Install Update or wait?? - HTC EVO 3D

Has everyone installed the OTA update or are you waiting a bit to see what happens as far as rooting goes?
Sent from my HTC Evo

Iv installed the OTA and the system up dates. I see nothing different and it still says S-ON :/
Sent in 3D fashion

I would wait. If the update is not a big deal then wait. If you have to update the phone just to root it then you could do it when time comes.

I read that the update is supposed to address an issue with the phone not sleeping correctly. Mine seems to be having a slight issue with awake time. Anyone else noticing this? It has me contemplating doing the update. I'm in no major rush for root. Also I hear there's an update to the update.... Do you have to do the initial update to do this or is one a system update and the other for HTC watch?

I don't know....I am still a little gun shy of the OTA's after what happened with my EVO.
Rest it's soul..It will be sadly missed.

i say dont unless u have problems.. may affect root.

I'll gauge battery performance tomorrow and see how it goes first....

I did it. I probably wont root until the bootloader gets unlocked. There was way too many bugs to ignore the updates. No phone icon, constant sync, 100% wake time, green hornet not working, phone not restarting, etc... Didn't want to deal with all that.

I would go ahead and accept the OTA updates:
1. Currently no root. So those that are looking for exploits to achieve root most likely would do it with the phone with all the updates. Doesn't do much good to achieve root using the software level that is obsolete (now).
2. If HTC keeps their word, then there will have to be an OTA to unlock the boot loader. Can have root without the boot loader, but can't install customer firmware without access to the boot loader. And on my previous EVO 4G having custom firmware sometimes would hose OTA updates - which required me to either go back to stock or load new fireware with the OTA incorporated.
But it is up to you to decide what you feel is right in your situation OP.

Sooo.... It went over smoothly? No issues? Was your phone staying awake pre-update and was it fixed after? Or any other battery improvements? ( I am anxious to see Green Hornet to check out the 3D on a full movie)

I've done all the updates as well with no issues at all. Everything went very smoothly, and the updates weren't that large, so they didn't take long to d/l or install.
The EVO 3D will prevent you from installing the OTA's until your battery level is over 35%.

I think I'm going to take the dive.... Gotta wait til my battery hits 35% first tho, currently too low

I'm going to wait a bit. I think the update also changes HBoot so some of the Devs are holding out on updating.

I did the update (wanted to watch the damn movie - lame, I know).
I can't prove a direct cause and effect, but I believe my battery life has improved a lot with the update. However, it could just be because I finally got a few charge cycles into it (I did the OTA on day two, and had only fully discharged it once by then).

Sooooo tempted.......must fight the urge!

If you want root don't update. The updates won't necessarily break the 1st root method--but we don't know that.
Besides, my phone is running flawless....aside from sense 3.0 being a big fat sloppy hog....

I'm so tempted but think i will hold off.... I downloaded it last night but luckily my battery was too low. Now It's just sitting on my phone. I'm gonna see how it goes today at bare minimum and then decide. Besides they may have root in a few more days knowing how fast the devs work lol
Edit: just deleted the update to remove temptation lol

I'm not updated but I was able to watch the Green Hornet by adding the HTC Watch widget and running it off there. If I pressed on the Green Hornet icon in the app drawer, it would ask me to update the software. Pulling it straight from the widget bypasses it.

I did all the OTA update as well. The phone so far is flawless except for I haven't seen Tue full battery indicator yet. Love the perfomance, can't wait to root it.

Question for those with root....

How well is the radio working with older RUU? Also, how is the battery life?
Haven't really had a chance to test it. I installed SetCPU to make profiles when the screen is off and etc. Hopefully by tomorrow I will know how it goes. I only made it 8hrs on the "Out of the Box" config. So hopefully this puts a few more hours on to it.
any idea how high we can over clock?
Stock Kernel you cannot overclock
how much space do you have availible once bloatware is removed?
honestly I haven't personally deleted much of anything, as I am afraid that like other Verizon phones. I may delete a key app, that will disable the phone. Until I get a proper recovery going I have to say, you will need to find someone with more balls that I.
I suppose I could go re-flash the custom RUU that was made for rooting to get it booting again, as I have saved many people's non booting phones that way. However that would require more time than I care to waste, since I have alot of work related info I just got restored on the phone.
i sucked down 50% battery in 6 hours, not really using it much more than a few texts... and i have the LTE radio turned off in the service menu.
and, on the RUU with r/w system the phone was choppy / slow.
that sounds like my stock TB, but I use it a lot

Looks like I will wait til we can root the current firmware
LTE on the older RUU used for root is horrible.. Compared to my buddies stock TB, he's pulling over 15 meg down.. I couldn't get more than 3 ever..
Flashed back to stock and now my speeds line up exactly with his.
I am getting 14Mbps with Wireless Tether right now! Not too bad.. haven't noticed any difference with the older rooted firmware... keeping this until CM7 for TB!

{Q} People who have updated...are you reaping the benefits?

I have the webtop hack on mine so I don't have the update yet, and with no root ability yet I'm not having it. So I'm asking is there a considerable plus to having the update done? I don't have a car dock so don't care about that, battery life will never be improved, I can push the power button myself when charging, and the finger print thing....well that does drive me a little crazy. So should I take off the hack for the update and wait for root.... or just wait, because its not that great?
yep, first thing is battery is lasting long..28 hours moderate use, still 30%
fingerprint scanner works great..
free memory increased by 200 megs..
but you will lose root...
I haven't noticed any difference whatsoever.
Battery life is the same for me and the fingerprint sensor is about the same.
Free memory? You mean storage space? Definitely not RAM.
I don't know if overall stability has really improved or not. 5 minutes ago my browser crashed for no apparent reason.
After 1 day it seems like this update is a letdown. Perhaps dock users are benefitting from it. The sooner they fully release this thing the sooner they get working on an update thats actually worth a damn.
Yesterday I used mine off charger for about 12 hours and was still at 60% battery. I was shocked, but not worth the trade off for root. I'm waiting for Motorola to send me a survey on it so I can give them a piece of my mind about locking the phone down even more. I sell these things, and customers that are interested in the Atrix are only interested in it's specs for mostly a hacking standpoint. People who want simplicity get the iPhone, that's all there is to it. Blocking Psnuter is rather lame in my book. I'll be flashing back to stock then back to gingerblur tonight. The update also killed my lock screen, but I think that's because I used Titanium Backup to restore my data. Now I only have pattern unlock, and I can use any pattern to unlock. I can also just press any of the circles and it unlocks. Kindof a neat trick, but not worth root loss.

Well, I guess I'm sitting tight and not restoring for the update then.
the update is good (fingerprint better, battery life better, wifi on simunlocked device still doesnt work tho), but loosing root isnt acceptable for me at all, so i restored back to the retail sbf.

Hold up, you mean if the device is sim unlocked you can't use wifi ?
I am not sold on the update
I updated and lost root and the webtop mod. (I knew this going in)
Battery is about the same.
Fingerprint sensor is maybe a little bit better.
Touch screens and input seems quicker.
But I have had some issues:
-Wifi takes longer to lock
-On Pandora sometimes I want the screen on when I am in the car and the screen shuts down anyway.
-For the first time Endomondo had problems getting a satellite lock after the update
And the nag screen about the update bugged me as did the Motorola questionaire about rooting and mods..
I am going to wait and see if the gurus get root. If not it is back to retail sbf and restore apps and data from Titanium...

dude, just read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980047
I also received the update. To me it seems the fingerprint swipe is more reliable. The battery life is greatly improved.
I do have some issues with wifi disconnecting and reconnecting - but I think that is my router that is recycling, because my wife's iphone has the same issues, and at the same time.
welk I am happy the touchscreen works great now. Battery life I don't know I game while streaming radio. But touch screen is only thing I really cared about. More than root. Untill we can get Overclock I don't need root that badly. Cache mate, setcpu, TiBu, root explorer, and a couple more. All those for a working touch screen and a little faster unlock (slide)... don't use the finger scanner, but when I did factory out of the box it worked everytime the first time. Maybe.... "your not holding it the right way" Lolololol.
Geez, I might as well have just put a poll, because it sounds like its hit or miss down the line. I'm still staying rooted though. At least until the hsupa update comes.
updated yday and flashed back few min ago, for me there was no change at all. love webtop hack to much

Pros/Cons of new Firmware

I've been debating whether or not to upgrade my firmware to the latest and I keep going back and forth.
Can we discuss the pros/cons of doing so?
All I really know is that NOT having the new firmware limits support for most ROMS and can cause some issues. I have also heard its hard (impossible?) to go back to the old one if it was necessary to do so?
Thanks!

Pros:
ICS is awesome!
Smoother, faster, etc
Battery seems to charge sightly faster
Cons:
Bad battery life (horrible, worse than GB)
CPU overheats (sometimes to 110 degrees!)
Worse reception
Can't downgrade to old firmware till we get S-OFF
In other words, don't upgrade!
I personally have stayed off the firmware and I'm going to wait until ROMs are based off the official OTA or we get S-OFF.
There's a firmware patch anyway that lets you run recent ROMs on the old firmware, so that's a plus.
I've been running ICS ROMs for months with no issues and it's actual ICS.
Heard too many issues coming off the leak anyway.
It seems like the new firmware has the CPU running full tilt where the old firmware did a better job of governing. So the phone gets hot quick(for me screen on only) but stop using it and it cools off fast as well.

I thought the CPU issues were with the kernel, not the firmware?
For me, the news has all been good except for one thing re: new firmware...
Cell Reception.
I can't keep a call connected unless I go outside. Data is great, and overall signal quality is good... until I get a phone call. Then I immediately lose at least 2 bars! How dumb is that!?!?
I can't wait to get S-Off so I can flash the old radio back on. I'm hoping that fixes it.
Pro : no more Blue Flicker
Cons : Reboot like a zillion time a day WTF ??? Bur I think it's just me
Glad I posted this before just going for it. Seems like its not worth it at this point in time. S-off is a long was away, right? I'll just stick it out with the old one.

I do too, but I think it's more due to the Devs like Nils and lllboredlll tweaking their ROMS for max battery conservation than the new firmware.
I've just solved my rebooting Issue by doing this
1. Reboot into recovery -> Format all to EXT3 and wipe everything
2. Lock Bootloader
3. Flash the leak -> let it run till the end and will automatically reboot back into bootloader.
4. You'll notice the "TAMPERED" on top of the screen has been gone.
5. Flash the leak the 2nd Time and you'll be good.
I've been on it for 3 days without a reboot or slow down or heating issue. Now, I gotta say this leak is great in term of stability, battery life, signal (in Seattle,WA) and performance compared to Gingerbreak.
First, here's a poll on battery life. It seems most people got better or the same battery life with the update.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23874951
I upgrade to the new firmware and at first thought I was getting horrible battery life, then it got better about 8 hours with 2 hours screen on time.
Then, I decided to go back down to the old firmware and radio because Andy told me he was getting better battery life on it. I went back down, a and honestly--I haven't noticed a real big difference in battery life with screen on. Both firmwares get about 2 hours on screen time. You can get awesome battery life on either ROM If you leave screen off, but that kind of defeats the whole purpose of using the phone. The new firmware gets better battery life when the screen is off, I think.
The radios are hit or miss, I think. The 4g reception is always different day to day in my daily commutes. Sometimes I'll get a constant 4g signal. Other days it'll be spotty, while some days it just stay on 3g and then I have to put it in airplane mode to get 4g again. And then 5 minutes later it goes back to 3g. I haven't really noticed much of a difference in call quality, but don't really pay attention to that.
I may go back to the new RUU, honestly.

I guess what confused me was something in this thread led me to believe that if you used the "patch" to install from GB, you would still be on the old firmware but running ICS. I'm currently on ClearnROM ICS Pro (ICS obviously)
The very first thing I did upon getting S-OFF was to get off that darned leaked firmware.
I sugesst waiting, personally.
there's so much more negatives than positive, at least was for me.
I run ICS on GB firmware and runs great. Sense 4, does as well. the patch works very well.
also before returning to GB frimware, I was running the leaked for a while and I personally didn't notice the new firmware to be much if any smoother.
all it did was overheat and destroy my batt life.
lesson learned for me.
no more messing around until we have an option to return to normal.
I am just lucky that I didn't brick my rez in the beta s-off(which the method works great BTW!, I hope to see it released ASAP!!) and was able to return to stock firmware, and enjoy my phone again.

Just so we all know, what all did it take for you to roll back to the GB firmware when you had S-Off?

General June feature drop is actually pretty amazing

So here is the XDA article about the feature drop
June Feature Drop for Google Pixels includes At a Glance improvements, Pocket Operator, and more
The June feature drop for Google Pixel devices is now available, and you can install it on your smartphone. It has a ton of new features.
www.xda-developers.com
And it really does look kind of..... underwhelming? like nothing there is very useful or important at large.
But the update actually brought nice stuff.
Check this article for the main take on the feature drop
June Feature Drop appears to cure most of what ailed Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro units
Most Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro users have seen a big improvement in their handsets' cellular connectivity after installing the June Feature Drop.
www.phonearena.com
I myself have noticed improvements in the time to fingerprint unlock, network seems to be faster and more stable in comparison to March, and my network battery usage went down from being around 30% to around 5%!
So all in all I'm happy with this update even though it didn't seem meaningful at the beginning. It makes this phone more fine tuned and worth.
Have you-all noticed any improvements?
Are you feeling it's better then before?
Yes much better. One day in only but noticeable for sure.

I have noticed the fingerprint sensor is working better my phone seems to not get as good reception but the network is also not using 30% anymore it more like 10 or 15 which is still high but where I'm at now doesn't really have great reception to begin with

I usually wait for the update notification upon checking updates available. This time it didn't seem it was forthcoming anytime soon since my wife's P5 didn't get it either. So I sideloaded it yesterday. It took all of 7 - 10 min from recovery to reboot. Not sure what the delay is but I just didn't feel like waiting for them to do whatever the eff they need to do to release it.

Yeah, I ended up sideloading it. No issues, and everything feels a little snappier
I sideloaded it Monday afternoon. Wasn't having any issues before and am not having any issues after.
It's a little early to tell, but I think battery life has improved. I ended the day both Monday and Tuesday with a battery that was about 10%-15% higher than usual.
Being able to use music player like neutron working again is brilliant I had the update on Monday about 11pm I'm in uk
i installed June update 2 days ago. not sure if it is the update or battery guru which was installed at the same time, but now my phone ACTUALLY goes into deep sleep (as reported by battery guru)!!
Its always in deep sleep now for around 15/16hrs between charges and battery drain is down to as little as 1% per hr when screen off. Before I could lose around 20/30% from around 10pm (last phone use) until 6.30am when i pick my phone up the following morning.
One thing i am having issue with SINCE the June update is pixel launcher. Im getting errors saying it has stopped working. I Use Lawnchair anyway, but thats not the point. Just before I get the error about pixel launcher, the phone goes really slow.
A restart of the phone hasn't solved the issues and i have also cleared data/cache from the launcher to no avail.
I NEED TO CONNECT MULTIPLE BLUETOOTH DEVICES AT ONCE!
one weird error I have since updating. If I pull down the notification tab as soon as i click a notification, instead of opening it it will lock the screen
Noticed much improved battery life as well. A 2% drop in active usage and much better standby battery drain. Took my phone out of the charger at 1pm yesterday and I'm at 48% as of writing this message the net day at 6:35pm. Moderate active usage between then and now.
EDIT:
Forgot to mention that my phone doesn't seem to randomly overheat anymore while casually browsing the web.
EDIT 2:
Phone finally shut down today at 4pm, with around 50hours of total battery life and 6ish hours of screen time. This is probably the single biggest overall battery life improvement I've ever experienced just from installing an update alone on any phone I've owned.
NVM, I found the setting.
Definitely not better here battery or network wise after the June patch.

I just got my s23 ultra on Monday. Turn on phone and updated. I must say battery life isn't that great either. Once I start using my phone it goes down quickly
I haven't notice any lags after the update. Battery life seems the same as before. I just installed the update today so will see if there is any significant change. But so far seems that it's just working as intended. Still hitting 5+ hours of SOT after last a full day of use and 30% battery left no optimizations.
Seems fine here. Am on light battery profile
No difference here on VZW.
No problems on the U1 model.
No issues for me. If you have a few hiccups wait a day or 2. Apps do re-optimize after an update so let everything adjust.
