I'm not sure when it started, but I noticed recently that my internal SD card is only showing at 13gb, instead of 14gb. What's even stranger to me is that when I mount the usb, windows says it's capacity is 14,036,262,912 bytes (if my math is right, that's 14gb), but then right next to that says 13gb. So somewhere I lost a gig of storage space.
I've noticed this both on stock and Vegan 5.1.1. Any ideas?
(DISCLAIMER: I think I've read about this problem or similar ones, but after hours of reading threads and trying several search terms, I can't find it. If it's old news, just point me to the thread and leave the flaming at the door. Thanks!)

Your math is wrong. 15,032,385,536 bytes is exactly 14GB. 14,036,262,912 bytes is 13.072GB. Everything is on a 1024 base system not 1000
That's a handy little site. Ok, my math is wrong, and I feel stupid because now that you mention it I know everything's not 1000 based.
All that aside, I'm still showing 13 instead of 14gb storage on a g-tablet with nothing loaded on it. I've partitioned with cwm to 2048,0. Anyone know where my 14th gb ran off to?

As badfrog already gave you - 14,036,262,912 bytes is 13.072GB. Windows translates it down to what that relates to instead of just telling you it's 14gb... The issue here is that manufacturers all do this to say you're getting 14gb (which is true - you're getting 14 billion bytes, aka 14gb....) but when it gets translated by the computer it's always going to come up differently, showing the true 1024-based nomenclature.
Incidently MacOS 10.6 changed how they report storage, making it exactly 1000 instead of 1024....
iow, all g-tablets are shipped saying they have an internal 16gb memory, but really it's only ~1.7 for system, and 13 for storage?

2048 for data and 0 swap space is what is created - leaving 14,036,262,912 for storage....
That makes sense.
Sorry for the rather n00bish question. I must've imagined having extra space. Thanks!

Hello all, new to the forum (though an active reader all the time, this is a goldmine of info).
I recently got a micro SDHC for my hero, a 16 Gb monster. Well, it monstrously FUBARed when i tried to format it. It was a second hand deal, but i checked at first and had full capacity. I formatted it in Vista, simple right click and format. I didn't look at the details, just all default settings.
The card is now read as a 122Mb card. I tried formatting it in the phone itself, and with the Panasonic SD format program, to no avail. I am now stuck with the tiniest SDHC card in history.
I've read about this issue and others seemed to regain the original capacity with the panasonic program. I also heard about partition managers working for some, but can't find one for memory cards.
Anyone got any ideas? I can put about five songs on my phone right now...
Thanks ahead of time. And sorry if this has been covered, i searched the forums and found a few articles, but didn't find a clear solution.

Post Scriptum...
PS: the card is a SanDisk class 6 and cost me an arm. >_<
Thanx
Where did you get it from? You could have been scammed.
I'd grab a live linux cd and see if you can rescue it. fdisk or something should able to rescue it. I would have some reservations about you being scammed though as mentioned.
I'm looking for an fdisk utility, but not too confident. First of all, its not a SanDisk but a Transcend, my mistake, but i think its fake because the card has no logo on it, or a mention of class 6. Just doesn't look like the one in the picture in the offer (amazon.com second hand) or like the google image results when i search for a class 6 16g microsd.
i wrote back... no answer. Anyway i'll try the fdisk, and see about the linux cd (whenever i figure out exactly what that is). anyway, next time i'll avoid second hand deals, it was too good to be true (30€ when the normal price is twice that).
Thanks for the info anyway, will look into fixing it, but it looks like i got a dodgy deal in the end.
if you paid on a credit card or via paypal you can get your money back, you should also be able to open a case through amazon too, but i have personally not done one through amazon before.
If your phone's rooted & has a decent ROM on it, you already have a linux environment that probably includes parted; that will do a fine job of removing existing partitions, re partitioning & formatting.
looks like its a scam card thars been hacked to lie about its size i have seen thos on usb drives. you could try gparted live cd and see if that helps at all.

I had the similar issue, where Windows Vista was showing a 2GB micro SD card as 40 MB. I tried all partitioning software for windows, but nothing works. Then I formatted the card in Mac, and now its showing 1.8GB. You can use some Linux bootable CD, wasting time on windows software is useless.
Try this before going and pirating something.

I think it should work on SD cards, I've used it on numerous HDD's.
I'm constantly using this - HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool at work to sort out cards and usb drives for people, also works to restore a drive after using it for a linux live usb drive.
Once installed right click and run as admin if using win 7

You wouldn't download a car, would you?
When you look at it in Vista, what does it say? It could be that you've actually partitioned it and formatted as NTFS which is unreadable on your phone.
Reformat
Take everything you have off the card first and install this http://www.multiupload.com/IBKQ1A2ENG
Click
Options
Format type - Full Rewrite
Format size adjustment - ON
OK
[ make sure your drive letter is the right one, don't want to format something else ]
Hit - FORMAT
This will wipe the entire card and rewrite it i done it with mine when i thought my ext was dead and just rewrote the entire card but took about 10 minutes for a 4GB so will take a while.
check this one

Anyone use one ?
I've got a Sandisk Class 10 "Ultra Android" one but it's been a bit .. flaky .. i suppose. I use winamp on my S2 and it occasionally hangs it to the point I need to reboot.
I'm wondering if it's just down to the number of tracks i've got on it - 8,500. Even though it's a class 10, I'm just wondering if selecting "Shuffle" when I start using it, it has a bit of a brain fart when faced with shuffling that many songs.
On the whole, when it's actually playing, it plays fine, but just wondering if anyone else has one and has had any issues ?
From what I have seen based on reviews of those cards just don't work well. I work in a store that sells them and I won't buy, but that's partially because I can't stand the thought of corrupting more than 16 GBs at one time.

I've always thought Sandisk was one of the more reliable brands. Interesting.
This says that my card is compatible with the S2
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/sandisk-mobile-ultra-microsdxc-memory-card-64gb-p32149.htm#compatibility
but then i've also read that the S2 can only cope with no more than 32gb.

I was also using a Sandisk 32gb Class 10 as well before this - I still have it.
I did remove the primary partition on this 64gb card and re-create it as a FAT32 partition so it would work.
I also flashed a Jellybean ROM to see if the handling would be better and to be honest, I think ICS has actually been better overall at handling the larger capacity.
I have a 32GB SanDisk Class 2 MicroSD. Even though it is super slow, it has been really reliable. I have experienced zero crashes or hangups.
well the card now seems to have completely given up on me.
i decided to move back to ICS so prepared everything as I normally do. I repeated the procedure of removing the primary partition and re-creating a formatted FAT32 partition which completed successfully. i tried formatting it in CWM and it failed to mount. I flashed Rootbox ICS 1.8 which flashed fine. After booting, I chose "Erase SD Card" which ran through and seemed to complete without any errors but when i plugged the USB in, the card fails to mount again.
Rebooted and found that when i mount USB storage in CWM, the SD Card is properly recognised and checks out as properly formatted to FAT32 but the phone just point blank refuses to mount it under any circumstances.
Also, I select the USB Storage to copy files, it mounts the phone just fine but no SD Card. When i turn USB Storage off, it tells me i have a damaged SD Card and do I want to re-format - so I do. It completes without any obvious errors but then still won't mount ..
Just hugely frustrated at the moment ..
Is there a point where i should just give up ?
The card formats absolutely fine and checks out when formatted through the PC but the phone just doesn't want to know, under ANY circumstances ..
ok i give up. i just don't know or understand what's happened. i've deleted and re-created the partition a dozen times with a dozen different parameters. each time it completes successfully and each time the card shows up in windows as correctly formatted but the phone refuses to recognise it at all.
i've tried the format32 program, paragon partition manager and minitool partition manager and all of them successfully format the card without error and each time the phone DOES NOT SEE IT.
so i give up. i'll put my 32gb one back in and decide what i want to do - i imagine i won't be able to return the card because it formats correctly and works correctly in windows so i guess i can always try it on ebay
now you know when you do something completely random at the end of a few hours of puzzling over something ?
i literally just randomly selected "partition sd card" in CWM recovery, selected the maximum values on each and it ran ok and completed. rebooted and went to "storage" and .. IT SAW THE CARD ..
so i rebooted back to CWM and selected "format external storage" and it's done it .. formatted it without an issue .. i'm a bit stunned
it's only showing up as 59gb free mind, but i think i can cope with that .. and i think that's about average for the free space on any storage as well .. i can cope

59GB is the right amout of storage.
Harddrive and storage manufacturers calculate hard drive sizes using Base 10, where 1000 bytes is one kilobyte. Computers, however, do everything in binary, which is base 2, where it takes 1024 bytes to store a kilobyte of data. In addition, the computer’s OS uses part of the drive for a directory to keep track of the actual data. The result is, the usable capacity of a hard drive is typically 90 to 93% of the advertised capacity

The games that have large amounts of data downloaded after installing the game, such as NFS Hot Pursuit, puts the extra 600MBs of data in the 12GB internal storage.
so is it not possible then?

Like was said, it needs to be reformatted to exfat. The fat32 architecture is actually 4 though.
If you don't have a computer you can do it under settings, and storage. I don't have a spare card to try at moment but I'll try when I get home.
How do you format it to exFAT though is my question.
Fat32 has a 4gb file limit, not 2gb, so that doesn't make a lot of sense that you can't go over 2gb. Also, most AOSP builds aren't going to support exFat, so that may not be the answer. Touchwiz does though, so if you stick with TW based roms, you should be alright.
From what I understood, the samsung micro SDXC cards were already coming formatted in exFat, so it seems odd you ended up with a Fat32 one. Anyhow, a while back microsoft put some limits on what formats you were natively allowed to format an external drive in. If memory serves, for USB memory you are only able to format in the file format that the drive is already formatted in. Gparted in linux will allow you to format in nearly any format, but I don't think exFat, as it is microsoft proprietary. I have seen windows utilities that allow you to format USB memory how you like, but I can't recall any names off hand.
Good Luck,
Jason

Not having tried, are you sending the files to your phone through MTP? As in the microsd card in the phone connected to the computer? Might be a file size restriction over MTP and you'll need a card reader.

I have never tried it. I went the opposite way, spent the time figuring out how to format my 64gb drives as Fat32. There are many times I have run into the 4gb limit as well though, and wished for something better.

yeah i havent tried it through a memory card reader. I was attempting to move the files through MTP.
Formatting into exFAT
If you have a 64gb card and you format it with your Note 2 it should automatically put it in an exFAT format, at least thats what it did for me so I am not sure if this happens everytime.
However, I do know how to format it into exFAT for sure using a free program available through CNET, let me find you a link.... *cue jeopardy music*
OK found it Its called the Mini Tool Partition Wizard - Home Edition
EDIT: Oh dammit. Sorry I cannot post the link as I have under 10 posts still. Just Google this "Mini Tool Partition Wizard Home Edition" without the parenthesis and usually the first result will be from download.com or CNET. Just use that
Have fun!
I'm rather a noob with Android and could use some help as I've only had my Verizon Galaxy S4 64GB since February. I'll try and provide as much information as I can so that I can get the proper help.
The problem I am having is that my internal memory is not calculating correctly. Instead of saying 64GB (minus GB for stock ROM size) it calculates to 32.00GB evenly. The phone was previously rooted via this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
I am not sure what I might have done to cause the incorrect storage amount so I'll mention some steps I took that could have been the underlying culprit to the problem.
While my phone was rooted I experienced problems with certain apps that were installed on the phone not being able to update due to the "insufficient storage" error. When this happened I would uninstall the app and re-install it which sometimes worked and other times the storage error continued and I would reinstall the app and all of its data via Titanium Backup.
After getting sick and tired with the "insufficient storage" error I tried clearing the cache for these apps both in application manager and also wiping the cache partition in recovery mode. When that didn't work I tried using the "wipe data/factory reset" option thinking that I could just re-install all my apps fresh and clean,...hopefully without the "insufficient storage" error.
In hindsight, that may not have been the best way to solve the problem. It was after doing all these steps that I first noticed my internal memory now read 32.00GB instead of a higher amount closer to 64GB.
Searching the web and these forums yielded no results to solving the problem,...only a few threads about SD card sizes not calculating correctly. (In case it matters, my SD card's total space is calculating correctly at 7.40GB available on a 8GB card.)
Then the KitKat update from Verizon came out and I decided to install it in hopes of it fixing the problem. In order to upgrade from Android 4.3 to Android 4.4.2 I had to unroot the phone because the upgrade wouldn't work on the phone when rooted. I unrooted using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209
I had trouble doing the No-Wipe method (2 failed attempts) and had to use the Full Wipe method. My SCH-I545 runs on VRUEMK2 and I was very careful in choosing the correct files (well, as certain as I can be). It successfully unrooted. However, the Full Wipe method did not help fix the internal memory problem once the phone was restored to its stock setting.
I installed Android 4.4.2 successfully but, again, the internal memory is not showing the right amount.
So,...can any of you wise and benevolent gurus help or have any ideas? It would be much appreciated.
My phone reads as follows:
Baseband version: I545VRUFNC5 (I noticed this is not VRUEMK2 as before. Is this due to the KitKat upgrade?)
Kernel version: 3.4.0
Build Number: KOT49H.I545VRUFNC5
Thanks in advance for your help. Let me know if you need any more information I might have missed.

Hi, decaturbob! I purchased the 64GB through my local Verizon Wireless store. They had to send away for it but they did have it. I don't know if it is something that is newly offered or by request but I did buy it quite recently (middle of February, 2014). I promise that the Total Space did read higher than 32.00GB before (and, yes, I know the difference between the internal memory and the SD card memory, in case anyone wonders). I just want to recover that space since I paid extra for it.
Decaturbob is right. There is no version on Verizon that has 64Gb of storage. They only have 16 and 32. My guess is that You have a 32gb s4 and an extra sd card installed which caused you to think you had higher than 32gb internal storage.

OK, I am not saying that isn't possible because I want to be open to all possibilities (including the notion that I really don't know what the hell I am talking about).
But if what you say is true, then why do I not see this extra SD card slot in the Storage menu? (My SD card currently reads 7.40GB available which is correct.) And why was my Total Space showing more than 32GB when I first bought the phone? Perhaps this hypothetical extra SD card was linked to the internal memory so they showed up as 64GB combined? If so, then I want that back! I can always go back to the guy who sold it to me, I guess, and see about replacing it,...although it WAS rooted and that may pose a problem even after I returned to the stock ROM, unrooted.
Or, let's put it this way,...if this was a 32GB phone that incorrectly calculated only 16GB of internal memory what would you advise that person to do?

OK, I am not saying that isn't possible because I want to be open to all possibilities (including the notion that I really don't know what the hell I am talking about).

Thanks, decaturbob. I installed diskusage and it showed 24747MiB for Storage Card and 7577MiB for /storage/extSdCard. No other cards were detected (as I didn't think there would be). Well, I am willing to accept that my phone is really a 32GB phone and not a 64GB as I have believed since purchase. Only one thing bothers me,...why did it read over 32GB when I first purchased the phone? Seriously, that was the first thing I checked when I got the phone was the storage capacity because that is what I wanted - 64GB. It makes no sense. And I don't do drugs. Really! I was very explicit about what I wanted with the Verizon rep and I paid an extra $200 over the 32GB model for it as I understood at the time. I just don't get it. I plan on taking it to Verizon after work and finding out exactly what the hell I payed for and received.
Thanks anyways to those of you willing to help. If anything you either got a good laugh out of this or, like me, will wake up screaming in the night over it. I suspect the first is more likely with you guys.

Take a look at your receipt...The 32gb s4 was a bunch more
sent by safestrap enabled bajarom
Not sure if this will work, but from an adb shell, do "su", then "cat /proc/partitions" and see what size mmcblk0 is reported to be. On my 16GB unit, it's 15388672 (1024 byte blocks = a bit less than 16 GB).
There's a VERY remote possibility that you flashed a 32 GB partition table (PIT) onto your phone, causing it to lose half the storage.
Why I say "very" is because Verizon never sold a 64 GB SCH-i545 to my knowledge, just 16 and 32 GB models.
And I think you would have remembered using ODIN to flash a new PIT file. Rooting alone didn't do this.
Any way that you could check the serial number to find out if it was a 64Gb?

Have you looked on your receipt or the side of the box the phone came in? It should say either 16 or 32

I took the phone back to Verizon Wireless. It is a 32GB phone according to the serial number. They said that they keep stock of both 16 and 32GB phones and that the sales rep who took three days and supposedly ordered the 64GB model for me was fired a few weeks back for rooting (or offering to root) customer phones on the side. I don't really know what is up with the whole thing but they did give me $300+ back that I was apparently overcharged. Whatever. I'll just buy a 32 or 64GB SD Card for the extra memory I wanted. Not the way I wanted to do it but,...oh well.
Thanks to all who gave ideas, suggestions and other input.

Wow huh what a shady deal that all turned out to be. That's great you got money back though. I use both a Transcend and SanDisk 64g cards in both S4's I have. Both cards have treated me very well. Got them in Amazon for cheap too

Formatted ext sd via recovery...now I can't install, add or even format. I tried on pc and with twrp again by even using repair and changing file system. Anyone know how I can format this card? It's a 64 gb SanDisk. I can't find any solid solutions online. Thanks.

I have no idea of your hardware, but 64gb is where the switch from SD-HC changed to SD-HC (technically 32 can be either, but generally 32 are HC) and older hardware that didn't explicitly support XC wouldn't work... It either doesn't see it at all or sometimes it will work until you get to 32gb, then you can't write any more data.. I have older SD readers that so both.
But any phone or reader for the last 3-5 yrs handle XC, which has a theoretical 2tb limit, SanDisk has a 400gb microSD.. Insane.
Anyway that's all moot if it used to work in your phone and reader, but just doesn't anymore. Mostly if they're pre-formatted is exFat. If you formatted in TWRP I think it probably defaults to ext4, but TWRP can do a variety of formats.
I got to say though, if you can't reformat it again and TWRP that doesn't sound promising. Perhaps there is an Android app that will let you format with more control than the default tool (I have no idea since the last phone I had with SD was a Droid running GB)
Sorry I didn't really offer a solution, I have had problems with micro SD cards in general with generic brands... But I generally format them in the device I'm using them with and then I have a small USB thumb drive size thing that the micro SD card goes completely inside of and windows generally mounts whatever format it might be, provided drivers are installed.
Also sorry this is so long-winded I tend to do that when I'm voice dictating...
If you have more info that might be helpful drop a line. It doesn't take much to bugger up a microSD card though. Could be as simple as damage (static or physical) when removing it from the phone and putting it in the computer. But the proximity of time when formatted to not working makes that unlikely.
And I'm rambling again.
Cheers.

Well the Windows machine won't read ext4 without third-party software... But I don't see why that would keep you from formatting again. And if TWRP does the same thing, errors out, then I got think the card's had it.
If you're trying to use it in the phone you should leave it in ext4, but if you're trying to use it and windows you could try to format it exFat in TWRP.

Nothing really.
I am curious though. Can you give me specs on the card brand/model/serial?
Also, I have had good results with UFS Explorer Recovery pulling data when nothing else will. I think there's a free trial, but you plobably have to pay for it to do anything other than verify it 'can' successfully recover, not sure, but if it is data that you need, it is good.
I only ask about the card because I found in the past I bought like three identical adata brand SD cards and one appeared to be DOA and I couldn't do anything with it and lo and behold adata had found a firmware thing that they could actually fix and they had a tool that did it.
If you want to go down a rabbit hole there is a sticky XDA thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1355528&page=2 with various degrees of helpfulness. Its a little dated, but the ideas are sound for most of it.
Really i just googled "sd card bad after formatting twrp" and lost 2 hrs...
Let me know if you have any success, I realize this is either about data or just personal curiosity like mine... Because a probably sub $20 card is not worth this kind of investment... And if its a high end part, probably has lifetime warranty..

Did you request RMA?
https://kb.sandisk.com
I'm not sure if they are lifetime warranty or not, i have a couple ultra plus cards from Costco that were lifetime warranty.
Now on the less ethical side, if it's a current model, plckup a new one then swap/return. But obviously thats evil.
