rooting is as easy as it looks. cause of the unlocked bootloader u don't have to work around it like on the HTC ones. just flash the cf corresponding with ur kernel
If you're getting a Samsung Fascinate, (that's the Phone I have and love); I don't recommend Rooting or Flashing the ROM, as it comes with or will be able to DownLoad Over the Air from Verison Wireless the latest Froyo, and later on you'll be able to Get the next version, (Gingerbread), also Over the Air.
Here's what I found. If you Flash the ROM with Odin or "ROM Manager", (DownLoad from the Android Market ~ Caution: The Samsung Facinate seems to need ClockWorkMod Version 2.5.1.2 or it will hang, {as there are two separate language barriers and version 3.x.x.x at this time can't communicate with the other language. See the Link Below for more Details}).

Also, if you Flash the ROM with "ROM Manager", the Samsung Fascinate might not be able to get the Next Flash Upgrades from Verizon Wireless or other. It will be manual from now on. However; you get the SuperUser App when you Flash, (which will also Root your Phone), but, you can also DownLoad this from the Android Market. The Cool thing about "ROM Manager" is that you can BackUp your ROM.
You will have Froyo 2.2.1, and can DownLoad the Latest Adobe Flash Player, 10.3.x. This will allow you to Track Packages that might be sent to you from eBay via PayPal; however, the Daily Briefing won't have a City for you to find, and so your Desk Cradle can't find either the Weather for your City or the Daily Briefing either.
Now, as to this Samsung Phone defaulting to BING for Maps and Searches; that's a minor thing as you can DownLoad Google Maps, and you'll also get Google Latitude and Places, (a Feature I use often)
And the New Stock Froyo allows you to put a Google Search bar and the Google Icon right on your screen, (find an Empty Spot and Press and hold for a few seconds, then go to Widgets and Scroll down to Google Search ~ All).
And if you Save the Web Site for Google, and for Google Tasks, then you can also Press & Hold the screen and place Short-Cut Icons for these on your Phone as well, and if you're still not satisfied, you might be able to change the Search Button to default to Google, (but that is beyond my knowledge of how to do so, search the XDA Forums). Select a Blank Screen before pressing the Applications Menu, (on the far Right). The Google Icon is also in the Applications Menu and you can Press and Hold on this Icon and it will appear on the Previous Screen.
You get a lot of so called Bloatwear on the Stock Froyo, (like VZ Navigator, which will cost money. Use Google Maps instead). You also get Amazon Kindle, Madden NFL 11, NFS Shift, Tetris, V Cast Music, V Cast Tones, V Cast Videos, V Cast Apps... but none of these seem to slow down the performance of this Amazing Samsung Fascinate, (especially if you don't use them, and you can UnInstall them using the stock "Task Manager". I recomnend DownLoading the "Advanced Task Killer", and you can still tinker with "ROM Manager" & "Root Explorer" if you've a mind to.
Back in the early part of this year, I might have said "It's worth the effort to Flash the ROM" to get the latest Froyo Firmware, and Adobe Flash. But, now that it's stock, I think you're asking for something that just takes up your time that could be better spent showing love and affection to your spouse or family.

1. ThinkFree Office" seems to give an extra "Text encoding" Pop-Up Screen with Froyo, (either Stock or Flashed); that didn't occur with the previous ROM.
2. If you Flash the ROM, the Daily Briefing no longer can Find a City.
Pros:
1. You get the Extra "Auto Rotation" Menu Choice on the Pull Down Screen, (which means to you, that you can lay in bed and Turn Off the "Auto Rotation" so the Screen doesn't keep flipping on you)
2. You can DownLoad Adobe Flash Player.

Hi, I've got a new phone recently, and I'd like to turn my old HTC legend into a mp3 player.
I'd like to completely remove Android and just make it a file manager similar to an iPod Classic, so I can play audio and video files.
I want the file manager to be the ONLY program on the phone, exept being able to take pictures (althogh the last is optional)
How do you do that/anything similar?

I don't think removing Android fully and using the phone with just a file browser is an option, I might be wrong though.
Your best bet would be to run CM7 without the Gapps package, this will probably be as light and fast as your going to get.

Well, I don't want it to be an Android anymore
I did something similar with my old Motorola Droid. I wanted it just to be an Audible player, so I installed CM7 and just disabled as much as I could. With root access, you can remove a number of system apps without breaking anything, and then use something like LauncherPro to hide the rest ot the icons in the app drawer that you don't want on there. You can also make a dock at the bottom in LauncherPro that has nothing on it, so that you can't even get to the drawer without adding an icon for it in the dock. You would end up with a homescreen that just has whatever specific apps you want on it, similar to an iPod Touch.
It'll probably be close to impossible to get something working on there that isn't Android--the touchscreen/wifi/camera rely on drivers and such. Your best bet will probably be to go with a ROM and customize it to fit your needs.
If you've ever used the Rockbox firmware for various MP3 players, there is an Android port. This runs like a regular app on Android. Its compiled daily for Android here:

You still need an operating system, you can't just get rid of Android. You could disable stuff that isn't essential to the OS like Gapps, and any other apps you dont need.

What are:
1. ModemStatsService
2. Motorola Input
3. Homescreen -- I am just using the stock homescreen, and never saw a separate process in the past unless using a launcher.
3.5 Maps is always running, probably due to google location services, but often even when I haven't used a map or any apps there seems to be two instances of maps running -- it appears twice in the running services list.
and, yes, I googled this first unsuccessfully.

Where are you seeing these services? I want to know so I can see if they're running in my ROM, or if they should be running
The first sounds like it's the Modem Updater
The second sounds like MotoBlur
The third sounds like it could be either the actual homescreen or the app drawer
The fourth sounds like you have "Maps" and "Navigation" running, with both masquing as "Maps" for some reason.. Maybe?

first one is about connection, i think it's something that help battery statistics
2 probably keyboard, os something related an input (something about touchscreen)
3 in gb there was no separate process, and you couldn't change home without helping software (home manager) now is a normal launcher, you can change it without problems, so i think they made an indipendent process
maps depends, many apps use maps sdk to work (for example almost anything uses position, fuel apps etc) it's called as a service for this reason, geolocalization also needs maps if i don't get wrong...
these are in "running services" with ICS, stock. they come up on boot, and the two maps seem to come up after awhile even if I don't initiate any apps.
If anyone knows whether I can freeze the modemstats or Motorola Input, I'd appreciate it. I find that the fewer things 'running' on boot that I have no immediate need for, the longer my battery lasts.

I've been using Android since 2009 and since the very beginning I have wondered why Google has done such a poor job developing their Marketplace store (since renamed to Google Play -- ridiculous name but that's a different topic). Specifically, the User Interface of the marketplace. The market HAS undergone a couple of changes to its appearance and has had the addition of music, movies, etc. But the basic user interface components for App Installation have seen practically no change at all.
Here's my incomplete list of severe shortcomings of Google Play:
1. There is NO WAY to see a short concise list of all the apps you have already purchased. You can choose between two tabs -- "Installed" and "All". The "Installed" list is just that -- apps already installed. The "All" list shows everything -- already installed, purchased but not installed, free and recently installed on a different device, etc. And this is big jumbled mess is listed in the order of apps most recently installed, which leads to:
2. There Is NO WAY to sort the list in the "All" tab by any criterion. It is what it is, you are stuck with the order everything is listed in and you cannot change it.
3. When you want to install an app, you first have to tap on the app name and then it jumps to the detailed page for that app, where you then press "Install" and then another screen to confirm. There is NO WAY to install the app directly from the app listing without jumping through multiple screens every time for every individual app. This wouldn't be so terrible, except:
4. The listing does not REMEMBER YOUR POSITION when you press back. I find myself scrolling down through the UNSORTABLE list on the "All" page, finding the app I want, which may be 150+ apps down, going to that app's detailed page and pressing install/confirm, then pressing back twice, and it returns me back to the TOP of the list again. So if I wanted to then install the next app that was right below the previous one, I have to SCROLL DOWN AGAIN.
5. Ultimately, what I WANT and NEED is a batch installer directly from the marketplace. Put some freaking CHECKBOXES next to every app on the main list and then put a big "Install All Checked" button at the top. What's so difficult about this concept?
6. You may say "Just use titanium backup, it will solve all your problems." Well I DO use Titanium backup where appropriate. But sometimes I just want to do a CLEAN install of every app, directly downloading from the marketplace again. App backups do get screwed up over time, and reinstalling from marketplace fixes those issues. Not to mention, TiBackup requires ROOT, which not everyone has/wants/needs/knows how to obtain. Or I might be installing all my required apps on a totally new device and I don't want to import incompatible data from some other device.
In my opinion this is a MAJOR shortcoming in Android. There absolutely NEEDS to be a way to easily batch-install many apps directly from the marketplace. Especially for people like me who have 100+ apps installed and regularly wipe my phone to install the latest ROM. And #1 is just insulting in my opinion. I can't see a list of only the apps I OWN? I might forget that I purchased something a long time ago and just forgot to reinstall it. And nobody has come up with a third party tool to batch-install from the market (or have they?)
Can someone please help me understand why Google has failed to improve their storefront for so long? Where is the suggestion box for me to voice all of these concerns?

I agree with everything youve said - but the way I see it is that the Play store is a work in progress. There have been some pretty significant enhancements made in the last few years (I think I started using android in 2010).
Since then they have made 2 or 3 comprehensive UI updates, added books and movies support (which you mentioned), and the “ALL” apps list is also reasonably new (since Google Play was implemented).
I think within the next year or two you will start to see a lot of the features you mentioned.
Apple’s app store was pretty basic when it first started, now they have a lot of great sorting and display options.
Hopefully Google will step up.

Yeah, it will be nice if we can install multiple apps at the same time. Well, batch installer, that's what i mean.
Also, i wish i could delete some old apps (that I installed only to test them) from "Other apps in my library". There are lots of apps i never used, only tried them, and this, combined with the inability to sort the apps, make a real mess. I have to mine for every useful app that i need to install.
Or, at least, they should make a "Favorite" option.

-I could prevent selected apps from launching in the background by themselves (see attached picture - i never asked for any of those to launch - seriously the phone was on for only 5 minutes or so) in a one time configuration process. For example, I'd block Facebook but let Messenger do its thing freely.
-I could completely uninstall the following apps : Hangouts, Google+, Gmail, News & Weather, Chrome, Play books, Play Music... Basically everything Google except Maps, YouTube & The Play store..
2 / I Wonder, if it's possible to accomplish (some of) those things by rooting but without flashing another rom. What I mean is, can we change the governor, install super SU, other tweaking solutions... but at the same time keep the stock rom as it is whith all the apps installed as they are... and simply applying tweaks on top of it?
3 / Also, never have I once went back to factory settings, since day one, and I can feel that some apps take a bit longer to load. When receiving the SENSE 5 / 4.2.2 update, I could definitely sense a big boost in responsiveness in the OS but it now feels like before the update. Maybe it's due to those background processes, starting and ending by themselves? Or because the internal memory chip is beginning to die (I did use the phone like an animal in its early days by doing things like downloading torrents and unzipping files between 500mb-5gb) and still do sometimes. And I rarely uninstall apps. I have like 200 (every shortcuts included - like settings, help,... so basically 170 apps maybe?) and i need them at least every once in a while, so I'm the preventive type, not a hoarder.

If it's a challenge then "I'm a proud owner since January " Well , welcome aboard the sailing ship of the HOX+
Well for starters, everything you said can be acheived by root WITHOUT installing a custom ROM. That actually answers all your questions, HOWEVER, keep in mind, that the first stage of rooting , will require you to WIPE all your data during the stage of unlocking the bootloader. So , your music , apps,pics all will be wiped, and you won't be able to backup your apps the first time. So I hope it's still worth it .

Moving on,
The list of apps you will need is as following:
1-Super SU or SU whatever is a necessary ofcourse.
2-Xposed framework (google it, its not on the play store) Function:
Its a program that you will need to install other tweaks to your phone. Its basically a manager for those tweaks incase you want to turn one off.

3-Xposed Framework > Downloads > "BootManager"
Its a module (thats the term for those "tweaks") that allows you to setup the programs that you dont want to boot. Sadly It doesn't have a full list of apps, but its useful nonetheless.
3'-Greenify:
The reason I named it 3' was because its an alternative for BootManager. Greenify hibernates the apps , making them not run in the background, but when you open the app it wakes up, so its not similar to "disable" function since you can still open the app to work on it.
4-Titanium Backup
Now thats a program I must install everytime I switch roms, if you read the thread you will know whats it's use, but let me sum it up. You backup all your apps and progress and when you switch roms (since everything is wiped again) it restores everything back.
ALSO: It allows you to totally uninstall all the apps even stock ones, but TAKE care not to uninstall anything messy, advice: backup everything before you uninstall.
5-Xposed Framework > Downloads > "Sense5 Toolbox" :
It allows you to make tweaks for the stock rom, rearrange quick settings, add new ones, change lock screen ..etc. Really worth it.
6-Xposed Framework > Downloads > "Recent apps RAM":
When you open up the recent apps lists, there will be a bar at the top displaying the ram used and free ram. When you see that less than 100mb left, then thats when you know the phone will lag. Just clear all the apps and it should be fine
7-Xposed Framework > Downloads > "Recent Apps kill all Button":
The only thing missing in sense is the ability to kill all apps without manually swiping up on each app in the most recent list. That enables a button for that.
IMO: Rooting was the best move I have ever made, and since we have S-ON, then you can't really brick your phone. So life is good.

So I read your thread on the link you proved provided (again thanks), read and seen videos and tutorials about titanium backup, and also read about - and tried Xposed + sense5 toolbox without rooting just to get a glimpse - and it's both easy to use and ergonomic. Of course I couldn't get any benefits of it yet since still not rooted, but hey, you've pretty much served me all the steps on a golden plate.
Also, as a warming up session, I did a factory reset and neck, I backed up everything before doing so and all I lost was my games data + 1 or 2 phone numbers + my text messages. Overall not a big deal + reinstalling everything took nothing more than a couple of downloading hours.
What's left for me is to test out greenify and the other module (boot something) or any other alternative, I'll figure it out you've already done more than enough.
As for the main task, rooting and getting super user access, again I now have enough info thanks to you + the stickies + the whole one x+ section.
I am so grateful for your time. After years with windows mobile and window phone 7 (and 8 months of unrooted use of my hox+, this is new to me and now it seems nothing but easy.

I have this horribly cheap china android phone (it's supposed to be a GalaxyS4 mini - replica, but it looks nothing like it) and I bought it for one single purpose: To have it stolen in case of need. Yeah. At nights when the city over here becomes very very insecure, I keep my main phone hidden, while I bring out my chinaphone to listen to music and to connect to facebook chat (the stand alone app) by connecting to the "Portable wifi hotspot" I activate in my main cellphone.
The thing is, the chinaphone its a piece of crap (it has 256 MB of RAM under android 4.1.2) and while it works fine after it has been rebooted, it tends to go slower and slower, to a point where it does absolutely nothing. I managed to somehow root it (it was a pain, since the rooting tools were in chinese and so is the root app) and I have installed a couple things to "enhance it" which is basically removing the bloatware they put in to make it look like a galaxy s4, live wallpapers and whatnot.And I installed another launcher, Nemus launcher, which is supposed to be one of the most lightweight.
So anyway. I was wondering what "apps" can I safely delete or disable to have a bare-bones device that can connect via wifi, open facebook messenger and play music. Maybe instead of asking what can I delete, I should ask: What should I keep?
Well, I assume you will be using Titanium Backup to remove the applications? Do you have a list you can provide here of the apps that you have?
By the way, while sad that I think it is you have a "in case of robbery phone," I also think that that is an awesome idea ha. Where I live it's not necessary, but i'll keep this idea in mind in case I have to move.

Im using swiftkey as I love that thing and the whole "Flow input" is great for this phone, considering it is not multitouch, It's "single touch" and if I try to type with the thumbs as in my real phone, it ends all garbled because I type rather fast, and i press keys at the same time; this translated in a single touch device, when I press by accident two keys at the same time, it finds the middle point between my fingers and uses the letter in there, which is really annoying. And typing slow is... well, frustrating for me. With the flow thing, i just swipe and the words come out nicely thanks to the prediction. Problem is, that it also seems to slow down the system to a crawl very very quickly
Any other keyboard that has this function so I can try it?
Does anyone has any experience with Lightning launcher? It claims to be ultra fast, but Im not sure that means it's lightweight with the resources.
