Brand new Fascinate just came in, has the 2.1 update. I've rooted it and I have CWM on. The text is blue so I believe that means it's the non-voodoo version..?
Anyway I just need to know what to do from here, I just want a kernal that will fix GPS issues, OC, and lagfix. I noticied they're out there I just don't know how to flash them. Everytime I try to flash it with my current CWM it gives me an error saying something about a signiture not being signed. I also saw a ROM called the community dev rom and it seemed to have the most stable version of Gingerbread on there. Every time I try and search for some help everything seems to not be up to date. So if anyone can help me in my situation I believe I gave you everything that is needed to know..
I'm coming from a G2 and previously came from a G1, so this is nothing new to me. Everything about the Fascinate just seems so confusing to me.
Thanks!
First of all thank you for posting this in the correct forum. You have no idea how hard it is for some members to understand this concept.
Might I direct your attention to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948722
This is by far the best guide I have seen to flashing and educating people on how the fascinate works.
You mention that your recovery is blue. This is the stock samsung recovery and not the CWR 2.X or 3.X. You need to have the RED edition of CWR to have the most compatibility.
Also the Comm rom, actually called Ultimate Kangbang, is not gingerbread. In fact I think the only gingerbread it has is the keyboard. It is ED10 (EC10 if you like). It does not come with a radio but has a kernel that is completely customizable. (undervolt, or overclocking to 1.6ghz)
I would read through the posts in the Comm ROM and understand the flashing process before you get to far into it Kangbang is a great ROM, GPS is instant lock and I am currently undervolted by 75mv across the board.
cheers!
Thanks for that
So what's the best Vanilla rom for the SF? I don't like the whole TouchWiz stuff
Second the community rom. Might want to hold off on the oc for now. Once you get on a decent kern with voodoo enabled, and a good rom like the one mentioned you may find that this phone is fast enough. Running preset voltages and clock with absolutely no complaints about speed with none of the issues some has trying to oc.
+1 for kangbang/comm rom. Read the stickied thread in this forum to help you.
Wow I love ya'll now. Finally got it. Voodoo made my phone so much faster! Coming from a G2 so I thought I would see a speed decrease. But it's fine. Thanks guys
ive tested pretty much all the kernels that xda has to offer, and i'm still bouncing back an forth between CWkernel and Tigers Blood FPScapped.
I'm one of those unfortunate souls that have a Vibrant that doesn't like the FPS being uncapped...and it gives me the shaky screen thing upon boot. No Bueno.
I just want a kernel with good performance, BLN, Voodoo Sound and color, and reasonable battery life. CWkernel provides this, but doesn't seem as smooth as tigers blood...plus Jocelyn no longer supports it.
with tigers blood, i get more of a battery drain than CWK.
I would also like a less invasive Kernel Screen like the B&W "google" that Jocelyn has put in CWkernel.
I would do it myself, given the knowledge....
Could someone point me in the right direction as far as compiling my own kernel? or at least suggest one other than the two described above?
Thanks!
To clarify, are you just looking for a guide to compile a kernel? Or do you need a guide which includes instructions for applying Voodoo, BLN, etc. and then compiling a kernel?

Ive just used overstock and bali kernel but I didnt saw that on the descriptions (or dont remember)
Give the Bullet Kernels a try. I think you will be intrigued by the raw speed and good battery performance.
So I'm sure the title makes this clear already, but I have an HTC Incredible as of now, but am preparing to trade for a Fascinate. From what I've gathered online, the Fascinate has the Incredible beat on hardware (except for the camera), but isn't quite up to par on software (TW vs Sense, Bing, just got Froyo, etc), but for a CM/AOSP guy, that's not too big of a problem.
So, I just have a few questions as I prepare to make the transition.
With the DInc, pretty much everything can be done on the phone after the one-click root with unrEVOked. It's to my understanding that much of what has to be done is in Odin? The concept of going through another technological medium to accomplish something on my phone is going to be a bit new for me, but I catch on really quickly, so I'm not too worried.
Are there any tricks or tips/helpful reading material that anyone could suggest as I settle in over here?
As I looked through the Dev section (however briefly), it seemed like Kaoscinator was the most stable GB rom available on the Fascinate. If this is not true, which is? I'm not a fan of MIUI, and tend to like stock GB (or as close as possible) the best, so this would really be my biggest question.
Thanks!
The stickies in the General section should get you off to a running start. As for CM/Aosp builds, JT's CM7, currently test build 5, is the most stable and functional at this time.
i would suggest ComRom, most AOSP like in that it doesn't have TW, but everything works, give CM a alittle time, it will be perfect when 100% working...but also know that OMFGB and OMGB will be ported soon, r2doesinc is on the case, and they are working on that atm...
I ended up going through ComRom to get to the CM7 alpha/beta/whatever it's being called. It's pretty stable, I was pleased with it. I needed me some real AOSP though (modded AOSP, but you get the point). The only issue I've had so far was the random ringing, but that disappeared after someone called me before I had the chance to reboot. Haven't had it since.
I was having problems using RM to flash a recovery, but that's because there was a step that I was skipping... Odin. If my bootloader had security disabled, S-Off, I could completely unroot, and go from pure stock to a rooted Rom in the time it takes to make a Nandroid, wipe, flash and boot. Being able to flash a recovery image through the bootloader on the phone is really the only thing I miss from the Incredible other than tthe optical trackpad. I'm loving the screen size, and everything else. The processor on this phone is fantastic. I can't wait to see what springs up in the development forum once the CM team officially supports this device. Especially some OC kernels... this thing could go even faster, I can feel it.
OMFGB will be a welcome addition as well. R2 and his team do great work!
I'm still learning things and establishing procedure, but if anyone could point me to some plain as day information on what exactly Voodoo is, that'd be great. That's not something I've ever heard of until now.
Thanks for the patience! I catch on quick, I promise I don't ask a whole lot of questions, as I try to figure it out on my own first, the switch is just a little daunting with the addition of Odin. Weird stuff.
Voodoo is comprised of a few parts.
Voodoo lagfix-- converts the file system from RFS to the speedier ext4. This improves the responsiveness of the phone
Voodoo Color-- makes the colors of the phone "pop" more and look better.
Voodoo sound-- The galaxy S series of phones have a VERY good audio chip. Voodoo sound lets you fully take advantage of the processor's power. Hook this phone up to a decent receiver and speaks and you will be pleasantly surprised.
Voodoo sound and color REQUIRE kernel source code to be baked in. Voodoo lagfix does not require kernel source. Thus, you can have voodoo lagfix without color/sound (and potentially vice-versa).
Aha! The Fascinate's partitions ARE Ext4 (except for non-Voodoo, of course)! I thought so! The partitions were all Ext3 on the DInc. That's pretty cool!
Now, how would one control Voodoo? Is there an app that does that, or is this controlled via the Voodoo Settings in the Lag-Fix Recovery?
Sound is controlled with voodoo control app in the market. Lagfix is controlled by clockwork. Color is just built into the kernel and has no setting options
Voodoo color only works when you have your backlight set to max brightness... unless I am mistaken

You are correct...its to help balance the colors to remove the blue tint of bright white display due to its pentile design

Yup, I just found that exact kernel. I stumble into something new every time I go through the Dev forum. I'm definitely digging this phone.
I'm due to get my GT10.1 on Thursday and I've been planning what ROM to put on it if one is required.
Firstly, from reading around I see people mention Voodoo sound and there seems to be quite a demand for it. Is this come kind of hack or update to improve sound quality?
Secondly, I'm guessing Touchwiz is Samsung's own UI type thing, kinda like HTC Sense?
Lastly, the ROM
I've looked at a few roms. I like my devices to look and work as intended by the manufacturer, but also have a few extra features.
I looked at Task's ROM but it doesn't seem to include Voodoo stuff from what I've read. I could be wrong though.
The next ROM I found which interests me is Bonsai 0.3.0. I don't usually trust anything outside of XDA, but this looks quite decent and has everything I'd want in a ROM. What are people's experience with it?
I'm guessing that flashing a ROM is as simple as following this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1150732 or this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130574
Then flashing the ROM from Recovery.
I know these may seem like obvious questions, but I want to be 100% sure that what I've researched is correct before I do anything!

Voodoo isn't built into a rom. That is kernel related. So if you wanna give voodoo a shot you would have to flash pershoots kernel. He has integrated it in. As for roms. if you want touchwhiz and you want it to look stock and act as stock, i threw up a totally stock rom in my thread. Starburst is also a great rom.
Thanks for the reply mate!
I'm thinking of flashing Task650 KME with pershot's kernal (boot-cm_2636.4_ux-oc-xtra-vfpv3-d16_fp-082611.zip).
When I get my tab, how will I know if it's KME or KMB ect?

It should say that somewhere in the about tablet window of settings. Make sure you pick the right kernel from pershoot. I believe that's the right one but just make sure its touchwiz if tasks is touchwiz. Also you might want to see how you like stock. Its pretty good stock.

I am thinking of sticking with Stock as I can't find a ROM I'm 100% happy with the sounds of.
Task's rom sound awesome, but there seem to be a few people with problems. Nothing major, just things like icon res ect.
All I want, is completely stock with TouchWiz and the following:
1. Root
2. Voodoo sound
3. Overclocking to 1.4Ghz
4. Performance
I don't want anything else changing tbh unless it's for enhancements.
I was thinking of cooking my own ROM that meets my requirements but I don't have the time to learn how to do it if I'm honest.
Task's ROM sounds like it meets 99% of my requirements to me, but if anyone has any other suggestions then please do share!
Thanks
Do yourself a favor and stick with the stock ROM. Its the most stable and reliable ROM for the tab 10.1

You can root the tab yourself. What your looking for is all on the kernel side. Stay stock load pershoots kernel. Read the sticky on how to get root and CWM.

Think I'll give this a go too. Will try Task's ROM too to see how they compare and which I prefer.
Just a note: I'm not criticizing Task's ROM. It's excellent work. I'm just trying to get the best out of my Tab for my own use. If I use a Custom it WILL be Task's tbh.
Running Starburst ROM and Pershoot's kernel, Tab runs great!

Got my Tab!
Only problem is that the build number is XXKG8. When I go to Software update it says no updates found. How do I get it to update to KME? :/
Found something interesting.
Went into Download mode and got a Warning about flashing a Custom OS giving me the option to continue or opt out. Never seen this mentioned before, is it normal?
I know it's nothing to worry about, I can obviously make my own mind up, was just wondering if it's new.

You need to Flash CW recovery using the guides in the dev area then flash the zip provided in pershot's Kernal thread.
Make sure your device and firmware are compatible.

any thoughts? just rooted it yesterday, was trying to figure out what the best kernel is
Stock, lol. Whatever comes on the ROM is going to be your best bet right now.
I am using stock rooted with ziggy kernel due to his having call recording enabled. Works well for me.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
I used Ziggy's for a few weeks but like most other users I found that it rebooted itself at least once a day no matter what the clock settings where (innefabilis ROM).
I switched to the OC dsb kernel & it has run absolutely perfectly ever since, but I don't see any huge advantage over just running the stock kernel at this point.

It depends on what ROM you're running to some extent. Also, people are having different experiences running the same ROM/kernel combo so ymmv.
I would decide on a ROM you want to try then read through that ROM's thread and look for issues people are having and what kernels they're using. Then read through the kernel threads and check for issues for it being used with the ROM you like.
It will depend on how you use your phone too. I've read where people running Ineffabilis ROM with ziggy's kernel are fine except if they let the phone charge to 100% while it's on it starts bootlooping. So I could never use that since I usually charge overnight and need to use the phone as my alarm clock. I went with dsb but haven't done any oc/uv tweaking yet.
You can always try one out and then change it if it's not working out for you.
I've personally used ziggy and dsb, I didn't notice much of a difference between either, but dsb was/is SUPER easy to flash, puts boot.img INS ph91img.zip on your sd and reboots to villager for easy install (ziggy might have done this to, I don't remember)
I also used both with inefabliss and didn't notice any issue with ziggy, but results may very!
