Hello,
I live about an hour away from 4G that is available in Tampa/St.Pete and was just wondering something. I could have sworn on my EVO 4G that even when 4G said Disconnected under the Wireless and Networks, it would allow me to scan for 4G.
Now 4G is a Check Mark and says Disconnected, but "Tap to scan for 4G service" is greyed out. As I might not be in a 4G Area for a few weeks, I just wanted to make sure this is normal. I read the Owners Manual and did not read anything about this.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
JJ
Just in case anyone else experiences this, when you have WiFi on and connected, 4G seems to be unavailable or at least you cannot scan for service.
I noticed that also. When WiFi is on you can turn the 4G antenna "on" but it will not scan or physically turn the antenna on unless the WiFi gets turned off, nor can you scan until it's turned off. It is basically because WiFi turns off the mobile data, ie 3G, and since 4G is technically mobile data it would do the same to that.

I have noticed that my phone seems to prefer 3G data to 4G where I live. (I'm in the Stow, OH area for those curious)
At first I thought I simply didn't pick 4G up at my house because I've never had the strongest 3G signal here either. But if I go into the Phone Info and switch the radio to "LTE mode", it switches to 4G no problem.
For some confirmation that the software wasn't being glitchy, I did a speed test and got ~5mbit down (like I said, I may not have the best 4G coverage... I get upwards of 18mbit when I'm in the Akron area). And for additional confirmation, I placed a call and was also able to simultaneously surf and do another 5mbit speed test. So it is definitely connected to 4G.
For more experimentation, I switched it back to the usual "CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto". The icon switched to the 3G symbol. I then tried placing a call, and I was able to simultaneously use data, but it was clearly 3G speed. So it seems it used the 4G radio for the call, but the 3G radio for the data (weird).
So, I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed it this kind of behavior? Perhaps in the fringe coverage areas this will be most noticeable.
My phone dose this too. I think its poor 4g service and stuff. Im sure it will inrpove eventually
Interesting...
Now I put it on the "CDMA Auto (PRL)" option. speed test indicates 3G speeds. But then I place a call, and the call AND data are both working-- at 3G speeds. So maybe this was what was happening on the CDMA + LTE mode I selected before.
It appears Verizon has some sort of simultaneous 3G technology now?? I wasn't aware of this-- certainly about time, though.
But my initial conclusion does seem to be true-- it's preferring the 3G coverage to the 4G coverage. Perhaps this is a battery life decision. Or something else completely weird is going on.
Either way, I'm plenty happy with the phone.
Has anyone else noticed behavior where turning on wifi places you in a completely different locale? I've seen this behavior for a couple of days now, and finally was able to replicate it by simply turning wifi on or off. If I have wifi on the phone says I am in Coppell, TX. However, I am actually in eastern MA, and when I'm on 3g or 4g only it correctly displays my location. I'm on Sprint for the phone and seeing this on my home network with a VZ Fios connection, at my gf's with a Comcast cable connection and at work which is a Sprint DS3 connection.

I know there is logic used to determine location based on wifi hotspots. This data can be outdated or completely incorrect.
Ideally, they seem to prefer using both GPS and WiFI to determine location. The GPS should be more precise while WiFi should give a rough larger region, but smaller than the cell tower region.
Not sure there is anyway to force an update to their data. I occasionally had this issue but as time has gone on, the issues have corrected themselves and locations have become more accurate.
Hope that helps!
I recently upgraded from the Incredible to the Rezound and find that when 4G not available, the signal drops down to 1X. Not only that, it seems to stay in 1X even when 4G is available. How can I get the phone to drop to 3G when 4G not available? The Incredible ran in 3G in the same areas that the Rezound drops to 1X. What do I have to set to get it into 3G?
Thanks for help.
both my GF and I have been having trouble with this on both our phones... We both live and work in 4G coverage, pretty strong coverage too. Yet we both see 4g drop out to 3g or 1x. Its very random, and I've had it happen right in the middle of browsing the web. (All of a sudden a page takes forever to load or doesnt and the phone acts like it has no data connection, I go to the home screen and see that I am all of a sudden on 1x..)
I recently read an article that talked about how VZW actually has a pretty major issue they need to resolve pertaining to authentication on the LTE network. I don't know the exact mechanics of it, but basically the authentication fails and you get booted off the LTE network until the phone tries to hop on it again. Right now, the two phones I have personal experiance with do not try very often to get back on and it often takes going into the wireless settings page and selecting mobile networks and going in and out of that screen a couple times, or if it is being stubborn, airplane mode, site for a minute, and then back on. Occasionally I have to reboot the phone.
It really irritated me good last night when I really needed the data connection for GPS navigation because I took a wrong turn in an unfamiliar area..
Sometimes going in and out of airplane mode helps or restart.
I'm not going to say look on the forums. Here is a quote from another thread and linked another thread.
had the same issue and fixed by this.

phone will reboot and you should get 3G back
This changes your network from eHRPD back to EVDO Rev.A. For LTE phone owners, eHRPD causes 3G to die (most of the time anyway) when the LTE network has problems. Get back on normal EVDO and you're good to go.
^ from Jntdroid on another forum (not sure if we're allowed to post to other forums here) I'm not positive on where he got it from, but this is a capability of all HTC 4G phones
I've had occasional issues with being down to 1X, but even that was only during nationwide 4G network issues, definitely get in touch with VZW about that... not that they have enough sense to fix anything *sigh*

Good luck. It's what fixed mine.

I have the same problem sometimes. Well most of the time actually. =(

I have the same issue periodically ..tho I live in a non lte area..so your suggested solution prob wouldnt be a good idea ey

Same issue here. Only happens when I go from a 4G area to a 3G area. I end up getting stuck in 1x. The phone switches fine from 3G to 4G. But when going back to a 3G only area, it by-passes 3G and I get 1x.
No toggling helps. I have to reboot to get 3G back. I also tried that fix posted above. It does not help. Called verizon again tonight.
The strange part is before we had that 4G outage a few months ago, the phone would switch just fine. Now it's a pain in the ass.
Sorry it isn't helping. It worked in mine and done exactly the way it told me. Go from 3-4g now without an issue. No 1x like before

Ive read many people complaining about LTE, but does anyone else have issues connecting to 3g? Almost always when I leave WiFi range my phone wont connect to 3g unless I restart entire phone.
Sometimes Ill pull out my phone at random places to use google search or something and Ill have full bars but no internet connection (Yes my mobile network is set to on).
This problem happens next to my girlfriends galaxy which works just fine.
Its driving me nuts!
Happens to me alllll the time. I have to turn off wifi to get my phone to connect to the mobile network. Otherwise I'll be 30 miles from home and still "Connected to Wifi"
I thought HTC fixed the Wi-Fi connectivity issue in the latest ota, or was that just the one x

Originally i had that issue on my EVO LTE. but after the updates its been fixed.
Ironically my GS3 started to not want to connect to 3G after it was in an LTE area..
So i have been using my ole reliable EVO LTE..
So after the 3.16 update, I noticed my phone was not picking up 4G. After pulling my hair out to figure out why, I traced the problem to the Sprint Connection Optimizer being disabled. Turn it on, 4G toggles on with it, turn it off, 4G toggles off with it. The previous version of the Sprint Connection Optimizer did not do this. To confirm my suspicions I reset the phone to stock and observed the same behavior.
This is quite the pain in the ass as I don't want my phone connecting to WiFi networks that I marked "remember". In addition, I don't need my phone connecting to WiFi at work (which I use for work purposes under special circumstance).
My short term solution is to forget WiFi networks but this is rather tedious. With the Sprint Connection Optimizer toggled off, I am essentially locked out of 4G. I pay for Sprint's service and I insistent on using as much of their/my bandwidth as I chose.
Can anybody else confirm what is happening. My area has relatively strong 4G coverage, to the point where seeing 3G would be a rare occurrence. I need to make sure this isn't a problem on just my device before I roam my way out of my contract.

Why would you not want to connect to WiFi networks that you mark remember?....jw
If you have the option of your local WiFi versus 4G most times I'd expect someone to want to go with the WiFi... Only time you'd want to not is in places where 4G was better connection, which in those cases I wouldn't want to mark said WiFi networks as remember...
Ill try to mess with it here see how it effects my stuff as were rolling 4G a lot now...

In most cases work wifi won't let you watch porn at work man. Total pain in the a$$. We should be able to toggle our own connections. I will say wifi is better on battery and generally faster. However there's potential risk on wifi that someone could access your device. Extremely unlikely but a possibility none the less.
In my area we don't have lte yet and the other day after installing MeanBean I saw 4G pop up in signal bar then went away then came back. Haven't seen it since. I was so excited but I shouldn't get my hopes up. Sprints been saying 4G for a long time and still nothing. Only reason I stay is unlimited data and I live the HTC evo line.
You have a better chance of winning the lottery 5 times than someone accessing/ hacking your phone over wifi without you knowing about it.
Also there are great wifi apps that tells you who is on the network your on at all times.

I have found that Comcast seems to throttle youtube traffic at certain times of the day, and I have a specific spot in my house where my wifi signal just completely drops (but still claims to be "connected.") I'm obviously going to want my phone to remember my home wifi connection, but I don't necessarily want to always be using it at home.
My situation may not be incredibly common, but it's a valid scenario where you may not necessarily want connection optimizer to run the show.

The optimizer isn't your issue there though, as the mere fact of having the network remembered in the phone will cause it to connect to it whenever within range.... Its the fact you have a remembered WiFi network saved and you want to override that in a specific location when still in range of the WiFi... In that case the only solution is to toggle it off when you don't want to use it at that specific location in your house...
Optimizers doesn't just force you to connect to your local network that's remembered as the WiFi being on will do that itself already...

You can try disabling Sprint Connection Optimizer and try purchasing Juice Defender Ultimate. If you use its location service, it will only turn on wifi in places that you turn on the wifi antenna and remember them. And if it turns it on, you just manually turn it off until its trained.
