[Q] Hide keyboards? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So installed by default, we have the Honeycomb keyboard, the TouchWiz keyboard, that TalkBack thing, and the default voice keyboard. None of them seem to be able to be hidden or uninstalled, even if I root. How's that exactly?

Are you using a custom rom? I haven't gottin around to rooting my tab yet. I have a wifi only version and don't have to deal with any of that bloat ware the carriers throw in so I haven't been in a rush.
But I do know a little from rooting my eVo4g if you just root and don't install a custom rom their are going to be some apps and services that are just embedded in the system frame work so deep that either they can't be un installed or if they are it will mess things up a bit.
Also are you sure your looking in the right place??? I forget what it was but i was trying to un install something and I had managed to find a folder that just happened to be named the same as the one I was looking for... Only problem was it was in completely the wrong folder tree. I happens and it only took me 40mins and the help of 2 buddies on a IRC to figure it out... Felt like an idiot!!!
Again I haven't do any rooting on my tab yet... But just though I'd throw that out there.
Sent from my Galaxy10.1 TouchWiz/ADWex equipped Starship.

Try deleting the keyboards you don't need from /system/app. There are:
AxT9IME.apk = Samsung keyboard
LatinIMEgoogle.apk = Honeycomb keyboard
Swype.apk
Talkback.apk
That should shorten the list. Make a backup if anything goes wrong.

[Q] Stock Vibrant Applications?

First off, I will admit that I am relatively new to rooting android phones. I did have multiple Jailbroken iPhones, however that is something different entirely.
So I just recently flashed Eugene's Vibrant5 rom, and I absolutely love it... however I do miss some of the stock applications that come with the Vibrant. I was wondering if anyone happened to have the .apks for the original applications? I have a Titanium Backup from before the flash, and it shows the applications in the list... however when I try and Restore Missing Applications + System Data it doesn't do anything. There isn't a whole lot I miss, things like Thinkfree Office. I know there is Adobe Reader for free in the Market, but I did try it and it didn't work for me. Not being able to search through a .pdf file was an EPIC fail for me.
Any help would be appreciated
I also think having a thread with all of the stock .apk's listed for download would be a great idea. I am also rooted, and if someone could tell me how to get these off of my phone in .apk format, I won't mind uploading any of them, if not all, of course over time
are they located in /system/app/ folder?
I'm already on Vibrant5 rom, I can verify that there are a lot of .apk files in there, I can't say whether or not ALL the stock ones are there though. Is there a relatively decent demand for these to be posted? If so I don't mind reverting back to stock and pulling them all off for everyone.
Bump on this one, been really wanting the stock calender and the calculator .apk cause they both just have more features then those that are on eugenes roms ( google map points saved to calender appointments, much more complex calculations avail on the calc besides both just look better imo).....
A bunch of these apps can't even be backed up through titanium, it unity copies data fort some reason or another. Apks of these would be awesome or at the least some files and the required terminal commands would be appreciated.

Force closing

Is it just me or does it seem like more apps fc once you have root?
Sent from my BNTV250 using Tapatalk
Root gives you the ability to install some apps that are not compatible with the Nook.
Do stock apps FC on you, or just ones you side-loaded?
If sideloaded you may need to find a specific version of that app known to work on the Nook.
We need a master list (wiki maybe) of app versions known good...
This will change when we can finally get Roms installed. The nook tablet is missing many essential drivers and apps that make it possible to run other apps. It really has been stripped down... We are getting close. Fingers crossed...
As mentioned, root access on its own shouldn't effect stability . As for FC's? I haven't seen one yet on my rooted NT. I'm using ADW EX, have used Go and have a ton of apps installed including many of the $.10 apps from the market. This thing is super stable! I've found a few quirks like the white on white menus, but they have been aesthetic in nature.
Root related force closes should only occur, imo, if you've messed with permissions, folder structure, or manually edited system files to affect stability. If you've installed things that required messing with permissions, you need to reboot the nook (which resets a lot of permissions). Other than sideloading incompatible* apps (or different versions that aren't supported on an NT) I haven't seen any issues.
*Not in android store? Likely on the incompatible list.
I've been using Go launcher yeah - I heard the very recent ADW messed up the way dock works? I considered testing it out but read that recently.

^^you hit it square on the nose. When i firsted rooted apps installed no problem then i tinkered w/ a db file and all hell broke loose. Lol. Once i did a full wipe / factory reset / reroot ive yet to encounter a force close. Im still trying to figure out how to use the bn appinstaller so programs show on the main page.

Yep! When in doubt or when things go haywire, this is usually the easiest fix. Glad it works

[Q] How to know if I have completely gotten rid of an app?

Hey. Just got into the world of smartphones with a Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100P), running Samsung's stock ICS (XXLPH). After a fairly smooth rooting of the phone, I did something stupid - I tried to use CWM to install this mod - an NFC enabler. Stupid, because the mod wasn't designed for ICS.
I was fortunate enough to have the enabler 'only' freeze the phone every 5 seconds instead of bricking it. Then I went in through the adb shell and deleted the appropriate apk.
My question is - is the apk the whole of the app? It looks like it, certainly - the phone works like before, no problem. I'm just worried about leaving 'garbage' around it.
I don't expect everyone here to be an expert on this particular mod - but in general, if I am manually uninstalling an app, do I need to worry about anything besides the apk?
If so, where else should I look (again, generally, where do apps tend to change or dump things)? I'd ask the developer, but it seems rude to privately message him, and I can't exactly post in the relevant thread.
No you should be ok. Nothing more needs to be done. Some apps also install data on the sd card which show up in 'My files'. It doesn't affect the phone in any way but if you find anything just delete it. I have mine sort by date so changes show at the top of the list.

Creating a rom for the velociy micro cruz t408, help.?

Hey xda. Okay so I'm here yet again asking for help, both in general and directly from Finlessbob or Dochoppy. So I have finally determined what I want in my new ROM "SOSA-Tab 1.0 Apricot" (or for Phones, SOSA 1.0 Apricot). Here are some of the features:
For the Nextbook Premium 7 and Velocity Micro Cruz T408:
1. Beats Audio 2. Increased GraphicsQuality 3. Speed Tweaks 4. Settings Tweaks Integration (Hoping to integrate bottom status bar BEFORE release, If anyone can help me with that it would be much appreciated) 5. (NP7 only) Cover Flow Music Player
And the list goes on and on. I am not going to tell about the phone because that is not my mission at the moment. Right now I need some help building the ROM for the Velocity. I have rooted it, but I cannot integrate the root into a custom rom, or anything else for that matter. The tablet comes stock with a recovery image that allows you to flash thefirmwaredownloaded offof the velocity cruz website in it. Here is my problem. I took out and added some stuff (namely superuser, an ereader app, etc.) and flashed in the recovery. My tablet is then sent into a bootloop and it wont work until I wipe the device via recovery and non of the stuff I added is integrated. The link provided to the site directly links you to the place where you download the firmware, for those that want to take a crack at looking at the rom, have fun. Its not in some funny file format like a cramfs or ext3 system image, its just in a ".tgz" (fancy zip file,use7zip)and insidethatisa ".tar" file(again justanotherfancyform of a zip file, use 7zip also).
For the sake of time I am not going to go too deep into the directories of the system folders, as anyone who has taken a crack at deving for android knows whats insideof them. Hopethatdoesn't look like a bunch of mumbo-jumbo, and likeI said if you want to take a crack at it, just download the firmware from the website linked above. I also want to know (from anyone with experience in this like dochoppy or finlessbob) can I convert something to expand the apps space like you all did for the Nextbook Premium 7, because 523mb of space is cool and all, but (hating to sound oh so greedy) I want MORE lol, so if there is a possibility for that I would love some assistance. And one last thing, how do I change the splash image for it, there is no ".rle" file like there was for the nextbook, so help would be appreciated for that also.
Thanks, Ognimnella
P.S. - if anyone knows how to build a custom cwm recovery for tablets like thiss that would be helpful also. Im working on custom roms but it wont let me flash.!

I have a Cruz T410, and I hear they are releasing a new line with the exact same hardware but ICS. I'm pretty good at this modding stuff, but a novice in ROM or kernel cooking, so I will be little to no help most likely. I figure that if we can extract the ROM from the new one and modify it to update our T4XXs.
I have a friend who works retail that should have one I can play with soon, so if you know how I might extract it and get it to you to mod lemme know.
As for what I've done successfully to my Cruz is:
Full Root via Gingerbreak
LCD Density to 140
Removed Status Bar (Root Explorer to remove from system folder after titanium back up)
Remapped buttons, Vol up = Menu, Vol down = Back, Power = End
I used blade buddy to change end behavior to home then screen off so holding it down still brings the shutdown menu up as normal. Made a "Sound" shortcut on homepage.
ADW EX with ICS theme
Android PRO widgets with Lucid theme.
Latest Modded Google Play
(Was tricky but got it!)
Wave Launcher
(Awesome WebOS like gesture bar of shortcuts, with sound and screen off shortcut.)
SwiftKey Keyboard
(Best for tablets!)
Every Emulator Running Smooth
System Tuner
(Adjust SD Cache to 3 or 6MB, it gives a big performance boost. Also change the auto kill to aggressive, and clean cache)
All GAPPS (Lots of trial and error to get newest possible versions of everything)
Dolphin HD ofcourse
Fully functional remote desktop (Awesome without the ugly taskbar!)
Removed Bloatware
Once again, I'm noobish, but I make much better tablets jealous.
I got the tablet as a gift and really wish it was more popular because of its potential. I'm poor so this is going to be my tab until it dies.
I don't post much and I feel kind of silly, but it feels like there isn't much good information out there for how to make it cool. I'll explain how I did everything in detail for those who ask. And would love suggestions.
Also!
I have an adapter for USB in, is it possible to add a host controller for keyboards or gamepads?
Thanks in advance..
Well damn ur a hell of a let further than I am, I rooted it, and installed hcl launcher to give me a honeycomb feel. I modified the build prop to view me as a nexus s tablet and installed the play store too, took a lot of combination experiments but I have a zip with the needed files to install. I think rather than REMOVE the status bar, I just wanna move it to the bottom of the screen. I have Nova 3 and modern combat 2 black Pegasus installed, but the calibration is misaligned due to the persist ant and horribly placed status bar. If I could find the place in the code where I can move the status bar to the bottom of the screen rather than the top, this alone would make the thing a keeper.
Oh and Google host controller for android and report back whether or not we have USB hosting, if we do, I smell a game pad purchase in the future

Right on, we are on the same page with the taskbar. I have tried installing the default gingerbnread statusbar to make it where it can hide at least, but it still showed up as the crummy stock bar even after removing the SystemUI.APK from System folder. Another option:
Copy systemUI.APK to your SD. Remove it from system folder, uninstall, re install.
This makes it show up in services so you can disable it when you want to play games or watch videos.
I think you can do this with Titanium by converting it to a user app aswell.
I too have a back up of all the latest GAPPS and my modded bulid.prop if anyone needs em.
I'll keep working on it, glad I'm no longer alone, lol.

general q about finding/working with particular service/app, in Titanium backup

title says it all.. ill try to be brief - rooted galaxy S7, not the edge, android 6.0.1 i believe..
touchpal keyboard app.. fantastic keyboard BUT in recent years, too much bloat. most of it can be turned off if you carefully dig thru the settings.
there is one thing that still appears, and its ****ing annoying.
when i look at services, touchpal has a few things running as youd imagine, and one is "com.cootek.smartinputv5.enrichLife" there are 1-2 others but theyre the main process etcetc...
my question is this: when i scroll through titanium backup, all the stuff that touchpal installs does NOT appear in the format above, android and samsung stuff does, you guys all know it.. "com.android.blahblah" etcetc.. right? ok, so where the hell is com.cootek.smartinputv5.enrichLife? why doesnt it appear in the list? is the stuff im talking about only displayed in that way for system things and not for user installed 3rd party apps? seems like if that were the case, it would apply to some of the samsung stuff too..
im thinking if i just freeze com.cootek.smartinputv5.enrichLife then yay, problem solved. but its nowhere in the list. maddening. if i cant sort it, im installing a VERY old ver of touchpal from the apk which i saved long ago, before all this ad/bloat bull****.
