High Android System and Android OS Battery Usage - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My fascinate has been running beautifully. I just transferred to blackhole 4.4 from sc 2.9.2, w/ jt's 4-15 uv ED10 voodoo kernel (previously on imnuts's 100mv drop voodoo) and ec01 radio. My main issue is battery. On any given day for the past few months, under battery usage, android system is always second. It seems that Abdoid system and os eaxh download over 10KB per minute, and up to a few megabytes an hour. They also have extremely high CPU usage times, and I believe this is killing my battery (between 6 and 10 percent an hour idling w/ the screen off) I think such drain is extremely weird. I've tried reflashing, disabling autosync, and disabling autobackup, but I still at am about a MB per hour. Any suggestions? Carrying around a charger really sucks...

This would certainly fit nicely in Q&A. Just sayin ....

Did you sign yourself out of google talk yet? And disable the auto start of talk?
I also uncheck that "not very clear" option in display settings at the bottom.
And the news and Weather auto refreshes on its own unless you disable that..
And then there is Juice defender..

I think it has something to do with the 4-15 Kernel. That build for some odd reason has battery issues. I would flash the kernel before that.

If "System panel lite" is installed uninstall it. Seems some people install it to find the problem but also kills tge battery itself.

I just overcame a 12 hour max to 32+ by disabling these things. Not sure which or what combination was successful just yet though.
Also full charge and battery wipe ahould help.

Battery life, stock vs custom rom.

So, I flashed back to stock the other day and used it for a bit. I noticed that the battery life seemed better. So after some tests I ran, I find I get about 3 1/2 hours on super clean, 4 hours on aosp and 15 hours on stock. I ran them from full to shut down with no activity other that screen always on and a live wallpaper. I even deleted the bstats on super clean and got the same result almost to the minute. Any ideas?

This is very interesting. We are always trying to remove limitation on our phones OS while those limitations must be there for some reason.
Dunno anything about this. I always turn off most services on my galaxybs running darky o.t and i have pretty reasonable bat. life although its.kind of.irregular.

3.5 hrs sounds about right for me for superclean, too. I read the news every morning and by the time I finish (~1-2 hrs) I'm getting the low battery beep. It's absurd. Maybe it's time for me to go back to stock. I love SC 2.92 but if it means charging a phone all day or using it all day, I'd rather use my phone.
How are the hacked dj05 and DL09 roms for battery life? Does anybody still have those files lying around?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I tried dj05. Was not much better. But I was coming from super clean, I should try it coming from stock and see what happens.

Second on superclean.
Using EB01 baseband, eb16 kernel, sc 2.90. Battery is 4+ hours display on & 12 or so hours before I charge it, even with gps, 3g and wifi on all day. Just sitting, it is typically good for 24 hours or more, but I seldom let that happen. It is similar to what I got on eclair. Maybe a little worse, but totally worth having the improved OS.

Battery life between Cleanrom 1.1 and Cleanrom 1.6?

A while back I installed the 1.1 version and the battery life was amazing, now I.have.the 1.6 and my battery is getting.drained super fast. Anybody have any idea why this is happening with cleanrom? Anyone else seeing this problem?

Did you do a full wipe before installing it I'm running CleanRom 1.6.5 SP1 and battery for me is great.
Im running 1.6 sp1 as well. I'm getting pretty decent battery life. Can't say much about 1.1 though. But compared to the ICS leaks its fantastic haha.
I sure did, I haven't flashed the sp1, I'm running the incredikernel 3.1 , new ota radio, have I made a mistake?

I would run the kernel that came with CleanRom I also have the radio update. I think that the kernal is where Scott might have made some tweeks also.

I think running incredikernel with his tweaks or the fact the tweaks aren't working with that kernel is probably causing the quick drain. You can run that kernel ,but I would delete the file with the tweaks on it. I am not sure of the name it was in this thread some posts back. Otherwise, switch to the kernel that came with the rom and try that.
Running 1.6.5 sp1 and having good battery life. Then again, I was running the ICS version for a while. From what I remember it's better than I was getting with 1.1.
My battery has been pretty bad, but don't know if it's the ROM or its the upgraded radio. Did both at the same time. Same programs and usage patterns, but significantly shorter battery life. Even with mobile data off, the drain during sleep is a lot higher than before.

I have. Nothing out of the ordinary - all the same things I had running in 1.5.5. The problem is not wakelocks. something is making the battery drain at a higher level all the time. I also used battery monitor widget to look at the battery drain. Before it would drain at around -180ma when the phone is sleeping. Now the lowest it goes is -310ma. Similarly, when charging, it used to charge at a max of 970ma... Now it maxes out at around 790ma. So something is just constantly drawing more power, even on a brand new flash of 1.6.5 with nothing else installed.
So I think the new radio is the culprit and am hoping that the ICS upgrade comes soon with a new radio.
Same thing is happening to me exactly

Problems with phone since I rooted

Hello been having some annoying problems with the phone since i rooted it a while back. I used HTC unlock method and followed the tutorial for hboot 1.5 immediately I got horrible battery life. I had twrp if that matters, aside from the horrible battery life. I'd get a lot of random reboots. I replaced battery battery still sucked. I did the hboot downgrade battery still sucks now, and random reboots started bad now. I've used miui rom a couple of senses ice cream they all ear my battery I'm full charge at 630am and by ten I'm getting the low battery notification, I have tried almost every from and non have worked. Is it time to bash this phone against a wall? Its the only android phone I've had that has done this. I'm a Android user since the g1 btw. Which had horrible battery life but in comparison it beats this phone. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Do you know what clock speed you are running at?
This may seem like a silly question but what kind of case is your phone in, have you left your phone in a location that may have heat damaged your battery. Have you tried another battery and experienced the same rapid discharge?
Its a freaking meeting of the half minds in here OP excluded! Recovery is not the Culprit of the battery drain!
The culprit of the battery drain has to do with the Kernel for instance Anthrax Kernel is awesome but will drain your battery quicker then ****!
@OP I suggest you try meanrom it has a very good battery life and Mikeyxda is constantly trying to make it better and you have your choice between four different Kernels to choose from You have the new one (I dont remember the name) Ziggy's, Anthrax's and stock. I prefer Ziggy's and I get good battery life with it.
From what I have seen most if not all ICS roms are using Anthrax! As I stated before Anthrax Kernel in sleep mode drains your battery at 2% an hour so you can imagine how much it uses when its awake.
Dont get me wrong anthrax is blazing fast!
I assumed recovery had nothing to do it. Will try meanrom and report back.

How much screen on time? Do you have good signal? Are you leaving 4g on all the time? With constant use, it is normal to only get a few hours, especially with low signal or 4g.
Could be a rogue app. I like better battery monitor (available on xda) and bad ass battery monitor (in market) to see what is draining my battery.

I'm running MeanRom w/ dodava and it is BY FAR the best batt life i've had on this phone to date. On light usage days I can go all day (12+ hours) and still have >75% left. I also use Juice Defender Ultimate to auto-disable data/gps/etc on screen-off but from what you're saying it sounds like your batt life is freakishly bad. I don't think it's even a wakelock issue, you must have a runaway application eating 100% cpu all the time or something severely broken in your OS.
I'm guessing you didn't do a full wipe of the phone before flashing MeanRom?
Also, after flashing a new kernel/rom your battery stats may be messed up and you may need to recalibrate before it's accurate again:
I use the app "BatteryCalibration" by NeMa (free in Market).
Just follow the instructions in the app.
So... You need to flash it again but this time:
1.) Do a full wipe by flashing one of those Wipe utils first. There's a link to one on the MeanRom page as MikeyXDA mentions it. DO NOT Reboot after doing the wipe but proceed immediately to install the MeanROM zip. This will wipe out any data that doesn't sync to google. Your SD card will not be erased but everythign else will.
2.) Do be extremely selective about re-installing your applications. The Android system may have gotten FUBAR'd from flashing of different ROMs on top of each other and that may be the cause and would be fixed by #1 above but it's just as likely you've installed some very bad application(s). When you open Google Market for the first time after a clean wipe and flash it will start re-downloading everything you had installed before. STOP it from doing that. Even if you have to pull the batt out or whatever. Next time you open it, it won't automatically start installing everything but will let you choose them one at a time. Install only the bare minimum apps at first and check an App Killer and CPU monitor like SystemPanel Lite to look for high CPU usage and kill any stuck apps. Each day maybe you can add a few more apps and this way you'll know when your batt life goes to hell again which app it was that sent it there.
Anytime you switch from one ROM to another you should do a full wipe. The only exception is when maybe flashing a newer version of the same ROM on top of an older one. (i.e. Flashing MeanRom 4.3 on top of 4.1 or something.) I've noticed that after kernel upgrades even though my battery often needs to be recalibrated.
I unplugged my phone 3+ hrs ago, lightly checked it a couple of times this morning and glanced at it a few times while writing this and I'm still at 96%. I'm running MeanRom 4.1 at the moment but will upgrade to 4.3 tonight maybe.

[Q] JB battery life

Anyone else have battery issues on jb? I'm using akop milestone 4 and i'm lucky if i get 7 hours on a full charge. Not sure what to do.
Check and see what is using most of battery. I have disabled the error reporting and that seems to help. Of course if you do that I would keep in mind to enable before making big changes that might causes crashes.
Screen brightness and amount of time set for screen lock also accounts for some drain

Holy hell Batman at the Battery Drain!

Is anyone else getting Android OS around 50-60% battery use?
I have tried every ROM included going back to stock. I have ran the phone with nothing but Stock and no apps installed for a day and still get the same drain so I can only assume its a kernel issue.
I am not familiar with LG products in the slightest, but I had a yellow screen of death the other day...something I have never seen in my years with samsung android products. Anyone have any idea what this is maybe it is pointing to a hardware issue?
LG made a great phone, but I don't think I will keep it much longer. Locked boot loaders, no sources, and history of terrible updates have me regretting purchasing this phone. I tried my hand at building a working jb release when I first got the phone and it is going to take a skill set I do not have and I hate waiting on a company to do what they've never done in the past..

Easy, brother. I have only had one of my apps/utilities run higher than AndroidOS ever on this phone; however, that said, I think there is a problem with the way it's being calculated. I'm getting really good battery life with good sleep and still AndroidOS shows the highest by far. I know that's abnormal for it to be so high and still get good battery life, but it is what it is.
Edit: you've installed the fast dormancy toggle, right? As for the yellow screen, I've seen it once in my two months with the phone, just rebooted and carried on. Forgot what they said it was...but it is here in this forum somewhere.

I was just about to post something similar. Andriod OS being high kind of makes sense if nothing else is using the battery, although you would expect that number to fall significantly with increased screen on time and heavy app usage, which it doesn't ever seem to.
I've been having horrible battery drain lately. I'm currently traveling for business, and just use my OG for web surfing and stuff when I'm in my hotel. I leave the phone in airplane mode, with WiFi on. About two weeks ago, when I was on The Base 0.4 in that same configuration, my battery would drain maybe 1% an hour while I was sleeping.
Recently I've been on The Base 0.7.3, and my battery drains over 5% an hour while I'm sleeping. This means no screen on, no apps running, and even turning WiFi off! How does it use that much battery when it's not doing anything? Now, I'm not entirely sure what kernel I'm running. The first time I installed The Base 0.7.3 I used sk8's kernel. After getting poor battery life, I reflashed 0.7 and 0.7.3, this time choosing the freegee kernel. I'm not actually sure if the kernel changed though.
Anyway, I think I'll post again tomorrow with some screenshots from Better Battery Stats+ and CPU Spy.
I'm wondering if this recent botched update had the battery fixes we need. Hopefully they'll re-release it soon.

When I would get bad drain, which has happened several times, I could narrow it down to a couple things in order to solve the problem.
In my case it would always happen after installing Google+. Uninstall and reboot would usually fix the issue. If I got drain on a fresh install without g+ installed, I found that if I installed the 2.2 kernel separately as a stand alone zip, that would fix it. Don't know why but it may work for you too.
I don't have screen shots, but today I recharged at 38% after 3:10 of phone use and 1:55 screen on time and about 15 hours off charger. That's with Wi-Fi on the whole time and Bluetooth for about 9 hours. I have my work exchange account on active sync with push notifications. Facebook and Twitterer to 4 hour intervals. I'm underclocked to 1350 and using powersave gov with deadline.

Believe you are correct. There were issues on the Samsung Infuse and even the international SGS3 for a while... it was referred to as 'memory leak.' Has been worked out by devs on XDA. You can put memory leak in the XDA search above... it's above my pay grade.
Edit: It's great to see another RD here... hope you will reconsider keeping the phone and stay !!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I have Google+ uninstalled, but part of me thinks Google Now may be partially the culprit (although why that would be the case with all radios off, I don't know).
I'll try a fresh install of the 2.2 kernel and see if that helps. Thanks.

^^^ This is indeed worth considering.... I think the question then becomes why is it consistent among the 3 roms we are using? Maybe when JB source is out and something is built from source all will be good.

I would be less inclined to believe it is a faulty measure if we had a different ROM not built off stock (AOKP/CM10) that could produce different values. However, I seriously doubt anything built into either of the two custom ROM's is geared toward normalizing that reading. That's why they are both the same as the stock AndroidOS percentages. Jivy is probably right that it's a kernel issue. With the size battery we have, imagine the potential if it is a true reading (androidOS out-of-control) and we can get it under control down the road. We're talking double the current best battery life you've ever had on this phone at the very least.

Get BetterBatteryStats, select Since unplugged and Alarms to see what is waking the device (making it not go into a deep sleep). eBay was a big culprit for me.
The wakelock that keeps the phone awake during background data transfer (screen off) lasts 6 seconds (I am guessing it does it in multiples of 6s) regardless of how long the sync takes. Everytime email, facebook, gmail, drive, picasa, twitter, g+, google maps, ebay, calendar, contacts.. whatever wakes the phone to check something, it will be a minimum of 6 seconds.. This adds up over the course of the day and it is counted in the Android OS. Shut down syncs you don't absolutely want/need and this number will go down. All phones with the Snapdragon S4 Pro has it, especially the Nexus4. It seems they've done some kernel work to fix/reduce it but I havent really looked into it since I don't have that phone. I've seen complaints in the Droid DNA forum as well.

Get BetterBatteryStats, select Since unplugged and Alarms to see what is waking the device (making it not go into a deep sleep). eBay was a big culprit for me.

This. EBay for me too. BetterBatteryStats is your friend.
Anyone else experiencing scrolling lag or delay. Clearing cache and wiping dalvik fixes it but the issue returns after about two days.
