please note: i do not own an optimus v. i've only had the pleasure of rooting one.
if you follow the directions for ROM Tools, it will give you what you need.
using SuperOneClick... press the button that says "shell root".
after obtaining shell root...
Run the application Z4root.
neither of these programs work by themselves but in this combo, this should root your optimus v. it will be up to you to flash recovery and whatnot.
you are welcome.
Awesome. Thank you.

I rooted my optimus v about three or four days ago just by using SuperOneClick 1.6.5. Once the phones drivers were installed, I clicked the root button and waited. That's all it took.
With Z4 Root, should I pick temporary or permanent root? it crashes with both, currently
when i run one click it says it ran a su successfully but i dont have root.
i used superoneclick and it crashed but 'adb shell' gave a root prompt. then i pushed 'su' and 'busybox' binaries. voila.

My phone was rooted a month ago using superoneclick. Then, three days ago, i unrooted it to update my phone to get the multi-touch function. Now, i tried every possible rooting method, including z4root, universal androot, superoneclick etc. When i use superoneclick, it keeps showing "Device has temporary ADB root, Reboot to remove it". I rebooted many times and tried again but it keeps showing it.

Use updated flashtool (0.2.6) in dev section.
I have just bought a replacement Optimus V from Bestbuy. I have previously rooted my old Optimus V bought in August with the latest zergRush. Unfortunately, my replacement will not root with any method I have tried. zergRush does not automatically restart adb and any attempts to log in with adb are met with error: closed. Fastboot is locked, of course.
A person with the same problems and conclusion is here:

Is this phone truly unrootable right now?
If so, is this the only unrootable Android phone currently?
If so, what are the chances the Motorola Triumph will be patched this way? I wanted to exchange for one but not if it is going to be locked up too.
Which Android version is it? I think you could use KDZ to downgrade the version and then root it.
Of course first try these methods: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15309588&postcount=2
Just got my wife a new optimus v and rooted it with Gingerbreak v1.20 with no prob. Most likely has new screen so needs recovery and rom with kernel compatible with new screen
Need to have sdcard in phone and USB debug turned on for gingerbreak to work properly.

Got an Optimus V earlier this month, one of the ones with the newer Optimus S screens. Had no problems rooting it with gingerbreak.
Did you try gingerbreak again if it failed? It took quite a while to finish on mine (upwards of 12 mins.)
Sorry for the delay. I ran into a lot of problems compiling.
This one is running 2.2.2 like the last one. The last one was successful with zergRush though.
There is no official firmware available for the phone so I do not think KDZ can be used.
z4root - I don't know how to compile this.
I can build the shared libraries easily enough, but when it comes time to build the apk I get errors in Eclipse. I have never used Eclipse before. I installed the ADT plugin of course. I get similar errors with ant (after creating build.xml and local.properties) which I have used successfully before. The error is "method does not override a method from its superclass".
zergRush - gives "error: closed"
psneuter - gives "error: closed"
gingerbreak
gingerbreak exploit - gives "couldn't open output file". I tried several times with and without sd card.
gingerbreak apk - no source? Is the only solution to decompile the apk?
superoneclick - no source?
rageagainstthecage - no source?
Thanks for any help.
Edit:
Success! I was able to get a version of gingerbreak to work. Thanks for the input.
which version of gingerbreak worked with froyo 2.2.2
SeWhnt from my LG-MS690 using XDA App
zergRush worked on 2.2.2 with my first V. I had to use this version of gingerbreak on my second V with 2.2.2. I never tried the apks that are floating around.
I downloaded the gingerbreak v1.20 apk from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765 , transfered to root of sdcard and installed with easy installer. Have to check to allow installation from unknown sources under settings - applications and turn on usb debug mode under settings - applications - development before running. Then just run gingerbreak from your app drawer and select root.
^ That's the method I used. I personally think it's the easiest way.
I am trying to root my xperia x10 mini pro using z4root. It completes the process and returns to the app drawer(It doesn't say anything, successful or not). However when I try to install busybox it says ı don't have root access. Why does it do this? Any other methof to have root and CWM access.
I am using a guide I found here. It says first install z4root and root the phone and then install busybox ( then fileman etc.) however I cannot root it with that application.
Version 2.1.1a.0.6
Z4root doesn't work on the Pro anymore. Have a look in the Development section, there are plenty of tools that will do this for you.

z4root has been dead since nov. superoneclick is the way to go
Hi, sorry I have really tried before asking, I am at a complete loss as to what to do.
I have used HTC Desire X All-In-One Toolkit V2.0 [1-1-2013] from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943822
I unlocked the bootloader, and the boot menu shows the phone as 'unlocked'.
I then tried running permroot, which installed superuser, but when I try to check if my phone is rooted, (Using droidwall : I am trying to enable the firewall).
I get the message that I need a rooted phone to run droidwall .
and 'if this phone is already rooted make sure droidwall has enough permissions to execute the 'su' command'.
How do I know if my phone is rooted?
Thanks - this has been most frustrating, my backspace key has also bombed out. haha
Hello,
Try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck&hl=en download it from the store and run it it will say is your phone rooted or not.

You should have a su binary residing in /system/bin/ and some sort of control app in your app drawer (probably Superuser). If you don't have these then you aren't rooted.
If you have them, an easy way to test is to use a terminal app , type 'su' and the control app should pop up asking if you want to give root privileges to terminal.
If you are having trouble getting root to work using the toolkit, try doing it manually by following nloooo's tutorial.
Ok, you all forgot about flashing recovery first.
Having a ridiculous amount of issues rooting the Hydro Life C6530N running Android 4.3. I have ADB and Kyocera drivers installed, I've attempted to use RootGenius 1.8.7, it restarts the phone a couple times, has a progress bar, and the final screen says Such a tough phone! Root...failed... Ok so then I attempted the Root with Restore by Bin4ry v36; followed it step by step, slowly, carefully, using option 3 in the shell which is the Standard-Root, as none of the other options seem to apply to the C6530N. Looks as though it's going to complete, reboots a couple times, and then says After reboot all is done! Have fun!, ok cool, but the root checker app says the phone is not rooted, super su and busybox also confirm this. Does anyone know a third method to rooting this phone? Or is mine just the black sheep, because I see other people having success with rooting this beast.
Thanks!
Kyngo
This is what I did, download kingo superuser app, and kingo root, also turn on USB debugging, don't forget rootchker basic. Install kingo su, then kingo root, both can be found in playstore, run rootchker and done, I've installed busybox, flashify, from toolbox pro,rom manager premium, working great.
