Why Gingerbread? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I´ve just bought a Vibrant Galaxy S and I was thinking in updating it to gingerbread. First I thought there was an official release since most of the galaxy s have gingerbread now but to my surprise no gb for Vibrant. After reading this forum I have come to no conclusion whether I should update to 2.3.4 by using CyanogenMOD because if I read it correct it seems:
1) that Cya 7 drains battery faster than samsung stock 2.2 rom.
2) Also, it seems that all the samsung stock apps doesn´t come with Cya7. What app does it comes with for SMS, dialing, etc?
3) Why can´t you use roms from Samfirmware.com, there´s a I9000BVJJW4 2.3.3 there, is it incompatible with Vibrant?
4) What about the Dark Rom which also features 2.3.4, what´s the main difference from cyanogen? does it comes with touchwiz?
Thank you guys.

1- yes it does. thats the catch that comes with speed and performance.
2- Yes, it comes with SMS, dialing etc. IT doesn't come with the samsung music player, but the default one that google made. You will have to flash GAPPS after CM7 to get the Market, and the other stufff.
3-I9000 is another phone. We are T959
4- i cant answer that because idk

get the revamped miui it saved this phone I was going to ditch ditch my vibrant the I discovered it along with bali kernel WAY better battery life then when I was I 2.2 rom I can't even remember which rom I was on before miui
Sent from my T959 using XDA Premium App

Well I would say use TW roms mix between speed an battery aan HW browser is nice once it gets better kernel then it will be better but if u want straight battery froyo CM7 is stock so no TW its just raw speed only thing bad is that browser sucks without HW
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App

So revamped miui will give me better battery life than froyo? is it touchwiz? any bugs (I will use GPS)?

Why gingerbread?? Its .1 more.
Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.

Its the same reason we were clammoring for froyo from eclair, but aside from that its the latest and greatest software, i will say that CM based roms are by far the smoothest my phone has ever been and if you are truly worried about battery life read up on the kernels you can add like bali and glitch then undervolt and you can get pretty good battery life or atleast comparable to stock. I personally get about 14-20 hours depending on my usage in a day. Typical day consists of several 100 texts 2-3 20-30 minute phone calls, maybe total 1 hour browsing and other miscellaneous use.

[Q] Most stable Froyo Rom?

I've been reading through this for a while and can't seem to find any info on this, of course...it could be due to lack of sleep, but who's counting the hours??
SO...Which of the Froyo Roms out there are the Best/working as far as features go? Running 2.1 Update 1 on mine currently...With xRecovery installed.
I like renderio2005 rom with a gingerbread theme. I had very little problems with it.
But like gingerbread better. Just an opinion

Right - But isn't there still a couple issues with things working on the Gingerbread roms for this phone?
I'm using Wolfbreak's CM 6.1.3 V4.3 [06-03-11] [Tweaked+Theme+Extras]. For me, its very very stable. Didn't give me any problems until now.
Renderios rom is 2.2. If u were wondering

Me too, seems to run good and has good features
Z's Free X10 Beta 4 is probably the most popular and very stable. Other than the camera app and no camcorder, I did not have any problems.

+1 except for the camera (known issue with all froyo's as far as I can tell).
So is the gingerbread ROM thats out there just as stable as the froyo roms? And are you guys flashing these over with xRecovery?
Wolfbreak's CM 6.1.3 V4.3 is very stable, fast and highly recommended
I use the native camera with no issues and use Vignette if I need to use the camera flash.
I also use the version of Videocam Illusion in the link below for video recording which has been tweaked by the developer to run on our Froyo based X10 roms. The quality isn't great but it's better than not having any video recording facility:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=984925
Lmao you can tell what I'm using by my sig
Yeah I love this ROM, especially with all the added customization you can do through the CyanogenMod Settings Menu, such as change LED colors and easily change themes, it makes it a great ROM :]
Camera works and to take video, you have to use Videocam Illusions with only records in 640x480. But I can deal with that.
question, anyone notice X10's battery drain a lot faster with Froyo roms?
in comparison to stock 2.1 rom

Yeah I've kinda noticed this as well. I suppose its kinda understandable since the froyo roms run a hair faster you know?
-----
From X10 XDA App on Wolfbreak's CM6.1v4 Froyo 2.2.1
No battery drain on Free X10 Beta 4, for me anyway. I'd say the same or even slightly better.
Im pretty sure that I'm running the Generic 2.1 Update 1 on mine now, The only issue I've got is I'm picking up 4G Speeds throughout Colorado (except up here in the hills) and I'd be more concerned with loosing that when going to one of the custom ROM's...
Could just be me, But this phone SCREAMS when you get that lovely little "H" on the signal bar! Dunno - Maybe I'll try it since I backed up my stock ROM yesterday with xRecovery...We'll just have to see, but it sounds like Wolfbreaks ROM is the best one out there next to the Free Beta4 one...
Thanks for all the input
I use CyanogenMod-6.1.1-v03 and have done for several weeks now, its really stable with a few issues, like the camera (common problem for most roms) and bluetooth sometimes acts a little weird when I try to pair it with my MW600 headset.
Battery drainage is normal, but I use a extended battery with 2600mAh instead of original, so its hard for me to compare.

You still get HSPA. If you think your phone flies now, wait until you try 2.2. We would not be on it if it was slower. Speed is basically what you are getting by giving up a fully functional camera and other customizations.
I switch between FreeX10 beta4 and rendeiro's cm6.1.3 and would say they're both pretty stable. I don't have a problem with either one for daily use. I switch back to modded 2.1s for camera and camcorder.

I like the Infusion ROM because it looks good and is fast as hell. Haven't used it long enough to evaluate the battery life, but so far it's looking pretty good.

I am using latest cognition
Works fast and reliable aklso kernel supports overclocking.
Battery consumption is good also.but this is 2.3.4 specific i thing, valid for most of the 2.3.4 roms.
In my view be better to wait for Samsung to actually release 2.3.4 rather than work of a leaked test rom .

I was thinking the same thing myself, but the ROMs using 2.3.4 are getting some good reviews. It's certainly tempting!
Likewise but just to many errors reported for me . Many from newb installs but as current rom is excellent and i want full 2.3.4 firmware flash on a clean phone before flashing custom i am trying hard to wait .

Same here mate. I think I'm just getting itchy fingers, coming from a HD2 where I was deciding on my next ROM whilst flashing one!
Im using Lite'ning with 2.1 (with 2.3.4) and it sounds the best to me. Fast and stable.
I'm using VR2.0 at the moment and getting 1% battery drain per hour with WiFi on and push email. Everything else is manually syncronised. Insane, and I doubt it will stay this way. On VR1.4 I had 28 hours before the battery died.
Not easy to answer... lots of roms with much difference.... just read some roms 3d and find your own street....

All ROMs are nothing but skins and simple tweaks. They are all the same. Until CM7 or MIUI finals are released, we probably won't get a real alternative to stock.
There's not a difference in UI, I agree. But my battery definitely lasts longer
To me, other than battery consumption, there seems nothing that could tempt me to move from stock....having had SGS 1 for quite sometime and been a flash addict, I think Samsung has done remarkably well for SGS2...its pretty much tweaked/optimized already, no lags...nothing actually warrants a custom ROM...but then who am I kidding...might as well sail on the custom ROM one day.
Atm i'm using Ficeto's 2.3.4 version, working fine but i'm thinkking on changing to Infusion 1.6 when the upload will be done
Litening 2.1 is best by far out of all the 2.3.4 ROMS I've tried out.

ROM Suggestions Needed

My wife uses a Samsung Vibrant and there are just so many issues with it. Currently, it's on the latest stock Froyo release. It keeps losing all of her home screen icons (using stock TWLaucher) and we have to kill TWLauncher or reboot to get them back. Seems to have lag all over the place. Also, wifi signal strength is poor. The wifi calling app constantly turns off saying the wifi signal isn't good enough.
I'd like be interested in trying out a custom ROM. I've tinkered with some of the leaked ROMs, so I'm familiar with ODIN. I've used CWM on my Droid X before, so I should be ok with that as well.
She's not interested in 100 different themes and fancy icons and fancy features, etc. We are just going to want something that's close to stock with some tweaks that might fix some of the issues we are having. Not interested in partially working ROMs where the GPS doesn't work or issues with the camera, etc. Would like wifi calling to work as well. Need something totally stable. I'm not going to want something that's going to need updating weekly either.
Anything out there that meets what I'm looking for?
Please make suggestions.
Hi, same situation here, my gf has stock vibrant with froyo and many issues...
I've cm7 on my N1 so I considered it for the vibrant but at the moment it have troubles with gps and wifi SO I've searched a lot and the much more stable rom (for me of course) is the projectV, it's based on the official froyo with some tweaks and fixes, seems pretty stable until now

hope u enjoy it

I actually had my eye on that one.
It'll improve the lag and losing icons and things like that? I don't need a lagfix on top of that as well?
I'm not doing this for the eye candy (extra lock screens, etc.), I just want things to run more smoothly.
This probably won't help the low wifi signal though, since it's using the same modem as stock froyo, right?
Anyone else want to chime in?
It'll definently improve Lag and that icon problem that you have will not happen. And almost every ROM in here has a Lagfix, so Project-V does have one and will come on when you flash it. (A voice of a robotic women after flashing means that Voodoo is flashing) Voodoo is the name of the Lagfix, which makes our systems run on ext4 instead of the slow RFS system stock that your wife had.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
The best thing about Project-V ROM is that its made to be fast and for tweaking, that's why they say they're not competing with Cyanogenmod because it also has both speed and tweaking abilities. So don't worry if you think Project-V is all eye candy, because its both Speed, Stability, and Tweaks!
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
If anything, I'll probably give this Project V a shot then. My wife will kill me if I F up her phone or cause her to lose stuff.
I flash this with CWM? I don't exactly recall where to get CWM or how to use it, but I'm sure I'll figure that out.
Installing this over stock will be a total data wipe, right? I should back up programs and program data with Titanium first and then restore after?
This does include the lagfix/file conversion? That just happens automatically when I flash this?
Everything works? No serious bugs? I can also flash that wifi calling file in the first post using cwm and then I'll have wifi calling too?
Let's say Samsung releases a 2.3 that's a solid ROM and I want to go back to stock. With this applied and whatever lagfix, file conversion that's been done, how hard would it be to get back to stock?
Anything else I should know?
I've rooted the stock froyo, backupped ALL with titanium and then wiped all from cwm and installed projectV, no problem at all but titanium is required
About gingerbread.... do you remeber the "froyo story" right? I think I seat and wait for the gingerbread version of projectV (or other roms based on official release)! No more stock images in my home please

Yes, wouldn't be surprised at all if there's never an official 2.3 for this. Their 2.2 release was many months behind competing phones originally released around the same time. Still, just want to make sure I understand what I'm getting into here and how hard it would be to get back out. Could I easily get back to the stock froyo that it's on now, if I need to?
I've never did it , but I think u have to odin back to 2.1 stock and then ota (or keys) to 2.2 or whatever

Does the new market that came out this week work fine on this phone?
Before this market, I also had terrible problems updating apps. It was brutally slow and update all usually failed on most apps. I was very surprised that after installing the new market, I was able to do an update all on 20 apps with no problems at all.
My wife had pretty much given up on updating apps on the stock rom.
not yet tried ! But my gf had no problem at all with old and oldest market under tmob, now she's back in Italy, so I've unlocked the sim and still have no issues!
try a few different 1's and see which you like best
I like the bionix 1.3.1 with bali 1.8.7 uv kernel.
i'm not sure about the wifi calling as I dont use that feature.
Tried the new market right now, no proplems as always!

ROMS
As far as which rom you choose is your choice, I am running Toxic Smoke and a lot of people will agree its super quick and responsive but I support almost all roms, Devs here do great work on the vibrant and all should be recognized for it. I may have a solve for your low WiFi signal though..... Have you looked in to the Hardware GPS fix? It involves you opening up your phone and bending a small piece of copper, I did so and put a tiny sliver of credit card plastic under it to keep it from bending back down and now my GPS signal is ridiculous as compared to before. But as I read more there is another copper pin on the opposite side of the phone, that is your WIFI antenna. I then took my phone apart again and did the same thing to that pin and now My WIfI gets great signal. I guess it all depends on how tech savoy you are and how much you want to get into your phone. I know for how much it cost and how much I use my phone I wanted it working 100% so I took the extra time to do all of this and Im quite happy with my Vibrant now. But anyway my specs on my phone are,
ROM: ToxicMusixSmoke
Launcher: Golauncher Pro EX (Which is freaking awesome and free)
Kernal: Bali X (Will increase the responsiveness of your phone ff Overclocked to 1.2 using setCPU, you can download for free on XDA, cost 2.99 or something on the market, the dev offers it for free on here)
+ Hardware GPS Fix and S.gps.zip file for the drivers (You can also find this fine on the Hardware GPS fix post)
I hope this helps as my phone is very stable and I am totally satisfied with my phone as I was not so much at first. I also think with Golauncher you can get stock themes so your phone will look and act just like stock, but run 10000000000000 times better!
I am new to the samsung t959
Any recommendation for ROM? I would like to be as fast as possible, and with a working GPS
I don't mind CM7 as long as it is fastest.
Thanks a million!
]I wasn't looking for fastest.
Just need something to eliminate done of this issues we've had with stock and to be stable with everything functioning correctly.
Project V seems to have done that.
Only issue, so far, is that bloater isn't working and I can't figure a way to get the samsung stock keyboard back. Can anyone help with that?
I like that this rom is so close to stock. If I didn't tell my wife, she wouldn't have even known I changed anything.
While I no longer use it myself, I found Zendroid 2.0.1 with Bali Kernel to be the simplest and easiest to use for a layman, like the average wife or girlfriend
It's extremely lightweight with no bloat to speak of, and battery life is phenomenal (no bloat, no 2g/3g bleeding).
@lexluthor you can use root explorer our similar app to copy the apk to the system/app folder.

Hello guys, can you guys tell me by experience what is the best Gingerbread ROM out there like from 2.3.4 and up? I will like to be up to date. Currently Im testing in love of the Crisis Rom with the Sensation theme but is giving me soft reboots very often.
Im looking for a gingerbread rom that i can customize it with my custom themes..

Noobie question regarding CM 7
Hi,
I had a quick question regarding Cyanogen 7. I did try parsing through the threads but I'm hoping to get a few questions answered which didn't already find. I just rooted my phone and I'm planning on installing Cyanogen 7. However, before I do, I just wanted to clarify a few things.
1)GPS-I'm told this is fixed but still somewhat buggy. The current froyo stock ROM GPS really isn't all that reliable but it does work. If Cyanogenrom is equal to that, I'll be fine. However, if it's worse, that's a concern for for me. Can anyone give me an answer as to how it compares to the GPS on stock froyo.
2) I currently have most of my apps loaded on SD Card since I have the stock froyo. Will I have to reformat the card after the Cyanogen install or does it even matter?
3) Does the 3 button combo into recovery mode still work? If not, what are my other options?
4)Is Video playback still choppy in certain formats.
5) I've seen some youtube videos where people have installed the Voodoo kernel with Cyanogen and they've eliminated practically all lag issues. Does Cyanogenmod on the Vibrant have any frequent lag issues where the voodoo kernel is necessary?
Again, I apologize if my questions have been addressed before but if someone would be kind enough to help me, I would be grateful.

The only problem with this rom, is that every reboot you have to connect to data which is a technical inconvenience feature unlike the other roms. That rom is not as intuitive like the others. Once you get past that snafu, it does look nice and responds fair. Still has the cm7 / miui bugs and GPS is so so with other 2.3 roms.

Custom ROM 2.3 for Samsung Vibrant (SGH-T959)

I have a friend who owns a Samsung Vibrant (SGH-T959). He is the Galaxy S, but made for T-Mobile.
I thought CyanogenMod 2.3.7 ROM for Galaxy S, but they are not for this version SGH-T959.

Both CM7 and MIUI are based on 2.3.7. And they are both supported on the Samsung Vibrant.

MIUI: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123922
Take a look in the development section of the Vibrant forum to find out more information.
I don't think any of them are good enough for a daily driver. I put CM7 on mine and took it off in the same day. The battery life was terrible and the GPS was flakey if it worked.
I think the 2.3 based ROMs will never be as stable as the 2.2 based ones because Samsung never released a 2.3 update for the Vibrant. There is something missing that is needed in the drivers to make things work right.
Very good it !!!!!!
.
Does this "Vibrant" is the SGH-959?
Someone who has the SGH-959 uses this ROM? It is working great?
Hug,

Asgard 3.2 is pretty stable for a daily driver, but 2.2 roms are the best for stability

That's a BS statement if I've ever heard one!!!
Cm7 and Miui are exceptionally stable and make very good daily drivers...I've played with both and love Miui......very stable, everything works, and its extremely fast.
As far as GPS goes that's a phone thing....some phones GPS works better than others.
And battery.....well that depends on the user...I don't buy the fact that people get 2-4 days on a full charge unless they just don't do **** on their vibrants, personally I've never gotten good battery life on mine.....but I'm on my phone almost 24/7....that's why I have 3 batteries and an external charger and you will never see me crying and *****ing about battery life

As for battery life, I am not expecting multiple days, but on Froyo, I can listen to music all day at work and come home to charge it. With CM7, I had to charge in the middle of the day. I wasn't doing anything different, but there was less battery left after the same amount of time.

Thanks but does it have gingerbread theme? Because I want a rom that is specially made for gingerbread theme and I'm running Android 2.2 with Samsung vibrant. Tell me the stablest one and less bugest one. Thank you very much.

Umm miui is 2.3.7 it is what you make it as far as themes...what you don't seem to understand is miui is 100% user themeable.
You don't have to wait for someone to make a theme for you,its totally customizable ....you theme every aspect to your liking
Im using miui 2.3.7 nb version as a daily driver. it's smooth and stable

im running on miui 2.3.7, really smooth and stable, plus fully customisable themes
Thats true i have used MIUI for a while and it is very stable and also CM7 as well. Battery life ALWAYS depends on the user and not on the phone or ROM. I have wasted all my battery in 4 hours if i really use it alot and when i dont it has lasted me over 16 hours and that doesnt have to depend on the ROM because its been the same for any rom that i use.
