[Q] what update is consider safe? - HTC EVO 3D

Which one is safe.....?
Firmware update ?
Profile update ?
Prl update ?
HTC software update?

All updates should be safe. I accepted and have not had any issues with any of the OTA updates since I bought the phone... nor have I had any issues since s-off...

Just to make sure I have a rooted 3VO and all the updates that i mentioned are safe and it will not take away root, Su etc.

Well I'm not sure about the firmware update but I've done profile, PRL, and HTC software update and kept my root

PRL and Profile are generally related to the network (sprint) and network settings. As I understand it, it is generally a good idea (for future HTC and Firmware updates) to let someone else here guinnea pig them before accepting them yourself.... The updates that have thus far been released are ok before and after s-off/perm root.

Thanx guys for the info

New HTC update?

Is anyone else getting notification that there is a new HTC update? It says it is to upgrade to 1.13.651.7. HTC's website has no information on what this update does.
I don't want to haphazardly update to find that it will break root.

The rule has always been, DO NOT UPDATE IF YOU WANT TO KEEP ROOT OR WANT TO HAVE ROOT AT ANY POINT AFTER THAT. If anything was added to fix bugs and add cool stuff, then the devs will add it to their roms and someone will put a rooted version of the update out too if you want it to be sock but keep root.
That's the same version that's been out for weeks

[Q] updates

Hello,
If there are two updates available, for example the 3d games update and the android 4.0 (ics) update. But it's not possible to install any of them 'cause my phone is rooted. Will the phone show me the latest update (ics) or will it show the old one (3d games). So summarized do I have to install all updates to get to the latest one or can I ignore older ones and directly install the latest one?
And my second question is, is there a way to install an official update while using a rooted phone?
And finaly my last question. How do I unroot my evo 3d if I've used revolutionary tool?

What the smart majority of rooted users do is to wait for the updated files to be stripped by developers, so that your phone will not lose root or have sprint spyware installed. This also allows for the radio to be updated without running an RUU. Usually they have it ready within a few days, so unless you are REALLY impatient, or just don't want your phone rooted, then go ahead and install OTA updates.
The exception is the 1.5 hboot, which I was lucky enough to avoid. I THINK you have to unroot (those tools are located in the development stickies) to update.
Almost everything you need is under the development section. It just takes a little searching.

thanks
but u haven't really answered the first question. The problem isn't that i'm not able to update, the problem is that I don't know if there is or if there isn't an update.
btw i'm using a gsm evo 3d not a cdma version
I think you may be confused. You are talking about two different types of updates, app updates and system updates. App updates will always be shown in the market, and the Market should notify you of updates every few days. System (rom) updates are pushed out from your carrier. If you are rooted, you should NEVER take an OTA update. If you are rooted but still on the stock rom, you WILL get notified of the ota updates, just be sure NOT to take it. If you are on a custom rom, you likely wont get notified of the updates.

No i'm not confused. There is an ota update for german gsm evo 3d phones called 3d games. It includes some games, some other tools and also som bugfixes i think. It's not an update of any games in the market it's an ota rom update...
So my question was will it show the latest update or will it show the latest currently NOT INSTALLED update?

Why would your phone show the version of an update that's NOT installed?

[Q] Install ICS OTA Update Rogers

Hey guys, the OTA update from rogers HTC Evo 3D ICS has been released and i would like to up date my phone. The problem is that im running LeeDroid_3D_V5.4 and it doesn't seam to have a software update option in the settings menu.
So my question is, for me to get this update, must i restore my phone back to the original software using the Rogers RUU that i have downloaded?
Thanks, Peter
I am in the same boat here.
Everyone always says when you have root you shouldn't update your phone, just wait a little while and the devs will upload a version that you can flash without losing root.
Well I have yet to see this happen, it has been like a week since the ICS update and all the devs are using a still updating roms with a cluster**** of random leaks and bases.
Can someone just upload the stock rogers ICS rom so I can flash it without losing root and not having to flash back to my stock RUU?
I mean if we have all these versions of the official rom why are you guys still using leaks at all?
Check out Virtuous Shooter, it's pretty close to stock and most of the changes are performance related anyways.
PS A lot of the ROMs aren't using leaks anymore...

From my understanding, to take the OTA, you must relock your phone and then run the RUU. I would just wait until one of the talented devs builds a ROM based on the OTA because it will be much better anyway.
Ok. Thanks a lot everyone for there imput , I am thinking ill just hold out untill a stock Rogers ICS is released rather then do all that work to just have to reroot and probably end up installing another ics Rom over it anyways. I'm thinking this will be by King Cobra Roms as he always dose stock roms, so ill see what he comes up with. I am really looking forward to features in 4.0 and 4.1 . So hopefully they can get there buts in gear , put out a nice Rom, and ill buy them a few coffees and a pizza Thanks again everyone , have a good one !

from what i know this update was to fix issues with the Sprint network( hope i am correct). you could take it before you s-off. You may want to check for software info on the rumrunner thread to check if it can be s-offed with the new software version.

I looked @ rum runner they have verzion and a universal methods. It dosent list sprints support for software version.
So it would use universal after a ota.
Are their any sprint Rome?
Yes you can take the ota update and use the universal version

question updating 3.17.651.5 to OTA 3.17.651.9

Greetings everyone
I acquired an EVO 4G LTE, and it has 3.17.651.5 on it, I was unable to S-OFF with rumrunner but I did root the phone.
Now they are trying to push out 3.17.651.9 from sprint. but I dont want to lose root
What can I do to keep root,. or get the OTA, or how can i patch my phone to this OTA version
if I do the OTA will I lose root like so many other devices ive had, and if so can I gain root easily afterwards without S-OFF as I cannot get S-OFF ?
as this is my only device for internet capability at this time I need to make my choices wisely and informed as I will only have 1 shot at this, and could really use some guidance.
Thanks in advance,
Thariz

The OTA will unroot your phone. There is a newer update of 4.13.651.4 anyway. It has to be manually flashed, but it will get you stock jelly bean. If you want to get S-OFF i suggest following the guide in my sig. It's the most up-to-date guide you'll find, and I think it's rather simple. Hope this helps.

I had dome some research prior to my question, and it seems, and please correct me if I am mistaken, that the google security update in the .9 release is not part of the 4.13.651.4 release, and 4.13.651.4 is likely the last update for this phone EVER.

I don't know about the security update, but that is the last official update for the phone. There are several stable roms that are built from newer versions of android, but all unofficial. I have not personally tried very many of them, but have been very happy with the ones I did flash. I still use this as my primary device.
I am very concerned about the randomly accesible remote vulnerability in android that this patch to .9 addresses. as much as I would like to upgrade to this newer android version you are suggesting, not having random hackers or my malicious ex be able to rootkit my phone is the most important thing
can anyone tell me if I can re-root if i take the OTA, or if this security patch is being incorporated in any other way?

You can re-root your phone the same way as before. The root method is the same on the EVO LTE regardless of the software version. As for the security patch you are referring to, I would think it would be fixed since it was patched in a previous version. I seriously doubt that either Google or HTC went backwards and un-did the patch.

my understanding was the newest release you refer to came out before the exploit was patched, and then promptly pulled from their website, and then the 3.17 ver .9 patch was released, and then thats all that happened and ever will happen......
