can i unroot the ota of tw? or get it back to stock so i can return it? i tried flashing the 3.1 zip in cwm but it said it had to abort. downloaded file again (just incase it was a bad file) and same thing. can someone please point me in the right direction. i didn't have a problem with unrooting the tab when it was 3.1. help would be much appreciated. i'm on the us retail wifi
Unrooting procedure is in The sticky of the development section.

i went there.. my problem is that when i tried flashing the 3.1 file it aborted the install. so do i even need to flash that? since i am on tw ota i figure that is why the file wont install.
Did you make a nandroid backup before you took the toichwiz ota? If so you can flash that. Then flash the stock bootloader via odin.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
nope. i didn't do a backup until i rooted after tw ota..
Might have gotten a bad download. Try redownloading the zip and flashing again. Make a backup first and save it to your computer in case something goes wrong.

i tried that. (as i posted in first post) i can give it another try. do you know if that 3.1 zip file is supposed to work?
follow up.. its a no go. there has to be some way to get this tab back or unrooted.
is there a way to hide the superuser icon so i can return the tab?

Yeah, renaming the apk might work as a last resort

Sorry dude I was on my phone must have missed about redownloading. You should search for an odin flash .tar file of the stock 3.1 ROM. You will need to use Odin to get the stock recovery back anyway.
No reason to apologize. I just appreciate the help. I can't find the file you are referring to. Any way to supply a link?
After searching there is no Odin file that will flash 3.1 stock ROM. However, a dev by the name of IronHide is working on one as we speak, he told me so himself. So hang in there and we'll get you back to stock soon.
Edit: He said it will be a few days before its done.
that sounds awesome. thanks for taking the time to help out. i should of known better to make the backup before i took the ota.. ohh well. i have 6 days left to be able to return it..
Can I ask for what reason do you want to return it?
well, this is my second one. the first one was really laggy (bad). It took like 6 hours to charge up. I was like forget it.. So after seeing more people liking their tab i figured i may have pruchased a lemon and maybe with the update it would be better. So I decided to take the leap again and in haste (not making a back up) i jumped on the tw ota. Well, the lag is better and so is the charging. I just have a problem with it turning off and staying off. i have to reset it to get it on. Then i have had an issue with getting into downloading mode. This one is tolerable not the turning off when charging and not being able to turn it on without using power and vol down. I just worried that problem might bite me after my 14 day return is up. I didn't get the extended warranty either.. I hope others aren't running into the same problems i am having.. i think it's just not a good idea to have a tab right now since i am not having the best of luck.
Wow that is tough luck. Sorry to hear about that. The only issues I had is I got the "Sleep of death" the first day I had it but nothing since.
I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119492
I'm not sure if it will help you or not. Its and Odin flash for android 3.01, I was thinking maybe you could then either pull the 3.1 update (but I'm not sure if it would pull the TW ota) or maybe try flashing the file from that firmware via CWM and hope for different results.
I will give that a go tomorrow. I will let you know. Thanks I did take a brief look at this thread earlier and spotted that the tab will still be rooted. So that was as far as I read. Lol. I should of read a bit more
idk if this is bad advice but just brick it so it wont even turn on then take it back and play dumb.
how would I brick it?

So, I was in the recovery mode and accidently bumped the power button when it was on "delete davlick cache" or something similar and now the phone goes to the galaxy s screen, hangs a while, and the screen goes blank and will not load. The buttons do light up still however. I have tried the odin steps to repair a soft brick using odin 1.0 and 1.3 and I have tried both JVD and JI6, nothing will get the phone going. I have followed the directions to a T so I am wondering if anyone else has any ideas. FYI I have spent the last 3 hours reading and trying methods already described, which is why I am posting a new thread. Thanks in advance for any help.
Can you get into download/recovery mode?
Does Odin recognize it when you plug it into the computer?
Were you trying to flash something when this happened (i.e. why were you in recovery mode in the first place)?
A little more information never hurts =)
~SB
sounds like exactly what happened to me, you'll have to go into download mode and use odin to fix it.
I have the same issue. It happened after I received a T-Mo ota update. I've cleared everything I can find to clear. I can get into recovery mode, but when I select the reboot option nothing changes. Anyone have a link to a walk through that a novice could understand? One with nice little things like links to the programs/files necessary? Thanks in advance.
ok this also happened to me i used this to return to stock and everything came back fine.
since i cant yet post a link i provided the thread # paste it to the end of the address in your browser.

Try using eugene's froyo that does not brick w/ odin
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I tried flashing back to the orginal stock t-mobile rom (JFD) through odin but no luck after multiple attempts. I finally just brought it to a t-mobile store and the are sending a replacement. I was fully prepared to take my lumps if they told me it was my problem but since they want to replace it I'm okay with that too. I still have the phone and am going to try some of the other steps that you guys listed before I send it to T-mobile. I was actually partitioning my sd card with the rom manager app and while in recovery I accidentally bumped the power button while "clear davlick cache" or whatever was highlighted. Next thing you know I don't have a working phone. I'm not sure exactly what that does but I do know it messed up my phone. This isn't the first time I've modded phones, did a lot of flashing on my old G1 and Wing and never had anything like this happen.
Oh and I was able to get a good connection with odin, it stated it was successful everytime I tried flashing back to the stock rom but it never fixed the problem.

I didn't go through insurance, T-mo is just replacing it through the warranty. I started to sweat a little when they booted it into recovery mode thinking the tech guy was going to ask the rep at the store to give him the info that comes up to see if it was rooted or modded but the tech just had him clear the phone data and reboot and when that did not work they went ahead and sebt one out. I wouldn't have complained if they told me I was SOL since it was a risk i was taking but I also don't feel bad as they are charging me $10 dollars more a month then I was quoted after my upgrade and I am not sure if I want to go through the hassle of putting in a complaint through the Attorney Generals office. this just may be my payback.
Got it fixed!!!!!
Just got my phone running! Follow the steps in this thread, you first download eugenes froyo and flash to your phone through odin and then immediately flash stock 2.1 through odin and your phone is fixed. I am so happy right now!
Here is the thread with full instructions:

First off u dont use odin to put superuser on it...its in the play store all u use odin for is to root thats it u never use again PM me and ill help u with ur problem we can fix anything on the i717 sometimes even bricking!! So dont ever think we cant
cm9
There is a thread in the i717 section that will lead u step by step read and read again! Only use odin to root and to install cwm nothing else! Backup ur stock rom then find a custom rom that suits u and happy flashing!
cm9
it will not even flash in odin now. i just tried it about 5 times and no go.
so how was or how did they dertermin that you were out of warranty ? it came out in like feb so did they say it was altered or somthing?
Ur doing something wrong man.....if u was able to get in odin before now u cant its on ur end not the phone
cm9
if you can get into download mode then start from scratch. I personally would re root
then reinstall recovery then flash a rom. take it step by step. I know there are roms you can Odin that will give you root but since your having issues I would do them separately. edit
just try Odin the stock rom tar since you just want to send it in

If you are on stock 2.3.4 and tried to flash that kernel .. that is why it failed .. it would be the wrong kernel for that rom. Did you flash a stock rom in recovery? If so then I would suggest using oden to return to stock . then see what you end up with.

That article about returning to original settings in Kies seems to make sense except for the fact that i cannot get Kies to recognise the phone...
Are we talking about Software ou Hardare issue in your opinion?
Cheers
Could be a hardware issue. Try this ... Put the phone into download mode then connect to the pc. Use the cable that came with the phone. Also use a port on the back of the pc ..not a hub. Then open kies and do the emergency firmware update.
Also ... When you used Odin to go to stock ..you installed the 3e recovery ..that's why it failed to flash. Which is a good thing. That kennel would have boot looped you.

Definitely not a hardware issue, there where some changes made IIRC in the kernel driver files, once flashed they prevented the homerow buttons from working normally, the only way I ever found to make them work right was to flash the Flappjaxxx alternate kernel series, let it boot, then return completely to stock!
If you dig around, FJ's alt kernel's are around here somewhere!

My work schedule is absolute hell, and due to people flaking at work I have been called in 2x to cover on my only days off...
Needless to say, im about to pass out, so im going to make this useless post...
Either I, or someone else can link you to a FJ rom, and the FJ alternate kernel that match, what you will need to do prior is make sure you have EVERYTHING you want/need, backed up to GMail (in the case of Phone logs, SMS and MMS with the Backup to GMail app, yes, im whoring this fantastic app out) AND to your computer, NO not your SD card, but your computer!
Make sure you have the latest recovery (TWRP 2.5.0.0 is what I have, but whatever TWRP is latest will do), wipe everything, then install the rom, boot, wait 10min, reboot into recovery, flash the alt kernel, boot, wait 10min, then test the home/back/menu/search key row, they should work, at this point, you CAN go back to the 2.x.x rom you where running, but if you have an i717, I have had nothing but love for the Stock rom update on AT&T once I performed a complete ODIN to it (flashing the ones here on the forum's resulted in random reboots here and there, and while less then ever before, still annoying, after an ODIN however, havent had a random reboot yet!).

Lol yes, sorry kinda going crazy here. Thanks for responding, I appreciate that even. I was on Goodness i605 note 2. I must have screwed up by downloading something in those minsettings that was for a different carrier. It said it was a network error fix I believe. It then took me to recovery to flash the zip and thats when all hell broke loose. It just keeps booting over and over and after the samsung label it shows the twrp screen for a split second then it's just gone. It was obviously a huge mistake and I am an idiot for doing it. I have been trying to get things done through the pc and usb to the phone to fix it and that seems to be the other part of my problem is since I can't turn the usb debugging on on my phone i can't download anything through the usb, Right?...I'm a noob basically and obviously, lol but thanks for responding even if you have no advise.

Dude go into recovery with the rom still installed, and dirty flash the rom while only wiping cache and dalvik. So long as you didn't wipe system you should be fine doing that.
And read more. The op of goodness specifically said don't flash ANYTHING from that till he gives the go ahead. Or it will softboot your phone like it just did

Odin can be buggy, a lot of the issues are with USB cables and whatnot. Try some of these
1. Try Odin a few times, if it doesn't work disable any and all antivirus, reboot PC and try again.
2. If still no success, try reinstalling all drivers and yet again try again.
3. If that fails, use a different USB port.
4. If that doesn't work try a different USB cable.
5. If all else fails just try a different PC.
Frankly your phone has reached rock bottom so any fails with Odin should not make the problems worse than they are now. Keep us posted and good luck.

Ill give all that a go for sure thank you very much. Is there any possible way through your computer connected to your phone through the usb that you can turn on the usb debugging on your phone from your computer? Long shot I'm sure but it seems like if I could get that turned on I would be working in the right direction
are you getting into download mode on the phone itself and seeing the yellow triangle? you can flash the stock samsung firmware through odin which also unroots and then start over with rooting and such.
I would do what wto said. I have had odin fail multiple times because my drivers were not loaded correctly. Keep plugging away at it, and it might surprise you. Good luck, and sorry.....

Thank you all for being so helpful, really I appreciate it. Yes I can get to download and for the first time I was able to get those return to stock files to go through odin sucessfully but then it rebooted and then went into a different loop with just the samsung logo? In the post it said shut it down then and go into recover but I tried and it just goes right back into the loop? any idea from there?
I don't want to give you bad advice at this point. Honestly, this is my first Samsung device. You can still get into downlpad mode correct? If so, you are not completely screwed (hopefully). I will look around tomorrow, and see what I can dig up. At this point you know you can flash files with odin, so dont get careless at this point. I know how frustrating, and anxious you must feel. What a great learning experience, huh? My advice is to do as much research as possible. Getting late, so until tomorrow.

Did you flash the PIT file when you flashed the return to stock files? Which return to stock files did you flash? If you haven't already done this try flashing just the PIT files in Odin and see if that will work for you, if not then flash the alternative recovery ROM and the PIT together in Odin and see if that works.

If you can still get into download your phone will still be functional. I have a few questions.
1. What version of android were you rooted on?
2. Were you ever successfully rooted at any point?
3. Can you get your phone to be recognized in ODIN?
You shouldn't have to need USB debugging if you can get into download mode, for all I know download mode uses the same USB debugging properties as it is not in the OS yet.
Keep us posted and please don't leave out details in-case someone else comes around with a similar issue. If you do get something working, try to put a step-by-step on how you did it for future reference.
Great Learning experience for sure, I thought I was getting good at figuring out what I could and couldnt download lol..yes I'm extremely bummed and even more frusterated. I appreciate all the help and direction. I am truely sorry to even have to ask for help guys believe me. Yes I was rooted, yes I get recognized by odin in download mode and as for the version I was last on I am not sure exactly what I was on...i never got the latest update from verizon because I was rooted before that. So I rooted just after that verizon update that was the security patch I believe?? So I did the pit file with the root66 first and it keeps going all the easy tell the end of the download amd then fails...however I then did the pit with the stock restore and it passed, rebooted my phone then goes into a boot loop and I shut it down like it says in the directions and try to restart into recovery and it goes right back to the bootloop..its like I dont have a recovery set up or something anymore if thats possible?? I'm working now but ill be back to messing with it once I get off so any advice will be appreciated and put to use at 5mst...thanks again everuone
I am just thinking out loud, but if recovery is hosed, maybe you could run casual, and have it reinstall rhe custom recovery. I have no idea if this would work, but it is one way ro get a custom recovery back on. Still looking around for more info, but I dont want to brick your device completely.
Edit- You may try flashing twrp from odin. Here is a link to team.win's website, and download. Again, I am thinkong out loud, and none of my advise is bulletproof.

Thank You sir, I.ll try that once I reach my house
So I accidently F'ed my phone when I was trying to do the carrier unlock method. I installed the T-Mo radio and forgot to download the correct ROM. So I was like no biggie Ill just re-flash the correct radio. Long story short I decided to just go back to stock for the time being. Hooked up to Odin and flashed the pda-odin-att-stock.tar. Rebooted and and let it sit for a few minutes. Then booted into the stock recovery and factory reset the phone. Once it booted back up everything seems legit its just EXTREMELY SLOW. Like to the point of I cant do anything with it.
Where should I go from here. Ive been searching the forums but doesnt seem like anyone has had this exact issue. Should I try to root it again using the original pda.tar file and then load TWRP back on and try a new ROM. is there another one that includes the radio or is my radio fixed with the back to stock tar?
Any help would be appreciated. I need my phone back.
So I tried to basically root it again and installed TWRP and now its basically bricked. I can get into download mode but nothing else. And returning it to stock doesnt help now either. So ya Im stumped.
If it goes into download mode, maybe you need to re-flash TWRP or CWM?
Try This
Same thing happened to me a few days ago; if this isn't solved yet, what I did was:
Take out the battery
Keep it out for about 10 seconds
Plug it back in
now when you turn it on you should be able to get into TWRP
Flash ROM (Stock or whatever)
If you don't have a ROM when you search for it in TWRP, I think there's one last thing you could do, ADB sideload I think its called. Though I never needed to use it.

If you have download mode, no brick.
Odin back to stock with .tar file.
You don't have to he rooted to flash ROM. Go to Super Everything thread and read on how to flash, root or whatever.
Read read read and understand what you are doing first
