[Q] Paired But Not Connected? - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

Even with "speach to text," my phone's 4" screen was too small to safely do much when mounted on the dash of my truck. My iPad's 10" screen was too big to mount on the dashboard. A 7" screen works. Plus, I can carry it on my belt.
My first Samsung Galaxy Tab was so useful that I locked it up twice in the first 4 days with Google Navigate, speach to text with my bluetooth headset to enter web addresses, answer emails, etc. My second one crashed apps like the browser when I overloaded it by multi-tasking.
With Mobile Hotspot enabled on my (EVO 4g) phone, Navigation on the HTC Flyer could be guide me to an address, then the phone would ring, and I'd be driving around in circles. So I took the Flyer back to Best Buy and got an HTC EVO View from Sprint. (I suppose I could have got a MiFi device, but the monthly charge would be higher.)
I used the Rocketfish case I bought for the Flye and, my old Droid X's dash mount (with the help of a hacksaw and some JB Weld) to mount the EVO View just above the radio on my dashboard. I discovered the cab is too noisy for the EVO View's built in microphones at dashboard distance. (And I am kind of kicking myself in the behind for not figuring that out before I took the Flyer back.)
The next step was to sideload the Vlingo app to get around Google Voice Search's lack of Bluetooth support. I paired five different bluetooth headsets to The HTC EVO View. Two of them connected to Media Audio, but none would connect the to the bluetooth headset microphone.
Sprint's Technical Support tried to be helpful. But all they could do was suggest taking it back to the Sprint store. The guy at HTC's Technical Support was able to round-up an EVO View, a HTC Flyer, and several bluetooth headsets. He called me back to tell me he got the same results I got.
So I went to the Sprint store. We paired all of my headsets to the Evo View on display and none connected beyond Media Audio. I pointed out that Sprint's website lists several bluetooth headsets for use with the EVO View. So they paired a couple of the listed headsets and none would connect with anything but Media Audio. (But all of the bluetooth headsets we tried easily paired for microphone input on the keyboard of the Samsung Galaxy Tab.)
Sprint's Customer Retention Department agreed to recommend a disclaimer on their website if my accusation that they are misleading Sprint customers about Bluetooth on the HTC EVO View turns out to be true.
The guy at HTC's Technical Service told me their internal documents indicate the device has A2DP Support (Media Audio), but he found nothing indicating HFP Support (Hands Free Profile). By providing pairing instructions without a disclaimer about the tablet's lack of HFP Support, I believe HTC is misleading customers. Anyway, he promised to get back to me on Thursday with HTC's "response" to this.
So I have two questions: Is anyone else bothered by this?
And for anyone qualified to answer: Is it possible to get Bluetooth HFP (voice) Support on the HTC EVO View / Flyer with an app or a hack?

The Tech guy from HTC called me back yesterday to say they left out HFP (Hands Free Profile) on the American versions of the HTC Flyer and the HTC EVO View 4g. (I'm not sure if the European version of the Flyer is also missing the HFP Profile.)
Nobody replied to this thread, so I assume not that many people care. But it just irritates the heck out of me that neither HTC or Sprint disclosed this anywhere on their websites or in the either of the device's User Manuals.
I do not have enough posts yet to put this request in the proper forum.
Is there any way to get the bluetooth HFP Profile into the device?

I was actually wondering this myself. I tried to hook up my bluetooth to use it with Tango, now I know why it didnt work. Hopefully they pit out an update that fixes this.
Sent from my HTC EVO View. 7" of 4g fury!

I have the UK 3g version and it also lacks the HFP profile.
I rooted the flyer and tried to dig into the system files to see if there is a way to enable this. nothing to date worked (maybe because we don't have perm root with nonad unlock so my hacks didnt actually work).
It is indeed annoying they chose to leave this profile out. many VOIP apps can use this BT profile to make *proper* voip calls using the mic on the headset.
There is a "phone" ROM floating around this forum for S-off devices that enables this BT profile. I am hoping that once we get S-off somehow we would be able to port that profile in.

Thanks for the replies.
As I mentioned, the Technical Support guy I talked to at HTC took a couple of days to get back to me because he wanted to find out HTC's position on the HFP profile on their tablets. I got the strong impressiom they are not against supporting HFP, they just did not think it was necessary.
He stressed to me that even though HTC will not respond to posts in their own support forum, or even manage the forum by moving posts to where they should be (which I think is incredibly stupid), their technical support people (including the people who make decisions about stuff like this) watch the forum closely. As naieve as it sounds, he told me the best way to get the HFP bluetooth profile included in an update is to post about the problem in their forum. He said if enough people respond, it will get their attention.
As open and helpful as both of the HTC Technical Support people I talked to were, I still believe both HTC and Sprint are both guilty of false advertising and misleading customers by by not disclosing that bluetooth only works with media audio on these devices. I still intend to look into filing a complaint with the FCC, and my State's Attorney General. My hope is it will be easier for them to activate this profile on these devices than defend the complaints and potentially revise their websites and User Manuals, etc.
And, as I said before, I sure hope someone here can figure out how to make the HFP bluetooth profile work before I have to make a decision to spend a lot of money on a wired (noise cancelling) car kit or replace the EVO View with a (in my opinion) very inferior Samsung Galaxy tab.

But this is not new. HTC Flyer, all versions worldwide lack of Phone capabilities, and that include sall related items and specs such as the Bluetooth protocol for handsfree talk.
We still don't know why they took this decission, i don't think it was that expensive to include those items...
Any one knows if Honeycomb is able to handle phone calls?

This has now been resolved. I was able to enable Headset / handsfree profile once i got S-Off.
Please see my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185688
Thanks.

awesome phone - any feedback ?

just about to buy
1. does it have wifi ?
2. WM5 - so push would work
3. Anyone know who to unlock (does it use c550 unlocker) ?
rgds
no Wifi
Push enabled
no idea how to unlock
the keypad is bad, the TV is pretty poor....unless you want to watch in a wide open space near a town centre....
the DAB radio is pretty good.
tx. a pity about the wifi
is the tv service limited to virgin only or after an unlock any tv can be streamed?

will work on any network. It uses DVB like freeview not GPRS
It must post back to Virgin or something so they can charge PAYG customers the monthly rate, it (the TV) may not work with another network's SIM in it.
The TV service will work regardless of SIM.
However it uses cryptkey encryption, similar to satellite services.
Therefore, every so often Virgin/BTmovio will change the crypt code and the TV will stop. When this happens you will need to reinsert the virgin chip until the TV re-opens, after which you can put in your other chip.
Note:1. for PAYG you will have to start paying after 3 months, except for BBC1 which is always open.
2. DAB radio will always work (well, whilst DAB is still broadcast in the UK )
rgds
NO A2DP bluetooth audio (manual says it does, but Virgin must have removed it for some reason) :-(
Lobster feedback
Had mine for a few weeks now - very pleased for the money, replacing a trusty but declining C500. SIM unlocked (paid) and running on BT mobile (Vodafone).
TV is watchable (just); radio is great; otherwise an excellent value up to date smartphone, albeit with some minor (to me) keypad handling issues.
Best features:
- radio
- screen quality
- price
A few small niggles:
- no case yet and the plastic over-screen gets scratched easily
- ITV1 won't register now (says Virgin bites not available, try later)
- bit of a pain having to plug the wired headset in as an antenna (which seems to get tangled easily - looking for a way to keep this tidy)
Amazed there's such little interest in the phone at this price...
with the tv i dont like the fact there is no full screen view or at least not that i can find...
the radio is great. the tv channels are very limited but hey do the trick now and then
My views on Lobby.
I would also have liked the ability to screen capture from TV to use as Wallpaper.
Great phone, though. I like the bulkiness. It's also different to the norm. Very clear screen & talk. easy to get around. pretty awesome DAB quality. TV is watchable if really bored.
Surprisingly good piccys from a 1.3. Very adequate. They blow up to monitor size ..... just.
Downloaded Emails from Hotmail with ease.
Definitely better than any phone I've had to date.
Nice feature being able to record sound from external source and use as a ringtone.
My lobby over the last 5 months
I got this phone in December - Virgin pay monthly contract.
Good points
- Screen resolution
- Battery life (normal use)
- Lots of great applications can be installed
- DAB radio - this is the best feature.
Bad Points
- Non really
- TV not great - few channels
This is my 3rd Smartphone (MPX200, MDA Compact) and cannot fault it. It is was a flip-phone (clam shell) then I'd be even happier. Still, you can't have it all.

All I want for christmas is to be able to use what I paid for

I've been modifiying PDA phones for a while now but this is something I can't get over/should have expected from Sprint. GPS is present yet unusable on my Titan. I just now unlocked my titan and flashed to dcds 1.5.7/1.40.0 and I am hoping to be able to use the GPS with tomtom 6.
The thing that puzzles me is I read a post stating an indiviudal was using tomtom 6 on his mogul! how did he do it?

he must be using a bluetooth gps device
so for now there is no way out? Is there any revision of this phone (Alltell, etc.) that has GPS enabled for application use?
av0, let's set the record straight here for a moment.
The mogul uses new hardware- chips that haven't been seen inside of Windows Mobile devices before. These chips allow services that haven't been available before either, such as EVDO rev. A and possibly assisted GPS.
Now, these chips may be capable, and HTC may be able to write drivers for it, but Microsoft never released the proper modules to control and take advantage of them. So, in the case of Rev A, we're waiting for MS to update some of their code so that HTC can release a new firmware, which will then be distributed to Sprint, Alltel, VZ, etc...
But for now, we have to play the waiting game. It doesn't exist on ANY carrier just yet!
Now, the GPS is the same thing... this particular GPSOne chip is new to the windows mobile scene. It supports some pretty nifty modes, including real stand alone GPS with an assisted mode- IE, uses the tower triangulation to get an even faster fix, then switch over to standalone mode (as opposed to the traditional way which is currently found in some PPCs, in which getting the initial fix can take up to 5-10min). Its in the chip specs to do this, but as far as I know MS's GPS modules only support standalone GPS information (no assisted faster fix), and its only been a rumor that Sprint/HTC would actually take advantage of this capability anyway. Either way, the phone was released before Windows Mobile was ready to use these higher-end features. We're waiting for them to catch up.
In the mean time, they removed GPS from the advertising, and Rev A has always been "coming soon".
Sit back. The rest of the phone finally works great now (thanks to 2.17 ROM, and a lot of great custom roms based on it), so one thing at a time. This great phone is going to get even better soon!
Concerning GPS...
Our Titans have the chipset for it and according to this FCC document, some of us (excluding Sprint Moguls) may have the antenna as well.
Someone in this thread extracted an Italian version of Kaiser's GPS files which I installed one morning and after playing around with it for about an hour, I couldn't get anything going. My Titan is cradled next to a large window all day and by early afternoon, I noticed a GPS icon in my top bar. When I picked up the phone, it went away and I was never able to reproduce it. I have no idea if it means I was receiving a GPS signal, but I'm hoping developments in activating the Touch Dual's GPS could lead to a working solution for Titan.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Touch Dual have the same chipset as the Kaiser?
The Titan uses a slightly modified Qualcomm chip for CDMA, and as such it should not be any suprise that the drivers from the GSM chipset don't work.
I'm of the opinion that the GPS control part of the chips are not the same because of the way CDMA uses the Assisted part of AGPS. Trying to port drivers from another existing device is a fruitless effort as no one has yet written drivers for our particular chipset.
THEY ARE NOT THE SAME.
Just sit back and wait for Sprint or someone to release it first. Then we can start porting it to all the other devices with this chip.
good bit of info on this thread. thanks guys

** Correct.
if this new update from sprint/htc brings rev a and GPS, will that make it possible to enable the GPS on the verizon xv6800 (by flashing the rom or whatever it takes)
OMG the doors to the heavens above have opened.
I'm not even asking for that much! I just want the phone to not lockup and I want to hear my callers on bluetooth! This phone was so rushed out the door is shows bad.

[Q] GrooveIP vs Line2

I am wanting to use my Evo View 4g as my primary device (phone calls, text, everything etc) and sell my smart phone. I see that line 2 has a $10/month charge and my buddy uses it with his ipad2 and it works pretty well. I saw grooveip as another option and just wanted some thoughts and/or ideas on one or both. I would also like to use a BT headset with this setup if possible and carry the view 4g in my pocket. Anybody who can give me some insight on which service they would recommend and why, I would very much appreciate it!
Thank you!
Ben
I''m using GrooveIP with my Flyer. It's free over goggle voice and seems to work quite well most of the time. Has a lot of options to play with to improve voice quality, depending on your Mic setup (speaker, headset, etc.) I use it as speaker phone with the built-in mic. Works pretty good.
Why is it with Ip Groove the bluetooth wont work but there is an option for using bluetooth?
I use grooveip and I love it but where I work my 3g signal sucks (thanks Sprint) so I think I'm going to have to get a regular phone and I so hate that I can't use bluetooth.

Flyer vs View: Really a difference?

Hey guys,
I just got a View and, of course, it came with HC. From what I can tell Revolutionary doesn't sport my hboot (1.14...) So I guess I'll have to register with HTC to get s-off. But, most of the threads here seen to deal with the Flyer.
What is the difference, if any, between the Flyer and the View?
Thanks,
JB

Go into the evo forums and you'll find instructions on how to root and flash hboot etc.

I have a similar/related question. If you had the option of buying the Flyer Wi-Fi and the Sprint-branded View for about the same price, which one would you pick? I am not really interested in entering a contract with Sprint, so that is not a consideration. I want to base my choice on ease of updating (perhaps rooting), and availability of ICS down the road. Any advice will be appreciated!

There is not much we can say about future updates, but I think there are more custom ROMs for the flyer. Also, if you see planning to use wifi only, you need to use airplane mode on the View, otherwise the 4g radio will drain your battery. With airplane mode, I cannot turn on Bluetooth (although others can for some reason) and the lock screen won't show shortcuts in airplane mode. Overall, I think that the flyer is a better choice, though I still love my View.

Flyer already has working ics ports, but not everything is working. As far as the comparison between the two, for me, 32 gb view vs 16 gb flyer, black on the view looks better than the flyer, yes there is more flyer support in the forum though. But going to your airplane mode part, it doesn't bother me, I use it for wifi only and can enable Bluetooth even with airplane mode on, I disabled the activation screen after boots, so that's another issue down the drain. It pretty much came down to the price & storage to be honest, for me that is. Got my view for $260 NIB, options for the flyer were in the $300 and that wasn't even new.

There is a rumor going around that an HTC rep confirmed the Flyer would be getting ICS soon. There has been no similar news for the View. Just a consideration.
Just to put this out there, but a 3G Flyer will have a greater resale value than the View due to the limited capability to use it on multiple cariers. If just comparing a WIFI FLyer to View for me you still go Flyer because there is more development.

I have the view (Wifi Only) I do not use airplane mode.
I downloaded Anycut (Free from the market)
I created: New Shortcut -> Activity -> Tablet Info on my home screen.
Press that and choose turn off radio. Done.
The drawback is that you must turn off the radio each time you reboot the device. But it's 2 taps now. Tap the shortcut, Tap "Turn off radio".
(This is stock Rooted HC)
Wifi only users: The Flyer is certainly a better choice at the exact same price point. But at $229 for a view and $300+ for a flyer.. I'd take the View... Spec wise, they are identical. (This assumes the Pen is not included with either device)
I'm faced with a similar situation- used 3g 32gb flyer vs. Sprint view.
I've been searching reviews and trying to search boards- but I've found a lot of incorrect data.
I've read the 3g flyers are micro sim not proprietary USB jacks... I'm thinking that's wrong and it is the standard HTC flyer connection?
I've also heard only the view has altimeter and barometer and dedicated GPS? Again, I wonder if that comparison meant to say compared to wifi flyer vs. 3g...
A. Can the US 3g flyers all be sim unlocked? (I think it's a us cellular one)
B. View comes with GPS hardware and has a messaging app- does it need a 4g data paid account for the mesaging or GPS antenna to work, or if you have a sprint phone can you view sms on the tablet AND the phone simultaneously? (would love that-I'd buy it just for this) and will the GPS antenna still improve location when connected to wifi?
C. any other differences hardware / software for either?
I do plan on rooting either- any known issues of the two I should be aware of?
Any differences between the 2 in Honeycomb? (Kinda assuming they're still on GB... but I'll find out soon enough)

simultaneous voice and data?

I got a Photon 4g, and I wanna know if there's anyway I can have simultaneous voice/data on 3G, I know its possible over "4G" (Wimax), and I really don't wanna buy a new phone outright. Will SVDO work on the Photon anywhere?

To my knowledge this is not possible. Would be hella useful though.
only way is if "voice" if via VOIP such as google voice, skype or SIP provider.
I do it all day! WiFi and I talk and di email and FB! L

Smartphones have so many features nowadays that it is honestly difficult for any given person to make use of every one of them. Hence, there are some features that are diamonds to some and useless to others. Just because you in particular don't have a use for said feature, it can be be extremely useful to someone else. For instance, my girlfriend now lives a good 150 miles away. So a lot of our casual conversations are done for long periods of time over our phones. Should I be focusing on our conversation? Sure. Do I also wanna check xda, read an article with her to keep the conversation rolling, maybe watch a funny YouTube clip or something? Definitely. My point is, its not a feature that is visibly useless for everyone. You just don't have a use for it.

you might have an email, or be in your car using it as the GPS with the phone on speaker or bluetooth, or wanna check an email you're talking to someone about, etc. A lotta times, when I've been on the internet with the Photon, I've missed calls, and that includes using my Strava cycling app, which simply maps where I'm going.
Calls/texts will interrupt downloads which is annoying when trying to download large files over 3g

As others have mentioned, if you have VoIP service independently of Sprint, there's nothing to stop you from using it on your phone. You can do a complete end-run around Sprint and cobble your own adhoc SVDO-ish work-around today. Your battery life will totally suck, and you'll be paying more money for VoIP from some thirdparty provider, but you can do it. Just run the client, forward your calls to your VoIP number, and you're in business.
So, why can't SPRINT do it? Simple. The service we all call "Call Forwarding" is heinously inefficient. It was invented ~25 years ago, and only works for its intended purpose (adhoc forwarding of calls to arbitrary numbers) because there are just a few people using it at any given point in time. If EVERYBODY (or even a large plurality of Android owners) tried doing it at once, Sprint would hit a hard limit beyond which no more users serviced by a given switch could forward calls until somebody else discontinued forwarding to free up a circuit (remember, ESS voice calls are circuit-switched, regardless of any packet-switched magic that might occur at the backhaul and trunk level. You'd be amazed how much metaphorical WD-40 and duct tape still gets used behind the scenes at Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile to glue 21st-century wireless and 19th-century wired phone circuits together & make wireless calls look like landline calls to the PSTN).
To implement large-scale SVDO that's cost-effective, scalable, and sustainable, Sprint has to make much bigger changes that involve their switches (enabling them to terminate calls directly to VoIP instead of relying on adhoc ESS-type call forwarding) and signaling (sending notifications via the same mechanism used now to notify the phone of incoming calls, deliver text messages, and carry Google & Apple's push notifications). That way, instead of forcing your phone to establish and maintain an EVDO or LTE connection 24/7 and use it to poll for incoming calls, it can still use the more power-efficient 1x method, and simply notify the onboard VoIP app that there's an incoming call when it happens.
At the end of the day, it's one of those cases where it's easy for nimble, tech-savvy, and highly-motivated individuals willing to spend a few days learning and experimenting to take matters into their own hands and hack something into working for themselves, but it's a much bigger job to make it viable for the unwashed masses who want it to "just work" transparently without disclaimers, gotchas, and devastated battery life. It's the same reason why iPhones don't have wimax on Sprint. Apple point blank refused to even consider implementing something where users have to toggle it manually and be aware of their connectivity options at all times to really make it work right. Think I'm kidding? Find a nontechnical Sprint customer with wimax-capable phone, and check out their 4G settings. 95 times out of 100, they'll have 4G disabled, even in cities where there's been 4G service for more than a year. They went to the Sprint store, complained about not being able to "surf the web" (WE know their phone was probably thrashing back and forth between 3G and 4G & kept spending 5-20 seconds at a time in "no network connection" limbo), the employee toggled 4G off, handed the phone back to them, and they never had any clue what the employee actually DID. They were just happy that their phone quit endlessly saying they had no internet connection. ;-)
