Being as that the phone is from the UK and that S2 doesn't exist on AT&T, can I purchase (new line) the non-smartphone unlimited data plan? Will it work properly (3g and all)? Also, do they have the means of finding out that i have a smartphone?
Thanks
Hello, did you end up doing the non smartphone plan for your s2 and did it work? I am interested in a s2 but need a new att account but with the unlimited data plan on AT&T.
Thanks.
I can confirm this works. I currently use 15.00 unlimited data plan meant for regular cell phones. You can get unlimited text and web for 20.00, but I use google voice for texts, so I just had them block texts to save the five bucks. Just give them the meid of a dumb phone, and they can't tell the difference.
Thanks for the reply. Any advice on getting the new account setup? I was thinking about going into the store but perhaps calling is better if I need to provide a meid? Also are you doing everything on your s2 like streaming, emails, web browsing etc.?
I would also be very interested in learning the extent of the data-related activities you can do with the SGS 2.
I'm guessing video-calling is out of the question?

Hi. I just got my vibrant yesterday and I got a couple question for it before I will root and unlock it. After I unlock it and put in my att sim card will I get charge or be force onto a data plan or can I used it normally without a data plan? B. Should I block incoming data and then use it. Finally C. What is this $10 dollar data plan that I read about on other thread. thank you for your answer.
I'd really like to know the answer to this as well. I've been alternating between an N1 and Vibrant on AT&T using my grandfathered 5GB dataplan. Can they recognize the IMEI?
I use the Samsung Vibrant on AT&T with a grandfathered iPhone unlimited data plan. AT&T hasn't noticed.
However, AT&T will automatically add a data plan to an iPhone if you try to use it on their network without a data plan.
so i guess ill update and try to answer your question incon. I just jump and root, unlock, and put axura 2.2.6 (very nice btw) and im using the phone well so far w/o any sms about data plan. I turn off data roaming and just used wifi since im on school t1 internet anyway. As far as them recognizing the IMEI, I'm still unclear but i've been checking my att account often and it still said that im running on w580i SE. Hope it helps any1 that looking to used this great phone on att unlocked. BTW I freaking love my vibrant. It ridiculously awesome!!!!.
I am a AT&T prepaid user. Can I use the Atrix 4G in it without data plan? I only use Wi-Fi which is much faster.
The AT&T shop assistant man told me that I will not be able to use it if I do not open any date plan. If I am a prepaid user I can not use the phone; If I am a postpaid user I will be notified to add a data plan after I insert the SIM card into the Atrix 4G which is a smartphone.
Currently I also use a smartphone in AT&T network and does not commit any data plan. The phone works great. The shop assistant said the reason is that Atrix 4G is a AT&T phone and will be recognized by AT&T and force to open a data plan.
I do not know whether I should believe him for may be he is just trying to sell me more expensive plans. Is it technically possible to ban prepaid users? Is there any way to avoid this restriction? Since the Atrix 4G smartphone is bought in full price and unlocked, I do not owe AT&T anything. It works in T-Mobile, but does not works in AT&T prepaid, which seems very rediculous.
Yes, You can.
So the salesmen is only trying to threaten me with no real dangerous?
If you use a pre-paid SIM on an smartphone on AT&T, they will slap a data plan onto your account and you will be expected to pay it. I've seen it happen multiple times before.
Be careful when trying to break policy.
Well my girlfriend has an iPhone prepaid on ATT (my old one)with no data plan, so it is possible I would think for the Atrix to be used prepaid. But I really do not know.
Unfortunately, AT&T scans the IMEI numbers of all the phones on their networks occasionally and if they find any smartphones without data plans they add one without any warning. If you want to use a smartphone without Data, look at T-Mobile. They're the only one you can really do it on.
Sucks, and I think there should be some sort of law about that since there's no physical requirement of smartphones to have data, but thats how it is.
I've got an atrix, it uses 3g/4g so a data plan should work unlike the iphone. The Inspire is another phone where data plans are not available for pre paid. Salesmen love to threaten, intimidate and mislead. If you only want wifi you can turn off data in the data manager under settings.
So, they may only scan my IMEI and add data plan to it without my permission, and I can always make voice calls?
Since I am in "$2 Unlimited Daily Talk and Text" prepaid plan which is not qualified for any data plan, how can they add date plan to it?
I want to use the GS2 without paying the monthly data plan, sort of as a wifi only device. Anybody know if I get an S2 off Craigslist and unlock it, will at&t recognize the phone and slap on the monthly data plan?
In other words do they have the IMEI sweeps like they did for unlocked IPhones?
Thnx!
if you get one and erased all the APN info from it, it will never connect to the Mobile Data from ATT... you will never get charged.
You don't even need to unlock it, if you are staying with AT&T.
I'm talking bout their mandatory smartphone plan.
Or if I don't buy it from them they won't add it ?
I've heard that if it picks up an IMEI from any smartphone registered on the network, it will add the smartphone data package. But I can't confirm this.
As long as you're using a phone released by AT&T, it will know it is a Smartphone by looking up the IMEI because AT&T knows every phone it releases. It doesn't matter where you bought it.
The only chance for you to avoid the data plan is buy a Smartphone that was not released by AT&T. Then again, chances are those phone mostly don't support all the AT&T's 3G/4G bands.
You can use a smartphone from At&t just call customer service and have them WIX block the line in use, I did it with my HTC Fuze before and on the bill it showed "Data Opt-Out"
Will that still let me send and recieve MMS?
Is it the same as a Data Block?
thnx
the new phones use a special sim/gsm, and in order to get network access you have to register the APN (forgive me if I have the names wrong). I've already got the unlimited data plan, and was also thinking of buying a phone so that I can easily be grandfathered. No dice, you have to call them to provision the phone/sim, and then I'm sure they will say you have to go with the limited data plan (charges above a certain usage). Looks like I'm going to have to call and ***** at them until I get them to grandfather me. I'm going to be super pissed if they don't do it. Isn't Verizon and sprint offering unlimited?
I may not need it now, but once I get this GS2 I believe I will be using alot more data.

Verizon no longer offers unlimited. Sprint does. T-Mobile sort of does(No overages. Just slow speeds.)
If you can provision the phone to use the wap.cingular APN, then you might (MIGHT) be able to slide under the radar. This is what we have done with my son's iphone 3gs and iphone 4 for a couple of years now. The system still reports that it is an iphone from the IMEI number but the feature is the $10.00 unlimited non-smartphone plan. As far as I know, there are no automated sweeps that look for smartphones with the wrong data plan. It looks at what APN the phone requests and then matches that to how your account is provisioned. If it tries to connect to a smartphone APN, and no provision is on the account for it, one is automatically added.
I've even had CS reps notice the iphone on his account with the $10.00 plan and breeze through it like it didn't even matter to them.
If you can change the SGS2 APN to use the wap APN, then the key is to have your SIM inserted into a non-smartphone and add the unlimited data package before placing the SIM into your SGS2 that has had its APN changed.
One thing I don't know is if you will get HSPA speeds on wap.cingular. I know 3G works well.

Yes, its Data block from At&t's side and so they won't add a data plan. I don't know if MMS will work cause at that time I only remember using text which was working fine.
I got my captivate with an upgrade from att of course. lol anyways the imei number got messed up cause I flashed a bad rom or something. I had some issue's with my phone, and I called att. They told me that I haven't been using my captivate. They said I was using an unknown phone. My point is backup your efs folder. Delete the one on the phone reboot your phone, and att will never know you have been using a smartphone on your account. When ever you want you can put the backed up efs folder on the phone, and the imei number will register again.
Are you saying backup and delete the whole folder? Or the sub folder with the imei in it?

Is it possible to use my GS2 on att’s ‘go phone’ plan. I can get the ‘voice’ to work but not the ‘data’. I took the phone to att and they put in a sim card from a display phone and the data worked just fine. So I know my phone is not ‘broken’. But my rep said that no 4g phone will work with the data network. That I would need to buy a contract. But I just want a little data, not enough to warrant buying a contract. I’ll stick to Wi-Fi on my home network. But is there a way to still use my ‘go phone’ account with the data att sells for it?
I use my S2 on Gophone exclusively, and buy a data package as an option. It costs $25 for 500 MB, and you can roll over unused data with a monthly "Automatic Feature Package Renewal" for as low as $5. Check www.paygonline.com
My S2 works great on ATT 3G, HSPA+
I have a gophone SIM that I use whenever I'm in the US and I've used it in all my phones, not the SGS2 yet but I have used my last phone, an SGS.
I didn't even need to buy a data bundle, it just used my credit balance for data (must admit it eats through credit quite quickly so probably wise to buy a bundle)
Yes it is possible to use a Gophone SIM with the Galaxy S2. Depending on the rom, you may need to setup the APN manually. Something I just noticed is that I cannot download any app form the Market. Also, I cannot download from sites like wupload, filesonic, uploaded, etc.
FB, Pandora, Gmail, Youtube, G+, Twitter, the Kitchen, web Browsing work fine. Small downloads from the Slidme Market work, but bigger downloads break at random points.
is it possible to use my gs2 on att's go phone plan
I am interest in the answer. I'm looking at getting a att unlocked Gs2 and att told me my 3g go phone sim with 3g and data will not work on this phone.
Are you'll using att go phone sim and att unlocked phone?
Noticed one couldn't download app from market, anything else that doesn't work?
Lots of $$ to spend to find out it doesn't work.
Does anyone know of a provider that you can get an inexpesive data only plan for the viewpad? I spent several hours trying to get set up with a tablet plan with AT&T and their 15/month for 250MB. In the end they would only support the viewpad as a phone, for no less than $40/month. Im not really interested in a phone plan. I only need the data plan. Any suggestions?

For US carrier, take a look at AT&T Gophone prepaid (which is what I've been using for several years) or T-Mobile prepaid. Gophone has 3 data feature (as add-on, optional to voice & SMS/MMS) packages and unused data allowance carryover after 30 days with additional purchase (deducted from available fund balance) - voice & text included, if you do not use it, you aren't charged. Depends on how much data you are or planning to use, and whether you have WiFi access too - don't believe you need to get into a contract plan at all with the Vpad7, both carriers don't really care what device you are using the sim card in - and you can switch it out as needed. Please start checking out their website's prepaid plans to get the basics for your research & planning .... be glad to help if you have specific issues or concern.

Well my understanding if your bring your own hardware they had to give you what plan you wanted. I pressed Verizon and got voice and text only on my Eris I bought right out. Go into the att store with the ViewPad and force them.

Thanks. The GoPhone seems to be working. I'm a little concerned about how much data will be used. Seems like it could get expensive. Anyway, I set up the 10cents/minute plan, which doesn't include data for "smartphones" until you add it later. Therefore, I shouldn't get charged for any phone or text usage if I don't use it.
I was a little confusing getting set up, but now that it's done, it should be pretty straight-forward to reload.
To set up, I had to create the account, which does not include data usage. Then I was able to add the "Data Package" after the device was activated.
Thanks for the tip.
I had the same experience with ATT. Their system automatically classifies the viewpad's imei as a "phone" and will reject monthly data plan signups. Had to go with their prepaid data plan which gets you less data for the samse amount. Jerks. Unfortunately the viewpad only gets edge service on t-mobile or id go with them.
