[Q] TB constantly rebooting. - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know what has happened, but the last two days my TB has just started randomly rebooting. I'm unrooted. It first did a random reboot after using GPS, then it has done it twice today without GPS being on, then the third time was when I started up GPS to use my speedo app, then the last time it was just sitting on the arm of my recliner and it just rebooted again. this time no GPS. It has just started in the last two days, so I was wondering if anybody else that is unrooted was experiencing the same issues?
Apparently there is another thread, I'm really sorry about. The title was a little misleading. Please merge mods.

Did you just update google maps?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App

No, it's currently waiting to be updated.

I'm having similar issues. I'm also having GPS issues. It takes a LONG time for the GPS to locate and my weather is often showing Brooklyn, NY. I'm in Washington state.
Dan

I started having GPS issues last week. (really the first time I had used it since getting the phone.

[Q] Google Maps keeps locking up phone.

Hello folks,
In the last week google maps has gone from only having the requisite (for this phone) slow to no gps issues to freezing the phone, causing it to reboot as soon as I do almost anything in maps. This was constant in v4.4 (which I updated to last week), so I downgraded to previous version, 4.0. This appeared to work better for about 3 whole minutes, and then promptly caused the phone to **** its britches. Have any of you folks experienced this issue? The phone hasn't been rooted (I figure I'll wait and see what's what with 2.2) and besides the stereotypical random lagging nothing else causes the phone to lock up and die the way Maps does. Is it the app? the dodgy gps? I didn't spend this much on a phone to not be able to use all of its features, so any help is appreciated.
Cheers,
Dennis
Mine sometimes locks up if I leave gps on. I leave it off and turn it on when it loads up fully

I'll have to try that out. I have gps set to come on when maps fires up. It just irks me that I would have to remember to do such silliness on such an otherwise very nice phone. I hope Samsung gets their stuff sorted on this gps issue., and fast. Lets hope september being when the fix comes isn't just smoke.

I'm getting the same issue. GPS and maps worked once for me after doing the quick fix. Since then i have updated the Maps and now opening it freezes the phone. Literally everything comes to an halt and renders my poor Vibrant useless till I pull the battery. Not a life altering problem but i do hope i can resolve it soon in case I might need to use it.

I turned off GPS and that seems to be the culprit. I even went back to using maps v 4.4 and it hasn't puked yet. I'm definitely tired of this dodgy gps thing.

[Q] Atrix reboots are killing me.

My Atrix has rebooted itself at least 6 times today. Once while I was trying to post this. How do I make it stop? This sucks.
I tried to search the forum but couldn't do it from my phone. Go figure.
Take it back? Software restore? I haven't had a single random reboot

No one has really figured out what is causing the reboots. What do you have installed/Mods. One theory is if you have some after market task killer (ATK - Advanced Task Killer) it might be killing the OS causing your phone to reboot, again thats only one theory.

Right out of the box. Not rooted (yet) or anything. I notice that the task manager on this phone lets apps run wild unlike my "old" Droid 2. I have a hot phone with sub par battery life. I am wondering if I have a memory leak somewhere.
I have noticed apps like Pandora tend to lock up as a widget but continue to burn through memory. I am hoping for a system update soon.

I also have not had my Atrix reboot on it's own. You can try to hard reset your phone and not reload your apps to see if it's one of your apps causing the problem. But I bet you will have to get a replacement phone.
One thing that has started happening to me is when I used the speedtest.net app it'll run one good speed test the second run it'll display 50kbps down 50kbps up then it'll reboot very odd don't know why this might be

Make sure you charge your phone full to 100% before doing a hard reset... This helped my battery life tremendously... Don't forget to backup your data
I do get random reboots, but only once in awhile (3x since I can remember from release date of Feb. 22)... I think Motorola is aware of this issue. There is an update in beta test right now so hopefully it will be out for every in the near future.
Good luck.
Is there any update to this? I am also having random reboots on 4.1.26 and 4.1.52

I noticed when my Atrix would reboot itself, it was USUALLY when GPS was in use. I know Speedtest sometimes uses GPS to determine which server to use, which might explain this? Just a guess though.

I've only had one reboot but messing with GPS caused it. Basically I went in and out of the navigation app 4 times. I can't remember why lol.
OP: Do you leave your gps on all the time? Maybe try turning it off for a day or 2 and see if that improves your situation.
Ive only had one reboot to date as well and it was also GPS related. I had just installed the update last night, and went into the app GPS status. it locked up and rebooted the phone. only time its ever happened...?
weird
I think the reboots are associated with polling.. if not polling then some underlying data send/receive issue.
i've also had about 3 random reboots in the past week, i'm currently running 4.1.57
My phone recently starts to reboot by itself too.
Running 4.1.57, rooted, and Webtop mod.
Most of the time it happens when I try to wake up the phone. The phone would not wake up and then reboot itself after a while.
At least with the update the issue is the phone randomly reboots when there is
1. Low Signal
2. Coming off wifi and unable to reconnect data.
Pretty much when the device loses the data connection and cannot reconnect it reboots. Been worse since the 1.57 update.

+1.........
when I've had random reboots, (about 2 of them since the 1.57 update) I've noticed that each time the phone was busy pulling something from teh internets, and would just jam-up. Maybe there's a buffer overload or something and the phone has to reset to clear its cache?
Then again, I know NOTHING about internets, except how to watch pr0n and dl torrents.
I too, have never had a single random reboot.
I've had 3 reboots in the past week alone. Mine usually happen at the beginning of a phone call. I'm getting sick of having to call the person back and explain that my phone just rebooted.
Anyone heard of any updates on this issue ?

[Q] Random Reboot?

So just a few minutes ago, I had my phone on my desk and out of the corner of my eye I noticed my screen went from off to on, and not my lockscreen, but the white HTC logo that you get when the phone boots up. It just up and rebooted on its own. The last few things I did was update Kernel Manager and install IP Address Widget. Running 4.4.2 kernel and BAMF 1.5-NTE.
Any Ideas?
are you overclocking at all?
were you tethering?
was the phone hot?
Are you familiar with ADB?
Same thing happened to me a little while ago, BAMF remix 1.5 o/ced to 1.2. Been stable for about 30 minutes since reboot.

Ive been having this same problem lately. It seems to happen primarily when i have aDownloader running(torrent app). It did happen once though while i was playing Angry Birds. I called Verizon about it but was told the only kkown issue with the TB is the battery issue... An in store rep however stated that he dealt with this problem before and said its an issue with the battery contacts and to clean them. I did give them a cleaning but the phone still reboots by itself. Its only happened about 3-4 times in the past week but still annoying nonetheless.
Had it happen again today on the way home.
BAMF Remix 1.5 o/ced to 1.2ghz.
On 4G
In the car dock on the car charger running nav.
After the reboot I checked the temp in SetCPU and I was running 40c. Turned off the charger and killed Car Home and the temp dropped like a rock to the mid 20s with in 5-10 minutes.
Same thing with 4.4.2 kernel. Maybe just too undervolted for some of our phones.

Mine is still STOCK. It does reboot every now and then. So I can proudly say that it isn't just because of the rooted/flashed, OCed and whatnot. I wonder what could be causing it? Oh and my stock text messaging app slows to a crawl and pulls the E-brake. I have to reboot to get it working again.
Most of the people I've seen reporting reboots had it after they updated to the leaked RUU. if it was happening to me on stock I would complain very loudly to Verizon.
I haven't rooted yet either, and the mysterious reboot happened twice.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Happened herw too. I had the problem when i first rooted. The phone would restart in bootloader. Now after I applied new RUU and radio I noticed phone restarted but no bootloader just regular. I am not sure if it is now from me killing some app and the phone doesn't like that.
This is a known problem for some people who have upgraded to the leaked RUU. BAMF 1.5 is a rom that is based off of that leak. Some people have reported random reboots, with & without OC'ing. Only other option right now is to use a rom that doesn't use the new base.
I think it may be the radio and not the OS part of the leak... I am using Perfect Storm 1.3 and updated ONLY the radio because I do not have the time at the moment to reset everything the way I like it... and I am getting the random reboots... 3 so far today... ive been trying to find a way to go back to the old Radio until this is sorted out... anyone know where I can find that?
Whatever is causing it its clear that its not a root issue since its happening to people whove rooted as well as people who havent rooted. As my last post stated, its happened to me 3-4 times this week and i havent rooted.
I do feel its b.s. that the verizon rep is blaming it dirty battery contacts.
I really think it's app related. Mine has rebooted twice. My wife's has done it at least 3 times a week. Although I noticed mine will be close to a dead battery when it does it. The wife's is just random. That's why I am leaning on app. I have since rooted mine on stock. I have not seen a reboot yet. Both times mine did it I was watching a long youtube video. Wife's is just sitting there when it reboots.

Run "adb logcat" and try to force the issue....If it is the same as mine, coming out of airplane mode causes the problem:

We never set airplane mode. And I haven't had it happen since I rooted last week. The wife has had it reboot again though. One more time and I am taking to the store and making them swap it. I am beginning to think it is an actual hardware issue of some kind in hers.

That's very interesting to hear yours is rebooting while on STOCK. This whole time, we've been under the impression it was our radios or possibly roms. Have you had any more reboots?
I had 4 reboots within an one hour running the latest radio leak and das bamf 1.5 remix.
I'm running Lightning ROM 3.3.1 with Minimalistic kernel extreme for the past 12 hours and haven't had one reboot.
I have 2 of these at work, both stock.
One reboots 3-4 times a week. The other is perfect- 0 reboots.
I replaced the bad one under warranty. The warranty replacement also reboots 3-4 times a week (they sent me a "new" one with no battery/accessories)
So Yesterday I swapped the batteries between my good Tbolt and my new replacement Tbolt to see if its a battery issue.... still waiting on results, so far no reboots on both
I am starting to think that its a charger issue though.
The good phone is charged once per day (overnight)
The bad ones are charged 2-3 times per day with different chargers (home, car, work). We notice that usually it reboots while its being charged or soon after its disconnected from a charger.

[Q] LTE issues. Random shutdowns.

Ok, before I get crucified, I have searched and I haven't found anyone having anywhere close to the same issues as I. My last phone lost 4g after rooting. I couldn't get it back till I restored to stock. Flashed radios, roms, and wiped cache, data, and davik cache. Well, I finally raised enough of a stink to get an NIB thunderbolt. Rooted then had the same issues with 4g going out. So finally I tried something I didn't try before, I reflashed the mr1 upgrade rom from J's root thread. I got 4g back, but now I have issues with it shutting down randomly. It's not a reboot, it's more like a sleep of death. I can only fix it with a battery pull and reboot. I'm not overclocked, and I haven't even used setcpu on the mr1 rom. Is anyone else having these issues? Also, when I first received the phone and used it unrooted for two days until I had time to root it, it was plagued with random reboots every hour or so. I loved my new phone and didn't mind it until I started having major usability issues. I can't deal with a phone that can't stay on all day and I'm not sure what to do at this point. Does anyone have any possible explanations for what I'm experiencing?
I have this issue but I am pretty sure it's hardware related. Sometimes if I put pressure on both ends of the phone and bend it a tiny bit, it will shut off. Might not be the same thing as you but that is what is causing it for me.

Sleep of death? Haha, yeah, I've got the same issue. Screen refuses to turn back on, but I know the device is still running since my notification light keeps blinking. Only solution is a battery pull. Happened twice today.

Yep. I too have experienced the sleep of death at least half a dozen times. I experienced it a lot on MRs. at the time I was running Gingeritis beta CO and Imoseyans kernel OC to 1403mhz.
I've been running on MR2 for a week now with Gingeritis final and Imoseyans kernel.... and haven't had one spasm.
Rooting doesn't disable 4G. Did you make sure your original TB radio wasn't set to CDMA auto (prl) in settings/network before returning it?

I've been getting SOD occasionally as well. Happened once on stock rooted, several times on gingerBAMF, and on BAMF 1.7 as well. Often it has happened while asleep to find phone unwakeable in morning, but still on. The last day or so I've had market downloads seemingly trigger it as well. At least it did it while updating apps....No physical triggers have caused it. It's never frozen in my hand as previous poster mentioned.
I'm scared it's increasing in frequency. Guess I'll see how MR 2.5 works when I get a chance next.
I didn't say that rooting was the cause. Just the series of events. It wasn't until I flashed new roms that I started having issues. I have gone back to mr1 upgrade and gotten 4G back, but now I have the sleep of death issue.

I did have a simi random reboot issue this morning or o think so. I was making coffee and heard the phone vibrate than screen. Went off and rebooted. I was running gingerits with twisted and imo kernel at 1400/184 smartass extreme. I think that was the issue cause I set it to 1400/240 interactivex and have had no issues and got 16hrs outta of my 1700 batt with heavy usage.

It's happened to me twice, once yesterday and once today. I have never had it happen until I flashed MR2.5.
i'm 3 days free of any more SODs after wiping to death and flashing MR 2.5 radio. happy days again. I hope. Probably just the wipe and not restoring any app data at all that made it better.

Random rebooting???

Has anyone else noticed that the Photon seems to self reboot at odd times. I have yet to have it reboot on me while using it, but my wife's Photon has rebooted on her during active use.
Anyone else experiencing this?
No, but you leave alot of unanswered questions. Is your wife rooted? what is she running (app's) that you are not running?
I have heard of this before and if i remember, delete everything and start new, just putting a few app's at a time back on. When it starts acting up, you found your app!

Shockingly enough, I did suddenly get that twice yesterday after updating YouTube. However I've been unable to reproduce it with any level of consistency at this point.
For the two Photons I have access too (both are doing the same thing), one is rooted one is not.
Apps in common are:
Enhanced email.
ADW Launcher
Car Home.
My feeling is that more people are having this issue they just don't know about it... I found it because I went to recently used apps and there were none, then I started to watch it...

I've experienced it a couple of times while playing music. A song would be playing and then it would suddenly reboot.
I'm using Google Music...
I've heard of that happening before the 154 update came out. So not sure if you're on the latest OTA or Leak why you'd be getting it, unless as someone mentioned it was an app. Which is possible I s'pose.
i did noticed that when the phone is in the charger, when i take a call
while the phone plugged in i hear no voice and the phone reboots
the phone was pretty hot when it happens so i can assume it's a heat problem
(in my case)
Mine has been rebooting more and more frequently. I went to Sprint today and had them order me a replacement. I'm hoping the new one does not have this issue.

What latest leak? The 198_7?
Yes sir. That's the latest leak/OTA update. Though the reboot issue was fixed for most people with the 154 update. I previously had that issue as well. So you could try that, but not saying it will for sure fix it. That's really the only idea I have, unless you try uninstall your apps and see if it's an app related issue.
Had same famous random reboot issue, after 154 update and a wipe.
Exchanged for new Photon at Best Buy (no hassle swap) 3-4 weeks ago, So far no random reboots. For me, I believe it was hardware related, noticed the phone was getting fairly warm around the same time the random reboots started happening.

I guess it could be hardware related, but that WAS a known issue when the first Photons came out. I had to exchange mine three times due to the reboot issue before the tech told me it was a reported and known issue and they would be releasing a fix for it.
My Evo 4G and EVO 3D both did this sometimes (both stock, not rooted, hardly any 3rd party apps) when signal strength was low.
My Photon does it much less often (did it once today though, but I'm in Canada roaming). My Photon is rooted, but pretty vanilla.
I have gone with all of the OTA's, and have yet to have a reboot.

There was some dude who had this issue and he stuck a business card at the space near the top of the battery to keep it lodged with the connections near the bottom. Supposed ly this worked....but you probably want to get a phone that works straight up.
