody running Stock ICS will find this useful. Have a Great day....
How can I grant "SU" permission to the app?
My phone is not rooted but unlocked.
I am deadly in need of tethering. Please help me out. Thanks.

You must be rooted to obtain su permission. Also, if your signature is correct, you are in the wrong forum. This is the forum for Galaxy S2, and you have the S3.
I have an HTC Vivid running Gingerbread 2.3.4. I see that in other versions I can edit the build.prop to bypass AT&T's tethering block, but none of the language in my file read anything close to the previous files.
The device is rooted and I have an editor. I also have downloaded apps that tether (and work, currently) but they only tether through wifi and I'd like to bypass it all together so that I can connect via USB, wifi or BT.
Anyone figured this out yet?

Try clockworkmod tethering app.
How
How do you have the wifi tether working? I am rooted also and I've tried tons and tons of wifi tether apps such as barnacle and wifi tether. Neither work. To answer your question though, easy tether products works fine for us tethering. I would be very greatly if you could help me wifi tether. You don't pay for it do you?
Ummmmm, nevermind lol. I just read another post that had the property settings for android wifi tether. I'm super happy now. I've been trying to this forever!
Thanks xda!
I have a sgh-t399n (samsung galaxy light) running stock rooted/busybox/xposed
I also have a couple lg motions (all are rooted/busybox/xposed) some on stock 4.0.4 and some have cm11
Im a metro pcs user and all are native metro. Phones.
I want to tether. I don't have internet where I am outside of my phone so I wanna activate a phone on the 60dollar unlimited plan and use it as my personal wifi hotspot
I hear its possible to get around the metro restriction at a system level. Something about decompling and recompiling the system framework res apk or something like that and editing a string or two of code.
Anyone know anything about that?
Alternatively....I noticed that even though both of my motions aren't active on a network the metro stock rom motion still prompts me to sign up for the service (to tether) at metro I noticed my motion running cm11 doesn't prompt me to sign up for tethering. It simply connects but obviously it has no data to share since its not active on any networks.
If I activate the motion should it allow me to tether since it didnt give problems when I tried before activating it? Im referring to the one running cm11 not stock
And if not then help bypassing at a system level on would be greatly appreciated.
I figure this is the best place for this.
