Hello,
I am trying to make this tethering work for several days, read lots of posts and still could not find a solution for making tethering work.
In summary it goes like this:
1. first i removed all the previous thethering entries from the db (carrier)and ran the gladenable script (after aroot of course).
2. If i try to add a new apn manually through the settings it deletes it when i finished editing the apn.
3. i edited in build.prop some field to false as someone said it would help (dont remember in which thread was it)
4. any how no matter what i try i still have only one apn which is my provider orange
please can any one help on this?
Should be in Q&A Section
Personally, I just use the Wireless Tether app for tethering via WiFi, and it works very well.
If you want USB tethering, I've used EasyTether in the past (not on the Atrix, but I believe it should work, as it doesn't seem hardware specific).
Never bothered at all with the APN tethering...
Moved to proper forum.

In your APN settings, under APN type enter: default, tether
Try that out.
Wow thank you very much it worked!!!
That didn't work for me. It is funny, it did work back in 1.2.6 but not in 1.5.7. I even went back to 1.2.6 to double check and worked again.
Are there any of you who are able to tether outside AT&T on an unlocked Atrix running 1.5.7?

It has been mentioned in another thread... not sure which one.
For wireless (!) tether, you can try switching on WiFi first, THEN switching on the wireless APN. Some bug in the check script then forces the APN to start immediately. That worked for me at least If it does not work the first time, try again. May result in a couple of force closes the first time you try.
It was mentioned and I did try it. Unfortunately it didn't work.
I just use barnacle. Needs root

I'm new to this phone coming from the (facetiously said) jailbroken "God Phone" 3g. I had the option in that phone to switch from 3g to EDGE with a softswitch via SBSettings. I used this quite frequently as 3g coverage in my house is 1 bar and dropped calls. Is there a way to manually switch the Atrix to the EDGE network. I can't figure out the way to do that on this phone. I'm running 1.8.3 jail...errr...rooted with Gingerblur (if any of that makes a difference). I've done searched but I'm not doing it properly I guess so I'm finally asking. Thanx much

Seems ATT and Motorola don't want us doing that because it's disabled. Every other android I've had has had this ability. And it really annoys me because 3g sucks at my home and office.
I spent an hour on the phone with ATT over this. All I accomplished was wasting my time.
you can unlock that option, go to system\etc\motorola\com.android.phone
open the defaults.xml and change the
<boolean value="false" name="network_select_menu"/> from false to true.
reboot device
you should be able to manually change 2/3g than. I have it working on my att atrix with gingerblur 3.1, however im not on an att network, it still should work for you tho

Interesting. I made the change and rebooted but that menu is still greyed out. So I looked at defaults.xml again thinking it changed it back, but its still set to true. Hrmm..
Try clearing dalvik cache and rebooting.

Has anyone else tried this on att software?

/data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs/_has_set_default_values.xml
/system/etc/motorola/com.android.phone/defaults.xml
Besides those two, which was the third? I've done those two, wiped dalvik and no luck.
I'm understanding that the defaults.xml in /system/etc only applies to a reset perhaps..
yeah what's the 3rd one??
sorry for the late reply
in my data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs folder I have 3 files
_has_set_default_values.xml
com.android.phone_preferencex.xml and
settings.xml
changed network select menu to "true" on all of them.
also did it under /system/etc/motorola/com.android.phone
defaults.xml
this didn't work for me until I deleted the backup files created by root explorer though. For some reason it was defaulting back to the original files. After I deleted the .bak files (in the data folder) it worked.
It doesn't seem to make a difference I've noticed. (Keep in mind I'm new at this) but I'm pretty sure my icon should change from H to E when I switch to the 2g network (options in network select are 2g, 3g and auto) Am I thinking correctly here? Or does Gingerblur override the icon?

FWIW, I believe /system/etc/motorola/com.android.phone/defaults.xml only takes effect with a factory reset. So changing this might not necessarily be needed..

#1 You're going to get bashed for posting in dev forum.
#2 Check out the lastest ROMs : Alien, AURA, etc. do everything except wipe your butt.
I apologize, I was much too vague in my original post. Allow to explain:
Pretty much every ROM out there enables tethering, however, AT&T has some sort of verification system when one uses the lapdock. This system is completely independent of the regular tethering hacks. I posted in the dev form in the hopes of inciting people to try and figure out what exactly has change. This is my current theory:
When the phone is placed into the lapdock cradle a request is sent to AT&T's servers to see if the account has a tethering plan or not. I also tried tethering to my laptop at the same time as putting the phone in the dock. Tethering worked just fine until my phone was placed into the dock, where it proceeded to give the error of "Lost 3g connection". Disabling entitlement check bypasses this for regular tethering, but not the dock. So then the these are my best guesses on how to fix the situation:
If we simply blocked the IP that this check is going through, would it bypass it?
Is there anyway to simply remove the check?

I am running Alien #4 ROM and this is working; this has also worked perfectly for me on Froyo stock as well.
1. Plug phone into lapdock
2. Click okay on error message saying you have to be on wifi
3. Turn on mobile hotspot (entitlement check disabling will allow this)
4. Open browser and find that you now have internet
5. Disable mobile hotspot (if you want)
6. Continue surfing on browser

+1 Worked for me
First of all, you are asking a question in the Dev forum which is a no-no, regardless of what the question is about. Just try to remember that for next time.
Second, there is a thread for this already here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160452
Take a look in there and see if any of their solutions can help you out or you could have at least asked your question there.
(It is also frustrating that this thread I just linked you to is on the first page of this forum so it would have taken no effort at all to find, just saying)
Excuse if I seem rude, I still haven't had my coffee...

Okay, I got qpst to connect to the facinate (its actually one the more stable droids I've used. The connections always work). I got it going great.
I've set my settings in m.ip and they stick, they do not revert to the @vzw3g.com address, they stick to whatever I have it.
Now, when programming PPP Config, I set up the username for UM and AN buttons and they revert back to [email protected].
I hit CTRL+D in the boxes to black them out with red X's, write to phone, then it will reboot but when it reboots its all back to default.
Is there a NV memory code I am supposed to read or change? I had this problem before with evo's, eris's, moto droid 1's and a bunch of other phones, but I could always get it going. For the facinate, I've been googling for 3 days straight and cannot seem to find anyone with this problem that has been answered.
Please someone help me out... all I need to do is make the settings stick in QPST under the PPP Config tab, under UM and AN. (The tethered NAI sticks but the one under it and on the AN page do not.).
The settings under M.IP stay (where you select the active profile or user and set up primary HA and passkey). Those settings stick every time, just ppp config settings are reverting. PPPPLEEEASE help
oh, and of course mobile won't start up now. I'm on stock 2.1-update1. stock

use 2 different versions of qpst,
you have to use qpst build 215 to get the ppp to stick or it will revert to vrz.
So use the build 323 to write everything, then uninstall and then use 215 to install ppp settings that didnt stick. walla.
will try and report back, thanks. Also, if anyone has flashed a moto droid 1 using white rabbit and his generator, i wrote using qpst, did the nv flash using white rabbit file and got a 3g icon finally. So if this doesnt work, i'll be sure to report back in with my findings, but THANKS for that info, i will give that a try too.

you are exactly correct sir. Hat's off to you for that. I will keep that in mind for other phones. You have done me a solid.
Now, I have tried a couple things. the u2nl and autostart option, this did not work.
After using qpst build 323 i had no 3g, vzw3g.com settings in ppp config. I then did the whiterabbit flash (originally for moto droid 1) and voila, 3g. I then verified the settings using qpst 215 and it was indeed @mycricket.com for both username under UM and AN. THANK YOU....
But alas, no work. So i tried to rewrite the settings, repeat the process, and no go.
In short, I have a 3G Icon, it flashes send arrow (the green one) but will not receive (the orange arrow). Now sometimes both will flash at the same time but thats just for a sec and rarely. Then i get no data. I get no web, no data...
Talk/Text great. Superuser installed, Great. Phone rooted, all is well. I must be overlooking something. Do we need the APN setup for the $45 plan?
I've done this on the HTC eris, MOTO Droid, HTC Evo, Desire, and tons of other phones and its pretty much the same thing but I just can't get this fella to go and I'm sure there is a catch (just like with the rest of them) that I have to do something special....
try this app to get your internet working.
http://www.cricketusers.com/flashin...k45-no-hassle-3g-internet-market-45-plan.html
if internet then works you have an issue with autostart or you didnt set the proxy setting using anycut. anycut proxy is needed for the main browser to work, and autostart/greenk45 for apps to work. if still nothing you need to double check all your settings in qpst make sure there all correct.
As for apn's thats only needed for mms, it is in no correlation to get internet working.
THANKS! I actually just did this, got fed up, flashes it back to stock froyo, root the thing, installed a superuser and autostart.zip via recovery, then did the u2nl and autostart and voila, it just started working.
This happens every time when I do a phone to cricket, i thought there might be a trick i was overlooking but there isn't. Its the same for almost all the droids.
AND THANKS for that app! Gonna flash to cm7 in a few and will try this before I even fool with u2nl. Thanks bro, you the man.
no problem, as for cm7 on the fascinate, i have yet to get mms working so if you manage to get it working let me know how =P
This is so funny... I tried this probably 5 different times and was ready to stomp the motherf###ing sh#t out of my phone and then I grabbed my old 32 bit windows machine and it worked the first time. And actually, I didn't even go through all the steps again, I just used the 2 different QPST's and it worked great. Ha ha, what the hell.
I can't use any app with mobile data, except for dolphin browser. But i can't download anything with them. And in apps like whatsup, google maps, google play store etc. it just says no connection. But when i'm connected to wifi i can use them with no problem. I was looking in the settings but i didn't find anything to fix it. Anybody has some idea?
Thank you.
I had something very similar after flashing a new ROM, Im now on leedroid with no problems so It might be the rom you are using?
unrooted stock rom :/ everything is stock
Try going to settings/phone update/update profile and see if updating your profile helps.
I don't have phone update in the settings :S
Sorry....it should be System Updates
It says that I already have the latest version... but everything worked, I don't know why this happened.
could go into phone programming and reset your data profile
##3282#, edit mode, enter your msl number, data profile, menu, restore.
this code doesn't work for me
I have a dumb question probably, but mobile network is checked in wireless and networks settings right ? And the mobile network settings are right, domestic data and voice should both be checked.
If all that is correct then i would take it to or call sprint and let them fix it. Sounds like an error on their side to me since your phone is stock.
Of course the settings are correct, because I can browse internet. And everything has worked until few days ago.. i don't want to bother with factory reset and that stuff, i'll just wait for ics to come.. if then something won't work then i'll contact htc...
If you go to the phone dialpad, ##3282# doesn't work, then something definately is wrong with your phone.

QPST does work on stock. Also, since I work for sprint I would recommend just doing a master reset since this is the first thing they will do when you take it in. Yeah it sucks having to set everything back up, but it will probably fix your issue.

I was just about to suggest that the APN's weren't correct, or to reset them, so maybe an apology to the person you told "Of course all the settings are correct" !?!?
Simple fix anyway, glad it's working.
If you ever have a problem like this in the future, chances are it's a phone issue, then a network issue then a rom issue, but ultimately a human issue.
Resetting the phone can always rule out the rom, trying another sim can rule out the rom, calling your network can rule out the network, i get issues like this on a daily basis, it's 9 /10 human error.
Oh an just a heads up, quite a few people tried to help you here and you said thanks not once?
Sorry guys, thought we had one of these already.
Just curious about the V_2.3.1? Mostly the reception, but....
Is the Reception any better - mainly for those that have lousy reception to start with.
Are you having any issues?
I haven't heard anything yet so let me know :good:
I have decent reception at my house but I think the beta added a bar to it (from 3 to 4). Definitely better at my son's school. I was only getting 3g there but now get LTE. The big test will be at work but I'm on vacation and don't go back until next week.
I was so amazed that I actually noticed a better internet connection I never looked at my signal bars there is an extra bar or two in my house, which I swear I only had one if that all the time one thing is that I'm not sure if it is the ROM or me but shutdownani is really choppy, every since 2.2 but I try modules sometimes that make my phone unstable like xprivacy& cool tool which I immediately remove but deff noticed improved signals, like I actually see the difference

Yes, I already did that edit. 4 me in a specific area the 4G is slower than the 3G. I wanted to try different apns. But those APN would not connect for Sprint at all
What is the intended effect of that file? Sprint has its own APN on a profile update
Works Well for me, definitely see improvement with Switching from 3g to LTE. I also find an LTE signal much quicker. I work in NYC, before the 2.3.1 update I would struggle to get an LTE signal once I left Penn station, now As soon as I walk out it grabs a signal. engine95 you are the Man Bro.

The original, and the beta do the update profile/prl as they should. And "Activate device" is the telltale.
But, you can't use the beta on a fresh install. Meaning on a full ROM. It'll only work as an update.
Remind me again what issue you're trying to fix and I'll see if I can help.
Edit: In V3, it has a new zipalign binary that does what you want.
Did some testing, updating profile/prl works because it uses apn settings from activation, but if you do ##72786# which erases everything then reboots and does an activation using apn.conf.xml to connect to ota. But the setting don't work for ota. Crashes phone app and then only way to fix by wiping and doing clean install.

That would be right because it has to go through the setup all over again. Just like a clean, full rom install. And it can't find the apn it needs.
Yes, all that file is, is a hack. Not a fix.
Well I'm going to keep working on trying to make the hack safe,
The new native hosts file appears to be blocking random pictures in the play store. Not sure which URL is the culprit but I disabled the file temporarily and the pictures come back. Other than that v3 is running great. Thank you.
I didn't experience any data or APN issues, rom running good, battery real good, only thing I noticed, LEDs aren't working for any app, for me.

Mine are but the timing is about 10 sec between blinks.
I guess check your settings, and maybe wipe cache and dalvic?
I just realized I don't have the native Wi-Fi calling app. Can I ##72786# from v 3.01 and get it to download or is that only on factory ROM?
