Why do I need unlock code? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my Motorola Atrix off ebay today, i have used Dell Streak for past 6 months.
However, for some reason i need an unlock pin to use it??? What does this mean? I pay 2gb AT&T data plan and such. I thought i would just be able to switch SIM cards and it would work? I've always done this for my other phones (Pre plus, streak, captivate)
Please Help. I don't think i should have to pay/wait for a dumb unlock code...

Is it att branded?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App

yes
I mean it has an AT&T cover on the back... So i would assume that the atrix is AT&T branded

Did you buy it somewhere unofficially or straight from a reseller?

Where I bought
I bought it off of ebay. Seller, Jectronics.

[Q] AT&T Does not have SIM unlock code

I have two Atrix and several other devices on my account which has been in existence since the Cingular reign, so I went ahead and asked for SIM unlock codes for all my devices.
Well all is well except for my second Atrix, they said the device is unlockable but they do not have the unlock code for it.
I asked her what that meant and she that they just don't have it.
Does anyone know what that means?
I would call and talk to somebody else just to make sure...

talk to another customer rep. I got my unlock code for my Atrix very easily from AT&T

is my dll streak 5 locked

I bought a dell streak last week from a seller on amazon uk.
I put my sim card in and it comes up and says:
Network locked
more than 10 attempts were made to enter the pin.
take this device to your carrier to have it unlocked.
I think its americian and on the at&t network.
Is there anything i can do to get it working?
Thanks,
Henry

There are more than one thread here in the forum claiming they were able to get past that very message although only Dell is supposed to be able to do it.... BUT there are claims they worked

Tracfone prepaid SIM card not working after unlocking S II

Hello,
I just bought a refurbished SGH-I777 which seems to be great. It came with Android 2.3.6 and Gingerbread UCKK6, if I'm not mistaken. It was locked so I rooted it to unlock it. It's now Android 2.3.4, Kernel version Siyah 2.6.35.14, Build number UCKH7. It seems to be unlocked. I tried several friends' SIM card and they all were recognized, but when I tried to use mine (a prepaid Tracfone card I was using on an old LG5000G), I'm told the USIM card is not valid and that I need to buy a valid SIM Card. I tried another prepaid Tracfone from a friend and it didn't work, either.
Are prepaid Tracfone SIM cards compatible with this unlocked unit? Or do I need to change some settings in the S2?
thanks!
Rooting and flashing custom roms doesn't unlock the phone for use with other sims. Fyi.

As you can see, I'm new to this.
After rooting the unit, I used Helroz app to unlock the phone. Tried several SIM cards and they all seemed to work, save the Tracfone prepaid ones.
Tracfones have special hardware and non-standard SIMs. You can only use a Tracfone SIM on a Tracfone phone.
Thanks, I didn't know that.
Is there any way to transfer the minutes I have left in that Tracfone SIM to a non-Tracfone card? Or am I stuck with Tracfone until I use up all those minutes?
It's a closed system. You have to use up the mins with Tracfone or just eat them as a loss.
I guess I'll use it for a while as I have over 400 minutes left.
Any tips as the best pay-as-you-go plans here in the US? I don't need a monthly plan of any sort as I really don't use the phone that much. I would need something similar to Tracfone, but compatible with my S II.
Looks like Straight Talk is compatible, but I think a monthly plan of $30 (or more) is required.
I don't know of any minute based BYOD services. Best case is a non-contract monthly plan. Simple mobile is another option, but you'll only get Edge data on an AT&T phone.

I'm running straight talk on my GS2 and getting HSPA+15 all day every day. $60 kit from their website that included SIM and one month of unlimited everything. Best purchase I ever made for my GS2!
P.S. The monthly plan is $45! Cheaper than AT&T by a long shot

What's AT&T policy on SIM unlock?

I am going on a vacation on Monday. Since my developer edition has been delayed, I won't be able to get it before I leave town and so I am consider getting one from my local AT&T store.
It seems that the boot loader of the AT&T version is unlockable, what about sim unlock? I still have a year to go for my two years contact with AT&T. So I have to pay them the full price anyway, but the question is will they do the Sim unlocking for me when I buy the phone?

If you paid full price for the phone you should call AT&T and ask them to unlock the SIM..
As far as I know, they should do it since it's not tied to a contract..

Why won't Att let me unlock my phone

I have the att HTC one that I bought off contract at best buy around july. I've been considering unlocking the phone to test out T-Mobile. I've been requesting online from att to have the device unlock but it keeps telling me that the device currently can't be unlocked. What gives?

Why don't you just call??

How long have you had service? You need to have ATT service for a minimum 6 months I believe.
I have been with att since 2009. I am still under contract til Oct 2014 but that shouldn't have anything to do with it since the phone was paid in full. I thought it was six months for their gophones? At least that's what I understood from their website.

hey there josé!
i hope you are well. why don't you hop on over to the good folks at http://www.unlockcode247.com/imei/1/26/Unlock-code-for-any-ATampT-TMOBILE-HTC- ? :good:
i have used them a few times. the unlock cost me $3.20 and about 2 hours. a few times they took longer. but it's a comin'
and then you don't have to beg for a solution, when you already paid so much for the phone. :silly:
Okay well here's a quick one to bust some bubbles. I bought my HTC One via Wal-Mart on promotion in April. In June I figured to hell with At&t. With that being said I rooted the phone and got S off. Then found a mod on the Development fourm for the One that let me unlock the international menu. I bought a Net10 SIM Card at Best Buy. Cut the SIM to fit and BOOM!!!!!!!! No need for a UNlock code or any of that. Net10 gave me the apn info and from there I've been able bypass all the usual hassle.

OK I was finally able to unlock the phone. I called Att and told them that I had purchased the phone off contract at best buy and that when I would request the unlock code via their website it wouldn't accept my request. She then tells me that if I had bought it off contract the phone should have been unlocked, which was a lie. So then she starts questioning me asking where I bought it, how much I paid etc. I then told her look I have the receipt if you don't believe me. She says well we are going to need you to fax us the receipt. While she is setting up the claim she asked why I wanted to unlock it. I told her because At&t coverage at my house sucks and I wanted to test out t-mobile since my brother gets excellent coverage on his htc one. So I faxed the receipt and next morning had the unlock code. I tried unlocking the phone only to realize that since I had converted my phone to gpe I had to reconvert back using the leaked ruu and then unlock the phone. I am happy to report that finally I was able to unlock the phone. And then I converted back to gpe. Far way better speeds and coverage on T-Mobile prepaid than on att. Well at least at my home. I'm looking testing the coverage on T-Mobile at work and school before I make my decision on fully changing carriers.

Why can't I unlock the phone if I paid full price for it? I don't see why they should make me wait to get the unlock code.

yep, you didnt get lucky, they had no choice but to unlock it if you paid in full
just a tedious process that they made you run through
very simple solution, call ATT and tell them you are going overseas for a month and u want to be able to use ur phone with prepaid sims so u need them to unlock it for you and they will do so with no questions asked

Wow you are one lucky guy. Tried the going overseas line and got nothing. So i went through an online unlocking service. So which carrier did you end up sticking with?
Hi ,
I flashed a hell fire rom on my att htc one. Can i just enter the unlock code or do I need to first restore my phone to what it was before (as it came from AT&T and then enter unlock code ).
OP,
did you ever get the phone unlocked?
I'm in a similar situation as you but have a Moto X and they flat out refused to unlock my phone.
Tried some 3rd party unlockers and the code they gave me did not work.

Normally their policy is after 3 months from the moment you got the phone you can request the unlock code. and also the unlocking really comes out of who you talk to... Some are very easy going other not.

Yea, i saw that its 60 days. is it possible to activate my phone overseas for 60 days? It really does seem like the unlocking is very random and down to whoever you get on the customer support line. I've had no luck and have a 500 dollar paper weight !
me and my brother both bought our AT&T HTC one's in contract.
we both used a third party online unlocker to unlock both our phones.
Costs us each 10$ and within minutes our phones were unlocked.
it's stupid of them to antagonize their clients like that.
just drives people aways.
