why copy from other post?

so what's your question?

I been flashing my phone many times. But today I did a stock update from SE. Now I am stuck in the step of copy the 3 files to system/bin/ I change the atrib to r/o and always get a msg telling me that have no space to copy those files, I tried the manual step, the apk step but no luck. Could you guys give a hand on it?

first of all, thank you for this. But I really don't get it to work... I did everything as said, the files are in the right place, but xrecovery still doesn't launch... I have original 2.1 SE rom. Any Ideas?

[Q] Followed instructions, phone did all it was supposed to do but no Superuser.

I have spent the better part of 3 days on these forums. Tried Super1Click to no avail then followed instructions as in the Noob Guide and everything looked good.
The phone found the update.zip file, did the whole reinstalling pkgs thing and rebooted.
But I can't find the superuser icon and when I downloaded Titanium backup it said I was not rooted.
I have the 959 UVj16 with Eclair 2.1
I would greatly appreciate some assistance. I honestly spent untold hours trying to find the answer before I asked.
Why go through all that. Just use z4root found here:
http://www.4shared.com/file/12OzPNJZ/z4root130.htm
Download from your phone.installs like a normal apk app and open and click root. Installs root and then all done.simple!

That link says not valid on phone but I can download to PC, where do I put it so that it will install?
1. should I remove uninstall.zip first from previous try
2. do I need to do anything with this file, ie. move from downloads to somewhere else?
nevermind, downloading from softpedia.
One click simple! Worked perfectly, thanks a million!!
did you rename the update.zip file? If you did, you shouldn't have.
You just had to place the file on your sd card.
yeah, OP PM me what didnt work on the noob guide.... please explain everything you did. There is no reason that file I uploaded should not work just fine. I need to make certain for others though (nobody else has said anything to me with an issue).

[Q] Anyone else having problems with the downgrade RUU for Rooting?

Can't post in the Dev section yet. That's what I get for trolling around since you guys showed me how to root my OG Droid. Thanks, btw.
Now, I'm trying to root my Tbolt, and when I click on the downgrade RUU file to see the contents it says the file is invalid. So, then I tried to extract it, to see what would happen, but same message.
I also downloaded the exploits.zip and the final PG05IMG.zip and was able to view both their contents. Plus, I had to extract the exploits file to the SDK directory, and it worked fine.
So, I then downloaded from all three mirrors, but same result. And then I went to the rom.galaxysense.com site and downloaded from there, but same result. Am I the only one having retarditis? Is the file jacked, or just run-of-the-mill incompetence on my part???
Thanks to whomever takes the time to help out. And thanks for all the help everyone puts out there for the rest of us.
I am confused by your massive amount of words in this post. You need to say maybe, 20 things total.
First, you don't need to open anything, you simply need to put the ZIP onto your SD card and reboot into Hboot.
The only ZIP you need to unzip is the exploit.zip.
I don't need to extract them, I get that. I was looking in the zip files out of curiosity, but when the one file said it was an invalid file type I didn't want to put it on my SD card. That's closer to 20 words, hope that makes sense.

haha, I was feeling like being a smart ass. The RUU needs to be renamed to PG05IMG.ZIP and put on the sd card, then you need to reboot into bootloader.
Also to add, I came into the problem where I renamed to PG05IMG.zip It was already zipped so just had to name it PG05IMG Then it worked for me.
Thanks for the help. I guess no one understood what I was saying, but since no one else has mentioned the file being corrupted I guess I'll use it and hope for the best.
That's why I mentioned that the other two zip files would let me look at their contents, but the third one said invalid file type. I thought it was clear, but my bad...
Either way, here's another post towards getting out of noob post restrictions!

I'm pretty sure that the RUU downgrade is not something you can open. Just make sure the checksum is valid and you're good to go.
I had tried to flash the RUU after I first rooted becuase I was having location issues. It would check the PG05IMG.ZIP and go back to the Hboot screen. I had flashed another rom so I didn't mess with it any further.

Finally! I've been looking through threads forever in search of this very issue. I was all set on rooting last night, and just like you, the Mecha_RUU file wouldn't unzip, said it was invalid, etc. I stopped right there out of fear that I'd get burned pressing on with one of the key files "broken." Have you rooted since with no trouble?
The best thing to always do is get an MD5 sum for the file and compare it to the root post. I have rooted my thunderbolt twice now and never had a problem.
If the md5sum is correct then you should be fine. Also remember in Windows, it hides the extensions. So when you rename your files do not add the extension as it is already there.
You can show the extensions by changing the folder settings.
Downgrade wont flash
1) Power down phone
2) Power up phone holding volume down
3)No option to upgrade just starts checking files
4) Third check is the downgrade file, starts loading
5) Fails because the file is Older than the main
Ive seen other threads touch on this but no one answer it. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Also I have already updated to the 7/8/11 OTA.
Thanks,

as in "MAIN VERSION HIGHER" error while flashing?
Not sure what exactly you are trying to do but read this post where it discusses about getting that error.

I appreciate the thread link. That's exactly the error I'm getting. Problem is I'm supposed to downgrade to obtain root ( or at least that's one of the steps). I have downloaded this downgrade file from multiple links and verified its the correct one to use in this step and I always receive the "main version higher" issue. Should I be using a different file to downgrade or is this no longer an option for root since the 7/8/11 ota?

Interesting..
I wiped everything ADB and Thunderbolt related from my PC.
Then I downloaded the easy root from this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005292&highlight=easyroot
Then I downloaded and opened the pdf instructions on the same page.
Then I followed the written directions to a T!
Worked like a charm. Steps 1, 2, and 3 hung up and had to be done multiple times but I finally got through it. Some other links if found with this same method were misleading as to doing the steps over again but he accounted for this in his pdf instructions and if you follow it to the letter you should be good.

7. Long click the zip once you moved.

The same occurs when you do it with a computer program such as Droid Explorer.

Yes, it works..
With instruction #6 I recommend: copy the original first to a secure folder on your SD-card, so as to be sure that, when something goes wrong, you can get it back...
Greetz,
kwarkje
EDIT: Question: do the bootanimations for 2.1 work on 2.3.3? Anybody knows that?
#9 found that the original one ticked R&W of the Owner line and Read of the other lines.
is it OK to tick all boxes?

I think it's ok.
made an bootanimation by myself.
the script of bootanimation is generic.

It's just a boot animation- nothing harmful so I doubt it wil effect your system.
The worst would be a very pixelated and slow boot animation if your desired boot animation is for LDPI (Lower Def) Devices.
do you know how to change the zdzihu's boot logo?
I'm quite sick with that ugly face(sorry for this, but I still respect zdzihu)
does that mean have to edit the RAMDISK?

I think i answered you're question already on private messages, but for other people with this question, just switch to an alternative like doomkernel, ThKernel etc.
You can always use this tool to change the bootanimation
quick question.
my bootanimation is the bios one i founf on this forum
did all i had to do and it works on my X10
BUT,
it doesnt load completely i get the (enter pin code) frame before its finished.
what i did was delete some pictures in the zip (the double frames (pics that look the same))
and renamed em all to follow in sequence seeing im pretty new to all this and wasnt sure if it was needed.
now its loading a bit further in the pictures cause i see more changes in the X time its loading.
now my point is can i edit/do something to make it finish and THEN enter the pin code or ? did i do something wrong.
uploaded it with total commander .. the permissions you talked about i didnt do that is that root explorer only or ?
thnx in advance

Sorry I'm not an expert in that field, sorry I don't know how to deal with that. Yeah the permissions are for root explorer but if another program supports permissions in that form, them it's for that other program as well.
Cheers

[SOLVED] Creating an update.zip?

UPDATE: Problem fixed, thanks to florpor. The solution was to change the scripting language from Amend to Edify
Hi all,
I was wondering if I could get some quick advice from some more experienced users here on XDA?
Basically, I've been trying to put together a simple update.zip that I can flash that adds a tone to /system/media/audio/notifications. This is because after each time I flash an update for CM9 on my Galaxy S II, it replaces/removes the tone. Now, I could manually re-add them each time, but I'd like to find an alternative solution.
I've spent the past two hours or so searching around on how to put together an update.zip, and came across this tutorial and thought I was going well, until I tried to flash the zip and got an error message telling me that recovery no longer uses update-script files, and instead uses updater-script. So, I went ahead and renamed it, then re-zipped and re-signed the folders, and tried to flash it through CWM, which just returned an installation aborted message, with no details.
Any ideas? It's probably something really obvious that I'm mising, but it's driving me nuts. I've attached the update.zip, in case it helps.
Anyway, thanks for your time,
screamworks.

[Q] How to modify a system file?

Hi there,
I upgraded my Galaxy 551 to Gingerbread 2.3.6. All went well. Unfortunately it seems to be a common side effect that the Z and Y keys (and some others) get swapped. The fix is apparently to modify the file /system/usr/keychars/sec_keypad.kcm.bin. The ideal thing is to put the old file from before the FW update back in, but of course I don't have that anymore! But the existing one can apparently be altered. If I can copy it to the SD card I can alter it in a hex editor and put it back.
So, I rooted my phone with that one click application, and that went OK too. I installed root explorer and found the file. There were also some others in the same folder I may be able to use. But, I cant make the folder R/W (pressing the button does nothing) so cant do anything with the file. I also tried Super Manager with no luck.
I am new to the phone fiddling stuff so noob level instructions would be appreciated!
Think I have it sorted. I installed superuser and then Root Explorer allowed me to select read/write. Now to try sort out this file!
OK, seems that you need to edit the file /system/usr/keylayout/sec_keypad.kl. Did that. DO'H now my keyboard doesn't work at all! Glad it saved a backup for me! Not sure what I did wrong, only edited two characters in a text file! Even the power button doesn't work. Got to pull that battery out LOL!
It seems when the file was saved it was saved with zero size. When I try to delete it to replace it with the backup it says cant delete, read only. So, not sure how I am meant to replace this and fix this problem.
Any ideas, remembering that I cant actually use any buttons on the phone!
