FYI i have oden as well as the current drivers for the phone.

Once there you can continue to follow steps to get to latest and greatest rom, or simply stay at stock. Your choice.
Also, just as an fyi, make sure your wifi is turned off when you try to get updates OTA from Verizon.
i am stock, other than being rooted. thats the part i cant figure out. it should update OTA with no problems. all i have doen is root so i can use "other" programs not in the market place.

+1 I'd do this just to be positive. Something isn't right there. THOUGH, while OTA updating I have gotten that same error, but it wasn't for very long at all, just Verizon's servers being shotty. Odin back, it will wipe everything. OR, I am running the 2.2 Community ROM, and it is amazing, your choice. I doubt you'll be seeing many more 2.2 ROMS coming out.
going to give this a try. to bad it takes so long for this stuff to DL. should have it done by this afternoon.
From what a Verizon tech was telling me it wont work rooted and just to prove he actually knew what he was talking about he told me just how well they can actually track stuff. He told me i activated my fascinate on Feb 8th, that's true, then he told me on Feb 16 I rooted my fascinate and voided the warranty, also true, but HOW THE HELL DID HE KNOW THAT, so if he says it wont work with your phone being rooted, i now believe him. So i went back to bone stock DI01 and started updating. ED01 update took like 3 hours to OTA DL for me.

I'm not sure if I'm the only one who is having this problem but I've searched around and can't fix the issue. I recently had CM9 but went back to complete stock, on 2.3.4 (which isn't up to date). When I go to update from the settings menu, I get a communication failed text box, which then in turn makes me wait 24 hours before checking again.
I've done multiple battery pulls and stopped the running process for the software update to no avail. Can anyone help me with this?
Remember, I'm on the stock AT&T rom.

I think others were having trouble updating as well... I'd suggest flashing a custom rom, or if you want to stay with stock, using Entropy's Back to Stock packages (I'm not going to link that for you cause I'm too lazy and you should be able to find it.)

Might give it a try. Trouble is, not having a rooted phone and going back to stock means I lose all applications and data with them. Eh. Thanks
Download stock rom (if u can get a tar file it most likely has everything u need, do some Googling just make sure its for the i777). Get mobile odin pro. Use mobile odin pro to flash the .tar and it gives u the option to root right there within the app before u flash. Profit. Just giving my two cents and what worked for me . If u do this though and don't remove any system apps it should allow u to ota upgrade. Haven't tried myself but that sounds like it'd work fine.

I already did this except for rooting about 3 weeks ago. From what you're saying, if I root my phone from its current state I should be able to receive OTA updates? I'm willing to root just to see but I don't see how that would fix the "communication failed" errors for updates.

FYI I have a rooted stock ROM, and I'm having difficulty doing an OTA update also. Different error (mine is "interrupted" after reboot). I posted it here because it seemed more related to that thread and I had other Q's about the process.
You guys are in panic mode, wait till we actually get an ANNOUNCEMENT for ICS from AT&T, then try to go back to stock using the methods we have.
No reason to do so right now, since AT&T will probably take a long time before pushing it.
We have a possible sources dropping on March 15th from i9100 but you will be required to be rooted to flash the possible ICS Roms that will be available after that date.

You might want to check the (Guide)How to flash custom binaries.....on this forum. Creepycrawly has posted a reply towards the end of the thread that might be helpful. Believe its on one of the last two pages.
As has been said many times in other threads, even on a stock ROM if you have rooted and removed even one item of bloatware or made any other mods you will not be able to download an OTA update.
I have not rooted my phone. And as I said earlier, I restored my phone to complete stock meaning no bloatware has been removed. I'm still at a loss for what to do

You were on CM9 (in a later post you say CM7), but you went back to stock UCKH7. Now you are unable to update over the air to UCKK6. You are mainly interested in having the phone ready to receive the update over the air to ICS, whenever that occurs. You have not rooted the phone since you returned to stock but you are willing to try root if it will help the update happen. You were also concerned about loosing apps and their data since you are not rooted. I recapped all this because on stock you should be able to run the update. To help you solve the problem, need to know all the facts.
I've done the following, although it has been several months ago, about a week or two after UCKK6 first released. From running a custom rom, I did a wipe data/factory reset, flashed stock UCKH7 plus root, and ran the over the air update to UCKK6 successfully, retaining root on UCKK6. I just did this to test it out, so after completing the test, I used my nandroid backup to return to the custom rom I was on.
I would assume that you did a wipe data/factory reset either before or after you flashed back to stock? If not, there could be traces left over that could interfere with the update process. I'm not sure if there could be traces left even after a wipe data/factory reset, but the Cyanogen Mod file structure is so very different than stock that it wouldn't be inconceivable.
Next, I would wonder how soon after flashing back to stock you tried to run the update, and if not immediately, what action could have possibly placed or removed files that would intefere with the process.
I'm pretty certain that if you were to wipe data/factory reset with a format and then flash stock again, and then try to run the update immediately, it would succeed. So there has to be something in the file system preventing it. You may not find it easy to correct that something manually. You may just have to do a wipe data/factory reset, and maybe a format, and then start all over with a fresh install.
Of course, that is the reason for rooting first. Root, then back up everything with titanium backup, SMS backup, export contacts, etc. and save all that to your computer. Then you can restore stuff after.
Thanks creepy,
I'm in the process of doing what you said. I rooted my phone, backed up everything I thought needs to be backed up and flashed the stock rom (2.3.4 kernel version 2.6.35.7 baseband version I777UCKH7). I still need to do a factory format in order to see if that will fix the update problem.
Question. Is the firmware version(s) above the latest AT&T software? According to Kies, it is. But I am reading other places that the latest software is android 2.3.6.
Did exactly as creepy stated. Brought the phone back to stock software and did a factory reset. Without ANY customization and as soon as the phone booted up, I did the software update and had the same thing, "Communication failed" (says there is an update available but servers are busy).
I give up.
Well, I don't have any new ideas. Maybe if I get some time in the next few days I'll try it on my phone to see what happens. It has been a while since I tried it. Maybe the server behaves differently now?

From what I've been reading on AT&T forums (http://forums.att.com/t5/Samsung/Sa...2-3-6-OTA-update-now-live/td-p/2996495/page/3) I don't think so. I've been trying every combination I can think of to make this thing work but I honestly have no idea. I was extremely surprised when I brought the phone back to complete stock and no root and still couldn't get the update.
If ICS ever comes to AT&T GS2, I'll wait a month or so to keep trying then I might resort to going to an AT&T store to get a replacement. Who knows
I came from motorola phones so I'm used to locked bootloaders and the methods of hacking them. I've had the Rezound for almost 3 months now, and I'm currently running cleanROM 2.3. A few days ago I see we had a new ics leak, and from what I'm guessing, the rom bases have been updated for it. I'd like to flash the rooted leak, and install an ics rom, but I have a few questions. If I'm on ics already, what steps should I take? Do i have to go back to gb, and relock, or can I flash it through the current rom I'm on? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Wrong section bud, we have a Q & A
check out the 1st/2nd post on Wildstang's Twizted rom page. Very friendly instructions.

Here is the link from CleanRom to prepare you for new base ROMs:
http://www.scottsroms.com/showthread.php/856-HOW-TO-Prepare-for-CleanROM-4-0-Update?p=6527
It will take a while to flash and make sure you do reboot to boot loader the 2nd time so it flashes clean, but I would suggest backing up your SD card and internal storage. Good luck. I love the new leak, in the form of Clear ROM.
I'm having a bit of trouble updating my Rezound. I got the file named correctly and HBOOT detects it, however it loads/checks the RUU (blue/gold bars on the right) and then just goes back to the normal HBOOT menu without any error message or anything changing. I have relocked my Rezound.. Unsure of what else I can do. Any ideas?
You need to enter bootloader a second time for it to complete the full install.
It still isn't doing what it should be. It goes through loading/checking and then back into the normal bootloader menu. I then tried going into fastboot and back into bootloader, and the same process happened again. I also tried rebooting bootloader after it did the load/check process, but i'm not making any progress. By that, I mean it does the same exact thing.
After going through it the second time, what was the screen showing for your radio and hboot versions? Can't remember what the updated #'s off the top of my head but the radio should not be the .95### version.
Figured out the issue. I used an md5 checker and it came out wrong. guess I should try redownloading.. Must have gotten cutoff or something?
Sorry I got back so late, but thanks for the help everyone! Sorry about my post placement, I'm used to Droid forums and their Rezound section doesn't have a Q&A. Searching does help, but like I said, all of this dev support is a bit; overwhelming coming from a phone with little dev support, so people who can break it down for me are awesome.

Some advise
I will chime in and say that it is definitely worth it. As said before in the CleanROM thread Scott has a very detailed step by step guide. Just a few pointers before you jump in.
1) make sure you have a card reader for your computer that you can connect your removable micro-SD card to. Trust me, if you screw up somewhere in the process, having a reliable way to access the SD card is a life saver.
2) before flashing always wipe/factory reset 3 times, some think it is overkill, but if you end up with some odd glitch or bug when you just wiped once, you will most likely have to wipe and flash again to get rid of the bug...so of course you are actually saving time and hassle by just doing it 3 times in the first place.
3) make sure your battery is full or almost full before you start the process, you will avoid many problems by not having your phone battery die in the middle of a flash or update.
4) read, read and read again all the information and the instructions on what you are going to be doing, then make sure you understand and are comfortable Before you actually start. Reading through the forums and knowing beforehand what others have experienced, and the fixes, will make your life 100% better while you play with your phone.
All that said, the new RUU is awesome, better radio reception, better battery life for most (once you drain and recharge a few times), and ICS is very cool on the Rezound. Happy flashing people and hope you like ICS as much as I do.
I'm trying to get my note back to original stock GB so I can ota upgrade to ICS.
I did a complete 'backup' of the original rom before I started messing around, and now, no matter what I do, I can't get that backup to reinstall on the phone.
I've done a lot of searching around, and found many threads about getting notes back to AT&T stock, and am very wary about doing that.
I've also found a few threads about getting back to original bell stock firmware etc, but whenever I run the files through odin, I get wierd errors (some with chinese writing), and just get frustrated.
I liked a few of the custom rom's I found, but the crazy thing, is the spen gestures (specifically the double-tap with button down for quick memos) are just too important to be without. I got the phone for work, and thought those where neat 'features'. Well.. seems I can't live without them.
But NOTHING I can find helps. I've tried methods listed on rootgalaxynote.com to unroot and get back to stock, and everything looks fine till I try either ota updating or kies updating. The phone simply isn't recognized in kies, and the ota update says nothing is available. and I know it IS available, cause I did the upgrade just after it was released, before I did all this custom rom stuff.
I'm start to get at my wits end. I simply want my original stock firmware etc. back on the phone, upgraded to ICS, and then I can just forget about everything else.
Is there anyone that can help?
P.S. if you know of any links I may have overlooked, please just post them. Believe me when I say I've spent well over a week just browsing the forums and google, doing searches etc. Its entirely possible it's something obvious that I just didn't see... with my 3 older kids and a newborn, I'm getting almost zero sleep, and am constantly frazzled. I sometimes don't even realize my wife is talking to me (on the worse days).
Anyways, thanks for anyone's help.

If I'm you I would continue with a custom rom. GNote replaces what you want. You can always install a TW based ROM. What I do is have Gnote as a shortcut on my homescreen. With Gnote I can still write with my Spen. Personally, I'd never use a NON-JB Paranoid ROM. ICS has melted over the summer! Being able to tweak my DPI settings is very important for me for each app. The default DPI and screen layouts are too fricken big, ie; status bar and icons. My eyes are still fine so I don't everything humongous on my screen.
Make sure you have Odin3 v1.85 on your pc. Download the Bell ICS ROM from here:
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/163095548/c1447e9/I717MUGLF4_I717MBMCLF4_BMC.zip.html
Unzip it on your pc. Restart your phone to Download Mode (Hold "Volume Down" and "Power" to start your phone). Once in download mode connect to your pc and start Odin. Put the ROM.MD5 file in the PDA slot that you just unzipped and update away.
This will give you the Bell ICS stock ROM. Better than the OTA when it comes to rooting it. If you have been reading for a week then I am sure you know what that means.
SOLVED
Thanks for the tips/suggestions.
I did a little more reading, and came to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599127
Flashed the kernal/system/recover like it said, and still a nogo. So then I figured wth, lets flash modem too.
BAM. booted it back, and its currently snagging the ota update.
So now that I have the methods and files to get back to stock, I am no longer worried too much about the future. I did have paranoid 2.0 for a while, and was loving it, but the simple idea of doubletapping while in ANY app to get a quick memo was still missing. Maybe after a bit I'll be hating the touchwiz ui yet again, and need a change. But at least I know now how to get back to stock.
Go figure. The thread itself looks vaguely familiar from earlier in the week, but I for some reason must have skipped it. I just got off a nice nap my wife let me have, and HEY... i figured it out. Guess 'sleep' is actually kinda important
Modem is the most important part for having you phone recognized properly for the OTA update. Link I gave you would have given you the update.
I got the S4 back when it first came out, and messed around with some CM ROMs and other custom ROMs that worked fairly well. The big killers for me though were bluetooth audio not working, not being able to use headphone microphones, and the proximity sensor being all weird. So I reverted to stock but kept root, and eventually upgraded to MJ7 while keeping root. When I boot I still get the 'Samsung Custom' bootscreen.
I've never been happy with Touchwiz, and have all of the Samsung features turned off. The stock messaging app is really the thing that bugs the hell out of me, since it takes forever to get messages (sometimes up to an hour, while Handcent will get them right away), and I love my Nexus 7 experience. I'd really like to get as close to a 'Google' phone as possible, but I'm currently stuck on Verizon.
I've tried using GooManager to download the recovery managers again, but it's having problems with 404 errors downloading the scripts. I tried ROM Manager and it says it installs ClockworkMod (6.0.44 in fact), but it refuses to boot into recovery mode. Most of the tools I'm finding are not for MJ7, so I'm kind of hesitant to solutions that aren't for my current version. Since I can't make any backups without being able to boot into a proper recovery mode, that's another kind of notch against using most of the guides.
I don't mind the actual process of doing the work, I'm just not sure where to go from here. What are my options?

Well unfortunately for you you're on MJ7 which means your only options right now are rooting and Xposed. Other than that though, there's really nothing else you can do at the moment. If you were on ME7 or MI1 still you could at least run Safestrap, but even then you would be limited to Touchwiz based roms. Unless you're willing to go on the hunt for an MDK S4 you'll just have to deal with your limited options for now. Oh and before you ask, there is absolutely no way to revert back to earlier firmwares. Once you update, you're stuck.

Yeah, I know I couldn't revert the firmware to something earlier. Is it possible to revert to stock even? At this point I think I just want to revert it and sell this phone off and get something else. I don't care about KNOX status, just getting it back to stock so that whomever buys it won't keep getting security notifications.

Yes I believe it's possible, I found this thread that gives you an Odin image to flash: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507217
The security notification was actually fixed and supposedly an update was pushed out, but maybe yours didn't grab the update properly? I'm not sure, but that Odin image should get you back to factory stock. If I were you I would get an HTC One if you can live with not having a removable battery and sd card.
Awesome, thank you very much.
I'm re-flashing today take it back. I'll have a look at the HTC One, since it wasn't out when I got my S4. I know that (at the time) the S4 was the only Android phone I had found, with the One a close second but not available. I would really love a Google phone, but I get the feeling that will probably never happen on VZW.
Maybe I just haven't been able to find anything on this, but here is the quick version.
Rooted this phone when I bought it in May. Working perfectly running Hyperdrive releases the whole time.
Last Thursday morning, I flashed to version 12. Spent the next 3 days fixing it. First, the system ui wasn't working, so everything stopped about every 8 seconds until I acknowledged it each time.
Then I totally screwed up and had the kies error and could do nothing.
Now, I am back to stock, looked at the build (which I never initially did) and notice that it is me7.
If I hold up/home/power, I get the Samsung logo, but then it enters bootloader. I haven't re flashed anything else, but will. Just not sure what.
Update. Also, I can't seem to re root. I was hoping for some suggestions.....
I figured that someone might have a question or may know how to find value in my situation, so I am posting this, since I have found no others that have stated the same.
I am busy enough that I couldn't search everything, so if this has already been addressed somewhere else, my apologies.
Another Update. ..
ok, I am dumb. I was able to use the work around. Just took 10 times. Sorry for the wasted reading!
