How to flash back to 4.1.26 ? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi , im new to rooting on android but very experienced in jailbreaking ios . I am wondering how to flash back to 4.1.26 and then root my atrix , if there already is a post about this im sorry. And also can i root through mac ? thanks -JDM07

Follow this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072
Don't know if you can use the scripts in a Mac, you should, however, be able to root with a bunch of ADB commands, but I take it youd rather have a script that does it for you.

[Q] Please point me in the right ROM direction

Hi all
I have a G2 touch that was stock and got the OTA update to 2.1 (t-mobile). But i decided I wanted root, not for developing just to get rid of a few system apps like stock and peep.
so i followed a few guides read lots of things and ended up having the generic htc rom 1.5 and rooted after making a gold card and downgrading. The problem was the OTA upgrade to 2.1 wouldnt install. (no groans from those that know what they are on about i'm new to this and thought it would upgrade )
as i like 2.1 more i ended up reflashing the stock 1.5 htc rom without having root and the OTA upgrade worked fine.
Now ive played with the generic htc 2.1 i actually prefer the t-mobile rom as it seems to have more in it like g-sensor calibration etc.
ive read several pages on here and other forums and now im just confused as to how to get a rooted version of the t-mobile 2.1 rom.
is it even possible?
if not and i do the full gold card and downgrade procedure again Which ROM will give me rooted 2.1 that is the closest to the t-mobile stock so i can remove the stock apps i want rid of?
sorry if it seems like an obvious question but i really dont get all this kernel, radio flashing, kitchens and all of that stuff i just want a simple rom i can put in and everything works like normal except i have root
thanks for your help

I'm not aware of any T-Mobile 2.1 ROMs, as everyone wants to rid their phone of branding normally.
But... here's the best method for you. Install your old official 1.5 ROM, and then do the OTA update to 2.1. Make sure you install your T-Mobile 1.5 to do this.
Then, go to http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=2096 and follow that guide to get a custom recovery image onto your phone. From there, you can use adb to access your handset as root, and add and remove stuff as you please. ADB info is in that guide, and a guide to removing apps is at http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=862
HTH
PS. This won't give you everyday root, for things like root apps, since your ROM won't itself be rooted. But if you look up "Superuser.apk" and push that to /system/app (you'll learn about pushing etc with adb or googling 'adb push'), along with the su binary, you can give yourself basic root, though it won't be perfect.
If anyone else wants to help out, what you'll need is the 2 superuser files i mentioned, and a modified boot image that has the changed hero.prop (i think it's called that), with ro.secure set to 0 in the ramdisk.
But don't worry about this later stuff unless you need to.
Hi thanks very much for the help
i get the idea right up until the basic root bit, so think i will get that far .....after that you lost me
will i be able to use apps for rooted devices if i just get the basic root working?

Should be able to. Give it a go That last bit wasn't intended for you, more for anyone who tries this in future and wants adb root access.
i've managed to hit another problem....
i'm trying to install the adb drivers and having trouble. i have the normal usb drivers installed and have downloaded the drivers from villanrom (it wont let me post the link sorry)
but when i tell it to install them i get a window pop up saying the driver contains no information for my device.
ive uninstalled the my htc drivers and tried again but i never get an adb device appear.
am i missing something obvious?
im using windows xp and have the hero set to pc sync when connected.
thanks

Hmm OK. I know the issue. Find the driver folder, and use this file as the ini file

I had to hack the file to make it recognise the hero

[Q] I want to root for 1st time ever, but I have a Mac

I am here today because I need help. I want to root for 1st time ever, but I have a Mac. I hear about all of the great things I can do with my Vibrant after rooting but I am scared of trying this without a PC. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? Also lead me to the best roms. Thank you.
Well my first suggestion would be to get a PC
But seriously, you could always get a copy of XP somewhere (pretty easy to get for free), or a later Windows OS and dual-boot your system.
Or you could just dl Ryanza's lag fix from the market and root it that way.
You do not need a pc.
Download the file to your phone, put it on the root sdcard/ and go into stock recovery and flash it.
Afterwards, get rom manager and make a backup.
Flash a rom, bionix or eugene's
This is all in the general section sticky I made. EVERYTHING you need is there.

Take a look at this post. I would recommend you pull the latest version, su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip, from this thread instead of "SGH-959 Root Update.zip" from the 1st link.
slighpcs-
I have taken your advice but my phone has only installed the Superuser app. I am scared that if I do anything else I will brick my phone. Is there a way to unroot it? I would like to try rooting again with the non PC version. Thank you
Download rom manager
Flash clockwork recovery
make a nandroid backup.
Now you have something you can always revert to.

Yes sir, that's exactly what you should have after successfully completing the process. To unroot from your device take a look here. View the Full thread (Page 1) to perform via adb. I don't see any reason you need to worry yourself about bricking. Unless your planning on testing kernels, ROMs, etc... If that's the case, make sure you read the entire thread before you make any decisions, and ask questions as it seems that most everyone here is willing to lend a hand.
search ryanza on market place. download the free version you can root and unroot from there simple instructions very easy to understand.
download rom manager (it auto installs superuser also) from market place also free download. that will allow you to make backups and restore should you encounter any problems.
also if your running OSX you can dual boot from Bootcamp windows, and if your running atleast a core 2 duo system you can dual boot windows 7/Vista 64bit.
A pc is needed for almost no modification when it comes to this phone.
I had to put effort into bricking my phone so you should be fine, just make sure if you have installed the OTA that any themes you install support the JI6 update. thats the only way i bricked my phone lol, and again that was a easy fix. Read read read so much to learn.
Thank you everyone for your help. I have succesfully rooted my phone. I think I will wait for the 2.2 OTA update since I hear that they are slowing coming around for the galaxy S phones. I want to try the bionix rom but I do not want to install it to soon and miss out on my chance to get the OTA update.

Can someone help me with the big picture please?

I have had my new at&t atrix a few weeks now after replacing my htc aria that I modded with cm7 thanks to these forums. I have been reading like crazy and have only gotten more and more unsure of my best course of action. If someone could nudge me in the right direction, I sure would appreciate it.
My atrix came with 4.1.57 on it and I have been getting a notice for the 4.1.83 ota update which I have postponed until I understand how to keep my device hackable and unbricked. I ultimately want to accomplish the following:
I want to root the atrix.
I want to have the ability to backup/restore my phone with a recovery option like cwm.
I want the webtop/hdmi hack.
I want sideloading ability.
I want the the wifi hotspot hack.
I want the option to install other roms as they become available (so I guess that means I want the option to unlock the bootloader as needed for this purpose)
I also would like to get to Gingerbread at some point.
My major questions are:
Should I install any OTA updates?
Should I accomplish a backup/recovery capability as a first step?
Should I root or bl unlock before or after I upgrade the android version?
Do I need to do the webtop, hotspot, sideload mods before or after the android upgrades?
I'm not asking for a hand holding here. If someone could just give me the order I should do things in, I can research how to do the steps (links would be especially kind however). Now that there is an official OTA of Gingerbread available (which I think unlocks the BL), I am unsure what I need to do....in what order.....to accomplish the stated goals while also preserving my options for the future goodies that might come along. I feel bad asking but I really have tried to figure it out on my own and just need the advice of someone who has the big picture...please! Thanks in advance
OTA to 1.8.3 It's a good place to start. Will also fix a few issues people had with 1.5.7. Easy to root and enable sideloading with Gingerbreak and gladenable (I think was the sideloading one...someone correct me if I'm wrong). The webtop hack, hotspot mod, and (older style)CWM from Tenfar work great. Can flash back and for between and 1.x.x build as much as you want. It's when you get to the GingerBread build that you can't flash back to older versions...(unless special exceptions are made and I'm not going into that here...search is your friend)
I'd OTA to 1.8.3 and then start playing...but that's just me.
Sorry no links to give...search for gingerbreak and (I think) gladenable.
Hi, this is the first time i try to help someone here so i hope this is what you want.
I Search a lot here and they send me to a page and also to a youtube video of how
Can you do it. I don't know if i can put the link here but very easy just do
A google search for "atrix4ghacks" and go to that page over there you find how to do it
It works very great for me, know i'm looking the best way to get the gingerbread 2.3.4
The first step it to OTA to 1.83 then unlock the bootloader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
- use the unlocker sbf
The second step it to install CWM Recovery Mod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138541
Now that you have the bootloader unlocked you have support for installing custom roms later just make sure you DONT DO THE OTA UPDATE TO GB it will hard brick your device with boot error.
now that you have CWM you can backup all your data and system files the next step is to ROOT and enable sideloading you can do that using GladiAtrix
Then you can install Webtop mod from here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1015630 webtop
i dont know how to do the Wifi Hotspot hack but im pretty sure you have to edit the build.prop in sys and you have to be rooted in order to acces those files, so that's it that should leave you with a rooted unlocked phone and with all the other features you want if you want to move to GB later you can flash a GB sfb with the unlocked bootloader integrated in the sbf from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182526
Just remember if you are on 1.83 with unlocked bootloader dont OTA to GB it will hard brick your device.
Hope this helps and btw i take no credit for the links, that's somebody elses job.
Thanks a ton. Thats exactly what I needed. One question....if I do the last step (sbf to gbread), will I still be able to have root, cwm, and the webtop/sideload hacks? Or is that premature?
Slightly stuck.....

I did this and was surprised to find that all my apps and settings were wiped. I did see that /data needed to be backed up but no matter how I tried, I did not find any /data partition that had anything in it. Assuming that was my mistake, how would I have accessed and backed up that partition? Spilt milk but I am still curious.

The /system/etc/install-recover.sh file is read only and so cannot be removed...I am assuming I need root to change the permissions. I was able to boot into recovery the first time but then the subsequent boots would give me the exclamation. I guess I have a backup and now I can go root.
You must root in order to be able to write over the original files, you can use Gladiatrix to root then you can use root explorer to overwrite the previous files in the system folder,
you mean you cant go into cwm?
sorry for the late reply im having a hard time keeping track of all my posts besause i changed my email adress and i can figure out how to change it from xda account if you need any more help pm me

Yes i actually have rooted GB on my phone and CWM flashed, you can enable sideload on GB without rooting or doing anything, thats the new policy about sideloading from at&t yada yada yada... webtom hack over hdmi is still in development we should have that in no time

[Q] Help reroot dx2

Please bear with me
OK I have a rooted Dx2 ver. 2.3.3 i need to send in my Dx2 for replacement but Verizon told me they won't unless i have the current vers. of GB 2.3.4.
To unroot there is an app in the market that will remove it completely, including all the symbolic links, its called Ginger Unroot.
Ginger Unroot did the trick, i re-installed all the bloat ran Ginger Unroot, but i missed unfreezing 2 files i think they were "update" and "updater".
So when i went to settings - about phone - System Updates, but it does not work.
So i screwed up now i just want to root the phone and if the files are still there, unfreeze the the 2 files and unroot again and d/l the 2.3.4 OTA.
Here's where i really need help i was going to use Gingerbreak to root but i found out it is no longer supported i think it is because i'm running 2.3.3
I have been searching for days on what to do and all i have found out there does not appear that a one click root does not exist.
I have heard that i might have to SBF back to froyo??
Can i do it on a mac?
i'm worried that i will need to do it on a pc.
Also what version of windows do i need to use?
If i have to SBF can i d/l the files and go to an internet cafe or kinkos and use a pc to do this?
Here's an example are the drivers for the phone or are they meant to be run on a pc, would an internet cafe or kinkos let me do this installing software on their computers.
*Install the necessary moto drivers*
* Motorola_End_User_Driver_Installation_5.1.0 32bit or 64bit depending on your computer's CPU architecture
First do you know if i do gain root again will the 2 files show up or have they been
deleted, gone forever.
If this is the only way, can someone tell me exactly what i need to do. I don't want to try to follow any posts because if im at a kinkos or someplace i can access a pc. i don't want to wind up getting stuck or not understanding something.
If i can get to a pc i see that you need to use terminal commands, if i have to do it that way i'll be lost and screw up something.
Please help i don't want to get to a place that i might not fully understand
In other words a Dumbed down set of instructions.
I'm not knocking forums but because of my disability i get lost and frustrated with all the info you can find. I really need to get any help from one person, i get very confused easly
Which method do you recommend/easies: It seems Wugfresh has a one click vers. which is still confusing. I have come across other posts on how to reroot which is making it nearly impossible to follow.
I have ADD and i'm ready to give up and hope i can tell Verizon it won't update and won't discover the 2 missing files, do you think if i just tell them it won't update, and having removed any signs of it was rooted, do you think i can get away with this "playing dumb" cus so far over the past 2 weeks i have gotten responses from my posts that don't help, i just get told to "see this post" and tell me to try this or that.

I am really burned out, please tell me what you recommend.
To be frank i would just like to return it as is, do you think i can get away with this?
Thanks

A sbf will solve your problems and I believe it can work with any software mine is vista. Go to the development section first post from booked and he has all the files you need. Use Pete's one click root very easy. Don't give up you will just have to read some.
Hey there! Welcome in! Got to my tutorial thread here: HowTo: Perform a SBF ("factory restore") of your Motorola Droid X2. This will walk you through, step by step, how to perform an SBF restore. If you have questions, either post them in that thread, or PM me. It's simple and straight forward.

Have been looking too
Yea I have been looking for a copy of of P87010f_00.kdz image too as that is what my handset has installed as stock image. I wanted to have this image backed up to an external source before I perform any mods. As my I have only been just starting to familiarize myself with linux commands and distributions that past few years. In looking over android information I'm inclined to believe that before I will be able to backup this image/firmware I will need to gain root access. This is a concern for me as I am not certain if this access still allows the handset the run with user privileges as well as root privileges. As I mentioned briefly at the start I am quite a noob in this area. In line with that tman I am still running the P87010f_00.kdz and I have found the only source online for v10f from the link in this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1976116, has seemingly past it's life. If you tman or someone else can assist with information about if and how I back up the current firmware image and if that requires the device to be rooted. As well in rooting if the backup created will be a rooted backup meaning recovery operations will restore the device with root access.

I been reading up more since I first posted here and had been researching here long before to educate myself. In what I've been reading over today it would seem that among the benefits, rooting your phone primarily allows you to navigate the directory structure of your phone. After rooting the phone I wonder if to make use of root privileges/permissions I would need to use SUser as with the majority of linux dist. If a rooted phone still requires SUser initiation to use root level privileges/permissions then I will proceed with rooting as I am looking to do and have my first task be to save v10f to file. Where I am still unclear of the full extent and specifics of android root not to mention what I've read about certain changes with relation to zygoate that I've just started learning about. If it is not possible to backup firmware image with root, which I'm inclined to think, maybe we can find someone from the other p870 thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1976116 that still has a copy in backup.
