[Q] ROMs and apps WITHOUT Verizon network. - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone, I posted a while back about moving to Germany, freezing my Verizon plan, and keeping the phone as a kind of PDA.
Anyways, it worked... kind of...
I have it permanently in Airplane mode (since it's pointless to have it try to connect to anything anyways since it's GSM here). But if I want I periodically use the Wifi.
Well that's a no-bueno with the Android market and it wont let me download/update/other/etc.
I just want to be able to throw on some good apps that I used to have like my Gameboid, the different angry birds, and maybe some other usefull ones that don't require 3g/network connections.
Is there a way to manually add on my apps? How about getting the Android Market to play nice with Wifi?
Also, is there anything special I need to know about swapping the ROMS?
I was thinking about trying the CyanogenMod 7 (I have the Community Rom right now).

Nothing?
Even if it's just how to manually install apps it would be useful :-\

[Q] Remove VZW Cr*pware Without Custom ROM?

Just got a shiny new Fascinate, and about to start customizing it. I would like to remove most of the large collection of cr*pware that came pre-installed, bing included. Is it possible to install superuser and uninstall this stuff without risking bricking the device?
I'm a relative Android newb, and I'd rather not dabble in custom roms as this is an employer provided phone and I'm not comfortable blasting a new firmware on it yet.
Also, if I succeed in removing the aforementioned software, can / will it be restored by resetting the device to defaults, if that's even possible? Or will I need to root the thing in order to install backup software?
Lastly, if I want to use a keyboard other than swype or the default android, do I need to move the .apk to the /system/apps folder like I did on my Nook?
Yes, you can simply root your device and not install a custom ROM. Yes, you will have to root in order to de-bloat, so be aware, although it is very simple.
Rooting walkthrough: (very painless)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948722
Once rooted, download Titanium Backup from the Android market and de-bloat to your heart's content.
You might want to consider downloading ROM Manager (from market) and making a full backup of your rooted phone (called a Nandroid backup)
Keyboard: you can search the market for alternate keyboards (easiest method) or use adb push to /system/app if there is one you really want to use.
Cool, thanks for the response!
I'd already rooted, which would have been completely painless if I were running winblows. Nevertheless, after getting adb functional on Ubuntu it was relatively simple.
I've removed all the 'stuff' I don't want, any idea how to reassign the search button so it isn't pointing to bing also?
With Titanium and ROM Manager, would I need CWR or some other alternative boot app installed to restore this?
Also, I see lots of references to odin which is apparently needed for flashing over USB in the event I decide to take the plunge and dabble in custom roms. Anyone know if there's an equivalent for linux / osx? It astounds me that an android dev community such as this seems to be so windows centric...
for linux and mac use Heimdall, an odin clone.

If you're still running EB01, then Bing search is hard coded. However, many custom ROMS remove this. I'm currently using SuperClean 2.9 and have both google search and google voice search (long press search button) set as my default.
A definitive list of Fascinate ROMS can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013312
To restore, I would definitely use CWR, as it is the recovery method used by ROM Manager. This is done either within ROM Manager (Backup/Restore) or by booting directly into CWM. Just make sure ,with a Fascinate, you only use CWR version 2.5.x.x, since version 3.0 doesn't currently play nice with the older amend type scripting.
It downloaded EA28 right after activation - I believe it said this is a corporate contract build, which is part of why I'm reluctant to burn a custom rom.
Outside of the bing search and the speakerphone being too loud, I really have no qualms with the phone at this early stage.
Thanks for the info about CWR and such - I've been lurking here for months and find the more I read the more confused I get.
Best not to go tinkering with corporate property- no sense in losing your job over a phone.
The speakerphone volume should be adjustable via the volume rocker on the side while activated.
Yes, there is a lot of knowledge available here, lol. Just remember, everybody here started somewhere.
Funny nick btw...

I'm not worried about that - they wouldn't fire me over a phone, I'm the guy that keeps their accounting system up at five nines. I just don't want to have to schmooze the office manager to get me a replacement if I brick it after less than a week. I'll let the new wear off a little first.

Yeah, but at it's lowest setting it's still loud enough to be heard 30 ft away. Not a huge issue.
Ok, last question and I'll start spending a little more time searching, I promise. What's the deal with wifi on these things? Can / will they go through the wifi to get to the cloud? It doesn't appear that mine is doing this when I'm at home where 3g is very hit-and-miss. Are there any settings to tweak? Or is wifi just there for the DLNA server and tethering? I guess i was a bit spoiled by my blackberry in that this functionality (wifi handover) worked very well on the curve.
I haven't noticed any issues with wifi and cloud applications (dropbox, evernote, etc)
If you just mean internet connectivity in general sucks on wifi, perhaps it is more a router/ISP issue and less of the phone. Might do you some good to download a wifi analyzer to your phone (market) and make sure your dB strength is adequate, as well as make sure your router is broadcasting on the least congested channel. Have you tried connecting on a different wifi network? (work, restaurant)
Already have my AP set to the channel with the best noise floor. So I don't think it's an RF issue - all my other wifi devices (two laptops, two Nook tablets, and formerly my blackberry 8320) all work as well as could be expected with the same AP configuration.
I guess what I'm wanting to know is if there's a way to setup the IP/PPP stack on the phone to default to wifi for data. I guess I need to delve into the innards of their network config to find this out. Just thought there might be a GUI config menu somewhere that I was missing.
I'm not worried about that - they wouldn't fire me over a phone, I'm the guy that keeps their accounting system up at five nines. I just don't want to have to schmooze the office manager to get me a replacement if I brick it after less than a week. I'll let the new wear off a little first.
Brick a Fascinate? Don't think its Possible, I have done just about every stupid thing you can think of to mine, including flashing Darky's 9.3 rom for the I9000 on it by accident. As long as I can get it into DL mode, odin or heimdall can fix my stupidity.

[Q] MacRom MR8 market/app issues

First off I want to say that MacRom is the most stable/speedy ROM I've used so far (thanks for all the hard work!).
Just a couple issues with the new MR8 update:
1. The new market seems to be really slow? (maybe just due to the older Eris' lack of speed?)
2. I don't know if this is a market related issue or not, but I can't install a couple apps I use. The market doesn't give me an option to even download them: Words with Friends and Google Books. I'm not sure if it's related to the new market or if the apps are somehow incompatible with the new MR8 update?
3. Is there a way to get rid of the blue line that appears whenever you tap the screen to make a selection? I've been searching but have yet to find a way. The line just kind of annoys me, personally.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I love this ROM! Thanks!
Dude the same thing has been happening the past two days for me on Deadly and Spicy ROMs. For instance I had not been able to get Titanium but I got my Pro key fine, and same thing with XDA, regular worked fine but couldn't download premium. I took a nap earlier and woke up and had premium I'm about to check Titanium so it may be a Market issue.
Sent from my Spicy Eris GB using XDA Premium App
Good to know. Hopefully it's just a market issue then, but still no luck for me...
same here
i too am wondering why i can't download certain apps from the market, like facebook for example. it's not already installed and i get no download button for that app in the market...but i get download button for most other apps.
also wondering about how to get rid of blue bar on menu selections.

I've seen the same issues with MR8 and MR9... I'm looking into the issue, but haven't found a work-around yet. I'm thinking it may possibly be a result of the build revision bump to 2.3.5 that might be throwing the market off (showing the phone as incompatible with your device), but it's only a theory, no fact to that yet...
Glad to know I'm not the only one as I have been having trouble downloading my premium apps too. I flashed 2.3.5 yesterday. I'm a noob so I was wondering what I Fk'd up... LOL!

[Q] Question About Verizon Samsung Fascinate

Hi guys..
Sorry for wasting your time again..
Got a few question, jsut flashed my phone to gingerbread stock verizon..
I would actually want to ask what can i do to my phone after i root it?. i mean what will be the changes, cause i really can't understand the advantages of being rooted. they said there will be more options.
but what are those option?.. you mean i can download more apps in android market?.. am i right?..
also i have a question about the place where can we download full version apps games, i was informed about blackmart.. is that safe?..
also about the droidwall, someone told me if i rooted my phone, i can get that, and it seems to be very usefull to what she said..
Thankyou for responding to my question.
appreciate it so much..
also wants to confirm if verizon fascinate really doesn't have front camera cause im having hard time using the yahoo messenger video call only black screen
More Power Guys!!!
Rooting gives you the ability to modify your file systems, install custom roms, as well as apps that could not normally be installed on your phone. There is no front facing camera on your phone. You really need to ditch the gingerbread you ate using noe and follow the guide to get any of the android 4.0 roms that are on the site. You will understand why rooting is so nice when you are able to use one of those roms. You can install droidwall once you are rooted. If you are looking for free apps on the internet other than the play market, try using Google, it really works.

Rooting will allow you to do more to and with your phone than was intended. First and foremost for me it was being able to remove Verizon bloatware. You can install Custom Roms either Gingerbread or ICS, make tweaks to the phone that will make it run more effective and efficient. Either way, if you are going to root, the next thing you should learn about is making a Nandroid backup. This way you can always go back to where you were when you first started and then do it all over again to your liking. Have fun.
I too wanted to get rid of the bloatware. By putting on a ROM like Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4) on my phone I don't feel the need to upgrade. The developer activity is very good on this phone so the performance of the roms is great.

I try to download apps from the Play Store, but all I get is an error message saying Error retrieving information from server [RPC:S-7:AEC-0 QYKQ-6R63K]
Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm using stock 2.3.4 Android.

I believe it's google account related, I think there is an issue with your account and that device, but it is likely temporary and little you can do about.
One option is open a new account and see if that works, does not help if you have paid apps on the first account.
Another option is try a different internet source, like a friends wifi or a cafe that has free wifi
Is this device new to you?
also could try rebooting device, factory reset, reflash firmware with RSD Lite...

Hey there Shadow, I hope you see this. You and your files have been a huge help to me. My S3's screen digitizer failed, and after taking it apart and restoring the original files with odin/heimdall I've decided to use an x2 I bought for $20 bucks about 4 years ago mainly for the sd card and to use it for a remote control/music player.
Since I have to now use it for a phone, I've tried multiple rom's again. Trying to find the best combination of updated android/features and speed/functionality. I've used everything as of late, except eclipse because I've had trouble getting the 2.3.5 update to take, and the rom itself to take after the update. That's a topic for another day, I've used eclipse before but not lately.
Here's my question, sorry for the delay in getting to it. I've installed the JB version of AOKP. AOKP build 6 I think it is. I was going to apply the 2.46 su zip before rebooting but forgot. I did install the ReRecovery zip for cm7 but can't get back into recovery at all. I've done the battery pull, and plug into a charge to no avail. It simply goes into charge mode. I have the hijack boot zip on my sd but can't copy it to system/etc (I think that's where it goes), so I can't get into recovery that way. I believe if I could get my phone rooted, I could get it to go into recovery via the hijack boot zip.
Do you know a way I could get it rooted? I'm about to try a script from the EzSBF That I've extracted and put in my Download folder in Linux. I usually just run the sbf script from Linux when I want to sbf instead of booting a live linux cd. I have never used adb (I should've learned) because I've never had the need. Is there a way to use adb to push the files needed or to install the su zip? I've also tried installing this zip from the built in recovery to no avail.
Also, I use selectel a MVNO that uses Verizon and regional Verizon compatible CDMA towers. Back when I had my DX, if I had to sbf, sometimes I'd have to re-activate. If I had to re-activate, I'd have to drive 40 minutes away to get to a real verizon tower to activate. As the regional carrier wouldn't never activate via *228. I'm afraid if I SBF, I may have to re-activate. Right now, my ride is broke down, so I can't actually drive the 40 minutes to activate. Any other time I'd SBF and be done with it. But not this time. Again, if I can get root on this rom, I'm certain the hijack zip will let me get to cwm. I used the Hijack zip when I was on CM10 A3 but that rom was a bit too slow for me. I went back to CM7 which is faster, and everything works, but a lot of apps require 4.0 or greater to function. One example is Zen Pinball, not necessary but I did pay for a table. There are countless other examples. And I can almost never get the play store to function correctly on CM7 without erroring out. When this happens I uninstall the play store, and sometimes google play services and just use the old market app to search for what I want to install. Are there any root apps you can think of that might work? Or scripts? Or do you know whether or not I'll have to re-activate if I SBF?
Thanks for any input.

most roms will not work well on 2.3.5/1.3.418 except eclipse 2.3
downgrade to 2.3.4/1.3.380 if you want anything other than eclipse
don't do updates, just flash with rsd lite or ezSBF
stock recovery is really only good for factory reset
eclipse and cm7 are the only to rom I would try
I don't remember anything about root and AOKP
I can't say for sure about SBF and reactivation, but likely it will be required unless you have a nandroid backup made in a custom recovery
Thanks, I did the sbf and was still activated, so after tapping the four corners I was fine. I wish I had made a nandroid and backed up all the partitions before installing CM7 again. But I didn't.
Do you know of any active threads here where people are still using GB? On CM7 after the play store updates along with play services, the play store no longer works. And play services uses a lot of juice. I've found some alternatives to play services on here which may be a viable alternative, but to get anything from the play store, I have to uninstall or freeze play services, and roll back play store to the stock market. I can use play store version 4.0??? and it works okay but soon updates to 5.8.8 which crashes everytime I open it, and sometimes randomly.

.
I did try wiping playstore data, and tried various versions of the play store. I tried wiping and uninstalling play services, which we need for the most part for some apps to work. I'd forgot about the destroy market links option.
The actual answer is here in the hide section, I haven't figured out or rather took the time I guess to make these posts that pretty
BUT... guess what the problem was with the play store not working all along... I never would have thought about it and only discovered it by accident. It turns out that I was using an old theme for GB that I had used since the days of my DX. The Mixer series by MrDSL. I've always loved his themes. Of course everyone has their own taste, but cherry mixer is what really did it for me I've always loved that theme, and always used it on CM7. As soon as I changed themes from the mixer series to Eyecandy or almost any other theme, the Play store started working again.
Thanks very much for you help and for your awesome documents and links on google docs and your collection of files. I can't tell you how many times I've referenced your material. I mean a lot. Sometimes it's much easier to look through your documents than to search through a thread on XDA. or Droidxforums, or anywhere, Rootz seems to be spamed to death.
So I just want give you a huge thank you for all your resources. I found a ton of stuff for the DX and CM7 in general that you can't get because of dead links now. If you want any of it for your collection let me know.
While CM7 runs great, many apps are few and far between. I can't get videos from Youtube to play now. And I have to freeze Youtube anyway to get rid of that pesky sync icon. Seems like I remember another fix for that sync icon but can't remember where, I do know that freezing or uninstalling YouTube fixes it.
I sbf'd again, and again, I didn't have to re-activate. In my opinion just luck again. I've been reading about CM10 and CM9 a lot lately for the DX2 but I can't figure out why the last time I was on CM10 that my DX2 was so painfully slow. This is compared to Kitkat on the DX which should have been slower. Maybe it's because of the lack of support from Nvidia. I'm going to keep reading, but I know I won't get the stability or battery life I do with CM7. At the same time, I'm missing out on so many apps. So, I'm going to keep reading about CM10 A3 which is supposed to be far more stable than CM9, but I've read through posts where people used both as their dailly drivers. The last time I used CM10 A3, the dialer really worked poorly too. And I couldn't get the torch to work in quick settings. No disrespect to DKZ (Dragon Killerz I thnk his name is) without whom I probably wouldn't even have these two choices.
I know you said to run either Eclipse (I downloaded your Eclipse 2.3 nanadroid), but it'd have to be themed. Maybe I could use an xposed module or the Ultimate Online Kitchen. because the links for the Eclipse themes are dead now. I do have the Titanium theme but it's for Eclipse 2.1. There may not be a huge difference, but I'm betting the difference is there which is probably why although it worked, Eclipse didn't run as it should have.
If you have any advice, on CM9 or CM10 please let me know. Or even MIUI based on CM9, I've read good things about it too. but being based on CM9, it'll have the same bugs. Or should have. Some have reported that somethings worked better in MIUI based on CM9 vs CM9 itself. I'm sure I probably just need to stick with CM7, as it was running very well, except that I couldn't watch a youtube video, usually the error given was that "This video could not be played, click to try again" or similar. I've tried removing Youtube, and installing and trying different video players to no avail, as well as, installing different browsers. Again, to no avail.
Thanks again, and if you want APEX with some themes to add to you DX collection or anything let me know. I'm going to be cleaning the drive with those items on there soon and I'll try to make you a list of what I have for the DX. I didn't though away much. I did get rid of some old CM builds for the DX since we have Pooka's CM and the boot menu. I used to run either that or WizardOO's MIUI with his bootmenu.. Personally, I always thought that bootmenu he developed was the bee's knee's. (I'd better not say I thought it was the Shee IT.) I'm sure there are youngin's who read these boards too. And I shouldn't use foul language even though to me they're just words. LIke any other words in the dictionary. They've just acquired a bad connotation through the years kinda like how in Europe, nudity isn't such a big deal, Even in public baths, both men and women used those together. Sorry I got off topic..
Thanks again for your hard work in assembling your collection of lnks and documents. I have to wonder though why you don't include Molten or MIUI in your DX2 listings.
Thanks one more time Shadow....
griz
Now that I've thought about it, maybe the reason youtube isn't playing in CM7 is due to the theme I'm using, but I doubt it.

Advice on how to proceed

Hi all,
I have an old HTC One E8 (OPAJ5) with Android 6.0.1 on it. It is currently rooted (I believe through HTCs website and instructions). This phone is no longer on a cell plan, but I would like to give it new life for playing music, using whatsapp, etc...
My question is what is the best way to go about this? It has been reset, but google play and a few other apps crash constantly. There are also a bunch of Sprint apps that could go away. I am not past using a different rom, but I am way out of practice on that. If anybody could be so kind as to offer any advice I will take a look and see if I can get it done.
Thanks in advance
