I plugged in my Vibrant through it's stock cable and click "yes" so I could copy some photos into my Vibrant but when I turned off the mass USB storage, Avatar was no longer there.
I did NOT touch the SD card or even opened it up in Windows so I have no clue as to why it's not showing up, it looks like the SD card has all of it's free space available though. Is there someway to re-download avatar? I got my phone yesterday but this sucks if I can't.
Not sure but u could try and ask a new phone lol like buyers remose

you can't get it back, just go to the tmobile store and say that the movie never worked. don't tell them you did anything, that it came like that and they have to give you a replacement SD (they did to me when I messed up my avatar movie tryin to copy it to another SD)
Awww.. Also where can I find the 9 digit BAN to fill the rebate form? I have thebox and the papers T-Mobile printed out as my receipt
I had this happen to me too. Good thing I backed it up to my computer when I first bought the phone. But also, I have noticed that for some reason, this phone will delete files on its own sometimes. I've had pictures & video's gone missing without me doing anything.

i just copied the avatar movie to another sd with no problem. i wonder how that happen to you
Could it have been an ID-10-T error?
I work at a t-mobile store. I had enough customers come in with issues concerning that movie file that I ended up making a copy of it to provide an easy remedy. Some people don't realize that the movie is on the SD to begin with and they toss it in exchange for a larger one. I figure that its simpler to just copy the movie to the new card instead of hassling with exchanging phones/sd cards out.
Anyway, I would just go in to your local store and see if anyone working that day has a vibrant with them (if not see if they have one that was returned). If they're nice/competent, perhaps you can just have them make a copy for you.
As for your BAN, it is normally printed on the receipt (listed as account number or similar iirc). If not, you can get it through the online account management or by calling 611.
Hi, I'm not too sure why I can't get the avatar movie to play any more but before I go any furthur let me explain what happened, and here goes....... it started yesterday when restored my phone to have a few settings brought back, and then I made a video of my son spelling and counting so after ending the video and played it fir him to see I saw that the avatar movie file as well as the trailer went missing so I check the available space on my SD card and my fears were realized (file deleted some how) so I did the next best thing
And that was to try and recover the file with any file recovery tool I could find online so after finding a good one ( atleast that's what the cute girl on youtube said) I recovered the avatar .dcf file (and I know about DRM protection) and I placed it back on the sd card along with the trailer but as the subject of this post said it just "wont play" and since I got this phone about a month now I've never watch the movie on my device only showed off how cool it looked so am desperate guys please for any advice how to fix this issue please I await any response and thnx

Please I'm really desperate for a response so I can know if am out of luck or something can be done to amend/fix the problem please
Just go to a tmobile store and tell them....they will trade you your sd card for one that still has avatar on it.....if they have one....usually they do...your not the first to have done this....I did it when the vibrant first came out and they were very helpful

thank you very much
you can always follow the instructions in the sticky on how to odin back to stock if they cant get it to you at the store, it will have avatar on it.
Always Back up!
One thing to remember is to always have a backup of all items you put in computer even with it being on an SD card, you could copy the two files on the SD card and then you would be all set.
With that said, you will need to do this especially it you plan on modding your phone. Gaining root on your phone or boot loading it may actually remove items on your internal SD card as well. I do not know of the extent of your being on this site, but make sure you back up and make sure you read everything explicitly.
I do hope you are able to get your copy of Avatar back. Just do yourself a favor and put a copy on your desktop. One last thing you could do is in preferences of your camera/camcorder there is a setting where you can put the files you make on your internal SD instead.
sincerely

Did you try this yet?
Avatar Fix!
I no longer have the Avatar movie on my phone - when I first bought this phone I also bought a 16 gb sdhc card and put the 2gb card it came with away. I don't see what the big deal is with this movie but if you must have it do what I've done with other movies - rent a blu-ray and rip it to 720p wmv. If you don't have a blu-ray drive on your PC there are gazillions of blu-ray rips available if you learn how to search.
Same quality, NO DRM crap, can be freely copied, will play on your vibrant regardless of ROM and will play on a big screen using video-out cable, unlike the Avatar movie that came with our Vibrants.
DRM sux.

Incorrect, an Odin will not restore the 1.7gb Avatar movie file. It will restore the apk shortcut link to the movie, but NOT the movie itself.
As for the OP, sorry you had to learn the lesson to always backup your storage cards (or remove the external one) the hard way. I flashed a kernel to my phone, while I was at work, that nuked my internal storage and wiped my /data (so all my apps were gone). Luckily I had backed up my camera folder to my external card and took it out, or I'd have lost all my pictures and videos.
As for the file recovery software, good idea, except in practice I have never been able to recover a usable file from a flash-based storage. I've tried at least a dozen different tools and none of them worked to produce a working file.
If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it. Avatar isn't a very good movie and is encoded badly, imo (ton's of dithering artifacts, macroblocking) so nothing of real value is actually lost.
Odin back to stock ? are sure this will work because I'm not so sure avatar is in it

no it won't..... avatar is placed on the external SD.... you would only get the shortcut back if you odin back to stock.
you can't expect to get that file back..... its protected. regardless of where you got it from. personally i would just get it from a torrent or something. legally.... just try and see if tmobile will trade you a card that has is on it.
Getting this message for some reason, and can't find a resolution. Copying my important stuff off now, then will probably reformat with the phone.
It started when I put the card in the replacement 3VO I ordered, because my first one was acting funny. About half a day later it game me the SD message, (sent it right back). Ever since I put it back in my first one it's been giving me that message.
Anyone have any ideas? Is my SD actually just going bad? Is it a corrupt file? Something entirely different?
Thanks to anyone who can help me get this figured out. Been searching Google since, but haven't found anything really relevant to the Evo 3D.

Hard to say, but you're doing the right thing coping everything off and then reformatting. My suggestion would be to also reformat it in the phone too. If this still happens, try another sdcard in the phone so you know for sure if it's the phone or the card.
Ok. Just went through with it. Seems like it's good so far. Didn't format it on the PC, just the phone, then reset the phone, then copied only my original stuff back on. So far so good. I'll add another reply in a couple days stating whether or not it holds up.

i've had the same issue with an aftermarket class 6 8GB sdcard I used in my EVO for a year. my experience has been once you start getting errors with an sdcard, they are on their last leg.
i would look into getting a replace or have a spare, just to be prepared, as its rough modifying your phone w/o an sdcard! too bad there isnt a tool which could give us more detail on the life/reliability of the sdcard!
hope it all works out!
i had the same problem....i do not think it is the sdcard
i believe the software is forgetting parts of the sdcard and sending the error.
it happened to me on my 16gb class 10
also happened on my wife's evo 3d with the stock card.
FIX: only fix i found is to get all info off with your pc then format the card and load everything back on through the phone or pc.
if anyone knows more i would like to know.
So far so good here. Took everything off my card, formatted it in the phone, put my stuff back on, and everything seems ok. Seems like if you just take your card out and toss it in another phone that'll happen. Didn't have that issue between my Hero and this one, so I'm not sure what the issue was.

My wife just gave me one of these from Woot as an early anniversary gift this morning. Haven't even fired it up yet, but at least I had the day @ work to start looking up this and that about it...
Can anyone tell me what the plusses of rooting it would be? I have a couple other rooted devices, a Viewsonic gTablet (where it was pretty much a necessity) and a Samsung Exhibit (which had so much bloat on it to get rid of).
I've seen a few people's thoughts on why they rooted their Sony, but they're pretty scattered and some were very specific...
From what I've read here, there's not much bloat on the S tablets, and there's no custom ROMs (at the moment), so I was wondering what root would get the user (aside from the increased control over the device)? I know I could run Titanium Backup and other root-needing apps, but are there any specific apps that really improve this device, but need root? Any other functionality that I'm not thinking of that you only gain with root?
I have no problem rooting it, but I don't want to do it just for the sake of doing it, either, unless it's going to improve things.
Any opinions?
Root is a necessity if you want full read/write rights for your external SD under ICS. This is probably the biggest advantage.
I personally couldn't root (bought used) and it buggs me a bit. If I could I would immediately do it just for the cause above.
All in all: DO IT
Sent from my ICS-powered HTC EVO 3D using xda premium
So I read about that - can you explain that issue a little better? If you have the ICS update on it, you can't write OR read the external SD card? So it's basically useless?
You can read, but not write.
I'll give you detailed information tomorrow, as it is a bit longer ^_^

Bought one from Woot, received yesterday afternoon, and took about half a day to get a rooted ICS. I have a rooted SE Xperia Pro, and I like it so much that rooting gives me control over system apps. -- This may only apply to me as I'm about a minimalist for apps. I'm just annoyed with the built-in apps such as meaningless games and other plug-ins. Rooting seems the only way to get rid of them and give me more ram and internal storage space.
The other thing I went for rooting was MarketEnabler. Though it was not that necessary for tablet s.
No, I agree - I hate having stuff I don't want to and will never use installed on my devices.
I opted to root mine after all. Seemed smarter to do it now and not really need it than not do it and not be able to later...

Wait... what??
I'd still be curious to see the full explanation of this... I bought one for my bf who isn't the most technically-inclined person so I'm tempted to skip rooting and just tell him to take the OTA for ICS... up until now I was really starting to take the position that he wouldn't miss anything.
Are you really saying that nothing can write to the SD card? Like if I save a pic in a chat app, it will save it to internal memory? If a take a video with the camera, it won't go to the SD card? Not to be dramatic, but I think my brain just exploded a little...
As an aside, I'm kind of surprised that in the six hours he was using it on and off last night, the device never prompted him to take an OTA. I assumed that if the OTA wasn't forced, at the very least it would be very persistent in reminding him it was available... at least we can delay the rooting (or not) decision a bit.

Odd that it didn't remind him - mine reminded me constantly (every time I restarted it) and had a little doodad in the notification bar at all times. I finally turned off the update check in the AiO tool just to get it to go away...

To make a long story short, the fine developers of Android 4.0 decided to remove user write permissions for external SD cards. System apps can still write to the cards, but most user apps cannot. Their reason: "Well, we gave you MTP, so you don't need write permissions for external SD cards anymore." An ill made decision and a lame excuse, if you ask me, because the change now causes problems with many user apps. And this problem is not unique to Sony's tablets, it is a problem with nearly every device running Android 4.0.
If your tablet is rooted, Condi's All-in-One tool provides a quick fix for the problem.
Regarding the stock Camera app, when you take a photo or make a video, the resulting file is always saved in /sdcard/DCIM/Camera. The Camera app does not have any setting to change where its files are saved. The default action you would take (i.e., using system apps, not user apps) to move the files is to use the File Transfer app either directly or through the Gallery app (which is opened when you touch one of the thumbnails at the bottom of the camera app's screen).
I've been searching for days now, I can't find any mention of the same problem. So I finally thought I should just ask here...
Both my wife and I have an S3 i9300. Mine is 15 months old, my wife has had her S3 for only three months now. Devices are not rooted. On my previous Galaxy S phone I have mucked about a lot with custom ROMs. but this phone works so well I've not found it necessary to interfere.
However, for some time now, the Device Memory of my wife's phone has been almost completely filled up.
Out of 16 Gb she has about 650 Mb left (my older phone still had 6.3 Gb). So with 4.6Gb of System memory and some Cache and Misc., there's over 10 Gb of "stuff" on her phone. In Android 4.3 (previous, 4.2.1(?) wouldn't even calculate it) the Storage tab told us there was almost 10Gb of photos and videos on the phone as can be seen in the attached photo.
In the Gallery it showed a 1000 Picasa pictures. Too round a number so it might be more. My wife threw those out of Picasa on the PC and afterwards closed the sync options on the phone. Then we stopped the gallery, emptied the cache and deleted the data. Now the Picasa pictures are no longer in the Gallery, there's about 60 pics left in there, Can't be more than 200 Mb. But according to the Storage tab there's still 10 Gb of photo's on the phone! Not only is this phone slower than mine, it sometimes even crashes. We rebooted the phone a number of times.
I can't find those files! They're not in either SDcard, not in the level up from there marked "/" in the file manager. As the phone is not rooted and my wife doesn't want it mucked about with, I can't go further than that.
My phone is a year older and I take way more photo's than her and I have 120Mb of 'em on my phone. Other sections of the memory like the System Memory are comparable to mine in size, or way smaller, like she has less than half the number of apps I have.
My wife is an MD, she uses the phone often for patient calls. She is very dependent on it. So she doesn't want me to muck about with it. Doesn't want it rooted. Also she doesn't look forward to doing a factory reset and reinstalling the lot. Especially redoing the homescreens. She has a lot of them, which seems to work for her, but is timecomsuming to redecorate. Then there's re-freezing the apps Google and Samsung seem to deem necessary to have on there that we don't use. Without option to remove. And it might not even work, since factory reset usually leaves your personal stuff (music, documents, photo's, etc) alone.
Does anyone know how to find/remove these files?
You can use the storage manager in either File Manager or ES File Explorer to see exactly which folders take up the most space.

Look here :
Go to /data/media
You should see three folders
0
legacy
obb
Leave these three folders alone and MOVE all the other folders (which you will notice are all your missing folders and files) into the 0 folder. The only folders that should be left behind are the 3 mentioned above.
You will need a root browser to do this
SE analyzer crashes every time. No doubt because the card is so full.
I'll try the "0" method, thanks!
/ Data folder shows empty. No files. I have turned "hidden files" on.

I guess so... As much as I love android, it still is rather odd that on google android, with a stock samsung phone, upgraded by samsung ota, I need to root it to clean up a mess probably made with a google service... I'll never go Apple, but this wouldn't happen on an iPhone. Otoh, if it did I'd really be sol. Walled up, bunkered in iOS won't let you do anything.
Well, at least I have an idea where to look now.

I actually own an ipad 4. Didn't notice any more discomfort than usual on it after the iOS 7 update. Yes, there was a bug fix or two, but I had no problem.
Neither do I have a large picasa stash so my phone is fine while my wife's exact same phone is gasping for air. But probably my phone has these stray files cluttering the space as well, but since there aren't as many, I don't notice.
Keep running into walls on the iPad, though, cause of the apple prison. It's a magnificent piece of hardware, but apple treats their customers as infants and most of them seem to love it. I guess if you have no qualm with only doing what the prison guards let you...
I have it for the music apps. Music reading apps, remote control of the digital mixer for my monitor mix. Those things aren't available on android or all the apples in my house would be edible.
I especially hate the absence of Swiftkey on iOS. Or anything similar. Apple keyboard is so stupid. Such a waste of fantastic hardware ...no apple fan here.
But consider this: here we have a google os, being completelly filled up with files by a google service called picasa, and the only way to get rid of it is breaking the warranty on a three month old phone. Or shipping it back to the store where my wife will be going without for weeks. She is an MD, needs it for patient calls away from her own office. Being without a phone for weeks is not an option. It's ridiculous.

I thought so too. But the phone says there's 10gb worth of photos and videos on it and I can't find it.
Picasa is all I can think of with this phone. I'm extremely sure my wife didn't take this much photos in three months or at all. Come to think of it, I can't even imagine she had that much in picasa. We do have pretty large Dropbox accounts, but her account doesn't have much photo's. Mine does. I put our entire photo collection on there in my account which is not shared with hers.
I hope I get some time today to root her phone and finally see what it is. I hope I can undo the rooting damage with CF's triangleaway app.

I alr said dropbox do not use ur phone memory even though ur dropbox acc is large. I have over 20 gb used. And my phone is not even half full and it is only 16 gb internal no external. Picasa works the same way as dropbox too. The pics is in the server, not ur phone.

And I said I believed that too. At least I used to.
But unavoidably there is 10Gb of files on the phone.which the storage says are photos and videos. Storage then puts you through to the gallery, where the greatest number of pics by far were in the picasa folders. It's the only place I can figure out where they could have come from. There's nothing else on the phone! And the DCIM folder is empty.
Apparently there is no way to root it and unroot it again without wiping the phone or setting of some protection or counter.... So, whichever way my wife is faced with needing to reinstall and/or configure all her apps again, which will be another couple of hours. She is about fed up with this on android. She had a sgs1 and an sgs note before, and this is the so-many-est time something is wrong with an android phone. If it happens again I'm going iPhone, she says.
Anyway, ill phone the store tomorrow. I don't want to risk the warranty in case anything more serious happens to it. They better tell me what to do.
Thought I'd let y'all know, a factory reset cleared it all up. Her photos and whatsapp messages and some other stuff are gone, but it isn't a big deal. It's a couple of hours work to get the phone back to where it was. Which is a drag. But the phone is nice and clean again now.
So glad I didn't need to root and flash stuff.
Thanks for all the help and I hope this might help others.
