How does this work? Is it like an airave but using WiFi?
hmmm, can't say i'm familiar with airave but from a quick google search, yeah, i would agree with your description... would be sweet, make and receive calls over wifi and hopefully not draw from your monthly airtime bucket. probably like UMA for blackberries.
i believe T-mobile is doing this!
http://www.rogers.com/web/content/add-ons/callingservices
From my understanding we will not have this anytime soon. The problem isn't getting the apk working... We would simply install and then flash the wifi calling libs.. im sure there would have to be compatible kernels etc.... They problem is that sprints architecture. Does not support wifi calling at this time... Some one please correct me if im wrong..

Wifi calling is essentially using your router as a cell tower, however you are using the Wifi radio instead of HSPA+ or 3G radio. It also disables your 3G antennae so it saves on power. If you have crappy reception in your home this makes it all better. Texting and calling work. When you near the limits of your home Wifi zone, the system 'hands off' the responsibility of the call to the cell towers.
Requires you to subscribe to a Wifi calling feature.
Someone please rip it or extract it and make it available I have an unlocked unbranded SGS 2 on Rogers and I'm in desperate need. Also my first Android device.
Evo 3D's have that apk by the way and I have access to lots...
If there is someone technical enough with this stuff reading this please reveal yourself and lets make this happen.

I work for Robbers, I can guarantee you they have developed the apk JUST for the EVO 3D though... This is why I need someone technical to help me out. I can go and look for the apk within one of the many phones we have; I just need someone to guide me as to what i need to look for and I can get it done.
I am brand new to the Android scene, came from BB world so I need some guidance from more inclined folks on the forum.

I am on rogers using a samsung infuse. I am also subscribed to their uma service. Is it really as easy as you say, installing the evo's apk and flashing wifi calling libs? I would love to have uma on my infuse as I have no signal in my apartment.
I've never "flashed libs"(libraries i'm assuming) but I'm excited to learn if this is a possibility!!
Whats required of me for this to become reality? I would really like this to happen and I have the means to deliver the files.
It will be up to someone much more technical to take over after that.
What should I look for in terms of files? I need guidance please.
I've got a Desire 4G unlocked and using it with Rogers. I have ZERO cell signal in my apartment and would LOVE to be able to use this service. I'm concerned this may not be possible for some esoteric technical reason, because I can't imagine why they wouldn't roll it out to their other android phones if it was, but I wholeheartedly support this effort.

I'm not 100% sure what to look for, but I'm interested in learning and hope someone much brighter than I regarding this can help. Do you have access to the apk's on a Rogers evo 3d? I'm not even sure how they'd be named but something along the lines of wifi calling or uma in the name would be a good start.
It may well not be possible, but technically I can't think of a reason why, unless the apk is linked to the evo. Hopefully not though. I'm going to keep looking into it until I at least find an answer.
If you have an evo with root access that's a good start though, I would imagine.
learning is fun! (hopefully I do some of it)
rogers really needs to optimize this app. I have disabled it on my evo 3d but its still accounts for 25% of my battery usage. also its the culprit that keeps my phone awake (up time = awake time) and drains my battery very much even i have my screen off overnight
Is there a way you could post that apk so maybe we can try and get it to work? I tried hooking up a device from work but apparently I cant even get to the system directory to be able to copy it.
I'm wondering, do we need a rooted phone to be able to get to it and all other apk files installed?
Hello gang,
here is the apk from my Rogers EVO3D.
I don't know if it works at all or if I extracted it properly!
http://www15.zippyshare.com/v/63717910/file.html
EDIT: It should be noted that the t-mobile wifi calling app works on my Rogers EVO3D as well. They appear to be interchangable, on "supported" devices
Thanks for providing the apk. I assume in order to install and use the app I need to root my phone? Would that be correct? I tried installing it but it keeps forcing shutdown even on startup of my phone.
Also how did you install the tmobile version of the app?
After testing, it appears that this APK can't be just 'installed' like a regular app... it's going to force close.
i tried installing on Leedroid for EVO3D gsm, and got the force close. Looking at some other threads, I think it needs to be installed in some special way (some other phones have an addon pack that needs to be flashed via recovery)
The only thing that worked for me was the t-mobile wifi app on the same stock rogers rom (but arguable its just replacing the same app with a different icon)

It's cool that you managed to install it without a crash, but this feature does need carrier-side support as well.

Hey guys, droppin in to add something to the forum real quick before bed..... I got my hands on the newest ESPRIMG.nbh and in messing with it i realized we all flashed that eng build in order to be able to flash custom ROMs etc. Well in doing so we also all downgraded our radio to 7.07.35.02S..... Well i doubt u guys remember but the newest Radio is 7.08.35.04S... Anyways, i built a new "SlideMeRoot3" and included the radio in the installation package as well as apps2sd but need to discuss it with Eugene before releasing it. Soooo i made a quick update package for u guys with the newest radio until then. Install as u would any custom ROM on slide by rebooting to stock recovery, applying update.zip to boot into our temp recovery, and apply .zip from SD. You can do this over any ROM so dont be alarmed, i just wanted to get us back up to par with the release build. So now we have the release ROM AND the release radio. You can expect all the same improvements as having the newest radio on any other device (increased battery life, signal strength etc) But dont quote me on that lol..... CR
Newest Slide Radio
DONE!
Was a bit nervous by all the new screens when I applied this, just kept my hand off of the device until the reboot was completed. Looks good now though.
I received this after boot up.

Interesting. I didn't know before now you could patch parts of the Android this way. VERY useful.
Does this mean that a rom could be made to upgrade to 2.2 that does not wipe your personal customizations, for example?

Lol! Thats what my touch pro 2 does is switch between 3G and H. Its just an htc thing to let you know you're switching between UMTS and HSPA. Both are 3G but HSPA is a bit faster.
but your speed indicates your on HSPA+ which is a good deal quicker than UMTS. Not really 4G but just as fast, technically it 3.75G. 4G just sounds better so most call it that...

Hah thanks for the laugh xD
Anyway, I should have worded that differently: "Have you flashed a ROM that helps with the multitasking issue".
Most of them do, but if you don't want to flash a ROM some people reported that if you change the setting within developer options to 'At most 4 processes' for the background process limit it helps alleviate this issue.
This is by far my biggest problem with this phone. From what I've heard, stock ICS doesn't have the same issue.
Yeah, it pisses me off when I scroll through a list and go out of the window, ONLY to have that damn list reload back to the first item.
There HAS to be a way to get rid of that permanently if stock ICS phones don't have this problem?
Yeah, the multitasking is the only issue I have with this phone. Reminds me of the fail WP7 has with multitasking :/
Yeah a lot of the issues with this phone can only be alleviated through rooting it and flashing a custom rom. As I stated in another thread with my opinions of this phone and the pros/cons, this phone requires the user to root it in order to have a pleasurable experience.

Which is really disappointing. We shouldn't have to root in order to get things like this to work properly. If HTC is going to place a button dedicated to a specific function on their phones, you'd think that function would actually work.

No one is arguing against it, we are merely providing solutions to the problem. Furthermore, if we want to nitpick the button isn't a 'multitasking' one, it simply brings up a recent apps list. That being said I do hope HTC fixes this. It seems to affect all the Sense 4.0 phones. I know the One X has this problem by simply looking at their forum and from what I tested the One S at T-Mobile while helping my parents get a new phone, it seems that the S also has the same problem.
Rooting and flashing roms hasn't fixed my multitasking issues..I think its a deeper sense issue..I've manually adjusted min free settings with no luck..so Im assuming that its Kernel related buried deep..its my only gripe with this otherwise perfect device..and some people actually like its killing of apps..although it doesn't seem to free up any extra ram ...edit - hasn't the issue been resolved with the att hox with an ota? I thought I saw that somewhere
Yep rooted and romed. I dont want to say which one because u don't think it matters. Non of it would bother me so much if my new phone wasn't slower than my old one. Kinda sucks to have full signal but can't load a Page, stick it in my pocket it becomes a hand warmer and the battery is dead next time I use it.

The worst is when I play Sega's Sonic Adventure app or open up stumble upon and every single time I go back to the home screen, sense has to reload. I've never experienced that with my Xoom.
Are the ROMs effective at fixing the multitasking issue? That, ps3 bluetooth, and otg support would be the only major reasons I'd root my phone (maybe titanium backup too for contingency). I'm not root shy, my OG EVO was rooted two weeks after I got it, but, in the long run, everything seems more consistent when running completely stock, and I can pretty much find an app for everything I need.
Also, do you guys think that if we send in enough complaints that HTC would get its act together for the jelly bean update?

I'll also have to agree that rooting and. A custom rom still don't do much to alleviate the issue. Chrome still reloads every time I come back. From what i see, and from what i search on the web, the EVO 3D ICS , didn't get the WiFi Direct feature. But i really don't understand why.
Is there WiFi Direct on evo 3d ? Cause from what i know is a standar ICS feature , and doesn't require any special hardware.
Is this a serious question? really??????????????????????????????? Google "wifi direct" come back at me and tell me what it is. then if you have more questions..... feel free to ask once you actually understand what it is. sorry to sound mean. but really?

Ok , i get it. But is there a way to connect 2 Evo 3D Devices and send some files between them , useing the WiFi without an router or not? I sow an a web site , saying the the galaxy s2 is able to do this , but the evo 3d no :| that's why i am confused.
And i don't have another phone so i can test it.
answer. yes! there is. sadly.... I don't remember what it was. hmmmmm I think it was some sort of proof of concept app someone had. I tried it out and it actually worked! BUT! I just don't remember what it was. Then again... I forget if I had to be rooted or not too. the evo 3d IS A ROUTER! I don't know if you understood me the FIRST TIME I just hinted that out. You can connect devices to it like a router... it has its own IP address. you can make an FTP server on it which would allow you to connect lets say a computer to your cell allowing you to connect to the FTP server and download the files you want. DON'T BELIEVE SOME LYING WEBSITE THAT IS GETTING PAID TO PROMOTE THE STUPID SAMSUNG PHONES! LOL really!? Even the IPhone can do this! Almost every smartphone today can do it.... but the issue is that the providers are illegally blocking it to promote their own crap version of it and then they limit it so you can't use it.
Either way... you need to root your phone. Just take like 2-3 hours of your day. back everything up. WRITE DOWN all your settings. then just root it. if you don't know what you're doing, don't play stupid and install crap mods that you see on this site. just install the rooted factory software. because when we get 4.0, you'll just be doing it all over again... but then again. in the long run. this is all a piece of cake.
Ok, thx runcool.

Wi-Fi Direct allows Android 4.0 (API level 14) or later devices with the appropriate hardware to connect directly to each other via Wi-Fi without an intermediate access point. Using these APIs, you can discover and connect to other devices when each device supports Wi-Fi Direct, then communicate over a speedy connection across distances much longer than a Bluetooth connection. This is useful for applications that share data among users, such as a multiplayer game or a photo sharing application.

That was unnecessary.
If you're trying to get your post count up, post something meaningful, this isn't the first time I've seen you post something pointless.
And, OP, I actually agree with you here.
When I was using a Sense 4.0 ROM, the phone had it. Using a Sense 3.6 ROM, I don't have it.
So I know that the phone has the hardware and is capable of it, but no devs have implemented it.
If you don't really care about 3D and WiFi tethering, install a Sense 4.0 ROM and you'll have the feature.
Otherwise, you'll just have to wait and live without it.

It isn't in CleanROM either. I know you can still send a scheduled e-mail, but the option to scheduled SMS I believe should be in messages screen -> menu -> scheduled messaging.
Maybe this feature was taken out. There are plenty of market app substitutes, though...

Yeah I've tried everything to get it from the stock text application and nothing. Plus I know I can use a third party app but I really don't want to go that route if possible. Vzw always finds a way to screw up something for me.ugh.

No, we're supposed to be able to schedule a text message straight from the messaging app, this is so frustrating to realize that such a great feature apparently was removed by vzw. I've never understand wasting the time to get upset over something this simple.
There has to be 50 different apps that can do this. In the time it took you to type this, you could have installed one of them and scheduled the text to go out...........
As far as I know, this was never an advertised feature of the VZW Note 2, and honestly, this is the first I'm hearing of it.
Check out the review on gsmarena for the n2. It was a business feature for the n2. Works much like scheduled emailing

I have tons of apps, but hate third party messengers. Even if didn't, I wouldn't want to install something I don't really want for one feature. That being said, if it's somewhere in the phone, I'm sure it could be brought out, like blocking mode, etc. Time will tell

Check out the review on gsmarena for the n2. It was a business feature for the n2. Works much like scheduled emailing
Here got it for you

And to the above poster, not imnuts, some people just want to use native features instead of loading up on apps. It isn't for us to question why he wants it. In the same time it took you to post that you could have been helpful and found him a useful scheduling sms ap

I don't see Verizon anywhere on that. Also, if you're reading reviews, 90% of the time, they're for the international version, which is going to vary as far as software and sometimes hardware. If you really want to know where it is, ask VZW, as they made the final call on it being included or not.

To imnuts' point, that clearly says Galaxy Note II N7100 which would be the international one. That does not say the Verizon i605 was going to get that feature.
Meh, most of the roms are built off the international versions, right? I don't see this included in any of their roms. Op was just asking if it was there. They didn't advertise scheduled emailing, but it is there. Odd they'd have that feature, but take out sms. Probably cause one uses data and the other one goes towards their unlimited texts. Anyways I was just showing where people would get that impression. I never stated specifically that it was for vzw, but an advertised feature of the note 2. And yeah we all know how vzw does things their way. But can anyone confirm this feature is indeed on stock sms? Then it might be as simple as pushing the sms apk over.
I appreciate everyone's responses and yeah I just hate to have an app that isn't needed if the feature was just left in...I might just root this thing and try to add another messaging app from another version if possible. Like this isn't a MUST have thing for me but I can't figure out why it's not here. Whoever pointed out that vzw left it as a part of the email because that consumes data vs unlimited texts makes perfect sense.
just you go sms, has everything you will ever need including scheduling messages.
If it really is on the international version then I dont think it would be that hard to get it on the VZW version, but thats a big if. I havent seen this on any of my phones in quite a while, then again I havent specifically looked for it either.
I would think if it was on the international version it would be on the CleanRom or Beans versions that are based on international roms.

thought beans roms was verizon based, but cleanROM 4.6 is international. Guess we could ask in that thread.
I was actually looking for this a couple of days ago when someone asked me to text them a reminder for some hockey tickets they were giving me. Had to set an alarm to remind to send the text. This would have been easier...
Oh hai

Unfortunately, it appears the Verizon Galaxy S4 will keep the notification we all hate so very much. Luckily, this does not apply to any other carriers, similarly to the S3. I am quite disappointed.

Nothing surprising ... Verizon usually destroys everything on the phone and put it's ugly logo and bloat everywhere.

Indeed. I was hoping they listened from the first time...
What is this wifi notification? I have a Droid Charge on Verizon and I don't see anything Verizon branded in wifi.

New phones get a persistent WiFi notification in the drawer. Incredibly annoying.
i'll just hack the crap out of it, and stream 80+ gigabytes of data monthly to piss them off. unlimited data ftw.

not sure if this will work on s4, obviously its for the s iii
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/07/0...g-wifi-notification-on-the-verizon-galaxy-s3/
and obviously we will have to wait and see, once the verizon version comes out.
i'm surprised they don't force wifi when available :silly:
Just a quick tip to temporarily stop in until reboot is hod the notification from the drop down, tap app info than tap force stop. It will get rid of it until a better root method is provided

I would take this response from the chat representative with a grain of salt. Verizon doesn't tell them much and they are notorious for providing misinformation. Take the S4 pre-orders for example. It seemed like everyone that did an online chat got a different answer as to what time they started. While it's likely that Verizon will force this WiFi notification on us, I really don't think this can be taken as a confirmation. The chat representatives most likely have not seen the Verizon model, nor is it likely that they've been given very much information about it.
Just trying to be optimistic here, although I'll be surprised if it doesn't have the ongoing notification.

Exactly. Chat reps are the pond scum of the Verizon food chain. Don't trust them for any sort of technical / non-basic information.
Although I would assume Verizon will keep this notification to annoy people who use too much network data.
i see it as a way of getting everyone off their 4g network so i can hog all the bandwidth

This isn't really the first we've seen of it, the previous gen flagship phones had this on Sprint by default as well (S3/EvoS). I don't remember how the S2 worked but I'm inclined to say that the "Sprint Connection Optimizer" became big in early 2012.
You and I may be against it, but there is a good case to be made for mobile data offloading onto your home/public WiFi connection. If anyone cares to read some interesting opinions on this, head over to S4GRU: http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/2...ta-on-wifi-even-though-you-pay-for-unlimited/ (starting at post #6)

I agree, but this should classify as nontechnical, basic information that even they could process.
