its up to you, i basically wanted to do it so i can keep a backup of all my apps. I know there might be ways without root but titanium backup does it so easily and clean. Plus there is others advantages to rooting, blocking ads, removing bloatware, extending the life of your battery. Plus its pretty easy to s-on and go back to stock, following and reading instructions is all it takes. Like i said its up to you how comfortable you feel doing it.
Don't forget sprint now supports rooting as long as you got TEP you are covered. When something goes wrong bring your phone in to your local non corporate dealer.

As alanmv567 mentioned: rooting is helpful for removing unwanted stock apps and performing more thorough backups. I'd recommend it as long as you're comfortable with the process (make sure you read it through a few times before you start).
I plan to root once I read up on how, and make sure it's possible with the Rogers 3VO.
I would love to root my phone but I'm too busy! I'd love to remove all the bloatware htc and Sprint shove down our throats.

I was totally against rooting my phone at first. Initially, I decided to root my phone to get Swype 3.0 (b/c the stock 2.5 suckkkks), but seeing all the feature of custom roms really got me hooked.
You can make your phone more powerful and have better battery life than an unrooted phone. Can't beat that!

Is there any reason to temporary root at this point? I'm generally pretty conservative about rooting things and wait until the dust has settled... but I'm SOOOOO used to my evo 4g being rooted that it's killing me this view ain't rooted...
Then thinking about it, I was trying to think of the advantages of being rooted without any available roms... I can't really think of anything good.
Any ideas? Have you done something good with your temp root?

If you use the built-in Reader app, and highlight text or use other annotation features, this root allows you to retrieve them.
Honestly, I'm in the same boat as you and I have my epic 4g on a custom rom right now. This is important because it gets us almost caught up with the evo 3d. the next hurdle is getting s-on and s-off at will. This will allow for custom roms

Titanium Back Up, Market Enabler...
Titanium backup is my bigest reason. I rooted my EVO 4G and have temp root on my 3vo for the same reason plus wireless tether.

my last device was rooted and I think the only reason I did it was for wireless tether but with my view 4g it's already there so I might not even root unless I find another reason but only time will tell.

What if they can get it to make phone calls? That'd be a great reason to root. And if they ever do achieve that feat, I will promptly head over to my local Sprint store and pick one up.

I already use sipdroid and my google voice number so I have phone capabilities in a sense. So far still no good reason for me to root.
OK so this is like the 6th time I've rooted my device, after reading many threads / websites, etc, all saying how 'amazing' root is. Well, I'm still disappointed.
Is there anything good to use for root users?
OK theres titanium backup, but that's useless - to me - as bloatware doesn't bother me and I don't **** around with my device.
Granted, GameCih2 is good, but it rips the fun out of games after a while.
I can't seem to find any other root apps that make me think 'Damn, I'm glad I rooted my phone!' just so that I can use that app.

Yeah, you don't "**** around with your device" so overclocking, kernels, radios, and roms are not really for you.
Adfree, TB, ROM manager, root explorer, cache cleaner, etc. The list goes on.. Superuser only.

If you'd knew you wouldn't start threads like this. You're like a guy who buys a lawnmower just because everyone says how awesome they are, but you live in a flat. So you just store your lawnmower in the living room, and have no use for it. If you don't need root, don't root. Many of us need it for certain things we do with our phones. It's not because all the cool kids have it, so we have it also.
Likewise root ls required to carry out certain tasks.
SGS newbies seem to root phone just because rather than as a tool required .

The person that is happy with the device the way it came out of the box has no reason to root. I would think the average XDA member is not that user. The ability to have as much control of your device as possible is what root enables. For instance Titanium Backup allows me to backup my apps so when things go wrong I can restore my device much quicker without re-downloading every app.
Rooting allows the installation of Clockwork or Streakmod recovery which enable Nandroid backups of the entire system. Then to me the ultimate reason to root is to experience custom ROM's. These developers that take it upon themselves to improve the operating systems that run the devices are incredible. Doing things the billion dollar corporations can't or won't do to make the devices perform to the utmost of their abilities. This is not of course for people that don't f73k around with their devices. You have wasted you time 6 times.

I loved my HD2 running hyperdroid. But i just got a Galaxy s2 and Im not impressed with (stock) device. I swear the streaming video was clearer, the wifi reception better, and internet was faster on my rooted HD2 than a stock Galaxys2.
After your flash, are these the kind of things that were improved? I cant even remember how my WM HD2 compared in these areas to my android HD2.
I have had my Evo 3D for a couple of months now and I want to root it. My questions are. Should I do it? What are some common problems if i do it? (example: when the evo 4g did not have 4g until they found the fix) What are some good ROMs up there?
I rooted my Evo 4g and traded it for the Evo 3D,so I have very little experience.

You aren't going to get an answer for this. All roms are different, and designed for different needs. The best thing about rooting is you can easily flash a rom, try it out for a few days, and if you dont like it, flash another.
I rooted mine a few months ago, just flashed a few roms this week
LeeDroids and King Cobra are very solid roms, Leedroids is harder on the battery tho.
I say do it... one of best phones only gets better once rooted.

It all depends on what hboot version you have. If you have hboot 1.50, you must use that method. If you have anything lower than that, you can use Revolutionary, which is MUCH easier.

I had purchased my EVO 3D to replace my EVO 4G - within one hour of purchasing I had rooted and installed the MeanROM v0.4. Basically if you are purchasing a piece of hardware such as a SmartPhone, you should have the capabilities of unlocking its potential. However, always NADROID the device.
Synergy or Viper and the instructions on this website worked pretty well to root it.

I will put in my .2 cents that I run the Stock Rooted ROM 2.17.651.5, and since 2.08, this ROM moves MUCH BETTER. If you want a stock feel, I would run the OEM ROM.

when I was on Windows Mobile 5-6.5, it was always a benefit to install custom roms because of performance and abilities benefits...
but with Android phones, there isn't usually much of a benefit to custom ROMs.
With my EVO 4G, custom roms gave me better battery life and interesting interfaces... but also ran slower, more random reboots, GPS would randomly not work right, Google speach listening would randomly not work, and "tweaks" that just caused bugs. For the last 2 months of my EVO 4G, I ended up just going back to stock and the battery life was poor, but at least the phone worked as intended.
My EVO 3D works perfectly in stock mode and this phone naturally has good battery life (at least 3x more life than my EVO 4G) so its gonna stay that way. I did root for the wifitether app, but not gonna go further than that. Keep it stock man.

Another benefit to rooting & Stock Rooted, besides wifi tether, is the ability to remove HTC Bloat/stock apps that you don't need or use (T.I backup). If you need extra battery life, pickup a Seidio 4000mah battery ($55 on amazon).
So I've had the Rezound now for four days after coming from the Dinc2(rooted of course). And I will say the bloatware is driving me crazy. However having to unlock the bootloader thru HTC and still have have S-On bothers me some. So the question is is it worth going thru HTC (and do they keep records that you've unlocked your bootloader), or would it be best to wait for alpharev or someone like that. Thx in advance.
if bloat is the only thing bothering you why not temp root and freeze the bloat until we have true s-off
The chance of revolutionary creating s-off for us is growing slimmer by the day.
Also if you have the updated firmware you can't temp root. They took that away.

Just HTC unlock and root. The odds of there being s-off anytime soon are very very slim. The odds of there ever being an s-off solution are about the same.
Yeah I would go ahead and unlock. I don't see any point in waiting, someone might have an s-off option in a few months but its just as likely or more likely that we will stay just like we are. I wouldn't have the phone if I was waiting for something that may never come before unlocking and upgrading to a better Rom. I don't see why a developer would put resources into figuring out how to do something that's already been done, while there are a lot of bragging rights to be had most of the really good developers working on this phone are working on things to move us forward.

Thanks alot guys very good points. I guess I was worried about the warranty, but the fact is I sent a fully rooted Dinc2 to back to Verizon and back no problems so I guess I'll take the plunge and root this thing tonight. Thx again

Yes, it is TOTALLY worth doing now!
I used the HTC unlock method, adb'd the
Amon Ra recovery, used Amon Ra for rooting with
SU and Superuser, then used Titanium to take out
all the garbage. Removed about 15 items.
Now my stock phone starts up with a whole lot fewer
things running that I would never use, and battery life
is like my old Increidble 1.
The Rezound is FAST FAST FAST and does everything right.
The process to ge to your Titanium-revised setup is truly easy
and can be done with stuff found right here in the rezound

Just unlock... S-off probably isn't going to happen at this point.
It's worth it Bamf came out with a ROM that fixes a lot of the issues that ICS was having. Plus the tether works in infrastructure mode on ICS
I have been using the HTC evo on sprint for 2 years. My girlfriend saw the note and fell in love, and I was intrigued by the huge screen, since I use my phone more as a smartphone and less as an actual phone. So we went to ATT and bought a couple and are giving them a try, but haven't cancelled our sprint yet. She seems to like it a lot, haven't heard a complaint yet.
Out of the box, I was impressed with the screen for sure. Didn't liek the way the default browser handled zooming/word wrap on a lot of web pages, but a new browser fixed that. Battery life was good, but not great compared to what I was used to on some roms on my rooted evo. I am trying to learn to use the S-pen more. I haven't been blown away by the Note, but my Evo sure does seem small now.
I have been itching to root this thing and start installing some roms, but obviously wanted to wait until I was sure I was keeping it.
A couple questions, if I stay with ATT, I will be porting my sprint number. Will rooting the phone or installing a rom cause any issues with the porting of my old number? More concerned about the unrootingt, I am sure I can figure out the root process from the stickies, but I didn't see anything for unrooting, maybe I missed it. Hey so, I recently switched from Verizon to AT&T. I kept my old number and rooted my note within three days of getting it. Haven't experienced any issues whatsoever and I think you will be blown away once you get hip deep into the Roms that are available. The only problem that I have come across is that I can't stop flashing new roms now.
But, it is super easy, really great guides on here and on Youtube if you're the visual type. I don't think you'll regret it. My only advice is just reading through the threads (or at least the last few pages) before flashing just to see the experiences of others and what to expect before you give it the go ahead. The rooting guides have guides toward the bottom on how to unroot and that's on youtube too.

I had rooted my evo and flashed so many roms I can't even count. So it's not that rooting/flashing scares me, and I am sure I can figure it out with the guides just fine. I was more worried about voiding my warranty or whatever. More so with this phone then with my evo for some reason.
There is an Odin image somewhere on these forums that will get you back to stock. It's pretty easy to do.
So far, this phone is the best phone I've ever had.

yes you can restore your phone to stock if needed (warranty is only reason I can think of). You can do it w/your PC and the stock ROM file as you can see in one of the forum stickies, I think the development forum.
Just get on one of the latest ICS leaked ROMS...I highly recommend the OnlyOne ROM/MOD since it is the based on the latest leak with a few key mods/etc added. Runs gREAt. And has some Samsung Galaxy III add-ons ported (i.e. new Touchwiz UI, S Note, S Voice, tethering). The OTHER ROMS are also solid and have more theming and custom stuff.
Get a PC then use it to Root, install CWM and then install your ROM of choice.
I like staying on Stock stuff and tried to on my Note for a few weeks but there were too many benefits to rooting, etc.
Have fun. Again...the ICS Leaked ROMS are sweet.
The Note, and most Samsung phones for that matter, are among the hardest to hard brick and some of the easiest to return back to stock as a result. Samsung phones are also very easy to root. The Note is no exception. As others have stated, we have an ODIN package to bring you back from everything but a hard brick. And you're not likely to do that so long as you stay on these forums and not the n7000's. That's pretty much the only way people have bricked their devices beyond saving. And even then you can send a hard brick in to some site and save it with JTAG repairs for $50, which is much cheaper than a replacement phone.
Also, in addition to the stock ODIN package, we have a flash counter reset, do ATT will have no indication you ripped whatsoever. People have returned their Note with the flash counter tripped, and had no issues, but it doesn't hurt to be careful. By using the ODIN package and flash counter reset, your warranty is again valid, so you really have nothing to worry about.

Best thing I've done was root and flash this yesterday. The stock experience was driving me crazy (came from a flashed atrix). I say go for it and don't look back. This phone was pretty easy to root and flash.

No need to worry about the flash counter. There's an easy method to reset it and go back completely stock.
My suggestion: flash cwm, root, flash one of the awesome ics roms, and worry about going back to stock later. Totally worth it.
Flapjaxx'a ROM is what I'm currently running and it's up there for the smoothest and best Android experience I've seen through 3 Android phones and many other friends' phones. It's seriously like iOS/WP7 smooth for me. And great battery life. Wouldn't trade my Note for a damn thing. =].

Either is fine. I use non touch because it's what I used on my captivate and infuse and I'm used to it, it has never failed me. I've never used touch, but apparently it's just as stable. It's really a matter of preference add far as I'm concerned and whether you like using the volume and power buttons or your screen.

Holy crap this backup is taking a while. They never took this long on my evo. Maybe 2-3 minutes max. This one has been going for 5-10

Wasn't worried, just complaining, lol. I got the itch to flash and backing up is slowing me down, lol. It's done now, roms flashed, rebooting...

Mine easily took 10-15mins (or so it felt). Same thing for my Touchpad.

Stock gingerbread is leggy as hell. I put the OnlyOne ics rom on and it at least doubled the speed. Running launcher 7 also.

HYFR Only One. I was hoping the GSIII add ons would wow me more, but S-voice seems only ok. Haven't really messed with S-Note yet. But battery life seems amazing.
I suggest going with team perfections objection. Been running it since I rooted and romed her. Runs smooth and can easily get through the day with music running nonstop. Welcome and I hope you enjoy your stay.
