Apparently they're cracking down on roaming. So be careful if you use roam control. Glad I got my Airave yesterday, according to them my roaming usage was 1000 last month, 1200 the month before that, and 1600 before that.

If their cracking down on roaming by calling customers telling them your using to much roaming then id say They may have an issue with their network and coverage. I myself have seen numerous times inside their coverage area that i go into roaming. All I have to do is drive a block sometimes and I show I go into roaming. All this and we have 4g here in some areas as well. But limited. The roaming issues really got bad a few months ago. In fact I thought I had seen an article on it that they lost some roaming agreement with another company that Verizon had bought out. That Sprint shared tower support with..
Maybe instead of barking at their customers for this issue they need to actually increase and fix the Network they have now to resolve the issue.
Even having said that. If you know your in roaming why the heck would you want to try and push so much data... ??? Its slower.
I have a buddy that actually WORKED for Sprint but lived outside of the "coverage" map and the seriously kicked him off of the service and canceled his contracts for using too much roaming time.

that doesn't sound too bad to me... and I'll get hella trade in value for this Evo3D. It's their fault I'm roaming constantly so they give me a way out of my contract which makes moving to another carrier that much easier.
Sounds like a **** move, but, if you can't get a good signal to get off of roaming, well, go to that other carrier.
...I've been thinking about doing this lately, wouldn't be hard...I'm roaming constantly now...but Verizon and ATT's plans completely. fncking. suck.
Can't wait until they call me on that one. Store rep actually sold me my Evo 4G a year ago saying "Don't worry. Sprint signal is really weak where you live but you can roam freely on Verizon's network." So yeah, if they don't want people to roam, they can get a real network or stop complaining: because that's how they sell their service to customers.
And as far as the Airave, it's not free... you pay at least $4.50/mo in federal fees. May not sound like a lot but it's another fee I don't need on my account due to Sprint's lame network. Plus, it's nothing more than glorified VOIP. If I wanted a cordless VOIP phone that uses my internet bandwidth, I'd pick up my Vonage line and use the cordless on that line! And get better range doing it!
Mike
I totally agree and those numbers aren't data usage they're the minutes I've used. I still actually use my phone for voice calls quite a bit.

No, you've got it all wrong....we've got:
"Free" Nationwide Roaming and
"Unlimited" Data
....trust us, this is "a thing"
EDIT: Disclaimer - I have used over 10gb a month, going over the invisible 5gb limit, many times and never got a letter or call. Some have. However that's only beating up their own network...but roaming costs Sprint money and they won't take very much abuse(?) of that feature.
Just so you know for the everything data family atleast, the contract states that you can roam only for 800 minutes and 300 mb each month. For the data, if you go over that you may be charged .03 per kilobyte.

I'd rather pay less and deal with decent 3g than pay what Verizon charges for every little random thing.
I can watch Netflix while sitting at the park, or browse while listing to chronix radio, Im not trying to beat a missle in download speeds here lol.
The equipment is up already so it'll be fast. That's the last worry I have. I just hope we don't go through a year of only lte netbooks & data cards before we see the phones.
My Wimax speed is fine, I just want better range & wall penetration for when I'm at the office.

ehhh lets not start a debate here, but LTE is superior to Wimax, which is why all the major carriers are using it and or about to. (sprint)
The inherent flaw with Wimax is the frequency it uses, BUT isnt dependant on Sprint. Clearwire modems have the same trouble penetrating buildings and stuff like that because of the high frequency. TRUE wimax could be theoretically better, but LTE is more practical in real world usage because of the lower frequency it uses, which is better when it comes to range and penetration.
The variable here is the LTE network on VZ has barely been tapped into. Who knows what real world speeds will come when it finally gets saturated with 4G users.
So as of RIGHT NOW. LTE is beating out Wimax...Dan Hesse has admitted it

Yeah makes me wish I would have switched to Verizon the day before they implemented the data caps. I had called up a Verizon business rep and everything, but I couldn't justify the huge price increase.
i wish i could say that i dont care about 4g because 3g is ok, but 3g blows just as hard as 4g in my area (ok not AS bad, i literally dont get 4g here) but my 3g speeds generally range from 5-40kbps and usually get almost no upload at all. even with getting a good price on my plan, sub dial up speeds is literally ridiculous.
Lmao My dad brags about the data speeds (Verizon) over sprint. I said so what do you want a cookie? If I wanted to be on Verizon Id be on Verizon. He dropped it after that.

Sprint better find a way to roll out their LTE quicker and with more coverage. After all, who launches a LTE phone without LTE being available? I think the sales for Evo LTE will suffer greatly because of lack of LTE. By the time LTE is up, the Evo LTE will be old news.

I think more people are likely to buy a phone that is ready for what is coming(LTE) than a phone that is for what is leaving(WiMax).

I hear ya knockin'. These days, phones become outdated fast....faster than when the OG Evo came out. I want the Evo LTE to succeed, but not having LTE out at this point in time doesn't make me want to upgrade to it and people from other carriers won't want to leave their 4G. And a few months from now, when LTE finally gets going, the Evo LTE will be considered old. Just my $0.02.
Good news that Sprint is going the extra mile to improve the LTE.
This makes me laugh.
Sprint is essentially using hardware that is designed for home use (say a family of four) and rolling it out as a solution to it's congested network.
Is THIS their "Network Vision?"
No wonder I'm not surprised when I get 1kbps download. Can't wait for Sprint to install some "personal network extenders" (way better than an actual network) in my area, maybe I'll see 2kbps.

I'm not paying to get out of my contract (especially now that Sprint upped ETF's), that is why I stay. Simple as that.
Before I signed my current contract, I talked to a Sprint representative (not a Sprint store employee) who assured me that Sprint was going to be extremely proactive in establishing a network.
Since then:
-Sprint upped ETF's
-Sprint spent funds that should have been allocated to improving it's network on the iPhone
-Sprint ended the premiere rewards program (a major reason I stayed)
Prediction: When Sprint finally has a network that can compete with other companies say goodbye to unlimited data plans. Sprint only keeps them around because that is the only card they have to play.
Getting back to the article, Sprint needs to completely overhaul it's network, not deploy "personal network extenders" that only mask the problem.

This sounds like a great idea for high traffic areas. Reminds me specifically last year at the state fair; there were so many people in such a small area that the tower(s) were so overloaded that data, voice, AND texting were absolutely unusable. You simply could not get through no matter what. It was horrible. Areas like that would be perfect for these small cells.
I'm just as fed up with sprints data service as everyone else is, but I have hope. If network vision ends up being as good as they say it is, I'll definitely be staying with them.

"Network Vision is going to be great!"
"Sprint's network is going to be better than all the other carriers!"

Did it? Know how much money Sprint shoved into that network even though nearly everyone in the industry said it would never work? What do they have to show for it? A network that they will keep around for the next couple of years until they redo it with lte, what it should have been in the first place.
I'm glad you can use it and that it works good for you, that still doesn't replace the fact that it was a huge business mistake.

Everyone knew or should of known before getting the phone that lte was not up yet and you would be on the 3G network.
If your sales person didn't tell you this then I would take it up with your salesperson. If you bought the phone online then sorry about your luck, lesson learned. ( Hopefully )
Either way don't knock Sprint for something they have made clear. It was never stated to have 4G WiMax. Only 3G and lte when available.

I live in Aurora, CO and there are two towers here that are as opposite as night and day. One is totally bogged down and speeds are 200 kbps Down and 200 kbps Up with 400 ping. About 3 miles away, another tower gives me 1200 kbps down and 800 kbps up with 100 ping.
They are working on it, just have patience.

I've been patient with Sprint for over 12 years. I get that it is coming. The point is 3G is worse now than it was with the OG. And this is with new towers on 3G in the area. Simply pathetic especially considering I work and live next to a major international airport and large technology corridor.

OP: well, if you're so upset about current 3g speeds and aren't willing to wait a little more, then please feel free to hop over to verizon or ever ATT. No one's stopping you.
Good luck, have fun.

I like Sprint. The whole point is speeds seem worse with the EVOLTE than on the old device. It is either an issue with the EVOLTE or the network is getting worse rather than better.

The problem is that most people, including myself actually have better 3G speeds with the newer radio technology on the LTE compared to older generation smartphones.

That's what I don't get. I have read how people are doing better yet I'm about as bad as it can get in almost every area I try.

You could always call the Sprint direct customer service line, 877-775-4886, and make a formal complaint about said speeds. See if they can give you some freebies if not some information regarding the Network Vision roll-out in your local area. Who knows, they might throw in some credit or something.

That might be my best bet. I was cool with 3G on the OG - hardly ever used WiMax since it was so spotty. I am simply at a loss for how this is playing out when everyone else seems to be having much better luck.
My 3g speeds are about the same as they were on my og evo, and most of the time they suck. The part that really sucks for me is that I might notice that my speeds are really slow and run a speed test, and confirm it, then an hour, or day later, the speed might be flying.
As an example, I just ran a speed test because it seemed slow, I got 203 kbps down and 506 kbps up. Yesterday I noticed it seemed faster than normal, so I did a speed test from my desk at work, the same location as the test I just did today. I got 2389 kbps down and 925 kbps up, by far the fastest I have ever seen it here.
At home I rarely see speeds over 100 kbps, yet just the other day I got about 1000 kbps down there. The bottom line for me is, I wouldn't care if the speeds weren't great if they were just consistent. It sucks when I need to do something quick and the data connection is crawling, which is the case more often than not.
I had a problem right out of the box. My ping was over 800 and was getting under 100 down. Weird thing wad that up was at like 300. I had this problem with my 3# so I called sprint and asked for my msl. Enter ##72786#. Enter your msl and then go to menu reset. It will reactivate. My speeds went up to over 1000. Worth a shot for u guys. Interesting sidenote... When I called in the tech told me to power down the phone and remove the battery. I let him know that these phones don't have removable batteries. Amazing that some techs don't even know about their flagship devices...

I ran that and updated profile and PRL again and I see some improvement. Sprint acknowledged an outage but it sounds like it covers Baltimore, DC and VA which doesn't narrow much for me. It is also off peak hours so we'll see how it works tomorrow. Regardless, thanks for the code.
So how long before the other carriers follow verizons plan?...http://finance.yahoo.com/news/verizon-ditch-phone-plans-shared-120639203.html

Not really sure, however, Sprint offers unlimited data, Verizon doesn't, and Verizon is still the #1 in the U.S. So, what that says, is Sprint is lacking other major areas: spotty Wimax, no 4G LTE yet, poor phone line up. My experience is Sprint offers more for less, but, that's not enough to keep people from jumping ship.
I guess what I'm getting at, is how can this really hurt Sprint any more?
The only thing hurting Sprint is their lack of a network, terrible 3G speeds, and no 4G LTE. I'm just waiting for the Rezound replacement to come out on Verizon and I'm leaving...had enough of it.

I'd do the same, however, I'd blow through the data limit. I have no issues with my 3G service (although it's less than desirable in speed) or my reception (until I go in to Wal-Mart, lol!). 4G/Wimax sucks. I wouldn't be able to afford Verizon. My bill would easily increase by 50%.
I'll pay more for better service. My service sucks up here. I'm forced to use the 0002 prl. I'm switching to Verizon when the sgs3 drops.

I don't think we have anything to worry about. Sprint can afford to keep unlimited data because their data speeds are 5 times slower than other carriers.
Does anyone see this network vision upgrade fixing the speeds? It may help, but I doubt it will solve all the network problems.

I thought i read, and please correct me if i am wrong, if you don't have a lte device it will only help call quality, not network speed. So our crappy 3g is still going to be slow. But if you have wimax, well then you still have it to use.
I don't think Verizon's plan will harm us per say . I actually think that it will drum up a little business for Sprint with them finally having a good summer lineup of phones and being cheaper. However I believe the next year to year and a half will either make or break Sprint. I for one waited patiently for the promise of wimax now like 90% of Sprint subscribers I'm still waiting for Wimax and or waiting for LTE. There will come a time soon when I'll get tired of promises and ditch them for another network even if it costs more. I'm not a speed junky but the 2/3g towers are so overburdened it's a joke in the 12 states i've been to I've never EVER gotten more then 1.2 megs with wimax or 3g while my sister in law's crappy old og droid opens 2-3 webpages while I'm waiting on one.

ummmm no. 3g speeds will increase since network vision also includes increasing the backhaul from the current bonded t1 backhauls many sites are currently using.
I see plenty of tower upgrades nearby, but no improvement in data speeds. I think people are expecting way too much from this network vision. Sprint just doesn't have the network size/capacity or money to compete with Verizon and ATT.

Ditto. According to the upgrade map on Sprint's site, every tower around my house has been upgraded, yet I still drop calls and get a max of 100kbps on 3g, even with full bars.
I am really struggling to find a reason to stay with Sprint. Sure it is great to have unlimited everything, but if I can't even place a phone call out of my kitchen, what's the value?
I'm waiting for the sgs3 to drop, if dev is the same for Sprint and Verizon. Then bye-bye Sprint.

I'm glad im not the only one that feels this way. I pay $70/month for crappy service. I could be paying $80-85 and have great service. I think that's well worth the extra money.
Sprint has really dropped the ball. I got my evo 4g it was the best out. They followed with the evo 3d and was still good. Everything since then has been dissappointing. The new evo 4g lte is far from good enough to make me sign a new contract. They never even got the 4g working that well in my area, even though its supposed to be. Not signing a new contact in a few weeks when my old one is up for their broken promises

i switched to the 0002 prl about two days ago and it's the best thing i've ever done lol
As mentioned their plan won't hurt us because we have a crappy network. Verizon can switch things up because their network actually performs. I can't switch because of those outrages prices and I'm pretty sure I would burn through a gig of data.
From the comments I read it seems like this move by Verizon may land Sprint and ATT some customers.
verizons plan will lose out on customers and bring more to other networks as said earlier in the thread. but it really depends on where you live, alltel and sprint have the better signals around here. plus you just cant beat unlimited data
