EVO 3D more stable with root and s-off!? - HTC EVO 3D

I first noticed this when the temp root was out that my stuck asleep issues, camera lockups, and other random bugs pretty well disappeared. With the first temp root I ran it over 9 days without a reboot and had zero problems. In fact the first issue was leaving 4G turned on and letting it go to sleep. Caused a reboot and I had to temp root all over again. That lasted till Monday this week when I used the Revolutionary to s-off and root. Since then I have had no real issues. I'm hoping that someone else has noticed this. I personally think that the security in the locked bootloader somehow caused some of the issues?

I say your full of **** LOL. I didn't have issues at all prior to s off

Unless you have done. Tweets s off doesn't give those result maybe your phone just "got used to it "

Well I know one thing for sure....after s-off and root my data is really slow..... Is anyone else experiencing this or no? I see there are some different radios in the dev section, has anyone experienced this and then flashed to another radio?

Well something did. Unless the system just went to crap afterward. I'm not sure if I always had radio .530 or not, but I do now. Maybe that is it?

yeah, you need to have Sprint reprovision your line. You can try doing the hands free activation a few times, some report this works fine, but if you call sprint (or chat) and have them do a "data reset" it works every time and takes 5 minutes....it happened to me.
Also the newest radio sucks more than stock. I have had awesome results with the pre-release leaked radio. Same signal strength but killer data speeds (I actually saw 2.7mbps for the first time on sprint ever...on 3G), your results may vary.

I could never get wifi tethering to work on temp root. The it works fine on perm root

Me too I can no longer use the YouTube app unless I turn on Wifi and use my Fios. The 3G and 4G show signal, but the Youtube player won't play. I think the rooting through the radio did this because YouTube worked fine before. I'm still on the stock ROM, just S-OFF and rooted. Also, I did NOT get the error 16 after S-OFF and rooting, and was able to make and receive calls, and browse the internet. Speed test on 4G is 5 Mbps down and only .6 Mbps upload, 3G is 1.4 Mbps and .5 Mbps, and my Fios wifi piggyback is 19Mbps and 13Mbps, sorry Fios rocks!

Yup. Started a thread on this earlier. Ended up having to get a replacement. Even unrooting didn't fix it.

It's normal for custom roms to knock out bugs in stock software. This is not, I repeat this not a huge discovery.

Yeah, I know that from flashing hundreds of roms. My original point was that I noticed that even with temp root it seemed more stable, as if the process somehow fixed something.

U are correct but s-off allows users to make radio, pri, and other data provisioning changes that when not understood thoroughly how one depends on another and how also it can be kernel specific, causes lots of problems down the road.

I disagree. Data speeds went to $hit for myself and others after root...

I'm just going to say this as a bottom line
ROOTING AND ACHIEVING S OFF DOES NOT CHANGE ANY ROM/SOFTWARE THIS MEANS IT CAN HAVE NO EFFECT ON USER EXPERIENCE TIL SOMETHING WITHIN ANDROID IS MODIFIED.
Thanks.

Is the phone S-OFF?
How much access do you have to that phone if it is?
Nope S-ON. But I have unrestricted access for the next 30days
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
I may be wrong here (I assure you someone will chime in if I am ), but at this point we may need to keep a look out for any S-OFF Phones as these have the best chance of having a SD Card we can take an image from. If I'm correct in my thinking, this alone wont help us as the individual card should be tied to that phone. Unrestricted access to such a phone would allow it to be studied at the very least.
Anyone know of any CID spoofers for mSD cards?
Well we have more than one. I'll check them all out and get back

Right. Only the OTA won't download on mine. I have a 30mbit connection for my wifi and Angry Birds downloads in seconds, but took the OTA 7 hours to get 3.5mb.
All of ours have S-ON RL...
Any idea what rl is?
Also if you can't download it OTA, I would assume renaming it to update.zip would work.

For some reason the Wi-fi on mine is screwy. 50mb connection from comcast and the router is right next tomine, same as my non 3d evo was on and I couldn't download a few games that needed to install data, would sit there and after about 3 minutes would say no internet connection....
It seems to work for apps and such in the market so I don't know. Just trying to provide as much info as I can. Just got it today too. Kind of buggy.
At one point would wake to lock screen and as soon as I pulled ring it went black, several times, not sure what made it work again.
Also, hit top button showed lock screen as only top half of screen. Had to reboot for this to clear....
I also know someone at the sprint store in my location and could ask him to look for a phone of that nature if we need it. Let me know.
i think the build number is old 1.11.651.3 i have 1.13.651.7

Then one might be able to find a chink in HTC's armor. For example, running fastboot/adb commands etc and comparing the output to normal phones. The missing functions between s-off and s-on would be significant.

I installed this 'renaming it to PG86IMG.zip' and now everything is kool except my wifi errors out. Doesn't even try to start...just gives me "error" when I try to start it.
I read in a few places that I need to use Goldcard to use OTA....any ideas if this is true or if I need to do something else??
BTW, I now have Hboot 1.40.00...instead of 1.30.00 so it won't even let me downgrade to factory shipping ROM.

OTA Update Question

I still have not accepted any ota's. Should I update? And will I still be able to temp root? Reason I'm wondering to update is because when i talk to other people they have trouble hearing me and they say I sound muffled, and was wondering if i update it will fix that issue. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure about that specific issue, but the OTA has done nothing but help I believe. It significantly boosted my battery life and doesn't close any root holes so nothing negative to worry about.
Same here. I still have root and various fixes were made with the update. But most devs still say not to update. But since HTC will be unlocking the boot loader I said what the hell and just did the updates.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
All of the developers reccomend not accepting the OTA's. However it's your phone, so do as you need too. Just keep in mind that once you update you cannot revert back.
Well, it could complicate attaining root so I simply will not accept an OTA...but with an unlocked bootloader once custom roms come out I won't give a crap about a stock rooted rom...so...given the great things I've heard about these updates I would like to accept them...but I have years of conditioning telling me not to. So I won't. I recommend nobody else does either, but, as previously mentioned--It is your phone.

Your S-OFF Results

Just wanted to know how you guys fared with the recent S-OFF process. Just a quick and easy poll to see the results of the process, and to help determine the level of risk involved in going through this process.
I haven't yet done the S-OFF process, but do plan on it in the near future.
Success! no issues, guides were written for noobs to follow.
No issue here although revolutionary stuck at downloading recovery but cancelled out and.flash twrp no problem.

Got everything done in under 10 minutes. Process ran smooth and nothing really unexpected. The only snag I had was installing the superuser apk from the market, but I just used the fixed version I got on here and everything runs good now.
BTW...just restored my angry birds data using Titanium Backup. All those hours playing weren't wasted afterall!
I didn't have any issues but I do have a question, when I run ADB Shell from the command line I get $ instead of #, is there something I forgot to do or is this the normal state of this root method at this point? Root apps work, CWM recovery is installed, Superuser app is installed, can't seem to access anything or do much from the command line.

Considering the HTC unlock method has been released since roughly August and we find ourselves now in January with essentially 5 months have passed without an unofficial root method .. I would probably lean towards not counting on an unofficial root method.
Haven't seen any new information from Unrevoked or AlphaRevX regarding work on the EVO 3D as I'm sure there are some devices in existence which don't have any unlock method that might garner more attention ...
Most of that is just opinion and speculation based on personal experience. Might not be worth anything but figured I'd post an answer in the hope it might help! Good luck!
I know the only way now is the HTC method im holding out alil longer till someone comes out with a better method. I don't really want HTC knowing im rooted with the way they have it set up. Nothing is wrong going there route with it other then you warranty with them being void to a certain point.

Even with having the 1.5 hboot, you are still able to flash roms and kernels without issues, just have to do it in a different way.
If your a person that enjoys the challenge (should be the quality of anyone who roots) you'll see past the issues and roll with the punches unrolled an easy way comes along.
Remember people, if your hear, you don't want it the easy way. You don't want to have everything done for you, find joy in getting your hands dirty and doing something challenging.
BTW, yes I have an EVO 3D WITH 1.5 HBOOT and everything is business as usual in the flashing department

took me 10 min after reading the instructions, and more because I don't use Windows (Linux only) so I had to load up my VM for some things. But the unlocking of the Bootstrap and the rooting process is quick.
Yes having S-Off is a huge difference, but just because I don't have it doesn't mean that my life with the phone ends there. I can still flash kernels, ROMs and anything 1.4 hboot could do, I just have to load recovery via fastboot and I'm all set.
Yes, maybe I can't use ROM manager to make my life easy, and maybe to flash I will always be (for now) tied to having to use a computer for better results, but in reality, what?? I have access to a computer most of the time, and if I don't, I wait because or I may be in the field doing training or something else and I don't want to invest my time in flashing at all.
Another way is that if you don't want to use the computer just remove the boot.img from the zip (I believe its that one) file of the ROM your wanting to flash and I believe this should let you flash right from Recovery and then you can access fastboot to flash the Kernel side.

Sometimes i go flash happy and end up with a boot loop situation but all is usually well because i just wipe and restore.

I believe you would have to backup everything except the boot area. You would have to flash the kernel first before restoring the backup.
Note: I haven't tested this, but simple logic says it should work. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

So I checked on my Dad's unrooted, stock, upgraded via ota ICS Sprint Evo3d phone and his data usage was being monitored in settings. So, something is being or was changed on the initial rooted roms that all the other roms are based on.
hey buddy, i had a similar issue after flashing to ICS from GB. i read a ton and found that i needed to go into settings/mobile network/access point names and set up my access points. i am on GSM and found it in one of the threads under the general section or maybe you can look at your dad's and see what the access points are.
hope this works
