[Q] EVO 3D suffering from same radio problem as nexus 4g ?!?! - HTC EVO 3D

Hi,
I stopped by the store today check out the evo 3d and did a speed test both through speedtest.net app and the flash based cnet bandwidth meter website.
Here is what i found out:
- EVO 3D on speedtest.net app averages 1-1.5 mbps download, and 1.5mbps upload on first attempt. On second attempt i got 4.2mbps download and 1.5 mbps upload. Just to make sure this wasn't a faulty phone, i tried it on the second evo 3d in the store with exact same result. They cant all be broken.
*** Same Result on CNET bandwidth meter.
- I tried the same thing on EVO 4G and got 7.5-8.5 mbps download and about 1.3mbps upload, tried it 3 times with same results just to make sure it wasn't a fluke.
THE EVO 3D IS DOWNLOADING AT HALF THE SPEED??? This is pretty bad if true, is anyone else noticing this? I tried this in NYC sprint store incase your wondering, and i made sure 4G was on and not on wifi!!
Please let me know if anyone else is seeing this.

yeah, I don't know whats up. I got an OG EVO and a 3D side by side and the OG EVO is kicking ass on 4G. I wonder if it has something to do with Gingerbread on Sprint devices...The OG I am using to test has not been upgraded to gingerbread yet...

4g been great in my area.

I saw that, but some nexus 4g users claimed they had no problems too, doesn't mean majority might. Just think it's odd, i'll try same test at another location. Guess will see soon enough as reviews come in.

Definitely better 4G speeds on 3d than 4g here in Chicago. Over 10M a number of times..rarely happened before.

having a evo 4g, a nexus 4g and an evo 3d, I can tell you that the evo 3D does not have the same issues that nexus 4G has (if you can call the nexus 4G issues "issues").
The nexus has very poor wifi reception, and only has 4 bars vs 6 for the evo, so when you have 1 or 0 bars on the nexus, the phone still works fine, just looks like it has no signal.
Also, the nexus CORRECTLY reports when you are in 1x mode, while the EVO 3D still says "3G" when you are on 1x.
Either way, the Evo 3D has great wifi reception and no antenna issues that I've experienced.

Yep WiFi strength better here too

Yes, wifi better than the NS4G.

Never ever ever ever been able to get 4G in the house, only 5-10th ft from front door. Now sitting in my couch I get 3mbs. Considering I have 48mbs cable, its not that useful, but signal wise I think its better. Although 3g seems to be a little worse on the bars? Could be the way they count bars is different now.

Consistently slow 3G speeds!

My data speeds using the Speedtest app are between .10-.30 mbps download on 3G consistently.
At the very beginning of the tests it looks like a good download speed, and within a couple of seconds, it always drops down to the .10-.20 range, and stays there until the end of the test.
My wifes Evo 4g in the same spot is getting consistent .90-1.2 mbps.
Updated PRL/Profile/Re-started/Removed battery ect several times - No changes.
Anyone have any ideas? I might be taking it back for another one....
Edit/Delete Message
Was curious about speeds since I've seen a few threads. My 3G speeds are notorious for being ****ty at home. Like what you are getting. Well I think something changed. I just ran 3 tests and well the results are:
1.08
1.26
1.48

same here, my old evo got 56k speeds here at the house but the 3d is getting about 250-300k
I had a similar problem and had the dancing signal bars issue where it was all over the place. Then I restarted my phone for the first time after keeping it on and never shutting it off for a full day and it fixed itself.
I have the EXACT issue...
My co worker still has her EVO 4G (what I just came from) and her 3G speeds are ~1000kbps while mine are EXACTLY 125kbps every time!
Something is wrong here. I'm almost certain my speeds is capped for some reason. The *2 people were clueless. I had one tell me "the phone is 3D so it might be downloading 3D everything and that could slow it down".
Totally clueless. They told me I have to take it in to a Sprint store to "run diagnostics". So I'll be doing that. If they can't fix it then I'm switching back to my EVO 4G.
I also only get between .1 - .3 mbps on 3G, and absolutely terrible latency (600-900ms).
I've restarted the phone several times and I test it each day, and I've done it in several different places. 4G seems fine, I consistently get between 4 - 5mbps.
This is my first sprint phone though so I don't have anything to compare it against except my previous verizon phone which got between 1 - 2mbps on 3G.
Hey guys, check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153371
I have done this with success on 3 evo 3D's, sounds hoaky but give it a shot!
Check if your EVDO setting is on Automatic instead of CDMA. I did the Data Profile reset and it sets EVDO to CDMA. Pings were 800-900ms on CDMA. Switched it to Automatic and pings are back in the 90-120ms.
I was getting under 100kbps for the last month...
And then tonight I've hit 2140kbps
Maybe sprint listen to my *****ing and did something or fixed something but i never hit that much with att,Verizon, or tmobile in my area...
I'm a happy camper
(sorry to rub it in your face if it seems that way)

Have sprint reset your data profile. I had the same thing happen to me. Now I get 700 to 1000 kbs...

I had this issue - Ill bet your settings in the EVOD in the data menu are set to CDMA and not Auto - Set them to Auto and it will reboot, you will get better speeds.

That really isn't that good bro....
Sure you hit just under 10 Mbit ONCE (change speedtest in settings to Mbit, not kbps) but there is ZERO repeatability, most of what you show is 3-4Mbit.
I've actually downloaded a file while tethered and got just over 1.1Mbit download speed (about 1300kbps) and it held that speed for the entire 2 gig d/l.
Umm, it was a linux iso.....yea, that's it.
Remember, there is bits and bytes and a k is 1024, not 1000 and stuff....
My Evo 4g and my Evo3d both did about the same speed and my Tmo Vibrant would run at 7-8 Mbit and NEVER fluctuate from that.
I do agree that the radios are much improved over my EVO OG
I can connect to 4g at my house where the clearwire maps show coverage but my evo or my wifes epic could never connect
My data streams are much more consistent as well.
I am hitting those speeds pretty much every time I speed test at that location- and sometimes faster.
Signal strength is generally improved as well and with the latest update I am a believer in the better wifi signal too
Wimax is really a joke. I mean its better than nothing but still, my friend from Finland got to try out an upcoming wireless carrier. He downloaded off their LTE network for 49 megabits per second. THAT IS FASTER THAN MY CABLE CONNECTION!
I don't think our radios really have an effect on the download speeds, I believe that for now, that what you are seeing is the limitation of our bandwidth.
Lol wimax is not a joke you seem to think the speed of the layer 2 wireless link between the phone and tower is the slow leg
Ever think it the carrier internet pipe an traffic

yeah, here in houston tx im getting 8.5Mbps on 4G and just over 2Mbps on 3G. Im very happy finally seeing the 6-10MBps mark for the 4G. on my EVO, i never used the 4g bc it was a batt killer, slow to connect, and didnt give much more speed. max i ever saw with my EVO was 4-5Mbps in the same location im seeing 8.5 on the Photon. def a great phone!
Its about time sprint offered a worldwide android phone, and ever better yet, its a MOTO. Ive wanted a moto for 10 years now. always used and loved the durability of the MOTO phones with nextel. they can take a beating in the field. Plus MOTO has been in realations with android since the beginning and they got their stuff down. I
Ill fight with any bugs on this phone and super excited to see what the DEVs are able to do with the code. there will and is faster fonest out, but more speed will chew more power. I think with this cpu, and battery life, GSM and CDMA radios, this phone has a LOOONG life and a long way to go. i hope she grows more interest to people and stays around for a long time. so far, im a happy MOPHO user
Im looking forward to traveling. last two months i spent alot of time in japan and Malaysia. def looking forward to buyin a SIM card, slappin it in and having good cell signal instead of climbing a 20+ story building to catch a faint cdma signal from who knows where lol

My point was not showing consistent dl. I mentioned upload. The cap is at 1500 yet this photon burst thru that.
And anyone would know how consistent cell network can be hour to hour..
I actually live in a great 4g city and I get speed higher than most claim. And consistently. & check out that ping too

Speeds seemed to skyrocket since 4S release..

Well yesterday I was testing my 3g speed and kept getting around 300 kbps now today I peaked at 2000 kbps and a steady 1k-1.7k speeds..
Anyone else notice an.increase?
mine went down.
used to get 56k lol this morning 9-22k everywhere ive checked.
im zooming at sprint speed!!!!!!!!!

I thought the same as op. Since yesterday, everything is all good!
Via My HTC Evo 3D On The Now Network From Sprint.
I am getting 1337ms ping 125kbps dl and 152kbps ul. Salt Lake City.
Download speeds increased from 300kbps (last week) to 1 mpbs this morning, located in East L.A.
230 ms ping, 215 kbps down and 680 kbps up.
Pathetic.
Yeah they shot up like crazy here.
About an hour north of LA
boom!! from my shooter
Mine were extremely slow today... facebook wouldn't even load, it was even roaming where it never does before (no idea why).
Iphone coming to Sprint was definitely the right move, I just hope they get their 3g network together soon.
I'm seeing the opposite.. kinda. My 3D used to see 10-100 kbps. Now its seeing 500 kbps, but my 4S is literally in the 10-100 kbps range in the same spot, same with my friend's Sprint 4S as well. The speed test doesn't even move sometimes.

Has anyone toggled thier LTE off? Not sure if it helps for battery

I read how to toggle it off, but if I'm in an area that has no LTE yet maybe it doesn't matter. Or is it always scanning for LT? I have great battery so far without messing with the setting, but would it be a little better by shutting LTE off?
I switched mine to cdma only, but I haven't seen any difference in battery life with it off vs on. YMMV
Sent from my EVO LTE using XDA
I believe turning to cdma only turns off CDMA-eHRPD.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
I will say I consistently get speeds 500 kbps slower when I go to CDMA only, so I'm leaving LTE on.
yes i also get much lower speeds when going to cdma only
My speeds are similar either way, except for my ping speed which is vastly better with CDMA only.

This is true....discussed a little over at s4gru about this....though still some unknown/unsolved things relating to eHRPD i think...
My speeds dropped with LTE off as well. Particularly upload speeds.
With CDMA only I was around 20-30 kbps up.
With LTE/CDMA it's twice that. Interesting to know! Thanks for the post.
just ran about 5 tests on lte and cdma only. no noticeable difference.
.22-.88, hovering around .32 on LTE
.25-.67, hovering around .38 on CDMA
ping of 260-280 on both
upload of .25-.5 on both
Central Austin (no NV improvements yet)
I tested this just now, and I don't see difference either.
my pic from another thread... all the 2000s are cdma only and the others are cdma/lte

Thank you for contacting HTC about your new EVO 4G LTE! Congratulations on your new phone! Do you love it?! I’ve had mine for about a week now and I have to say, I’m in love! I do understand how important maximizing your battery life is in your phone and I’m happy to tell you that changing the mobile network from LTE/CDMA to CDMA only will have no effect on the battery life!

LTE hand off and...?

Needless to say I'm kinda lost as to how finicky and flaky Sprint's network is. I'm not complaining (much), but I think it's kinda humorous how sensitive the 1900mhz band and the virgin LTE network is.

This was on the 1.22 firmware.
I've noticed the same thing... its pretty flaky. But I will say this... Its 10X better than Wimax ever was. And the fact that you can keep LTE on without sapping your battery down to nothing in 2 seconds is awesome. 3G is fast enough when I'm out and about. And, if wifi is available at most places I end up...
The signal meter next to the 4g is not the LTE signal. Not every tower has 4g on it so you were probably on the fringe. And the EVO LTE sucks when it comes to picking up LTE.
