Hi everyone,
I know 60 fps is a great thing on a smartphone. But with dual cores and high performance GPUs , it would be great to lift the FPS cap that is placed on Galaxy S II and SGS1.
How is it possible to lift the FPS cap on SGS II ? Is it something which can be done once we have the source code for the 2.3.3 which Galaxy S II comes with?
Tegra 2 equipped devices have a limit of over 80 FPS.
I dont want this fix to increase the already ridiculously high Quadrant scores (doesn't equate to real life performance anyway). I want to see how the games would run if the FPS cap is lifted?

Quite likely slower. Big change the screen has a refresh rate of 60 FPS. A danger when running @ higher FPS (aside from the battery use and overheating) is that you may get frame stutter. You shouldn't, but I've seen it happen on more mobile devices.
How come the LG Optimus 2X does 80 fps? is it something to do with the screen refresh ratio of an LCD vs SuperAMOLED ?

They're cheating to get higher benchmark scores.
Capping the frame rate is a good thing, the only reason to uncap it is to find the technical benchmark prowess of the device and not for actual usage.

Anything higher than the screen refresh rate is a waste of battery used to calculate non-displayed images.
Optimus 2x cheats benchmarks like that.

Lol... yes please, we need a patch to leech the battery for nothing...
We really need a higher score in a useless benchmark to prove who has the longest one...
/sarcasm off
Damn guys, having the best phone is not enough? You need a totally useless patch just to boost a score (you won't even notice it... except the battery drain)...
Talking about a cap -.- My x10 has a 32fps cap be happy you guys haven't got that.
some people are just greedy.. why in the world would you need to go past 40 FPS let alone 60???
For the benchmarks? If you want to really benchmark the phone go and use a benchmarking app that has a benchmarking test that has actual textures to draw in the test, unlike CRAPPPPPY bench like Quadrant.

every phone in the last few years have screens with physical limits of 60 FPS. nexus one, nexus s, desire, etc all of them have screens which max out at 60 fps as a physical limitation of the screen. i doubt the super amoled plus will be any different, so it likely has the same physical limitation as well. no way to increase it.

Of course you can make the phone produce more than 60 frames per second. But the display cannot show all of them. Except for 120Hz 3D LCDs, no LCD I know of has more than 60Hz. And it doesn't make sense to render more frames than the display can show, so the software locks it down to a maximum of 60 (VSync). This way it conserves battery and reduces heat production.
The LG 2X doesn't display more than 60Hz either, but Nvidia, not new to the game of benchmarking, decided to increase the number of produced (not displayed!) frames in order to win with benchmarks.
It is theoretically possible to do the same with the SGS2, thus creating an apples to apples comparison.
I hope some reviews like Anandtech will be able to do that. But the average Joe really doesn't.
So again, it is a software limitation set in place to get the best results from the given hardware.
Original GS already has a patch that uncap the fps to allow more than 60fps...

Is the 1.45mhz overclock worth it? Or is that only beneficial to pointless benchmark results?
How is it on the battery? Is the 1.3 overclock more of a intermediate between battery and performance.
Sent from my ATRIX...I do miss my Desire though....maybe I should dust it off....lol
Everyday use, not really, it even kills the battery more.
thought so! probably makes the phone heat up more than it does normally.
There is almost no visible difference to the naked eye but it does make things a little bit snappier. As far as i am concerned, my battery life is epic with Faux's latest Kernel on the latest version of CM7 beta.
Epic= 24+ depending on usage.
Only differences I have seen is the benchmark scores are rock sky high!
However, for everyday use, the difference is that when webpage is loading, panning and pinch zooming while is loading is as smooth once the page is fully loaded. if it is back to 1GHz, it will lag on some pages when you try to zoom and pan.
If you use beautiful widget, the weather animation for the moon and the rain will become a little more fluid if you are on 1.45GHz.
Other than that, you have just built a hand held water boiler XD
Benchmarks are much better with 1.30. At 1.45 the boost is negligible in comparison.
Real use I don't see enough difference to consider it 'cost effective'.

Well I've had mine for only a few days now so I don't think I can rate the battery for now.
Battery Life - ?
Speed - 4
Performance - 4
Build Quality 4
Overall 4.5
PROS -
Great camera in daylight conditions
Stunning design (mine is white)
Display Sharpness and the vibrant colors
Effortless performance
Beautiful UI
Good Audio Quality for a smartphone
Fast Capture is helpful
Build Quality is commendable since its all plastic
Matte Finish on the body and the anti stain coating
Front Camera is awesome
Clear and loud call quality
GPS performance is good
CONS
Some lag here and there at times
Android 4.0 still 2 or 3 weeks away
Camera is almost useless in low light conditions
Touch sensitive buttons can get quite irritating sometimes
Though SQ is good, volume could be higher
Screen could have done with more contrast. Blacks are Greyish
Battery Life 4
Speed 5
Performance 4
Build quality 5
Overall 4
Pro:
-fast and accurate gps
-Stock firmware (73) is quite "okay"
-Good cam quality overall (except the noise)
-HDMI out with TV Program software works good
-Phone is a lightweight compared to others
-Screen protector by factory
Contra:
-Non-removable battery
-screen contrast could be much better
-sony data cable / microusb cable is "cornered" at phone's end. That is idiotic.
-Autobrightness doesn't work - for me ( stock 73)
Gesendet von meinem LT26i mit Tapatalk 2
Battery Life -5 (.73 fixes the issues, and it could only get better)
Speed - 5 (I still have sometimes a hiccup or two, but that can be android itself of the junk I install, so I will keep it at 5 )
Performance- 5 (same reason as above)
Build quality- 4 (build could aways be better, its a sturdy device but not as durable as it could be I think)
Overall - 4.7
Pros:
Beautiful Design, I find it a really unique device
Screen is fantastic
Blazing fast. I love the speed combined with the Sony UI, I used to use launcher pro, but I can't bring myself to replace the default launcher.
Cons:
The screen problems in some devices, I feel they could have taken more care with assembly.
The port flaps, I am still not sure if this is a real con, as they are really sturdy (unlike the X10 cover, which broke off in the end) and they just need to be worn in I guess :/.
Gingerbread, though that also I wouldn't really consider a con, as the update is coming, and I am in no rush really (coming from the X10 I'm used to waiting, heh)
I know this is more to taste, but I find the default NFC app could be better, and I wish (I'm assuming they did this to mostly prevent piracy) the extra apps (PS store, music/movie unlimited) had support worldwide, as it was one of the boasted selling features.
I love this phone, and definitely recommend it. It is in my opinion one to look out for, especially when it gets ICS. I am more than happy to have this for the next two years (got it on contract). I know Sony gets criticism for not using the top of the line tech, but in terms of design, I think they are ahead of the market, and I am curious how next years device will look.
Battery Life - 4
Speed - 4
Performance - 4
Build quality - 3
Overall 3.5
Pros
High resolution, sharp display
Stylish ui
Sound quality
Camera
Design
GPS locks really fast
Wireless signal of wifi and 3g network
Charges fast
Performance overall is good
Cons
Quality control, many early models have yellow stains on screen
Casing has a lot of seams and edges. Makes it feel cheap, hope it is just sloppy work on earlier models.
Warranty service. To fix the yellow tint and casing I'll probably lose it for a month
Call volume is a bit low
Screen viewing angels are poor
Colour temprature of the screen is a bit off, too cold.
Placement of usb/hdmi port

I've had mine for over a month so can safely judge.
Battery life 1
Can't stand the fact the phone depletes so much even on standby.
Speed 4.5
Most things happen near enough instantly
Performance 3
Mainly because I can't stand the UI performance and the poor scrolling especially in web browser. What's this 2010? Come on Sony, you can surely do better. Galaxy S2 is a year older with buttery smooth transitions and scrolling.
Build quality 4.5
Feels solid and premium. Could have done with a bit more chrome to soften things up though. Also very doggy back cover that doesn't seem to fit properly,
Overall 3.25
That's just about right in my opinion. The phone needs better software and optimization. I'm happy with it for now. Don't know if I'll be happy with it for two years however,

- Battery life 4,5: good idle battery drain (0,5 - 0,7% per hour)
- Speed 5: everything happens very fast once you customised and tweaked the stock .73 rom
- Performance 4.5: after tweaking it's fast, even no lag when opening contacts app but I know ICS will increase performance even more
- Build quality: 4.5: I really like the design and quality of the phone, it's not heavy and pretty scratch resistant
- Overall: 4.6: Sony gave is a really good phone which is fast and smooth. It doesn't feel like a cheap phone like Samsung phones, and the design is really amazing. And last but not least, it's very nice to develop for this phone

Custom ROMs > Stock ROM
Hello All,
I've had my LT26i for a few days now, and you know of course how it is when you get a new piece of IT equipment for an IT guy... Tried this and that, tried different ROMs, now eagerly waiting for CM9 RC1, wona know what it looks like at least and what it's capable of. Failed to install RC0, tried all the possible ways, but can't pass the boot screen. Doing something wrong of course, but...
In any case, the Stock ROM has too much extra IMHO. Apps that i can't remove and will never use annoy me... Knowing that uninstalling will free up some RAM and cut down the number of running processes, knowing that tweaking LEDs, WIFI management will increase the battery life, etc. forced me to star searching for a custom ROM that will suit me the same day I got my phone.
So I would rate the Stock ROM the following:
Battery Life - 3 (really runs out faster then expected)
Speed - 4 (boot up could be faster, opening apps is OK tho)
Performance - 4 (screen sometime freezes for a millisecond when sliding the desktops)
Build quality - 4 (being not able to delete stuff I don't need freaked me out... Why am I a guest in my phone?)
Overall - 4 (would be 3, but it's my new phone, got to like it )
And the ROM that I am using now (KA05 Xperia SSpeed by krabappel2548 on DooMKernel v03a by DooMLoRD):
Battery Life - 5 (Impressed)
Speed - 5 (No complains here at all)
Performance - 5 (Extra functionality such as better camera and volume buttons wake the screen)
Build quality - 4 (no crashes or anything, but can't install apps from my phone, have to do it from the PC)
Overall - 5 (I am much more happy using my SXS now)
There are other Custom ROMs, some focus on the GUI, some on the speed... All of them are definitely worth to be installed.
I really appreciate the work of all the guys working hard to get us better Android Distros.
P.S.: Yes, I did lose my warranty when I rooted my phone. Yes, I did have problems installing prerequisite ROMs and Booters and all. But now I have a much better understanding how my phone functions and I have a better Android Distro. I AM NOT PUSHING ANYONE TO GO CUSTOM, AS IT IS DANGEROUS IF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
P.P.S.: If anyone managed to install the CM9 RC0, please post a video on YouTube so that we at least know what it looks like.
I Found This In A N4 Thread.
Just Add This Line To build.prop And Reboot.
Code:

Does this have any other benefits beyond benchmark
I've had some interesting results enabling this.
I havent run any benchmarks, but running GTA Vice City with this enabled does make for smoother gameplay, but also gives minor graphical tearing .
As far as I know, our screens are only 60hz. Anything above 60fps is almost pointless and would cause more harm than not. Yes, you may see smoother gameplay, but you're overworking the GPU for a slight boost and visual problems.
I'm not a developer or anything of the sort from Android but I do a LOT of tinkering and programming with computers so I expect the same results since smart phones are Pretty much the same.
Sent from my CM10.2 LG-E970
I would wager this is harmful.... As the user above me pointed out they're no gains to be had in terms of usage.
Outside of that it's one thing to go past 60 fps on a desktop or even laptop designed to handle more intense graphics but, there is no exhaust in your phone which works twice as hard for no real reason.
The excess heat just increases your chances of nasty things happening.. And I mean nasty you need a new phone before 2 years type things.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
Warning heeded... I don't game though I just like to tweak. I never use intense graphics for long stretches and it makes a difference in short bursts when I'm browsing video heavy sites or watching short videos (placebo, maybe). I'm also a benchmark whore (no shame). I expect to not make two years anyway. .. G2 is sweet and who knows what will be here by next summer, lol. Thanks though.

You may be thinking refresh rate... that's the screen measurement. I've never seen one for a phone. Fps is video source measure, chip. I'm definitely no techy, but would it cause that much more heat... it's not overclocking (although I am) just running at higher speeds longer, maybe. No extra heat yet, mhl for movies most intense thing I've done since tweak though.

Ok, time to clear some stuff up. Unless specifically stated in a lcd display's specifications, and it was made in the last few years, it only supports up to a 60hz refresh rate. No matter what you do, you can't make it refresh faster. You'll just get screen tearing and your GPU will consume more electricity and generate more heat. This isn't a cathode ray tube display with adjustable refresh rate.

Frame rate/Refresh rate the same?
I was just wondering if frame rate and refresh rate are both the same. For example in a PC if the screen's refresh rate is , say 60 Hz. Won't it be able to display anything with frame rates greater than 60? If so, I beleive it applies to the mobiles too. Can someone clear up this mystery for me with some citations?
Thanks

Correct and as Death said, it'll cause screen tearing on mobile devices. 60fps matches the 60hz of our screens. I'm not too familiar with how this works on Android, but if you could raise the fps to about 65 then you'd notice a boost in performance when it comes to games. 60 is ideal for gaming but with the cap at 60 it tends to dip below frequently and causes slight lag. 65 would make everything stay nice and smooth and shouldn't give you any graphical errors as well as not burning battery life.

mmm.. i'm sorry but i think that you're confusing fps caps with vertical synch, fps caps give almost no fps drops because it only throw away every frame superior to the cap, but with vsync caps it to 60fps but it synchronize it with the lcd hz, fps caps can cause tearing even at same framerate than lcd hz but vsync doesn't

A fps cap does not discard frames. It will not render the extra frames. The GPU will fills it's clocks with NOP instructions until it needs to render the next frame.
Wouldn't this be useful if someone has attached his smartphone to External display , which supports displays with higher refresh rates .:good:
For me, the only slight disappointment is the lack of 120Hz at the highest resolution. I heard conflicting rumors on that, and I was hoping things would end up the other way. But not a huge deal, really.
Everything else was what I'd hoped! Got the + version of the snapdragon, price was reasonable for what it is, pre-order deals are sweet enough to entice me, new s-pen features look exciting, it got the new Gorilla Glass I hoped for, it's for every hardware spec I could want (maybe 5000 mAh battery would be cooler, but whatever, battery life is plenty with the past devices for me), beautiful finishes (the matte bronze... Awesome... But why does the Ultra not get that sweet green variety??), amazingly low response time on s-pen, integration with Windows/Microsoft/Xbox, phenomenal camera specs (I don't need 100 times meaningless digital zoom), got the laser autofocus thing to help speed up focusing... This thing is perfect, basically.
If I could build the perfect phone, it'd be this one with an IR blaster, fingerprint scanner on the back (or improved in-screen), camera under screen instead of punchout, slightly larger battery, and 256GB base storage. Maybe 16GB of RAM just to be ridiculous. MAYBE a slightly higher optical zoom. But now I'm just being picky. This is as close to perfect as I've seen a phone be in my lifetime.
Same here. [email protected] Hope they enable it (if it's capable) with an update. Seeing the S20 has not gotten it, I'm not holding my breath. Odd that that specific item took away all the excitement I had for this device.
You honestly can't notice a difference when you change resolutions. I looks good and feels really snappy either way. I've been using it for 3 weeks now and its been just fine for me.

I really thought they'd add it just to differentiate it from the S20 Ultra some more. Not too big a deal though. I just peeked for fun, and I was running my Note10+ on 1080p without realizing it. Haha.
I'm still pumped for that smooth scrolling, 5G, 9ms latency on s-pen, and the overall beauty of that phone.

(Instead of reducing the thickness of the N20U coming from the S20U, Sammy most probably could have retained the same thickness or even made it little thicker to have the same 5000 mAh b).

As for battery, on the plus side the better screen type, better CPU, and the dynamic refresh rate should balance the scales. I bet battery life will exceed the S20 Ultra, actually!
The FP scanner is tolerable but I would have LOVED to hear about improvements. So there's a better one out there?? Man... What a missed opportunity.

It being LTPO, adaptive RR is the whole and lone advantage I think for batterylife. And "plus" version of the SD SoC drains more battery than the vanilla one is what I know of, as the cores are clocked higher. This adaptive/dynamic RR would be a big plus and SD version will have good batt. life considering all factors even though batt. is now small.
Batt. endurance isn't/wasn't looking good in the Exynos counterparts in the S20 series. Will it be better this time around with a "small" battery and not so batt.-friendly SoC? ... don't know. It's still Exynos 990 and not 992 or something to have an architectural advantage created using in different febricated process. Rumors suggest CPU/GPU improvements in some ways, and I'm confused here if battery effeciency would be a part of it due to less heat/throttle.. Or to rule them all, adaptive RR is more than enough here too, to have more battery life than before?
The FP recognition is improved and responsive apparently.

Oh really? Was that true on the S-series this year or it that Note-specific? I've not read anything about that anywhere!
As for the rest of your comment... I guess we'll just wait and see! I'm not worried about battery at all, but I am in the US so the Snapdragon is why I'm not worried. Over my Note10+, this battery is LARGER and this generation of CPU may be more efficient so I'm guessing my battery life will be on par with this after adding in the 120Hz.

Will wait and see for the rest!
From my mate pro 10 :
1/ mobile dock, a great feature
2/ battery duration very low ! 1 day !
3/ fingerprint not really accurate
4/ overheat easy
Carrier specific Video calling?
So I see in another thread that someone with Verizon has a similar problem and I have T-mobile but can anyone confirm or deny the carrier specific video calling function? Look like (even in settings I checked) that the function is just not there for this device and you can only use DUO. I even downloaded The official T-mobile firmware and flashed my device twice this morning (1x with regular CSC file and another with the HOME CSC file and it made no difference). I bought mine carrier unlocked but the theory was flashing the firmware for T-mobile would've enabled those features but not even getting the T-mobile logo.
Can anyone confirm the same? I have the Note 20 and not the Ultra but it shouldn't make a difference.

Confirmed. I'm in the US, on T-MOBILE. I can use both carrier specific video calling and Duo.
