I don't know how many of you have been in the same boat (or care, really) but I am just so torn as to what to do!! I have been with t-mobile for the last 10 years and haven't had too many problems other than small hiccups from time to time. And I got onto their no roaming charges plan fairly early on after i signed up. I don't travel very often, but it was nice to not worry about roaming charges. I would always look at verizon and see that they charged roaming fees and were generally more expensive than what I had. Then I got my first smart phone in 2006 and was hooked! However, t-mobile was pretty late in the game as far as 3G speeds were concerned, especially in my area. And sometimes, the "3G" speeds really suck!! Tho I have compared against people with AT&T and verizon, and when I have 3G speeds on my phone, they tend to be faster. Hell, I can even stream netflix movies through my phone! But now with the onset of 4G, verizon seems to be in a good position. Tho I just read that Salt Lake wasn't going to get complete LTE coverage until the end of the year. Which kind of bites. Anyway I am kind of wanting to jump ships now, however I would have to cut my allowed minutes in half (to 450), and service would STILL cost like 10-15 dollars more per month than what I already pay. But I really do have my eye on the thunderbolt. I have gone in like 3 times to the verizon store to play with it. I am a little bit concerned with battery life, and I don't want to pay extra for 2 GB worth for tethering. Yes, I understand you can root and put new ROMs on the device, but that process still confuses the crap out of me since I have never done it before. The other thing that i get stuck on is that I am a terrible decision maker, so I am kind of scared of making a bad move and regretting it (like buying an HD2.) So I guess that my question is (especially for you former t-mobile customers) is why do you like verizon? I'm not asking you to convince me to switch, I just want to know why you like verizon. Is there a reason you don't like verizon? I don't think I need to ask why you like or dislike the thunderbolt, since I have found plenty of posts for that. But hopefully a few of you will give your two cents
Well, from what I can say, I'd honestly say that if you main concern is speed, verizon is the way to go, if you lookin for a balance, maybe look into sprint. They have 4g phones (the evo, and the evo shift) being almost the same as the inc I just owned (I ran an evo rom, radios, and battery), as they have decent prices and coverage and 4g. T mobile I have never used or been a fan of, but if they work, why change? They will catch up in a bit I'm sure. I've always been with Verizon as I'm on someones plan, and could never afford the insane rates myself. really though I'l check to see what you need, what you want, and what you can afford. Assuming sprint is good in your area, I'd highly suggest an eve/evo shift as a balance, but I can't really give you a definite answer. I have a thunderbolt as of he last few days and like it. I can't say I love it even with the 4G speeds being impressive at the moment. Just waiting for some more hackers and HTC to give us the code we need then I may love it.
Hope that helps a bit and I didn't bore you.
I moved over from AT&T this past summer because well I really don't like AT&T and even as a priority customer on an iPhone I had terrible coverage/service. I made the move to Verizon initially for the superior network/service. I am paying significantly more as I'm no longer on a family plan w/ my brother who didn't want to leave his iPhone...
And if you do come to Verizon by the time the free mobile hotspot promo ends I'm quite sure the hacker/developer community will have greatly simplified the rooting process and there will be custom roms/kernels to optimize power. If not the extended battery add on doesn't cost too much and doesn't add to much to the overall size, I grabbed it for those days I'm traveling. And there are tethering options that don't require monthly payments/limits that don't require root.
I'm loving my thunderbolt, though I agree w/ kdb424 I'm looking forward to some further development on the custom roms/kernels front. I only have rooted currently to get rid of the bloatware & access to the root apps, but can't wait to have some more custom roms to play with. But well currently seemingly the community is waiting for HTC to release the kernel source.
But again I love Verizon for the service/quality of network/helpful employees & I am definitely liking the thunderbolt even though it is a significant change in size from my Droid Incredible.
Holy massive block of text!
I would recommend checking out which carrier best serves your personal needs. Verizon is a little pricey if you cannot get any sort of discount (through work, family, etc.)... but they also have amazing coverage and an impressive start on their 4G LTE network.
I understand why you may not want Verizon though. Sprint is a tad more affordable and can offer great devices and service depending on your area.
I was with TMobile for about 8 years before switching to Verizon a week ago (relocated for work and had no data coverage with TMobile at my new location).
Well I have looked at the options. I might get a new job in Elko, Nevada in which case only Verizon and AT&T have any decent coverage. This is also another reason why i ask. And I doubt Elko would be getting 4G any time soon.
Oh, decisions decisions!!
Well I have an upgrade coming Sept.11th. I am trying to decide between the inc2 and the droid bionic. What do you guys think? The specs on the bionic are awesome the only real issue I have with the bionic is the fact that the bootloader may never be unlocked, it does have root however. Being able to tinker with my phone is a must have. There is no 4g in my area so that really isn't an issue, I am fine with 3g.
znel,
For some info on the Bionic (I haven't been there myself but it sounds impressive), this guy has posted some reviews and 24 videos of it.
http://www.androidcentral.com/droid-bionic-reader-review-continues-dozens-videos
Also, the Samsung Fascinate sounds like a really nice phone too, and the upgrade cost for it right now is $39 (though that may be for a refurb, can't remember).
Hope you like whatever you get. I've got another 6 months before my upgrade is available.
personally i like sense ui (just cant get away from how smooth it is), so if 4g wasnt an issue, id probably take the inc2 (was actually my first choice till i heard that LTE was amazing for verizon). dont get me wrong, the bionic looks amazing and for about 2-3 weeks i was dead set on buying that till i realized that the price for it is kinda outrageous for me. $299.99 is too much for a phone in my opinion. the x2 is actually a better option in my opinion at $199.99 if u dont have 4g and dont plan on getting it for future preparation.
now im more interested in the thunderbolt mainly due to such a huge dev community. my upgrade is coming up on the 23rd so i gotta prepare. also amazon has the thunderbolt for upgrade with $119.99 on individual plan or $179.99 on family plan ($0.01 if new contract -_-)
Android police or Androidcentral also said that Amazon is offering the Bionic at $179 for upgrade also, but if you like Sense better, stick with something you like. Or you can prob. get an Sony Experia Play pretty cheap for an upgrade, if that gets your interest up. It seems to have a pretty active developers group on here too.
pretty sure its $249 for upgrade for both individual and family plans on amazon. the $179 price is for new verizon customers i think
My wife and I are up for an update as of tomorrow. Has anyone upgraded using newegg or any other place along that line? Dinc2 is free with upgrade and tbolt is $119 with upgrade. Sweet deals and I'm not sure I'll get close to that thru Verizon.

What a tumultuous last 1 1/2 years w Sprint. I had an EVO, nexus s 4g, epic 4g... While not bad phone at all I must admit I missed the service. I will say that the EVO was my favorite. That's why I'm here today, I really liked htc. Samsung has great phones. My wife still owns sprints galaxy s2 and it is phenomenal but damn, you really have to be under the umbrella of coverage.
I gave up the fight. The hope. The pleading and believing that Sprint would blanket me in the wariness of great service in middle ga...I gave in. I am back w the big red evil empire that is Verizon and I choose the rezound for many reasons. I do not regret it. It so far is fantastic. I am very happy with this device as mine clearly isn't a "wednesday" device. It operates great. Screen is great. Just as many previous htc phones I expected a few quality points and am more than impressed.
Just wanted to rant a little and say how happy I am to be back on a real carrier for my area.
Welcome back to the dark side .
Ok so my EVO 3D shattered today. So I need to get a new phone. I don't want a replacement I'm tired of the 3VO. So here's my dilemma (I'm currently on Sprint, obviously):
• My contract is up so I can choose to renew or start a new contract elsewhere.
• I like the Sprint Galaxy Nexus, I can get that for $200 but there is no LTE in Orlando (Or anywhere for that matter)
• I think the At&t One X is beautiful (love the white). I can get this for $150 (Radioshack) and the there's LTE in Orlando.
• I think the HTC EVO LTE is hideous (color and material combination). I can get this for $200, but again no LTE.
• I've been following the Galaxy S III rumors since I can remember and I like what I see from the leaks. But the truth is we won't get this phone, in the US, until at least 3 months from the Thursday announcement.
So do you guys think I should get one of the current phones available, if so, which one? Or should I be patient and wait till Thursday and see what the S III announcement is all about in terms of availability?
*One thing to keep in mind is that I already have an At&t contract with two lines on it. Maybe I can add a 3rd and get a nice family plan price?
It looks like it depends on your current sprint service. If you are happy with the current sprint service you get then get the Galaxy Nexus or the Evo 4G LTE. If you are not happy with sprint and like AT & T more then get the One X.
id like the one x, but no sd and no way to upgrade the battery for extended power is putting me off, but in the other hand, the sex appeal of it, is drawing me towards it, my missus has the s2, and i dont really like it
Thank for responding guys. I'm happy with Sprint but the lack of LTE coverage is turning me away.
Markospena. I'm in almost the same dilemma minus the at&t option. I am on a sprint family plan and don't plan on going to another carrier. Not having LTE isn't a big issue for me. I'm just torn between phones. My first smartphone was the EVO. Then I traded it in for the 3VO. Right now I'm between the GNEX and the 4G LTE. The GNEX is technically old hardware by now but the pure vanilla experience has me leaning in the direction of the GNEX. I've always ran cyanogenmod on both the EVO AND 3D. So I think I should just go with the GNEX. then I start thinking about its basically last years phone. So I don't know what to do. I'm not big on sense but sense 4.0 does seem to be a lot simpler and less bloated. Ughhhh haha I feel your pain.

One X, easy choice, battery is decent, your getting a day easy.
@anthrofear ...
You should take a look at AT&T's family plan. I didn't think Sprint really had one. I know with unlimited, another line is $10 less...But I don't exactly consider that a group plan. I'm in the same boat with this difficult decision but surprisingly I am leaving Sprint (early) and going to AT&T for the HTC One X. A big factor in it to be honest is the lack of 4G on Sprint for the HTC EVO LTE and the ugly design of the phone. Last, AT&T's family plan is actually going to save me about $10-20 a month. Right now I'm at $117/mo with Sprint because the EVO comes with $10 extra premium fee...Which is total crap. I can count on one hand the times I've used 4G because when doing so, the battery drains faster.
IF Sprint continues to charge a premium for 4G phones at $10/mo. ... They're horrible. Because their 4G network is mess and the EVO 4G LTE won't fall back like it will on AT&T from LTE to HSPA+. Plus AT&T has more LTE coverage than Sprint at the moment. Clearwire was a real bad idea for Sprint. I like Sprint don't get me wrong, but my usage patterns didn't prove to need an unlimited plan. 3GB and 5GB (on AT&T) is a real good amount of data. You really need to be streaming a LOT to hit that. I'm averaging 1GB/mo. on Sprint.
So if changing carriers makes a decision easier for you, don't be afraid of it. I was quite surprised that AT&T came out cheaper for two lines for my wife and myself. Plus they are unlimited too - just not to land lines...But the minutes roll over. So... I'm actually left to wonder what Sprint's edge is now. As loyal as I was...I want to actually use the phone I'm buying and save a couple hundred a year while doing so.
...And now...No fugly two tone black HTC One X and I get it Sunday
I should also note that my decision for the One X over the Nexus is that the Nexus's blacks are great and I believe turning off pixels promotes battery life, but the reviews show the One X with better (slightly) battery life, the camera is better (while I don't expect great photos, any help is great with smartphones for stability/low light - not for resolution) and most important is that the Nexus' whites look very blue to me. The tint is terrible and I'm not sure my eyes would ever adjust. I noticed it right away in the Sprint store without even holding my other phone up.
The other reason is that Google does not officially support the Sprint version of the Nexus. They are only choosing to work with the GMA versions. So with the Nexus on Sprint or Verizon you would be at the mercy of Samsung. The Nexus would be worth considering on a different carrier if my above mentioned issues are no issue for you.
One x of course

As it turns out I had to pick up a new number when I moved to AT&T today. So I still have my EVO on Sprint and the HTC One X on AT&T for a little bit.
I downloaded the speedtest.net app. Now I'm worried.
Sprint on 3G
154ms ping
798Kbps down
592Kbps up
Sprint on 4G (WiMax, not LTE)
75ms ping
7880Kbps down
1486Kbps up
AT&T on 4G (HSPA+ the fallback)
87ms ping
277Kbps down (though another test I saw 1100+ but it's unstable and takes a while to start, the graph in the app is erratic)
up? Who knows because it won't even start.
I did have LTE coverage outside so I'll run the test again in a different spot.
Pretty embarrassing that Sprint's 3G is actually faster...
Both tests were to the same server at the same time in the same location.
This really has me regretting the AT&T idea to be honest. I imagine I can just cancel but... I'll give it a fair shake and make my mind up before the return period.
I'm speechless. My major complaint with Sprint was that they wouldn't have LTE...But their 3G is pretty good! I know that'll vary based on where I am and all...So I'll do more testing from various areas.
sad face.
I regret leaving T-Mobile US for Sprint
I would RUN to the HTC One X
I stand (happily) corrected! I went outside and got 26.41Mbps down and 17.10Mbps up with 98ms ping.
WOW! I even saw a spike, in one of the tests, to 3100 some Kbps nearly 30Mbps!
I will never go back to non LTE. Which means even if data costs more on AT&T (I'll have to see how much data I actually end up using) ... It has the LTEs where Sprint does not =( and will not until this phone is old.
The HTC One X is the one you want =)

Thanks for posting this. I'm also in the same boat and was just going to wait for the White EVO 4G LTE to come out and make a decision.
However the fact still remains, I will not have LTE and not until maybe the end of this year if I stay with Sprint. I just checked my data and I barely go over 1gb and I feel that I'm always using sprints 3G/4G. I guess I'm not on it as much as I thought.
I'm now on Facebook trying to see how friends with at&t here like their service. It's a hard decision, since I only pay $50 a month for everything with Sprint. Decisions, Decisions.
OK, I know this question gets old, but I'm going to ask it anyway. I'm currently on a 4G LTE and became upgrade eligible on 8/1. The One seems like the no-brainer choice right now, but I'm reading a lot about upcoming phones like Nexus 5, Moto X, upcoming Sony phone, LG G2, etc. What would you guys do in my shoes?
My wife becomes upgrade eligible on 2/1, so I'm considering swapping my upgrade with her for now so that she can move from her iPhone 4s to the 5 (or 5s in Sept) and finally have 4G while I wait a few months for something else. That said, in the cell phone upgrade game, there's ALWAYS going to be something amazing on the horizon -- that's what makes these decision brutal. I've had every Evo since the OG, and right now I'm basically happy with my 4G LTE: rooted, S-Off, get 4G in my area, use tethering extensively, like the look/feel, and I love the kickstand. That said, some cons are that I'm not crazy about the battery life, I get launcher crashes fairly regularly on stock Sense and most Sense roms, and I don't feel that the radio is the strongest -- particularly at switching from 3G to 4G.
Thoughts?
One Max with bigger screen and faster processor, g2 with all x3 sprint lte band. The red One looks alright too. moto x is just soso with slower processor and lower resolution screen.

I'm in a similar boat but it's my wife that has the upgrade as of 8/1 and I just upgraded to the One at launch. She doesn't care much about her phone so long as it gets Facebook, has a good camera and can last her the day on one charge. We're waiting until the holiday season to see what devices are announced and what discounts are available. I'd suggest the same if you can wait. I wouldn't be able to and would have a One on 8/1, . I'm impatient. But if you're happy enough with your current device, wait for the 5s for her and get that or the discounted 5 and use your upgrade next year. You'll likely be in a similar situation though because new devices will only be a couple months away and will likely be announced in March.
There are pros and cons to buying any phone; radios, features, updates, etc. That being said, I would wait it out a little bit. Keep in mind that the One has been out for 4 months already. So if you're on a 2 year upgrade plan like most people are, the One will be nearly 2 & 1/2 years old by the time you'll be eligible again.
The next generation of phones is so much better. Have you seen the G2? It's crazy! 3000 mAh battery!
The One totally pales in comparison.
Plus, the One is riddled with defects and there's a very very high chance that you will get a defective device. Most of the people here (including me) have defects and just live with it because chances are we'll get a worse device back. Hopefully for the next generation, HTC will tighten their QC.
I would wait for a really high end Moto to arrive.
I don't recommend either Sprint or HTC, because I've had horrible experiences with both. Did you know that the one has no thermal safety system? That's caused several bricks and as far as we know, is still causing them.
Also, ask around for how good sprint is in your area. Some people got nice data with Wi-max but terrible LTE. HSPA+ is actually way faster than Sprint's LTE, and it's more developed. Of course, you would have to switch carriers to get HSPA. Sprint's 3G is usually unusable.
I really appreciate the feedback, everyone -- it's been really helpful. I've pretty much decided to hold off and see what's available in Sept/Oct, which is around the time the new iPhone would come out anyway. I'm pretty intrigued by the G2, but I think I'll regret missing out on the One's front-facing speakers, 32gb storage, and high quality body design. I've also had Sense for many generations, so I think I'll miss that, but I've got other Android devices as well and won't have a problem adjusting.
Feel free to chime in if you have an opinion on this...like someone else said earlier in the thread, it's easy to get impatient when it comes to phone upgrades -- I need a lot of convincing to hold off, lol!
My wife became eligible and I upgraded her to the One for similar reasons. Thing is I got a great deal at Target, believe it or not. They had the One for 100 upgrade, a $25discount when giving in your old phone, plus what the phone was worth. She had a blackberry and after everything the new phone was about $40. She's happy makes me happy.
Point is keep your eyes open for deals cause even though new phones are coming, some deals are hard to pass up.
My wife did the same with her BB Curve. Even after 3 years it had a $100 trade-in value and in the end, we ended up getting a gift card back from Best Buy with $22 on it! She got used to the HTC EVO Design after a week or so and won't look back to BB
photos?
if you primarily use the camera for social network stuff i'd say upgrade. it is a pretty good phone!
